Commercial Property and Casualty Underwriting Software
ISI understands that commercial insurance is complex, but
running your commercial lines business doesn't need to be. ISIās web based
solutions can help you streamline and automate your business processes.
ISI has helped a number of the world's leading commercial
insurers build a customizable online "underwriting box" which improves
customer service while lowering expense ratios. The underwriting box is
configured to meet the insurerās risk tolerance and automatically accepts the
business which falls inside these parameters while creating underwriting
referrals based on the exceptions to the rules. For these riskier or more
complex policies which do not meet ćin the boxä criteria, the system provides
decision-support systems which allow underwriters securely collaborate with
colleagues via the web. Sales reps, brokers, actuaries and underwriters all
work with the same, accurate, up to date information and the entire team makes
better, faster decisions in a cost-effective manner.

Specialty P&C Software
ISI knows that specialty lines require special
functionality.

cargo insurers. It eliminates the need for paper documents,
providing a browser based platform to issue electronic certificates
and to post declarations.

provides dramatic increases in productivity for field inspectors
and underwriters.
Other specialties
Other types of specialty lines may require: the management
of unique risks, the collection of special underwriting information,
proprietary backend processes or other unique IT functionality.
Without ISI, specialty insurers face two unpleasant and imperfect
alternatives: “off the shelf” solutions that
don't meet unique needs and expensive, time-consuming custom
code. ISI offers a better way. We understand all aspects
of specialty insurance: risk management, underwriting decision
making, distribution etc. No matter how specialized the insurance
you offer, most of the functionality you need is already
contained in our solutions. All of our products are written
to conform to the latest web-based standards, so they already
meet your IT infrastructure requirements.
Instead of custom code, consider a custom ISI implementation.
Our property and casualty experts can customize our solutions
to give you the precise functionality you require. You'll
be able to run your business exactly the way you want to,
without the risks, costs and delays of custom solutions.

Intelligent Integration of All Modules
Can your underwriting team share policy information with your claims unit? What about policy administration and accounting - are they fully integrated? Do agents and brokers have the information necessary to make decisions that will boost your book of business?
Let’s face it: many insurance back office systems force departments to operate in silos. They require reliance on outdated paper-based policy administration processes and isolate distribution channels. It’s time for a change.
WebWriter™ BackOffice is unparalleled in its class as the premier solution to back office insurance business needs. It represents a comprehensive system that will efficiently run your property & casualty insurance company - and get rid of the silos.
All Modules Allow You To Run Your Business Your Way.
Designed by insurance professionals with years of experience as underwriters, managers, actuaries, brokers and IT experts, WebWriter is not simply a technology platform. It’s a catalyst for better business.
WebWriter BackOffice is web-enabled and facilitates all back office workflow for effective insurance underwriting, distribution and management. Underwriters can quickly design and implement specialty programs and new lines to react to market demands and opportunities. Technology is now a tool for efficiency and profitability, rather than a constraint.
Technology Architecture Common To All Modules
ISI’s WebWriter platform uses the latest mainstream technology to deliver an n-tier, web-enabled, Windows-based application. The result for insurers is open flexibility and smooth integration.
The application business layer utilizes XML as the communication method and provides interfaces for accessing business layer functionality from multiple technology platforms including EJB (J2EE), web services and queues such as IBM MQ. This allows external applications to integrate with WebWriter middle tier processes. This facilitates heterogeneous external communications, which offers unprecedented ease of integration with existing systems.
Work Centre
This is where the rubber hits the road.
The Work Centre module is the major leverage point for the system. It’s a console for the user to view, schedule and execute everyday activities through an intuitive interface. The
Work Centre gives you greater consistency and improved accountability in key marketing, CRM, underwriting, claims processing and cash disbursement activities.
Work Centre pushes information throughout the network rather than relying on users to pull the information they need - a unique advantage in today’s competitive market. Through a simple mouse click, processes can be performed manually or executed automatically via WebWriter software components.
A unique feature can also automatically obtain approval for activities outside of employee authority limits by initiating a “vote” or “escalation” through the Work Centre. This not only provides increased management control, but also improves accountability for decision-making throughout the organization.
