SK7 Upgrade - be careful!
Reviewed on January 21, 2014 by Andre Leroux, Consultant at Venetia Systems LLC
Comments: We have used SK6 for a number of years at our church and have been very satisfied with it. My wife is treasurer at our church and at another church where she has been frustrated by their existing, 'clunky' system. Based on her experience with SK6 at our church, she persuaded them to buy SK7. One of the most useful features for entering contributions in SK6 was the ability to scan checks which prefilled the contributors details and helped ensure correct allocation. This feature has not been retained in SK7. Instead it has been replaced by a new feature which utilizes a service with TransModus which allows checks to be scanned and deposited directly into your bank account. However, this service costs $200-$300 per month which is too expensive for smaller churches with tight budgets. It would have made a lot more sense for them to have retained the old option in SK7 in addition to the new option. I can see that the new option could be useful for bigger churches with more substantial budgets. I just cannot understand why the existing users should now be adversely impacted by having the simple check scanning functionality removed.
I spoke to a SK sales rep who seemed to be at sea about why the functionality had been removed. I also did not get the feeling the he was particularly interested in communicating our frustration up the chain of command.
by Servant PC Resources on January 24, 2014
First, thank you for using Servant Keeper and for recommending it to others. I'm glad it has served you so well!
At this time we are considering bringing back the check scanning option for V7. The decision was made based on emerging technology that replaced the basic scanners.
The TransModus feature you mention is billed a few cents per check, not several hundred dollars per month. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. The benefit of the Transmodus check scanner is that it accomplishes the remote deposit, and can scan up to 90 checks at a time.
The other thing many churches requested is online giving that integrates with Servant Keeper, thus eliminating double entry. Not only do we offer that now, but we are able to provide that at a significantly less cost than the other online giving options. Donors can give by credit, debit, or check account, according to the church's preference.
Please contact us if you would like to discuss further.

Pros: The system is excellent in providing a comprehensive profile for membership and contributions.
Cons: The software needs to be syncable. We have off-site locations where we use the same database management but are unable to sync them together. This causes us to have two systems instead of one.
Overall: Would recommend this system, despite its inability to sync with off-sites. I'm sure this "hiccup" will be resolved in the not too distant future and will be presented to current users without a large financial burden.

Pros: I send an email to S.K. requesting info on child check in resources. I asked if S.K. could send me an email with information. Bernadett Reynolds called me. She gave me the infomation I was requesting as well as ansered all my questions. She took time and helped me to know what would be the best package for our church within the parameters we have. She was very helpful. I appreciated that she allowed me to be an information gatherer and respected that we needed time to make this decision. I was very impressed with how she shared ways we can be upgrading our system with regular updates that are part of our package already. We didn't realize this and are very thankful!
Cons: I requested an email with information on check in services, Bernadett called me instead--but I'm very thankful she did. it was much better and there would be no way I could have received this level of information through an email. thank you.

Cons: I sometimes can not find the answers I need in the manual, but have customer service. If the church could not afford that service, then I would find the manual problematic. I am going to purchase the 2011 revision. I do think some of the newer add on programs are a bit pricey for the average congregation.

Hi Rachel,Thank you for using SK. We are glad that you have been happy up to this point.
To recap your call:
We offer a 50% discount on Servant Keeper (Servant Keeper Small Church) to small churches and church plants. This is what you purchased last year. The only limitation on this version is it is limited to 50 families. You can unlock the unlimited database for just $299. Most small church customers end up unlocking to the unlimited version within a year or so. This tells us, and they confirm, that Servant Keeper is helping them grow and reach more people.
A big benefit of Servant Keeper is the award winning support. While we do allow customers to purchase software without a support plan, we highly recommend having support the first year. Please note, unlike most, we do not outsource our support services overseas or to third party companies who are providing ¿support¿ for hundreds of software companies. Thus we cannot provide it for free.

Church record keeping at your finger tips
Reviewed on October 19, 2012 by Vicki Risner, Financial Secretary at Ascension Lutheran Church
Pros: Simple to use. Entry screens are basic and easy to follow. Entry errors are easy to correct. Easy to add new people and catagories while making entries.
Members like how detailed yet simple their giving statements are. Clear format for easy understanding. Multiple options are available for statements to customize to your needs for that moment.
Reports are easy to read in ways that are simple for councils and chairpersons to review quickly and without additional training.
History is quickly accessed and can be used to create an abundance of reports for budgets and church needs.
Webinars are informative and helpful. Don't skip them if at all possible. They open new ways of using the software.
Cons: Pledges can only be tracked per person, not by family, on critical reports. There are ways to work around this by entering the spouse with a zero pledge, but doesn't not quite correct the whole problem there. Not enough con to outweigh all the positive pros though.
Overall: Servant Keeper is a great asset to our church record keeping & daily needs of managing our congregation.
The financial portion of the program is easy to use. You won't need an accountant to make entries & run a vast array of easy to read reports. Accountants will find the complete information they need as well.
The membership manager can maintain a wealth of knowledge about members & visitors. Easy to add & maintain. Reports are simple & can be customized for your specific needs.
Overall, the screens are easy to read, progress in logical fashion & allow even users with basic computer knowledge to be successful & not overwhelmed. More experiences users can customize, optimize & utilize the software is countless ways to suit their needs.

