Pros: Reports. Co-sourcing of billing office. Pre-go live project planning. Support at go-live.

Cons: Document management. Task Assignment Overrides. Customer Service. Ability to solve problems in a timely manner. Lack of in-depth training necessary for such a complex system.

Overall: If I could give negative stars for customer support (after go-live) I would but that is not an option.
Overall Athena has not lived up to its hype. Document management for a large practice with multiple locations and two specialties is horrendous. Surgery scheduling module is painful as well. We knew that going into this product but we held out hope that our schedulers would catch on, unfortunately, it just does not work for our practice at this point. The new scheduling module might be better so we are holding out hope. If considering this product make sure you fully understand the buckets and document management. And I mean spend more time learning these pieces of the system than you could have ever possibly imagined. Overall, It is a struggle.

Recommendations to other buyers: Do your homework. Call others w/ Athena and not just the groups they tell you to call. Map out your document flow not just once, not twice, but at least 6 times so you can anticipate bottlenecks and identify red flags w/ their document management process. Don't set up two departments (we have pain and neurosurgery) as it creates way more problems than it's worth. Make sure you fully understand how the buckets and spend a great deal of time on this aspect of the system.

Pros: The software is user-friendly. The staff is well trained and very very polite, patient and professional.

Cons: They do not have an office in my hometown where I can go to work for them.

Overall: We have been using this software since October 2014. They are more than a software vendor. They have a staff that is full of knowledgeable professionals that can assist in every facet of our practice. They were the best source for making the transition from ICD9 to ICD 10. They are able to assist in every facet of our practice by dealing with both software issues and or Best Practic Management.

Recommendations to other buyers: Do not hesitate to call and ask for help if you are sure about something. There are many bells and whistle available to make your job easy. You should stop to see if there may be a shortcut to an operation and there usually is something that can make your job easier.

Comments: Athena has a great and robust reporting module especially helpful for practices attesting for meaningful use and PCMH, the problem with this is that it is difficult to do on your own and requires a Customer service ticket which takes a long time to get answered.

The charting is easy once you get your templates setup. If you do not do this on the front end (during implementation) getting help to do later is impossible and you will need help as it is not very intuitive. Many templates were lost during one of their upgrades without warning so it has been difficult to rebuild them. We have grown and added locations while on Athena and because they are your primary biller if they do not verify all of the credentialing that you send them you cannot bill. This was problematic because you cannot directly talk to the persons doing this there is always a go-between with Athena.

I love the EPCS for patients requiring a schedule, as a pediatrician I have quite a few ADHD pts and nice not to worry about assessing where prescriptions really lost! No need for paper. However, with one of their upgrades, I can no longer save medications so must write sig and quantity for every medication each time which is time-consuming.

Lastly, the promised billing has failed our practice. The workflow was to be we would not need a biller and get increased revenue with clean claims. We see a large Medicaid population and were not told that they had virtually no experience with that and even going to them with specifics as to the problem it would still take upwards a month to fix. Not only have we not gotten rid of our biller but increased his time as many Medicaid claims he submits thru the portal yet Athena charges us for this. The account managers are unavailable in meetings vacations or no longer with the company.
Pros: Reporting, Easy charting once template is created, EPCS, Integration of charges to the superbill
Cons: Customer support, E-prescribing, Not reasonable expectation to not need a biller, Overpriced, not a good fit if you are a practice that adds services, providers, or locations, must use their bank to receive payments and then it takes 1-2 days to get transferred to your business account

Comments: Great program. Enjoy that we have the ability to customize but wish we could go even further. Pros: Allows to quickly see what an actual encounter will look like at the end after completing the various templates.

Cons: 99%. It is a mess. Limited monitor "real estate"; really, medications and prescriptions are a large part of an encounter and with Streamline you get a small box to scroll in for meds. Classic had access to the entire monitor for meds. Unable to create QuickPicks or easily switch between different lab companies if needed.

Overall: Lost a lot of functionality with Streamline. Unable to choose lab of choice or change way to submit an Rx during encounter. Miss quickpicks. Unable to save multiple labs for frequent tests that use different labs. Please ATHENA go back to Classic. It just needed a few more "jump to" tabs was all.

