Pros
Portfolio construction is art and science. In practice it boils down to
- having a good set of tools that incorporate most recent estimation and optimization algorithms and
- ease of use that support an artful use of the above.
SmartFolio is a gem that has both.
Smartfolio is state of arts. Competition stresses older algorithms that lack robustness and put together in a rigid fashion. SmartFolio offers advanced estimation logic that handle uneven data, hidden factors, and shrinkage toward reasonable targets. It can incorporate implied parameters (Black-Litterman). It has good optimization procedures and supports reasonable constrains.
SmartFolio gives ample opportunity to inspect intermediate details, correct assumptions and gain understanding of how assumptions impact final portfolios.
Portfolio construction is not a trivial exercise. Manual reflects that in a useful instructive manner. It is not advisable to approach portfolio construction naively.
Cons
Excel as a base has its plusses and minuses.
Overall
Overall, SmartFolio is one of the best choices for a small to mid-size shop.

Cons
This program does what it is suppose to do. I hope Modern Investment Technology will continue to make it even better and more advanced in the future.
The only con I have is that the automatically data downloaded from yahoo-finance is not reliable as a source. The user need to use some time with management of the data. Once the input-data is prepared, Smartfolio is a state-of-the art program, satisfying all my needs.
Overall
Smartfolio is the best asset allocator software available. The software is under-priced, and deliver high value for the money.
In order to use all the methods, and understand them, a theoretical background is necessary. But since the software is so easy to use, also private individuals will be able to understand and use this tool.
The risk management tools are also updated with the latest and advanced methods.
As an advisor it's important to know the clients investment goals and horizon, and his risk-tolerance level. Smartfolio is probably the best tool available for advisors, asset allocators, and risk managers.

I don't think you'll find a better portfolio management package out there at almost any price other than the priciest institutional platforms and the only difference between this and those is order routing. Fantastic piece of software.