Pros: Capability to create reports. Ease of updating and moving names to a new family, etc. The option to print a label/envelope.
I really love the way you can choose a defined category and create reports. Ex. Teens - a report can be generated male/female, grade 7-9/10-12, by age, etc.
Cons: The capability to generate an undefined search would be quite valuable. In regard to printing out reports, I would like to be able to create a report in another form other than a read-only adobe. Sometime I want to be able to cut & paste items and this doesn't give me the freedom to do so.
Overall: We don't really use the financial portion of this program, so I cannot address it.
The portion I do use, I've come to really utilize it in a positive way. Lets just say, I've really enjoyed becoming smarter than the program and been creative in what it has to offer me to do so.

Overall: good tool but I find myself having to revert back to external tools like Word to do mail merge and other functions that cant be done in SK. One Data Base Matters
Reviewed on October 08, 2010 by Donna M Johnston, Financial Secretary, volunteer at Heritage Presbyterian Church
Pros: We used version 5 far too long & were only using the Contributions module on a single PC when I assumed the position in August 2008. We then upgraded to version 6 & also purchased the Remote module for me at home & I began to learn the Membership module to train our office secretary at church on the Host. It made the task of pledges & contributions very simple. It takes no time at all. I can print (to hand out) or email quarterly giving statements based on the members' choice.
The secretary has learned the Membership module & has printed our first membership directory this summer with Blue Squirrel.
The best feature for us is the ability to keep everyone in one database without using spreadsheets or lists for mailings, directories, prayer chains, etc. Previously the Contributions records were updated independently of the Membership Records, which was double work & cause for errors. The profile pages have plenty of data fields for flexibility.
Cons: The church & I use Mac computers so a used PC was donated for the office & I'm using an old PC at home for Remote access.
Although we are using attendance for worship services we have not utilized many of the features yet such as Events. We have not done a picture directory either.
The Pastor has not used it although I set up a user ID for him, when desired.
Overall: I have found the customer support personnel very knowledgeable & helpful. I highly recommendation this church software.

You always get to talk to a person rather than research an information database.
Cons: Typing in the words to log on repeatedly is distracting.
Overall: I have tried 3 different types of software for church management. Although they all advertised that they were user-friendly, the others were difficult to understand and demanded that you do things their way. I kept searching for something that was easier to learn and that would meet our specific needs. When I tried Servant Keeper, I recognized that this software would allow me to personalize the entry of the contributions so that anyone who would need to look at the books could understand it. The Servant Keeper experience is definitely superior to other brands I've tried.
Servant Keepers was an answered prayer.

Pros: SK help desk has been my best friend in getting our Database set up. It is shaping up quite nicely. In just a week we had people assigned to Sunday School. Soon after, I was printing attendance history, rosters for Sunday School and much more.
We are promoting a concert 10/22...SK Neighborhood arrived just in time. We looking forward to working through this with Click Books or Report Manager.
Cons: Rosters don't have the option to include "allergies" for our kids. Maybe another version/upgrade ???
Would like to edit 'teacher' on roster to "coach"
Overall: While we have only had our Servant PC database 2 months, I am excited about how far we have come in Managing God's People. This has been an exciting project and I actually look forward to coming to work...go figure!!!

I am just getting started, but from the demo, feedback, and videos, this will definitely streamline my admin world.
Note: The four stars are only because I haven't fully taken advantage of using the program yet, but look forward to giving a five star rating in the near future. Thank you!
Cons: Would like a 'back' button
Overall: So far, so great! I would highly recommend Servant Keeper just from the customer service standpoint alone. It's a cost effective way to streamline my administrative world, and I see my sanity slowly returning. :)

Pros: Program has a lot of features.
Program can give you just about any report you would like.
We do like the program.
Cons: Getting the information from people to input in SK and being able to track people/children in a small community for safety, etc (this is our biggest issue). This is not a flaw with SK.
A lot information to learn and a short amount of training. Training should be set up in a hands on setting and for longer than what is currently done for more in-dept learning.
Overall: We do like SK and would recommend the program.

Great Software Program
Reviewed on October 05, 2010 by Linda Shepherd, Secretary at First Baptist Church Yorba Linda
Pros: Very easy to install and use. Servant Keeper makes life very easy because of things like ease in going from one program to the next. Ex. Inputting visitor's contributions takes just one stroke and you are in membership inputting them as a visitor to use for contributions. To input the entire church is simple because of the ease in the membership entry program. The program makes it simple to keep track of visitors. Overall the program is very simple to operate and very necessary for keeping the church current at all times.
Cons: I have not discovered any cons.
Overall: Servant Keeper is essential to the church office.
So glad we switched
Reviewed on October 05, 2010 by Bonnie Robak, Executive Director at The Gathering Church
Pros: Servant Keeper is much more user friendly than our previous system. Installation and transferring data was without a hitch and well worth the investment of time. We have eliminated yearly contract fees and now have a system that actually meets our needs and is easy to use. We've experienced great tech support to get over our initial learning curve.
Cons: Would like to have training videos available for those who don't have a workshop in their area or so they don't have to wait for training. The sooner all the SK users at a location begin to increase their effectivenes and productivity the sooner they will appreciate the value of SK and truly use the product as designed. Short individual modules by topic would put this over the top.
Overall: We are very glad that we chose Servant Keeper as our Church Management Software.