Recommendations to other buyers: IF you can get ATHENA Classic view do so; it is VERY good. It has its issues (document management is an issue) however STreamline is beyond horrible. Very odd that as an UPGRADE it is worse than its predecessor. It is possible to sell your cadillac and buy a bicycle instead I presume. This is what it feels like.

Pros: Being to configure your own facesheet., current flow sheets

Cons: Reporting issues that can't have dates set. Streamline can show labs, but you would have to build flowsheets. Some of the features of the flow sheets have been separated, when having them together was a pro

Overall: I like the flow sheets that I can review multiple measures including a variety of labs, over a period of time. Also can see pertinent medications, variety of labs.

Recommendations to other buyers: I would add more filters to the quality management reporting. Being able to set dates for a specific time. I would like some features of the population health for care management, and reporting

Comments: As a sonographer it is my job to receive the order, complete the exam, state what exams where done and let the physician know the exam is completed and waiting for the final interpretation. The majority of my orders are not seen right there on the intake page or they don't have the proper indication and I have to generate the order myself in order for billing to take place. There are way to many steps for me at the end of my exam and it shouldn't take more than a minute to complete.

Pros: I am very happy with the ease of submitting claims and the follow-up by Athena.

Cons: I think there are parts that are not user friendly and confusing about how to do. I have more or less given up on trying to call and get an issue resolved. I have spent lots of time just holding for someone to answer a question. Most of the time the first person you get can not answer the question

Overall: Overall I am very happy with Athena. I do have some issues with getting problems resolved. It would be nice to have a contact person who could help your practice. It was great in the beginning when we were going through training but now it is difficult to get questions answered.

Cons: We have just begun to use the new Streamlined release. We are extremely unhappy with the "Chart" portion of the release. I want the previous Face Sheet back on the Chart so I can, much more quickly, find and access what I need from the Chart. I tried to make a comment to his effect on the available Blog, and it wouldn't take my comment. VERY frustrating!

Overall: Overall, I think Athena was a very good product. It is my only EMR experience so I have nothing to compare it to; however, I find it was easy to learn and maneuver. Our entire staff is truly struggling with the Chart portion and having to click around multiple times to arrive at a place that used to take one click. I do not like the new release.

Pros: It comes with Epocrates. Not once since we have had this software has it went down. Customer support is great at fixing your problems right away.

Cons: When adding Lab orders and Imaging orders if you are using different facilities sometimes you have to go in and change the facility or the items you are trying to order will not pull up. It is frustrating when you are in a rush. The software will assume you are ordering for just one facility and tell you order not available at this facility so you will have to take extra steps to change to facility to order the specific item. Therefore you are switching back and forth between different screens. This does not happen for me often but when it does happen of course I am always backed up with patients.

Overall: Initially Athena appears intimidating to use, but once you get the hang of it, its a breeze. I really like that it comes with epocrates.

Recommendations to other buyers: Overall I think this software is great to use. I think the minor issues will be worked out and I recommend this product. I like it alot better than some of the other products I have used in the past.

Pros: 1) You can access the phone number from the chart.
2) You can reference visit notes while creating a patient case.

Cons: Having to click multiple places to get to a document that you used to be able to automatically view and print is extremely inefficient. Many useful features that were used on a daily basis have been completely taken away. Athena reps were also rude and untrained. One of our employees actually had to show them how to do something. This should have been tested in a test environment before rolling out live. IT should talk with the daily users prior to making a significant change like this.