Work Centre transforms your workflow by:
- Automating repetitive tasks
- Creating consistent processes for each department
- Simplifying cross training
- Enhancing activity scheduling and time management
- Tracking productivity
- Pinpointing bottleneck processes
- Triggering pre-determined events to ensure quality control
- Work Centre automates process workflow, reduces errors, speeds processing and trims training time for new employees. The results are improved task management for employees, a boost in productivity and superior customer service.
Broker/Agent Manager
This powerful solution brings empowerment and efficiency to the evaluation of your front-line sales team. Broker/Agent Manager allows you to manage vital aspects of the insurance distribution channel, including:
- Commission rate assignment
- Profitability analysis by broker or agent
- Production tracking
- Billing and account information
- Down-stream communication tools.
Through WebWriter Portal, agents and brokers access information securely through the Internet. This streamlines key functions, such as:
- Prospecting, Marketing and CRM
- Quotation
- Policy purchase transactions
- Client, Policy and Claim lookup
- Policy and claim review
- Mid-term policy change transactions
- Notification of loss transactions
Client Relationship Manager (CRM)
Technology is the key to strengthening relationships with your customers.
WebWriter BackOffice closely tracks all activities in the client management cycle, allowing service staff to easily locate customer information, provide quick answers to questions and drill down to lower levels of detail.
The CRM module is closely integrated with the knowledge management module and gives service staff speedy access to previous policy documents. Employees have the information they need to create a superior client service experience.
Policy Processing
How quickly can you get at your policyholder data?
The Policy Administration module uses a unique tree-style navigation and the "information at-your-fingertips” interface to view the entire policy lifecycle. This consistent interface allows for easier cross-training of staff and also reduces input errors by identifying those fields essential to the generation of a policy.
Through an engineered policy processing workflow, WebWriter BackOffice dramatically improves the productivity levels of service staff by minimizing the keystrokes necessary to issue a policy or make policy changes, This has a direct impact on an insurers’ expense ratios. The system facilitates all critical policy transactions, including:
- Prospecting and marketing
- Quotation
- New policy processing
- Mid-term policy changes
- Renewal processing
- Policy billing
- Reinsurance assignment and ceding
- Cancellations
- Reinstatements
- Re-writes
- Cancellation/re-writes.
The “information at-your-fingertips” design provides users with rich data mining capabilities through multi-parameter search screens. The fully integrated platform gives cross-functional access with claims, accounting, reinsurance and inspections.
The WebWriter Rule Engine can automatically trigger events within the policy processing module, such as the addition of new diary items, follow-up reminders, document creation and inspection requests. These events are based on an insurer’s pre-determined parameters and executed automatically by the Rule Engine.
Claims
WebWriter BackOffice puts you in control of the claims process.
The system defines multiple categories for payments and links groups of claims to events, such as catastrophes. Management can easily assess the status and category of any claim, whether it is a personal injury claim, a disaster-related event or a claim in litigation. Claims expenses are tracked at a detailed level, allowing management to run flexible expense reports based on multiple parameters. Insurers can also track all third parties to claims to pinpoint potential fraudulent activity.
The Claims module uses the same tree-style navigation and “information at-your-fingertips” interface as the rest of the WebWriter BackOffice system, providing further consistency in various functional areas. Day-to-day, crucial claims processes have been automated or engineered for even greater improvements in productivity. These include:
- Creation of claims documents
- Addition of diary items, activities and necessary follow-ups to the Work Centre
- Claim reserve adjustments
- Claim salvage and subrogation recoveries
- Reinsurance recoveries
- Payment processing.
WebWriter BackOffice also manages activities associated with internal and external adjuster environments including accounts, authority levels and payment processing.
The Claims module is a valuable management tool in combating fraud while maximizing claims service and productivity.
Reinsurance
Unlike many insurance applications, WebWriter BackOffice integrates reinsurance functions right into the platform.
This means underwriters and adjusters are always aware of the reinsurance position of each policy. The system automatically triggers the applicable treaties once retention levels are reached and reflects all transactions in the appropriate accounting ledger.
The reinsurance treaties are defined by the insurer and can be customized to link to business rules in the WebWriter Rule Engine.
Assignment of reinsurance can either be automatic or user-initiated. Once processed, the appropriate reinsurance information flows through to the claims staff.
Reinsurance Administration
Reinsurance models can be formulated using layering of multiple reinsurers to apply excess layers or quota share percentages. Models can be applied at the policy level or product level through the execution of business rules through the WebWriter Rule Engine.