Cons: The only thing I am wondering is if when you change an address for the Head of Household, is there a setting that will automatically change the whole families address instead of changing them each one by one?
Overall: I would surely recommend SK to anyone that is looking to purchase a church soft ware program.

Yes, in system preferences the default is set so that if you make a change at the family level, it migrates those changes to all of the family members (i.e. address and phone would be the most common for these types of changes) THANK YOU for your review!

New to Servant Keeper
Reviewed on August 11, 2010 by Kyra Springett, Church Office Administrator at Park Presbyterian Church
Pros: I'm fairly new to SK. But have talked with Sales Rep (Bernadette) and help desk people for months leading up to purchase. I'm very happy with most everything. Especially the ease of contacting help desk. Although some of my questions weren't always resolved, They are always available when I need them. And are patient. I also LOVE that you have a working chat feature. I'm still working on adding information into the system. So far it's working well.
Cons: Haven't been able to resolve one technical issue yet relating to "the publisher not being able to be verified." Apparently it's because I used microsoft. The Help desk doesn't seem to readily have the answer. I was told to check into the user forum. Although I think I need to press the issue more with help desk. They've informed me that an IT person on my end will need to work on this issue. I'm hoping the help desk can work to have more of an answer for this problem in the future. Since apparently it's a common one.
Overall: Excellent. I'm very pleased with all aspects of SK. I mainly switched because of the Customer Service. That is number 1 in priorities for me.

Pros: I had worked with it at my previous church position and I liked it so well that I asked for it at this church!
Cons: The cons would be just a few things that I wish it would do that it won't. I don't like that you cannot enter just the month and year or just the year on salvation and baptism. Many people do not know the day.
Overall: Overall, I would highly recommend Servant Keeper
Great tool for ministry

Pros: The program is very easy to use! I love the fact that all the information is in one place and ready to be accessed immediately!
The extra fields are nice, because we can somewhat tailor the program to what we need!
Cons: Only one person can use it at a time, unless you are networked.
For our needs, some of the fields are not necessary and fields we actually use are not listed (see pros).
Some of the technical help, wasn't helpful.
Overall: I would recommend this program to any one who needs a great, easy way to keep up with the people in their ministry and church.
I highly recommend getting the book (if you are a visual person).

From mailing labels to attendance tracking, it has made our life so much easier...and you just can't beat the price. With the other software we were using, we called technical support several times a month. Since we've switched to Servant Keeper, we called once....we when were making the switch. Great product!
Cons: The only problem we've had is with attendance. When running the reports, the reports only show who has been at church....not those missing. A little confusing at first, but we've figured out and are working around that!
Overall: I would recommend this for any church looking to track attendance and contributions.

Reviewed on August 11, 2010 by Buddy Lamb, Pastor at Schomburg Road Baptist Church
Pros: I bought Servant Keeper in 1997 because it was the most powerful most affordable church management system. I bought it for the same reason while in two other churches and I helped my local denominational office purchase it as well.
Besides the affordability, the best feature is that you can customize any of the fields to your on situation or church. This gives you freedom to create groups, searches and the data any way you need or want. It is THE best way to email any small group or your entire membership.
I would recommend Servant Keeper to any church for managing their memebership data without hesitation; it is simply the best on the market.
Cons: Because S/K is so powerful, it can be a little over whelming at first, but anyone can learn to do the basic functions quickly, even if they are not strong in computers.
It is a little difficult to manage with multi-users in multi-locations. We have volunteers using it and sometimes in their home. I wish there was a backup system that could be use over the internet some how. This is my only complaint, but we have found a work around to solve this issue with us.
Overall: It does matter if you are a small church with limited staff or a large church with multi-users, Servant Keeper will simplify your data management in every way.

Pros: Servant Keeper is very intuitive. I was able to start using it before I read the documentation or watched the webinar. (Not that I recommend that to the other users.)
I love the flexibilty of being able to change the names of fields and add and delete items from the drop down lists.
The offsite contribultion tool is wonderful. It allows our volunteer people to work from home, which gives them the flexibilty they need to work around their jobs and other life commitments.
The Check-In module has transformed our church. By using it to check in children for Children's Church, we are able to collect information about non- members when they first attend Citadel and reach out to them through other ministries.
Cons: Can't think of any.
Overall: I would like more "extra fields" and "extra lists" on the Profile page.(I'm greedy) so that we can organize better and devote the "More Info" page to a single category of information.
