Pros: Easy to use and you can use it from anywhere you have an internet connection.

Cons: I cannot reconcile my own accounts because I could not figure out how to export everything into Quickbooks and make it work.

Overall: We went from PCLaw to Clio because our office was growing and we wanted a cloud-based software program. We wanted to be able to work from anywhere we had internet access. Clio has met all of our needs except one. I really liked being able to balance my operating and trust accounts in PCLaw. Clio does not provide for reconciliation. It is compatible with other accounting software like Quickbooks, but I found it difficult to do the exporting and have everything match up with invoicing being done in Clio not in Quickbooks. I ended up turning over my accounting side of things to my accountant. They match up my bank statements with my account activity in Clio and let me know if anything got posted wrong in Clio. I am sure, however, that those who are more computer savvy than I would be able to make it work.

Comments: Clio is the best practice management program/software I've used in my 15 years of practice. I love being able to sync other programs with Clio for ease and efficiency as well as access all my case info on the go using their app on my phone or tablet. Can't wait to see who they join forces with next! When I have questions, their customer support team is phenomenal and their webinars are very helpful and informative.

Pros: It's online.
The timer can be stopped and started easily.

Cons: I spend about two (2) hours a day implementing workarounds to make the system work because it was not built for family law practice or file review. It's a good backup system but it's nothing very reliable unless you're willing to invest the time into making it work.

Overall: If you're not used to a system, this can be made into a good system for you. There are a lot of functions missing--like being able to track time associated with flat fee activities (so you can't track productivity or if you do, you can't print out your billable hours without some discussion to the ethics board). You can track e-mails and phone calls, but not faxes, letters, or text messages. You can set tasks for others that you can update, but the update doesn't get sent to the other person. You can set pop-ups on your calendar for yourself, but not for other people. You can track the budget of a case, but not the running total of transactions or expenses. You can integrate with Quickbooks, but you have to import and export the information--the information does not flow freely between the two. The calendar has all of the same pitfalls as Google Calendar because it is Google calendar but with some functions missing. You can upload and download documents, and you must do that in order to save any changes with Clio (unless you pay for HIPAA-compliant Google Drive Professional). Your receptionist has to separately capture phone messages from your client to you because only you can have conversations. Wandering between the conversations page and the logs page means that you will always end up back in the Matters tab. If you're trying to capture a phone call with a person not in the system you have to exit the phone call and lose all of the information to enter that person before you can save the conversation to a file. It's not customizeable. There are some pros over Amicus but many features I miss (such as being able to track time directly with the phone call, including the time the call was initiated) but it has good parts about it. If you're into nitty-gritty capturing of information and you have the time to invest it can be a good platform but trying to teach established attorneys how to rework their legal practice around it is difficult.

Recommendations to other buyers: Think about how you use your legal practice--if you couldn't go online today, this is not going to make you online tomorrow. You have to completely rework how you do things because of the amount of upload/download, import/export time that you do. This is NOT an all-in-one system and it CANNOT all be done online at this time. The next updates were pushed back until September so I don't know what will be resolved between now and then.

Hey Ashley, This is all fantastic feedback and definitely provides some valuable insight into areas we can improve in order to make Clio work better for all attorneys out of the box. Any chance we could get you on a call with our product team so that they can hear your suggestions? - Derek, Clio Community Manager

Comments: I came into our firm as they were converting to CLIO. I was new to time and billing systems and I was up and running on the system with no training in no time at all - I admit there were are few dozen calls to support which were always handled quickly and efficiently by people who know their product and have a genuine desire to help you be successful with CLIO. It is intuitive and easy to use. It lacks some functionality that would make the accounting processes and reporting much better. They have a system of adding feature requests and then when customers call in and request the same feature, their "vote" is added to the existing request - so more votes, more attention. I absolutely love working with their support team. They are the best support team that I have ever worked with in my ____ many years in the working world!

Cons: I cannot think of anything.

Overall: Clio has truly transformed my practice from when I adapted it in 2010. It has freed up my time to be able to practice law and expand my business. One of the things I love the most is that I am able to have my client files, time log, billing etc always at my finger tips. I can work on my client files no matter where I am whether it be on vacation, or on an international business trip.

Thank you for providing such a great product.

Pros: Web based program and cost.

Cons: Rigid, time consuming process. So many things don't work and the process of finding a work around is cumbersome.

Overall: I have been using this since 2012 - at first it fit my needs and was marketed for the solo/small practice firms. It has increasingly become more cumbersome and takes longer to calendar and bill than I would like. The interest feature on the billing can only calculate simple interest. Once you enter the interest formula, there is no way to disconnect it so you are left to manually delete all of the entries. They have changed the billing process from a process that once took about an hour to taking about 3 hours. A bill is generated and placed under the Draft tab, you can view it, edit it, submit it for approval (a waste of time for a solo), or approve it - so I view it, see it needs to be edited, and click on edit, the bill comes up for editing, then once you've completed it, you hit Approve - and nothing happens which is new - you either can hit the go to bills Awaiting Payment link, or click on the Awaiting payment screen -- from there, you are forced to sort through all of your accounts receivable to find your newly edited bill. Once you find the bill, then you can Receive Payment from the trust account - but be careful since if your client has $500 in trust and the bill is $1000, the trust payment will pop up $1000, which you know is inaccurate, so you have to do another edit. Then the bill drops out of view and you either have to return to Awaiting Payment or Paid tabs - search through all of the other bills, find your bill, then you can download it - print it, or save it, and then email it.
If you want to enter a new appointment, you can do so on the calendar, but if you want to create a method to track the new client, you have to go to another tab to set up a matter, you can only input the client's name, not the address, not the phone number, not any other stuff that should appear at this point, in my opinion. Then you add in your number. Then you have to track down the name you just entered and try and add in addresses, phone numbers, email addresses. The process is incredibly time consuming.

