Comments: I like using Canto Flight due to the global nature of our organization. It allow us to easily and quickly share high res images across the organization, even though we are on different continents. I also like the fact that we can load preliminary assets for review that others cant see until we have approved their usage, or made the necessary editing first. Sending links instead of images helps prevent email bounce backs and jamming other people's inboxes

Comments: Since using Canto Digital Asset Management tool we have been able to maintain and organize all our digital files with ease. Finally we can easily find and sort through thousands of files to find what we need, share with external clients without worry about space limitations and have freelance/volunteer photographers directly upload their material to the tool. It has been great to use!

Pros: The ability to organize our digital assets with albums and have the ability to filter, sort, and search makes it easier to find the files we're looking for.

Cons: Being cloud-based scares me a bit since we have several terabytes of data, but so far access to the data is great.

Overall: The ability to organize our digital assets with albums and have the ability to filter, sort, and search makes it easier to find the files we're looking for.

Recommendations to other buyers: We can access Flight from mobile devices, which comes in handy during off-site meetings. The ability to add Metadata and Custom Fields to further organize the files is outstanding. Being that we are a supplier of generic hard goods, the ability to create branded portals is essential for that "Whitebox" experience for our distribution customers who want to use our assets with their customers.

Comments: Flight by Canto has really helped our business with the management and dissemination of digital assets. This had been a pain point for us for a long time. I researched a lot of DAMs on the market but couldn't justify most of the exorbitant prices. Flight does what we need at a great value. While the UX can sometimes be a little challenging, we're seeing the platform get better. Thanks, Canto!

Pros: Ease of use
Responsiveness of customer support

Overall: I was very new (okay a complete novice) to world of digital asset management. I went through several demos from several different companies and Flight was the first one that seemed to meet all my needs now and seemed to be poised to meet any future needs I might have. From the sales person to my account representative, everyone at Canto has been very helpful and has responded very quickly when I've needed help or just had a question. Although I am still in the asset loading phase of this journey, I am very confident that Flight will work perfectly as my company's Digital Asset Management solution and that I will be knowledgeable enough (with the help of my people at Canto) to manage all of our digital assets through Flight.

Pros: Large amount of storage space, multiple download and sharing options, ability to tag assets with keywords.

Cons: Slow to upload (slow overall), the ever-changing interface (making our tediously-made "how to" guides for staff quickly irrelevant).

Overall: Before using Canto Flight, we had a huge photo storage problem. We are a K-12 school in the Bay Area with approximately 2,500 students. Having 3 campuses with a plethora of photos being taken at events and marketing photo shoots, we needed a solution that could store a large number of photos, be accessible off-campus (our old system was uploading all of the photos to an on-campus server), and that was easy for our staff to use. Canto met all of our needs! We currently have over 33,000 photos, 100 videos, and 1,000 documents stored, with over 2,000 GB (yes that's right, Gigabits) left of storage. The cloud system makes it easy for our photographers to upload photos and for us to access them without having to be on campus. Though the interface has gone through multiple changes (which has made it hard to train less-computer savvy staff), overall it's a pretty instinctual interface. Additionally, the Canto representatives have always been quick to respond with any issues that have arisen.

Comments: As a marketing team, we are needy. We require an intuitive content management system that our creative and analytical partners can operate efficiently, and Canto Flight has done just that. It is easy to manage the organization of content and visually appealing for the "consumers" that solely extract the content. Great platform, overall! My only complaint is that it can run slow sometimes, especially as more and more content is added.

Comments: We have been using Canto Flight as our Data Asset Management system for the past 6 months or so. Overall, we are very pleased with it. It is easy to use and understand, and has a lot of great features. I'm not super excited about the way its lightbox feature works and I don't like how limited my user base and storage amount is for the fee we pay each month, so those are some limitations. It's a fairly expensive subscription service and the jury is still out for us whether we will ultimately be able to continue using and affording it. But for now, we're happy with it.

Pros: Easy to use an administer. Looks nice. Lots of asset sharing options. Very responsive customer service team.

Cons: My only complaint is I wish the image previews were higher quality.

Overall: We've been using Canto's Flight for a little over a year now, and I remain highly impressed with the service. They continue to make great improvements in the features and interface. They respond to issues, questions, and requests quickly. Couldn't be happier!

Recommendations to other buyers: One of the best bargains for this kind of software available, and they continually add more features and improve the user interface.

Pros: Easy to navigate.
Great gallery views.
Downloading and sharing are a breeze.

Cons: Long download times.

