Tidal Software Announces the Tidal Enterprise Adapter for Cognos
05/18/2009

New adapter allows Cognos to be managed as part of a comprehensive enterprise scheduling solution.

Palo Alto, CA (PRWEB) May 18, 2009 -- Tidal Software, a leading provider of application scheduling and performance management software, today announced availability of the Tidal™ Enterprise Adapter for Cognos. The Tidal Enterprise Adapter for Cognos is the interface between the Tidal Enterprise Scheduler and Cognos 8 Business Intelligence. This adapter enables Tidal Enterprise Scheduler users to define, launch and monitor Cognos 8 Business Intelligence jobs and ensure that all dependencies are processed correctly. By ensuring that exactly the right data will be processed at the right time, the Tidal solution allows Cognos to be managed as part of a comprehensive enterprise scheduling solution.

Tidal customer CDPHP, a New York based healthcare plan, uses Tidal's enterprise job scheduling solution with the Cognos adapter and finds that Tidal products have greatly simplified BI reporting. "Scheduling Cognos reports was doable, but not practical without Tidal. Developers had to include special hooks and/or database tricks to pass in date parameters," said Richard Spoth, Enterprise Business Intelligence Architect at CDPHP.

"The Cognos adapter from Tidal eliminates the need for all of that," said Spoth. "It is easy to set up jobs in such a way that even very complex reports that require diverse data are not only run automatically, but are more reliable and reach the Cognos user consistently on time. Also, all reports created by our Business Intelligence Competency Center (BICC) have filter criteria clearly displayed in the report so there is no question as to how the report data was filtered, and we always know how it was created."

Tidal's Cognos adapter allows Tidal customers to develop every Cognos report the same way, with the same look and feel, whether it runs in batch or on demand. It also allows any report created via Cognos to be dropped into a batch cycle without any changes to that report by simply setting up a Tidal job.

"The adapter was specifically designed to simplify Cognos process management allowing it to be integrated into a broader enterprise context and to allow proper integration of ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load) and reporting functionality," said Wayne Greene, Tidal's vice president of product management. "It provides complete enterprise scheduling functionality including GUI job definition, the ability to set complex cross-system, cross-application dependencies, and custom calendar creation. It also allows Cognos jobs to be integrated with an entire data flow produced by applications from Source Systems, Informatica, DataStage and others."

The Tidal Enterprise Adapter for Cognos is an API-level integration solution, which packages implementation details in screens that connect to and define Cognos instances. It accesses the Cognos 8 Business Intelligence data repository via an environment file. The Cognos server and repository can run on any Cognos-supported hardware in the data center. The Tidal adapter enforces the Cognos user names and passwords that are associated with Tidal Enterprise Scheduler runtime users. Creating a Cognos job from within Tidal Enterprise Scheduler is highly secure but as simple as creating any other job.

The scheduler is event-based, so it launches processes based on defined calendars and schedules and uses asynchronous callbacks for monitoring--enabling users to see status changes in real time and to control those processes as they execute. This capability reduces production processing time windows, because the Adapter does not need to wait for a polling interval to pass before reacting to the completion of a session or workflow.

By leveraging the Tidal Enterprise Adapter for Cognos, organizations can create job definitions that manage the most complex Cognos request sets. Tidal Enterprise Scheduler enables users to develop process streams and manage the information flow from a centralized console, thereby giving them greater control over all aspects of a Cognos job stream including its relationship to all enterprise jobs. Tidal Enterprise Scheduler provides virtually unlimited flexibility in developing job streams. Users can utilize the Adapter to merge system and ERP application processes into a cohesive, centrally-managed job stream--providing error detection, correction and management across the enterprise.

Tidal Software is a member of the IBM/Cognos Partner program. The adapter for Cognos is generally available through Tidal Software today.