Overall: On 7/14, I was notified by a member of our clinical staff that the entire practice would need to go through this training, that it wasn't only for the nurses and physicians. I called Athena for verification and was told that only nurses and physicians needed to follow the training guides.; that it would not affect Billing or any other department. When I pulled the individual within my practice who pointed this out to me to discuss the issue with the Athena rep on the phone, we pointed out that there was special training specifically for the Front Desk Receptionists. It was also mentioned that the Classic view would go away, leaving a Non-Clinician and Clinician view. These affect the entire practice. The rep changed his answer to it may be beneficial to let your receptionists know of this training, but no one else needs it. I went home that even and sat through all of the training. Out entire staff did need to review this information, clinical staff needed Clinical information while clerical staff needed the Front Desk piece because it touched on many things that everyone uses: how to find documents, how to find tasks, how to change views, etc. Friday I sent all clerical staff an e-mail letting them know that training needed to be completed by Monday evening as we had been mislead by Athena, that it wasn't just clinical staff that needed this training, that this new rollout would affect everyone. 7/19 was chaotic because the print margins were reset on many computers to enable shrink to fit with this update, which was not selected before. All of our forms were printing miniaturized until this was figured out. Formatting changes made prior reports read as garbled nonsense. Diagnosis codes were taken away from an area we reference on a daily basis. Instead of going to the chart and clicking on something we want to print (two clicks), it now takes at least 5 clicks (Chart>Visits>Date>Double Arrow>Full Encounter>Print). Half of the time, this does not even print and I have to open up Google Chrome to which it prints a few words and the top two lines of the dictation on page one and the rest of the dictation is on page two. Instead of being able to print 1 page (old facesheet) that has the demographics, insurance, and upcoming appt. on it for our facilities to load our patients into their system for injections, it is no longer an option. When you try to print similar page, the text overlaps and prints on top of each other. Summary: many useful features removed.

Recommendations to other buyers: Suggestion would be that a live representative come and train when doing a software release of this magnitude. While this type of rollout may work well for a large facility-type setting where the company has a trainer employed in their company, it does not work out so well for small, physician owned practices and the account manager should be able to distinguish between which companies do not need a physical trainer on site and those companies like us who would benefit largely from that.

Pros: The ability to carry a note forward and adjust it.

Cons: How the note transfers to the letter to other physicians. It does not read well.

Overall: It took about a year of seeing patients before it became less time consuming. Now I can write notes fairly quickly and it is nice to have everything to carry forward from the last exam.

Pros: nothing really at this point it is harder to move around. The information needed is not all right there in one spot as it was before. It is even more time consuming to do my job.

Cons: System is slow, have to go or push to many buttons to get one job completed.

Overall: In training for my position there was not much to go on so basically had to train myself and get assistance from co-workers. When I did call Athena to get help I was told incorrect information then by the end of the day figured it out on my own.

Pros: Great chart - the medical record portion is outstanding. Being able to have everything in one place and minimal time wasted on medical records requests.

Cons: As I stated previously, the billing portion of the software is every biller's nightmare. The coding and reimbursement portion is not truly in our control as Athena can make changes on claims as they deem necessar. Also there are many claims the payer states are paid or have been paid and the money is not found anywhere. Too many unpostable issues, to many missing eobs, too many tiers of support - very unsatisfied with this part of the program. Having to correct posting of Athena posted payments makes double work. Also having to post payments or adjustments where things are adjusted off to global incorrectly is also double work

Overall: Been on Athena approximately 18 months now. The transition was difficult as we are a very busy practice but it gets better daily. The financial side is a whole other situation - speaking as a coder/biller this program can be a nightmare.

Recommendations to other buyers: My opinion is to stay with Athena for medical record portion and do billing/coding in house.

Pros: It is a new system and once we get to use it more we will be able to see the strengths and weakness of the system.

Cons: We were not told of the features that were being removed. I understand we must adapt to change. I 'm curious which practices you interviewed to determine that certain features were no longer needed so you deleted them with the new upgrade. I don't feel that my staff learned the information they need through the tutorials.

Overall: The new upgrade has completed. We have several employee s who only have half of the new streamlined system. There are some of us who only have the new version and some who only have the old version. I believe Athena should of worked out all the issues before going live.

Recommendations to other buyers: Still new software so we are not familiar enough to give any advice on the software. However, it may be beneficial to reach out to your companies that use your product before upgrading so you know how the upgrade will benefit your clients. I'm not sure all the changes are beneficial to our practice.