Overall: We use Cumulus for all of our photo gallery needs at the Florida Museum. Overall, it is very easy to navigate and choose which photos you want to use. Downloading individual photos can be time-consuming, but the "Collection Basket" feature allows you to choose multiple photos, start the download, and move on to other things while you wait. The website also offers multiple viewing options for quick navigation. Would definitely recommend Cumulus to others.

Pros: easy to use and make galleries for clients

Cons: need to be able to view images larger before downloading

Overall: We have been using the Canto Digital Asset Management system at the Museum for years now and it has made my job as a designer considerably easier. My clients can set up gallery for to look at for photos they like and i can also review photos for multiple projects and send galleries as well. It also haas taken a huge burden off of Photography department so clients and the Design department can access photos and not bog down the photographers.

Pros: It's a standard software that allows customizing by configuring and without calling for programmers. The web interface became really powerful and facilitates workflows with external contributors, press contacts, and prospective clients.

Cons: Workgroup edition requires a costly upgrade to provide functionality for managing user groups.

Overall: Cumulus helped us to get back control over our assets. The first step was to replace file servers as a silo for media assets by a sophisticated catalog solution. Within Cumulus we could build a metadata model that really represents the structure of information we need in order to manage assets in every context. Even challenges like assuring consistency of used terminology and translating metadata could be handled by using the standard functionality of Cumulus.

Now we have a solid basis to meet the demands of media-enriched online marketing towards visual, social, and video networks.

Pros: - endless possibilities
- answers for every case of use

Overall: We´ve been using cumulus from canto since ... 4 years in our company. The time before the organization of our marketing material was not ideal. It was a problem to exchange data from division to division (national and international) - we used memory sticks or hard disks. For me, as a windows user, it was impossible to exchange data with a mac user - because we did not use the same network. Data was outworn and there was no version control or right system. Since we use cumulus this belongs to the past! The software is extremely customizable and canto reacts very fast and professional to our needs. We`ve created wonderful processes - for example between cumulus and jira (a bug- und issue-tracking-system from other software) - for example between our online marketing and graphic design divisions for the creation of web pages or newsletter. I can count a lot of examples :) !!!
We use cumulus in processes with external partners like design agency, freelancer, and photographers. They use the improved web client. Since we use cumulus we have access to data from everywhere - this is a great advantage. We love the search function based on keywords (in any language).
Cumulus will be permanently enhanced - the version 9.1 has a great adobe integration. A lot of people in my company use the batch processing function. Also, the comment function is a great advantage.

We daily use it and we love it. It has improved our work!

Recommendations to other buyers: With cumulus, you will not make a mistake!

Pros: Fast, reliable, many features, company is very close to the product

Cons: Support sometimes takes its time, self managing the system is difficult because of extensive features

Overall: After nearly two years of using the software i can say that this DAM fits perfect to our needs. The migration of the old DAM system was accompanied by Canto very professional. The handling of more than 200k of highres assets in several portals is fast and easy. Managing the files with the native or web client is fast and intuitive. Working together with the guys from Canto showed us how close they are to their product. Customized features like an InDesign package download were no problem. The good integration of the software into InDesign was one main reason for the purchase. Using the system as a distribution platform and a collaboration platform helps us a lot to do our work in a very effective way. Until now a very reliable system. Due to the versatile possibilities the software offers, sometimes the handling seems a bit complex. All in all we are very happy with this system and looking forward to a DAM good future.

Comments: Very complex. Requires significant training effort - and Training effort is expensive. It would be good to create simplified modes as the rights management. There is a good solution. Cumulus Is difficult for small/midsize businesses. There will be staff required only for Cumulus. The utilization possibilities are very large - too large to manage it by the way.
Too many possibilities are hidden in subfunctions. You can see that Cumulus has grown over a very long time and no operating concept can be detected. The software is not logical, not user-friendly. There is no current user manual in German!

Comments: We have really enjoyed Cumulus at our Vet Med college, and we have used it now for many years. Pros: The product is solidly built and does what it promises.

Cons: Like with most enterprise software systems, there is a learning curve when first configuring a deployment

Overall: Over the past few years Canto has worked hard to push their software to meet the increasing Data Asset Management demands of the corporate world. Cumulus has become a business critical system, cataloging hundreds of records a day. It has allowed us to streamline our production workflow and maximize our efficiency. Their improved API has let us integrate Cumulus with our other systems, making it the nucleus that delivers content throughout the company.