WebWriter BackOffice is capable of handling the following types of reinsurance treaties:
- Co-insurance
- Third Surplus
- Facultative
- Quota Share
- First Surplus
- Excess of Loss
- Second Surplus
WebWriter BackOffice also manages the insurer’s list of approved reinsurers and all pertinent information, such as payment terms, placement terms, commission rates and contact information.
Accounting
WebWriter BackOffice is the system you need to effortlessly integrate all insurance and general business transactions.
It provides real-time financial information, which offers management timely and accurate information for decision-making based on real financial results. Data is collected in multiple ledgers, including accounts payable, accounts receivable and general ledger. The insurer defines all financial information into a customized chart of accounts.
It supports multiple Strategic Business Units (SBU’s) and has capabilities to provide financial roll-ups for each SBU, in addition to multiple branches, subsidiaries and parent companies. WebWriter BackOffice also has multicurrency capabilities to meet the needs of international insurers.
Thanks to the tight integration of the accounting system into all functional areas, WebWriter BackOffice provides users with a truly cross-functional view of an organization’s finances.
Reporting
The proprietary reporting system within WebWriter BackOffice provides a comprehensive set of standard reports for insurers to analyze performance and make better decisions about their business.
ISI will also produce customized reports, charts and graphs for insurers, presenting data at either summary or detail levels. Reports can be exported in 12 different file formats including WebWriter native PDF (portable document format). Each WebWriter module has its own set of comprehensive standard reports, as well as an advanced ad-hoc reporting tool.
Permissions can be assigned to each report for information security and users can also access reports over the web.
Knowledge Management
The Knowledge Management module is a vital hub for knowledge exchange within the WebWriter BackOffice system.
All information that flows throughout the company is aggregated in the knowledge management environment based on client, policy, claim, user or any other parameter. This knowledge is then accessible from all areas of the WebWriter system.
In addition to scanned paper documents, printed documents are automatically spooled into the knowledge management system, virtually eliminating the need for paper-based files. Through integration with the Work Centre, the Knowledge Management system lets insurers distribute pertinent memos, reports, mail, documents and articles pertinent to certain users or groups of users. It provides timely information so your staff can make better decisions.
WebWriter Portal
As a pioneer of web-based technology for the insurance industry, ISI has integrated its groundbreaking WebWriter Portal into the BackOffice enterprise system.
WebWriter Portal is the most advanced web-based solution on the market for the property and casualty insurance industry. It is proven to handle a volume of 10,000 quotations per day in a production environment. With this powerful tool integrated into the WebWriter BackOffice application, insurers can leverage the Internet to cut expense ratios and improve customer service.
WebWriter Broker Portal allows agents and brokers to process transactions over the web, including:
- Prospecting and marketing
- Quotation
- New policy processing
- Mid-term policy changes
- Renewal processing
- Cancellations
- Reinstatements
- Re-writes

Insurers can also use WebWriter Portal to pursue direct-to-consumer opportunities, such as association or group discount marketing. WebWriter Client Portal allows customers to process quotation and policy purchase transactions in a secure web environment.
Security
In today’s digital business environment, information security is paramount.
WebWriter BackOffice employs the unique Access Control Lists security methodology throughout the system. This allows insurers to set permissions on various levels of information, from policy notes right up to reports and high-level business rules.
Security and access are also determined and enforced at field, policy and module level through the WebWriter Rule Engine.
WebWriter Inspection
WebWriter Inspection is the most comprehensive web-based system on the market for field inspection management, execution and analysis.
ISI has harnessed this industry-leading technology within the BackOffice system to provide insurers with a tool that can cut inspection preparation time in half.
By coupling the latest in XP Tablet technology and an intuitive web-browser user interface, WebWriter Inspection is unsurpassed in managing an in-house or outsourced multi-inspector environment. The system not only provides effective management, scheduling and reporting tools, it automates report writing and recommendation letters, which allows inspectors to spend more time in the field.

The Rule Engine is a Java-based, dynamic decision-making application that provides insurers the ability to make complex decisions and calculate sophisticated algorithms. The industry-leading field inspection and
loss control software application
Whether your organization is an insurance company,
a large corporation or a government agency, chances are that your risk
management team relies heavily on field inspections for making loss control
decisions. With most organizations, these critical decisions are based on
the piles of paper and disorganized data collected in the field. Not only
does this dramatically reduce the productivity of staff, it increases
the amount of uncertainty within the decision-making process.