Pros: Athenaclinicals has made Meaningful Use a manageable task by providing us with resources such as a checklist, status list and recommendations to meet Meaningful Use. Also they stay informed about the latest regulations and changes so that we can focus more on treating our patients and managing our practice.
The billing functionality has definitely helped improve our A/R as well as assist us in tracking encounters to ensure we bill everything our providers do.
Their credentialing functionality has also been helpful in assisting with enrollment and credentialing verification.
The EMR and charting functionality is very comparable to other available software.

Cons: The biggest issue we have run into in the past year is with regards to customer service. Athena has changed the way they handle issues that cannot be resolved by your initial CSC call. The only way to "speak to" or contact the people working on your issue is via Athena email. Unfortunately, this leads to miscommunication, confusion, frustration and delays in resolution.
Completing certain tasks are more cumbersome than necessary, at least based on the opinions of our providers and staff. They feel they have to click more "buttons" and complete more "steps" to get to their end result eg. check-in, processing documents, charting.
Athena has so many different features and functionality that it is difficult to make sure you are utilizing the software to it's fullest capabilities for your practice and specialty.

Overall: Our practice has been using Athena for our practice management software for over 10 years and we implemented the Athenaclinicals EMR in 09/2012.

Pros: Billing is easy for us. I like the reminder call service. Entering a patient is easy as well

Cons: I definitely wish there was a better training for the templates. I struggle with 19 templates to extend our schedule quarterly and wish I could get assistance with a faster way to do this. We have 3 doctors and they come and go. This makes my job difficult.

Overall: The Athena reminder call service saves our employees time to care for our patient's in the office and not leaving messages all day on a recording. Especially with multiple doctors in the office now. Thank you Athena Health for your top notch service.

Recommendations to other buyers: The O help is good, however, it would be nice to have interactive training videos.

Pros: smart lists that know what orders might go with what diagnoses
ability to remind patients of next appointments, vaccines, etc.
ease of creating reports about anything
integration of Portal with EMR

Cons: no "office view". This is the single most frustrating part about Athena. In our old EMR, I could easily see what patients were in what room waiting for one doctor in the office all at once. THat's not possible with Athena, and without that, I will never feel completely happy with the system.

I also hate how difficult it is to quickly look at recent visits, because the "Visits" tab includes phone calls, and other "encounters" that aren't the same as visits.

The new streamlined version makes taking care of quality parameters impossible because of the time involved to click and wait on each one. (In the previous version, I could click on everything that was satisfied outside of Athena and then save it at once). Now I just ignore that tab due to time.

Overall: Had a previous EMR from 2008-2014 that was much more pediatric-specific and pediatric-friendly. Had to make a switch when Meaningful Use happened, and Athena seemed the best of the options. It is not nearly as peds-friendly, and there is MUCH more clicking every day, every hour, every encounter. Whereas moving from paper to EMR originally sped up my work, moving from our first EMR to Athena did not speed things up and seems overall to slow things down in fact.

Cons: Not the most resourceful tool for an Occupational system of work.

Pros: The ease of creating claims and being submitted daily to payers. Updates are managed by Athena. Encounter documentation is easy for staff to complete.

Cons: Difficulty in reviewing patient accounts and not having the ability to see a patient's ledger in an easily readable format. Reporting limitations and inability to do customizations and unable to require data to be completed in encounter notes. Appointment scheduling is cumbersome and defining staff schedules is very difficult to create and maintain. Inability for Athena to appropriately and easily manage our enhanced behavioral health services. Even though encounter documentation is easy for staff to complete, on the flip side that affects the quality of the documentation entered.

Overall: Athena staff do not understand our business as we are heavy in behavioral services and provide fewer primary care services. Posting staff just write off services for invalid reasons as they don't understand behavioral services. Even staff that we have been assigned as our account managers do not communicate very well. We were told originally that we would have monthly calls and that never happened either.

Recommendations to other buyers: Anyone considering this software should really investigate and get references prior to signing up and make sure that Athena staff understand your business procedures. Staff training was minimal on the functionality prior to "go live" and we had to really push to even get someone to come on site when we went "live" on the product.

When I'm in the HPI, I need to be able to see or toggle back and forth from medications/procedures/ the physicians last note to see what was done at the pt's last appt.

