Comments: For an easy self-service business intelligence (BI) tool that is mostly free, Microsoft Power BI continues to expand and gain new features almost monthly. What started as primarily an add-in for the Microsoft ecosystem has now developed into a more fully functional package that ranks at the top of the self-service BI space. For this reason and more, it wins one of our Editors' Choice awards in this self-service BI tool review roundup (the other award goes to competitor Tableau Desktop$999.00 at Tableau Software). There are more than 40 different data sources that can be accessed with Microsoft Power BI, including Hadoop and QuickBooks Online$39.95 at Intuit (through oAuth), Tableau Desktop, Google Analytics, and numerous enterprise data sources.
Microsoft is continually adding new connectors such as ones for MailChimp databases (so you can monitor data and trends about your mailing list campaigns, reports, and individual subscribers). Microsoft also gives you the ability to directly query Structured Query Language (SQL) databases on SQL Server and in the Microsoft Azure cloud as well as Spark-based data sources.