WebWriter™ Inspection is a portable, easy to
use software solution that will transform the way your organization
handles loss control inspections. It consists of a PC Tablet that
gives in-house or third party inspectors the capability to record
standard inspection data and forward this electronically to decision-makers.
Mobile Technology
Traditional inspection methods involve paper-based
processes, data re-entry and disparate sources of information,
such as hard copy
photos. WebWriter™ Inspection solves these problems by providing
a PC Tablet tool and software that can integrate information,
data and photos into a standard, accessible format. Inspectors
fill out only one report on site and this standardized data gets
fed directly into the organization’s centralized database.
Now that’s progress!
Information at your Fingertips
WebWriter™ Inspection provides all of the data collected by field
inspectors in a consistent format for decision-makers. This includes:
- Diary Correspondence
- Form data
- Digital photographs
- Site diagrams
- Inspector recommendations and risk violations
- Support documentation in any format
- Risk summary reports

Extend Your Reach.
Simply put, WebWriter Portal moves key insurance business processes
out of the back office and delivers them to end users in an intuitive
web-browser interface. In today's dynamic business environment,
transacting business by mail, fax or telephone is no longer an
option. Every member of the insurance value chain wants information
in real-time in order to make decisions; in fact – they demand
it.
As one of the pioneers of web-based solutions for the insurance
industry, ISI knows the factors which contribute to higher productivity,
lower loss ratios and greater client satisfaction, and these were
incorporated into every aspect of WebWriter
Portal.
Speed
ISI's WebWriter Platform technology utilized by WebWriter
Portal executes key processes in the proprietary “smart-browser”,
allowing users to obtain immediate feedback to data entry errors
and validation violations. This leads to faster transaction response
times for users and at the same time, minimizes processing load
on the application tier.
WebWriter Portal utilizes industry-standard XML for transactional
exchanges, providing users with unparalleled response time on requests.
Ease-of-use
The customizable, intuitive user interface is delivered to the
broker or client via HTML in a standard web browser, which minimizes
training time for users. System navigation is simplified by logical
workflow which is configured through the WebWriter Rule Engine-based
management console.
The revolutionary architecture of the WebWriter Platform makes
it possible for users to change underwriting information on the
fly to receive updated premium figures or jump from an incomplete
section to enter other data without receiving validation errors.
This functionality enhances the user experience, increases loyalty
to the site and reinforces the insurer’s brand.
The system also provides 24/7 availability to end users for transacting
business during off business hours or across multiple time zones.
Maintainability
The sheer elegance of the WebWriter Platform architecture allows
new fields or changes to fields in the insurer’s legacy system
to be reflected in the backend response XML and communicated to
the front-end web tier with minimal programming changes.
Business, underwriting and workflow rules can be easily maintained – reducing
IT support expenses. The web-based maintenance console also controls
user profiles, password and access levels for both internal and
external users.
Intelligence
By providing an intuitive interface for insurers to maintain business
rules, WebWriter Portal facilitates better underwriting decisions.
This powerful tool removes subjectivity from underwriting by basing
workflow and approval decisions on pre-defined parameters; these
can include:
- Underwriting approval limit verses broker loss ratio
- Automatic approval exceptions based on claims history
- Approval escalation based on underwriter seniority
- Broker authority levels for insured limits
- Broker authority levels for rating discretion
- Automated messaging based on Broker or Underwriter authority levels
- Dynamic screen creation based on class of business, user or underwriting criteria
Field Proven Technology
The industry-leading WebWriter Platform allows insurers the flexibility
to deploy the system on various application platforms. WebWriter
Portal is also completely backend independent, and facilitates
communication with any existing legacy system through an XML interface.

WebWriter Rule Engine
WebWriter™ Rule Engine
is a leading-edge application for rating property and casualty
insurance risks. The Rule Engine makes rating decisions based on
rates, differentials and rules for a given risk and is easily maintained
to adapt to changing business needs.
Rule Engine can also be tailored
to suit the needs of a banks, investment brokerages or any other
organization using complex algorithms
to make discrete decisions.
The system utilizes 100% J2EE compatible
Java code base to ensure portability and scalability from the
smallest to the largest
enterprise and a completely new user-friendly administration
program makes
it easier to create and maintain rules. The program is written
completely in pure, thin-client HTML and is accessible from
any recent version browser.
