Pros: I like the ability to create reports on the fly.

Cons: I do not have any dislikes other than the staged rollout of pieces of my prior firm's datamart.

Overall: My prior firm switched from the other software to Cognos to leverage the data contained in our Pivotal database. This software was far easier to use to create reports on the fly.

Pros: Easily integrating with most of the ERPs, very good for customizing reports, very detailed reporting

Cons: Tough to learn & not many resources available, you will get the value of the money invested in it only if you are able to get the most out of it

Overall: I used Cognos as an analytical tool by linking our ERP (Microsoft Dynamic NAV) to it. All the financial data would be mapped & a lot of customized reports were taken out like Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA). The user interface is pretty good. The CUBEs are little confusing but once you get the grip they work very well. The ability to drill down the reports to very basic level is a plus point
A little tough to learn & customize. It's a little slow when dealing with a medium amount of data.

Recommendations to other buyers: Go for it only if your organisation is huge & you need an additional reporting tool apart from your ERP

Pros: The ability to create custom reports makes it user friendly for anyone to figure out

Cons: the cubes tend to be confusing for file storage

Overall: I utilize Cognos for dashboard and custom reports and the ease of creating and storing reports is fairly simple. The organization of files is a bit confusing and the ability of seeing other employee folders tends to be complication for sharing. The availability to send out reports is much easier though.

Recommendations to other buyers: Enable a formal organizing platform to make finding files to share easier to use

Pros: We used it to tell trends within the overall business all the way down to the rep level per product sub-segment. Once we agreed to 4-5 dashboard reports and strictly limited "custom" reporting in discussion, we started seeing value.

Cons: If your turnover is high or if there is not enough specialists on hand to REALLY train it well, its a lost value. The learning curve is steep and it really depends on your base level item level data and input. Can you trust what it is telling you?

Overall: It cube-like interface is very useful when you need pivot table like analytics for line managers or executives. It can slice and dice data in more ways than you need and pretty quickly too. We use this product.

Comments: Cognos is a very useful tool. I use it to share data with other workers in my corporation. My only complaint with it is that it can be very hard to learn. I feel like I've barely scratched the surface.