Pros: Prepayment collections features, canned reports

Cons: Ability for on-the-fly insurance payer adds, clunky report building when outside of the canned reporting

Overall: Our practice utilized the Athena Health PM system for approximately 7 years. We had a partial outsource agreement with them for our AR, payment posting and billing, and our team handled denials. Their customer support was great to provide one call resolution where possible. We did run into some issues with our payers with regard to their out-sourced team, but we were able to work through those. I would have preferred to have a dedicated team that we were able to contact, and have familiarity with our account managers, but they just have blanket customer service. The only reason our practice left was because we wanted one integrated product between our PM and EHR. At the time we had Athena for our PM and another software vendor as our EHR. For physician appeal, we went forward with the PM program that matched our EHR.

Pros: I like that the flow of my day is pretty well maintained b/c of athenanet, it's pretty easy to follow since the last big update

Cons: There's TOO much info sometimes and is very repetitive; if I could label things myself like we do on our regular computers and not be forced to put things in specific spots. I don't like if I have a case open, you personally have to make sure to check on it otherwise they say basically "if we don't hear from you in 5 days, we assume it's good and close the issue"- why isn't there an alert system when you've responded? AND don't put it in the news/messages b/c NOBODY checks that, it's a waste of space basically and adds additional task of checking for nonsense b/c we communicate already through the chart via the yellow alerts or in a case or in the instant messaging

Too many steps/repetitive, once the dr reviews labs, she can put it in our box and then I will call the pt and then once I close it, let it be closed.. why would it go to the Notify box now? I've already notified the pt... Why when we print labs from the exam does it go to staff inbox, clearly we've printed it so now I just waste 5 seconds opening it up just to close out of it....

Overall: Athenanet is okay, I was able to learn it quickly but I still get frustrated with some things; it's not my preferred EMR system but it's not the worst either; I like that there's Athena-people that help the business but sometimes I think they're lazy and don't follow-up with a lot; if you're going to help, HELP, don't just leave things undone and be like, "oops I tried but not my problem" basically...

Pros: Reporting out of Athena is very nice as you can run ad hoc reports and easily put into EXCEL and quickly put together a pivot table. Much nicer than our old antiquated system!

Cons: I generally like the software, my only concerns are with the co-source/customer service. Generally, turn around times on tickets are much longer than I prefer. When I have an issue, I would like a resolution within 2 days MAX especially for simple fixes. Before we had the co-sourcing model, we would have fixed issue right then without all of the wait!

Overall: The software and reporting are from Athena are nice but more improvements to the co-sourcing model would make it better!

Recommendations to other buyers: The Anodyne (Athena Clarity) reporting platform needs to be expanded to export all metrics available. Currently certain calculations are not available for download and we have to manually key these items. I would be extremely useful in reporting if we could export these items into EXCEL.

Cons: THE APPT SCHEDULING SHOULD BE MORE SPECIFIC TO EACH PRACTICE

Pros: Nothing

Cons: The software that checks insurance eligibility is not always correct.

Overall: From a billing perspective, I would not recommend this system. I do not like the billing set up in this system. The billing dept. at Athena does not seem to be very educated with billing/payment guidelines. I repeatedly find errors made by Athena billing dept. that is too numerous to even call and report to Athena, I just fix it on my end. This system has created extra work for the billing department instead of eliminating work for our billing department. I would not recommend this system to any office. The only good thing I can say about this system is that the customer support is helpful, but sometimes there is a long wait to speak with anyone in this department .

Recommendations to other buyers: No. Our office is very disappointed with this system.

Pros: What we were told prior to signing lease .

Cons: Athena billers, did not know what they were doing and our Certified Billers found many mistakes on Athena's side by the time we had to write up slips go through management, filing time expired, seemed things never resolved and we would find another problem. Lost hours of daily time, money and frustration . Athena wrote off charges that denied.

Overall: Employees walked out!!! 30 years in medical field, never in my life did I experience such disaster. Got rid of Athena after 1 yr. contract. Lost lots money.

Pros: The new streamlined Athenaclinicals is mostly better. It is easier to navigate, once you suss out the architecture of the product.