Risk Assessment
Whether you are an insurance company,
a bank, an investment brokerage or any other organization using
complex algorithms to make discrete
decisions, you’ll find tremendous value in Version 3.0 of
the WebWriter™ Rule Engine.
Version 3.0 Rule Engine
So what are the benefits of the new version
3.0? In a word: many. In fact, this version gives insurers a
more user-friendly, easier
and faster solution. Here’s what we mean:
100% J2EE compatible Java code base ensures portability and scalability
from the smallest to the largest enterprise.
A completely new user-friendly administration program makes it
easier to create and maintain rules. The program is written in
100% pure, thin-client HTML and is accessible from any recent version
browser.
Faster than ever execution speed represents quicker quotes and
policy administration. For example, a 4 car Automobile Policy with
5,000 rule lines calculates 15 quotes per second on a 1Ghz Intel
clone system with 256MB of memory.
The engine can easily be deployed in an ASP environment, thanks
to the revised security model. This allows full object level security
for users and groups, conceptually modeled after UNIX and Windows
NT file system security.
Database independence extends to tested database environments,
such as Oracle 8i/9i, MS Sql Server and IBM DB2.
Adapter architecture ensures the widest compatibility with disparate
systems across enterprise. Supported communication models include:
- XML;
- Native Java Api;
- SOAP;
- COBRA/COM; and
- IBM MQSeries;
A wide variety of supported communication protocols ensures that
large and small systems can communicate with the rules engine to
evaluate algorithms — anywhere, anytime. This allows simple
deployment into pre-existing environments, such as legacy systems
or older client-server systems.
Insurance Applications
WebWriter Rule Engine is well suited to the insurance industry.
Built on top of ISI’s WebWriter™ platform, it was designed
with reliability, performance and scalability in mind. Here are
some practical and effective uses for the rule engine in the insurance
marketplace:
Centralized rating systems across some or all business lines. The
rule engine can evaluate and rate everything from complex commercial
policies to standard automobile policies.
Rule-based underwriting evaluation. Your business people can deploy
rules using the engine’s integrated HTML management console,
while your IT department integrates insurance events on other platforms
with rule execution. This allows legacy systems or other types
of applications to use a single centralized rule engine layer.
Perform discrete complex calculations. This can be applied to event
such as coverage limit evaluations (such as Boeckh evaluations),
pro rata, short-rate or any other decision which requires analysis
and/or calculations.
Key Engine Features Applicable to Insurance
A complete life cycle management of rules permits versioning of
rules and tables when changes are made. Rule evaluation is based
on the most applicable rule as it existed at a given point in time.
Integrated deployment/testing mode gives rule creators and/or maintainers
the ability to decide when formulas or formula changes become active.
A complete integrated security model allows formulas, tables, messages
and actions within the rule engine to be locked down according
to group or user.
The open design model provides infinite possibilities in connecting
to external or internal systems. For example, a company could allow
brokers to set up their own customer quoting site using a Web services
model to call rating algorithms on a company hosted rate server.
Alternatively, a broker management system could call the underwriting
or rating service from within the broker’s office, offering
a method for integrating the company’s underwriting rules
with the broker’s data entry in real-time.
Future Product Outlook
Look for the following additions to the Rule Engine family currently
in development:
XMLSync
This product will give mobile users on laptops and even 3rd party
rating systems the ability to synchronize and share information
with the rules engine.
ScenarioTest
This product will allow for automated formula
testing.
KEY BENEFITS:
Q: Is the WebWriter Rules Engine
scalable?
A: Absolutely. Using a pure
Java architecture, the system is a set of lightweight java
objects built in
coordination
with ISI’s WebWriter platform and offering J2EE Compatibility.
For the most robust and scalable applications, we recommend
taking advantage of J2EE container services, such as connection
pooling and thread management in industry standard application
servers like IBM Websphere, BEA s Weblogic Server or Netscape’s
IPlanet.
Q: Why choose WebWriter™ Rules
Engine product over the plethora of other vendor solutions?
A:
Frankly, all the products offer similar features and
some have long established track records. What places ISI’s
product ahead of the curve is the ability for users to
manage and deploy their own rules without programmers.
Further, our architecture is leading-edge based on industry
standard Java technologies