Pros: The flexibility of deployment and implementation was paramount for our organization, as we ended up hosting the solution on premise due to our large file sizes. We love how the metadata is written back to the asset. Additionally, the various ways to access the assets through the web, through apps or through a desktop client made the user adoption go very smoothly.

Cons: Customizing the software during the installation and implementation phase was more time consuming than we had anticipated and with the new releases of software and portals we have encountered some delays and hiccups (we are working through them). Out of the "box" reporting is significantly lacking compared to the other options, but you can buy a 3rd party addin for that.

The visibility on where are assets have gone and where they are going is greatly increased, in addition to increasing the visibility of knowing what assets we have while enabling a strong search functionality has decreased duplication of assets and increased productivity and efficiency.

Pros: Its customizability - You can make this software work in the way you need it to work.

Cons: Sometimes it would be nice to be able to disable features you don't need - sometimes the options are far too many.

Overall: Canto's Cumulus software has been a wonderful tool for storing and retrieving digital assets. I began as an Archivist with a group who was already using the software, but had not really taken much time to learn what it can do. That was my job. Almost immediately I hit the ground running, and I could not be happier with Cumulus as a tool. It is incredibly customizable, and you can manipulate the software to do pretty much anything digital assets management might require. That might be it's only downside too: The software is so customizable that it may take a little bit f tinkering to get things exactly the way you want them, but their training staff do an excellent job of making sure the users aren't lost in a sea of options. They do a wonderful job of helping you customize the software to make it work for you. I sleep well at night knowing that Cumulus is storing our digital assets, and I do not worry about data loss. Cumulus is digital assets management at its finest.

Pros: After getting the old system upgraded, my client was able to offload some of the work the creative team previously did, to an account services team. That team was able to fulfill client requests for images without getting the creative group involved. It helped speed the responses to clients and vendors as well as balance the workload.

Cons: So far we have not had any internal issues or complaints!

Overall: The system is not "heavy" on the infrastructure -it works how you would hope asset management would work. On a few occasions, we have needed to reach out to support for help and they were everything you could hope for. In one instance, my client was not sure if they still had a support contract, but they also had an issue causing some business impact. Due to some turnover and changing of rolls, my client could not find the correct ownership information either.

Canto support helped get my client their historical invoices, get them back on a support contract, and help solve the problem. It's important to note: support helped me solve the problem, before my client paid the invoice on the contract. I really thought that was impressive, that Canto recognized the severity of the situation, and was willing to help, when they were perfectly within the right to not help.

Comments: We use Cumulus to catalog both our photographs and our designer jobs.

Previously we only used it for our massive photograph archives.

We recently moved to a new server and it became a searchable nightmare to find our jobs in archive. The solution was to catalog them through Cumulus. This allowed us to search quickly and also to allow the designers to pull the assets to their system as needed. The time we use now is a fraction of the time used previously and when you translate that to wage resources it has and will continue to pay for itself.

Comments: Good DAM system for getting our communications specialists to start share their digital assets, and particularly stop storing them haphazardly on their personal systems. For that goal, the managed central repository with meaningful tagging and organizing, Cumulus has worked very well.
Also good integration with our opensource / LAMP infrastructure. The tomcat based web service and filesystem based storage makes it an easy fit with our other services, and for easy backups.

Lots of different search capabilities.

They continually have webinar¿s that are very helpful to learning more about how the system works. I also attended one of the hands on seminars at their head quarts in San Francisco. I was a weeklong class that proved to be a great resource. When I have questions I continually go back to my notes form the week to find the answers I need. Comments: For an average user looking to take on an admin role (me!), Cumulus takes some time to learn all the tools to customize it to your teams needs. It is the 'problem' you face when given layers upon layers of options. However, it is worth the time and effort because once you get the hang of it, this software quickly becomes a necessity for any team. Our group of designers have a long legacy of products to manage ranging from quark files found on a floppy disc to mobile apps to multilingual video projects. Cumulus simplifies and streamlines our process across the board, cuts back errors and increases communication. We are 6 months into lightly launching this to our team and training has been simple to teach because of an intuitive online user interface. When problems do arise, the customer service team at Cumulus is quick to customize our needs and walk through helping us find a solution.