Cons: Some things are too streamlined, to where you have to hunt for basic things that have been taken off the main feature. And.....
IT HAS BECOME SLOW AGAIN, AND I MEAN SLOW!!!!

Overall: It has nice features, and after the April upgrade, it ran very fast. But, after the May update, it slowed down again. The slowness has cost us up to 10 minutes per visit.

Recommendations to other buyers: I wonder, frankly, if the product is subjected to thorough beta testing. I have participated in some of your betas, but perhaps you need to be more aggressive about beta testing before release.

Pros: It's user friendly. It is easy to tell who has access a pt account when that is necessary. Everything is time stamped. It is easy to do in house billing and follow up. There are many safe guard in place to prevent errors. The technical support personnel are very helpful and willing to find a solution to what ever question you have. I have never felt like a burden when calling for help navigating through the system. They always seem to be eager to assist me. Athena is always updating the software to make it even better.

Cons: The first couple days after an update the system seems to run slow. We are unable to use the same email on different accounts with out linking the family together.

Overall: This is by far the best medical software that I have used. It is very user friendly. I have used this software program with another practice over 6yr ago and it was great then and it has improved over the years. I really feel that anyone who tries Athena will not be disappointed.

Recommendations to other buyers: I am sure that upon trying this software you will be most satisfied. Keep in mind that Athena has provided training and technical support to help learn the software. Technical support is always available to help answer questions and navigate you through the system. Athena has also made available many links within the system to help you navigate through the system.

Overall: I have been using this program for about 4 years now. I was nervous at the beginning, because I thought I would be overwhelmed with it, but I wasn't! I have used a few different medical programs and Athena is by far the easiest to use. Also the layout is perfect for busy workflows. We are a busy office and all the features it provides, helps us to be as productive as we can. The only issue that really sticks out is that it sometimes can run slow and sometimes things get scanned into the chart from the fax in a weird way. Overall, I do believe this is a good quality product for a medical group.

Comments: I have been using athena since August 2013. The classic was very easy to use and I became very efficient with it. It was simple and easy to access information. Athena Streamline is an abomination. It increases the amount of time it takes to do notes. Takes much longer to review prior notes. I have been nauseous since I switched from all the screen moving and roll out screens. I just want my classic back

Comments: Athena Classic worked quite well and served all the functions we need at a large multi-disciplinary private practice (over 100 providers). However Streamline has changed the EMR into an opaque, cumbersome product. It's very difficult to find information in the chart and dramatically increases the number of clicks to navigate. We are getting no response from the company with our feedback.

Comments: DO NOT use Athena Clinicals. i have been using it for 6 years and finally got it the way it was the most streamlined for me to use. great practice flow. then Athena "streamlined" it. it is now the WORST EMR i have ever had to use. the support service treats me like i am an idiot. they blame internet explorer for errors. if you tell them you use google chrome, they will blame google chrome for errors. i spent months trying to explain multiple issues to them a couple years ago. their consistent answer was, "we can't reproduce that." then they would add, no one else seems to be having that issue. finally, they miraculously found there was a problem. i had explained to them that i started teaching computer programming when i was 16, and way before most of their tech staff were born in the 1970s. but they still treated me as if i had no idea how to use a computer, when in fact, they were the ones that had no idea how to listen and actually hear what the problems are.
since streamlining customer service has gotten worse. it seems they are now in the dark as well.
PLEASE, take my advice, there are lots of other cloud EMRs out there. try e clinical works; or anything else. unless you really like beating your head against a wall

Comments: Streamline is horrible There is no way to get a overview of patient via problem lists, call, or cases. Good luck finding documents without multiple clicks.
It crashes at least 7'times a day which they blame on Microsoft which it did not before
The customer service is a joke, their solutions to the issues do not work and they call you back 5 days after they "escalate " your service request. When you call in you are waiting on service response and each time it is like Groundhog Day as they have "closed your case" without resolving the issues. I guess their stats look better that way.

Comments: As the 3rd reviewer of "Athena Streamline", I wholeheartedly agree with the previous 2 reviewers.

As a user of Classic version Athenahealth over the past 7 years, I was very happy with the product. I had it tweaked to EXACTLY how I wanted it and it was working well. I could not be happier until.... "Athena Streamline."

Since "Athena Streamline" was shoved down my throat in April 2016 without my consent, my staff has suffered, my patients have suffered, and my practice has suffered.

With "Streamline", it now takes me twice the amount of mouse clicks to get anywhere. As a result, workflow efficiency has declined, productivity has declined, patient satisfaction has declined, and last but not least, satisfaction with the Athena brand is at an all time low.

It is a horrible exercise in frustration to communicate concerns to Athena. Make complaints on their client forums and they remove your posts and censor you.

I honestly believe that Athena has been negligent in their handling of Streamline. They have a financial responsibility to their clients. Forcing it upon their client without consent is irresponsible. Ignoring client concerns and censoring any client complaint is oppressive. Disregarding the harm they have done to their client and continuing to subject them to undue physical, emotional, and financial stress is just wrong.

If we did this to our patients, we'd be sued for negligence.

Comments: Classic version Athenahealth was great. Everything you need with little effort. Why go backwards to an older type EMR "Streamline" where you have to open multiple screens before you can see or make any decisions. What a waste. It locks up all computers, apple, windows on regular basis, at least once per 30-60mins. The CEO should be fired. We will have to switch soon unless they allow the use of Classic version.

Comments: We have used Athena Health since 2010. We use their EMR, Collector and Communicator products. We had been pleased for 6 full years until last week...

Athena changed their EMR software functionality to a new software platform. It is complicated, inferior and not user friendly. It is awful. We depend on functionality of a EMR to help us move quickly through charts. In the past we could open several windows and use multiple monitors to work on different charts at once. Another great functionality of the past was the "mini charts" which gave you a quick look into a chart without going through the entire document...not available anymore. Why?

Athena has basically copied AllScripts. Maybe they are hoping to be bought out from them and they are switching to their platform...no idea...but may be a good guess. Maybe there is a merger along the way.

We have complained...nobody with executive authorities has called us. I wish Mr. J. Bush would call us and explain how this new streamline is actually better than the one before... there is no way he knows what we do as an Internal Medicine office everyday. The Athena of old was superb, the new Streamline product they rolled out this week is awful.

Here is what you should know. If you purchased a cloud base product, the company should not be making changes that are drastic enough to impact your employee's hour. Your payroll must be respected. This is not the case with Athena. They don't care and have you locked up in a contract and there isn't anything you can do about it. This is almost a behavior of Anti-Physicians.

We never requested this change. We have to pay extra hours for our staff to get acquainted with the new system. Athena isn't paying for this.

Also, we have recommended this software to several affiliate physicians and they have signed on...we are owed credit for the incentives and we have to run after our money...been going on for several months now.

Compare this product to AllScript and find the cheapest service. If you don't like AllScript, then find a new EMR system that has been developed by Physicians, not some young IT with no medical (Clinical Office that is) experience.

In the world of software, consumers are given the choice to update their software or not. This should not be any different. I think most people want to update any software system when they are given the reasons why they should...and they agree that it will help them.

Comments: We originally started with Athena because the meaningful use functionality was built in. Also since it is cloud based there is no weekend staff time setting up every update. Since starting with Athena, we have achieved meaningful use every year and we hardly notice when there is an update. The help line is set up to direct you to a specialist according to the page you are working on. It never takes more than a couple of minutes to speak with someone knowlegeble. All EMR's seem to be cumbersome with all of the necessary info but I am now doing the same work and bringing in more income and taking less time to get paid.

Comments: The Athena team helped us customize our EMR to the needs of the practice. We created templates that were similar to our sick and well sheets that made go live much easier. It did take some getting used to, but, after 2 days we were at full schedules. The system is very user friendly. Like any new program it takes practice and getting used to. Unlike other stories, our revenue actually went up due to reduction in employees. After 8 months our staff was down by 25%. That is a significant decrease from 40 people. All our faxes are routed to Boston and placed directly into the patients chart saving my staff the headache. Referrals and chart export are all electronic driven. Our only regret is not doing years ago. My physicians now can look up patients at home, on their phone, at work and on their ipads. They have access anywhere they have internet. Athena┬┐s customer service department is always willing to help me change a template or create a new one. The knowledge and support is the best in the industry. We began running much cleaner and efficiently on Athena clinicals. I really have no idea why a practice would go with anyone else. Hands down they are the best!