Comments: Canto's Cumulus software has been a wonderful tool for storing and retrieving digital assets. Comments: We've been using Canto Cumulus since version one or two, back when it was a little Macintosh program, competing with Kodak's Shoebox. It's gotten much larger, far more capable, far more complex, and weirdly complicated. Cumulus is among the better asset management products you could buy. We now run the Enterprise version with ten seats and we have three and a half administrators. Cumulus Enterprise requires skilled IT support and should include a maintenance contract with Canto or one of their partners.
Cumulus ingests files (almost any digital file) into a category-based taxonomy. EXIF and XMP metadata fields flow right into Cumulus (after some careful process design and testing). Cumulus Enterprise copies our assets to a central storage location (a server that is backed up and managed by our IT), providing secure and safe copies of assets as they are cataloged.
Administering and running Cumulus requires an appetite for and appreciation of library sciences, metadata, taxonomies, organization, databases, asset preservation, your corporate history, and complex processes. It also helps if your Cumulus admins have some customer service experience because your users will want their interface to run differently. Cumulus's many (very many) administration and preference options makes accommodating their needs fairly easy.
One type of file Cumulus does to handle well out of the box is video. Basic ingest and cataloging functions are available but, if video is a major part of your DAM needs, you may want to add a video module to the package to handle your file format conversions, downloads, and streaming previews.
We like Cumulus.
We didn't always like Cumulus.
It's been a long, not always fun, trip.
There is nothing easy or quick about digital asset management with Cumulus¿or any other DAM. The software is only one part of your overall strategy. Do your research.

Comments: We started using Cumulus earlier this year and so far my impression is that it works very well for our company to organize and share digital assets within teams, across departments, or to external vendors. It's very clean and user friendly, and the training we received at the rollout was helpful.

I have noticed some glitchiness and lag time when downloading images, although I think that may just be a product of our server connection.

Overall, Cumulus does a great job of helping us keep our digital assets current and ensuring that they can be utilized by those who need them, both internally and externally.

Comments: Cumulus Workgroup allows us to manage a multitude of assets of varying sorts across multiple folder structures and servers then easily locate them without wandering blindly through the asset terrain. I also like that I can apply a multitude of categories to assets (if I want) making them even easier to locate in a comprehensive way which a folder structure and/or naming convention will not allow. I also like that I can deliver one asset in multiple sizes, color spaces, resolutions and with specific or generic watermarks without needing to maintain a bucket of all these possibilities in the asset server space.

Some of the functionality, such as watermarking, is limited awkward and clunky. I often find myself needing to create complex actions in order to accomplish something that I think is fairly logical straightforward and simple using these interfaces. I also find that the interfaces and specific user settings are not particularly intuitively displayed which makes it difficult for users to utilize all of the various features without a lot of instruction. Help documentation can be somewhat labyrinthine. Additonally, some of the asset conversion (especially with regard to the interpretation and conversion of color spaces and file formats) leaves a bit to be desired in terms of final output.

Overall, Cumulus fulfills our needs for an organized system of asset management and delivery with a minimum of redundancy. While it seems that wasting server space with multiple asset forms and sizes is almost inevitable, Cumulus has allowed us to have multiple "master" asset stores which are mostly uncluttered with bags of redundancy. This is also important because many of our users need to provide one set of assets in multiple varying forms and resolutions, which Cumulus easily accomplishes without a lot of struggle. Through well-defined naming coventions and folder structures and the manifold software features, our active and legacy files are complete, well organized and easily accessible even after they've been removed to storage media.

Comments: We have been using Cumulus at our organization for at least 4 years now, and we use it internally for organizing and cataloging artwork and externally to show customers designs and availability. Its a great tool and we are always finding new ways of expanding its uses.
There is definitely a learning curve getting started, and we are still learning things about the software - features we didn't realize were in there just because we didn't know we were looking for it! However after switching over from Extensis' Portfolio, our Art team wouldn't go back.
The community forums are a great resource with lots of helpful users and we've used Pro support services a few times, and the team there is really amazing and great to work with. They took the time to learn our business and how and why we wanted to do something, then came back with a few implementations they could not only put in for us, but train on us thoroughly on using them.
Would definitely recommend.

Comments: FYI: We are currently using version 8.6 of this software.
pros:
1. Searchablity of metadata - You can create customized metadata fields and make them searchable.
2. User Permissions-the user permissions carry over to the web client interface making administration easier when you have users on the desktop client and web client.
3. User Grouping- this may be better served under #2 but being able to group users makes assigning permission easier also.

Cons:
1. Adobe Indesign integration - this version doesn't seem to integrate well with Indesign.
2. web client/sites customization - customization of the newer "sites" files seems more restrictive than the older versions.

Overall:
I think this is a good software for asset management. There are still some issues that may or may not have been ironed out in later versions, but i'd recommend it to anyone looking for DAM solution.