Comments: We have been using athena at our 8 physician 2 state practice for 8 years now. We have never looked back. We have never thought about switching. Our income has increased, our productivity has not decreased. athenahealth has fantastic customer service, we see our relationship with the people at athena as a partnership. athena has a vested interest in physicians being happy, productive, and successful, so the company is always working hard to make sure this happens.
They are on top of all changes in healthcare long before other companies even think about them. Perhaps this is why 97% of physicians who choose athena stay with athena.
Cons: People think it is the "Cadillac" of EHRs- but we have never found the costs to be prohibitive and we have done extremely well financially ever since we signed on
Pros: Brilliant people working WITH physicians constantly striving to advance the electronic healthcare world. There are no "extra" fees- ever! Easy to use- residents and NP students pick up the computer and learn the system in minutes. It is that easy! All updates are done monthly and everyone on the system is on the SAME version of the system at the same time. Incredible transparency into financials at the click of a button in seconds. Comments: Have been with Athena for 7 years. As with any EHR, there is a required investment in time, and flexibility of your practice is a must. Once providers understand the power of the tool, workflows become simplified in the ever-changing world of healthcare. Updates remain a constant. The reporting is by far the best in the industry, providing group, individual, organization and patient data at the touch of the fingertips.

The challenges are keeping up with its changes, and understanding the fact that individuals cannot re-write entire formatting programs to specifically fit into each individual box. Having an HIM person within your company to monitor this could be your best investment initially. Customer service is good, but the intricacies required are sometimes time-challenging.

Comments: I'm board certified in Family medicine and additionally boarded in Geriatrics and Aesthetics with 30 years of practice behind me. Never wanted to go to an EHR from paper but reviewed the options and went with Athena Clinicals. Absolutely love it and have incorporated my clinical brain into the software such that I can see the most complex geriatric cases almost as efficiently as I can see a sore throat. Very intuitive in its use and at least for an solo practicing physician extremely adaptable to all practice situations. Excellent community and company support. Really no negatives from my perspective. Highly recommend you give Athena a very close look before deciding to go elsewhere. Web based, No IT, can change rapidly to accommodate system/government changes, excellent ICD 10 transition format and training, tremendous MU success and support. No brainer here for me. Leaving a 15 year professional relationship because they wanted me to leave Athena Clinicals for another "standard" EMR. Allowed me to go independent without ANY concerns going forward. I welcome questions or concerns.

My work load tripled. I worked on Athena tasks at home in my free time. The training went on for months. My income dropped substantially. I had to hire additional staff to deal with Athena tasks. The part in the advertising where it says that it will take care of things so that the doctor can focus on patients? A complete lie. I have so much unrecoverable income now that I have to close my office.

Pros:
The beauty of athenaClinicals is that there is only one version of athenaClinicals, and that is the updated version. They update for us and it is constantly being updated. The great thing about athena is that you don't "buy" it, you are basically a subscriber and they do all the updates, all the back office work for you.

The implementation process went beautifully, we worked really hard to get it right at the start so we (purposefully) overtrained ourselves. We have never looked back.
athenaClinicals is easy to use, quite intuitive and very flexible. Many different physicians can use the system in their own way.
The customer support is wonderful-the people who answer are calls are knowledgeable and follow up. We work with athena as as partners. We are doing very well financially and have enhanced our bottom line through efficiencies and through charge capture. We are not coding higher. We know that because athena has amazing report writing and data mining capabilities.

Cons: Athena is a monthly expense and not cheap, but we feel we get more than our money's worth .
Financially we are doing very well as a matter of fact, we have never done better

Overall: This is a great company with amazingly smart people working with us everyday to make our lives easier at work. I cannot imagine choosing any other company, and I did a ton of research and due diligence. Athena is a company which sees the future and takes us there with them. We all love the products and the company. You will too!