Pros: Cost
Cons: Overly rigid, designed for those who have a data processor employee, time consuming, not customer service oriented - was marketed for solos/small practices and this is not the case any longer.

Recommendations to other buyers: There has to be something better. Clio started out well but now is trying to be too many things for too many practices. For example, there is a whole process for the type of currency you are accepting - great if you are an international firm, cumbersome if you aren't. Can't compound interest. Not lean and streamlined like I would expect by now for being on the market for so many years.

Comments: Clio provides most of the features a small law firm needs. It is beautifully intuitive. However, the new tiered pricing puts some of the most important features into the higher tiers and out of reach of small firms and solos. Additionally, Clio puts features that should go together, like custom fields and document automation, into different tiers. Most cloud options offer one-size-fits-all pricing. That may be a good thing.

Pros: Ease of use

Cons: Lack of customization available

Overall: Clio is a great product! I love that when I have a problem or a suggestion, the customer service representatives are eager to help. The only problem I really have with Clio is the lack of customizing it to fit your firm. My attorney asks me for specific reports, but Clio does not offer them. I'd love for there to be a way to create your own reports (i.e., list of Expert Witness and their Tax ID numbers; how much money TOTAL we have invested in our contingency-fee based clients; list of declined cases; etc.) It would also be nice to be able to move the fields around on the screens to flow better. Clio helps me keep clients information organized, which I absolutely love. Unfortunately, I don't get to use it to its fullest capabilities because my attorney has no interest in doing so.

Pros: Configurable and stable. Includes a payment portal which is convenient. Accepts multiple documents into its server for storage. The help desk is the best I have encountered.

Cons: Slower than I would like. Too rigid in many of the areas. The printed bill is not carefully controlled and the headings of a table are often printed on the bottom of a page and the data - without a column descriptor - gets printed on the next page.

Overall: Overall the platform is good. It manages contacts and cases, maintains a calendar and tasks list. It will do document assembly. It appears to be geared for medium size firms. For solo practitioners, the platform works but is not as friendly. The billing system is comprehensive to the point of being complex for a solo. The printing of bills leaves a lot to be desired. Often it will print a bill with the table headers (labels) on the bottom of one page and the data unlabeled on the next page - looking very sloppy and unprofessional. The developers know of the problem but will not fix it - saying just go into the particular bill and adjust it. Which - although possible - defeats the whole purpose of automation.

Pros: The reasonable price, the customizable templates, the ease of use, and the simplified yet robust invoicing and billing functionality.

Cons: While there are not many downfalls with Clio, we would recommend utilizing an additional system for calendaring and contact resource management. As our firm is a true relationship focused and cross-referral based practice, we have found that keeping track of relationships amongst all contacts is paramount. As such, we utilize a separate calendaring and CRM system.

Overall: Our law firm has been utilizing Clio as our practice management system for over six years. It is hands down the best practice management system on the market today. It builds immense value, streamlining, efficiency, and organization to our business. From customizable document templates, to unlimited cloud-based document storage¿Clio is a one-stop shop that covers all bases.

It is a definite value add, is extraordinarily easy to use and customize, and we couldn't run our practice without it.

If you have considered switching to a new practice management system, we highly recommend Clio!

Additionally, the customer support team is incredibly helpful, and can help you find solutions to any problems that may arise while implementing and using Clio.

Recommendations to other buyers: Clio is truly impressive and a real one-stop shop for law Firm practice management. The value it adds to your law Firm is immense, and Clio falls in at a price point lower than almost all of it's competitors. For our law firm, choosing Clio is really a no-brainer.

Pros: Calendaring, timekeeping, and invoicing.

Cons: The apps for my phone and iPad are not reliable.

Overall: We are a small criminal defense firm in Texas and have been using Clio for several years. Presently, we have access for almost every member of our firm and each of us use Clio multiple times daily. The calendaring system, timekeeping, and invoice process have proven invaluable. We also use Clio to store documents such as offense reports, probable cause statements, notes, correspondence, etc. We are on our way to becoming a paperless office using Clio. I can access all of my files from any computer. We have been a little concerned about the accuracy of the app for our phones and iPads. Some of our attorneys have stopped using it. Every morning before court, I print out a copy of the day's agenda and bring it with me to court. Overall, I can unreservedly recommend Clio. It has been a huge boon to my firm and it has helped us grow enormously in the past few years.

Recommendations to other buyers: We tried to merge quickbooks with Clio once and it was a disaster. We'd like to try again, but don't want to go through the same experience we endured before. It really was a mess.

Pros: Accessibility and ease of use

Cons: Would like better reporting. My clients do not like to "sync" so the A/R reports do not provide what they need at a glance. I have to export to Excel and recap data so they understand it better. I would like more levels on permissions. Clients would like some people to enter/modify transactions and other members to just view. Right now you cannot view unless you enter and modify.

Overall: I have used Clio for 2 years now with multiple clients. Clio's accessibility and ease of use has provided us with flexibility and has allowed us to spend less time on administrative duties and more time on our clients. I highly recommend Clio.

When I started my firm, I tried at least 15 different solutions to figure out which came the closest to having all of the features I needed (ease of use, cloud-based, document and file management, email integration, third party app integration, invoicing and billing, customization options). Comments: Clio user for 4 years now. Overall, happy with the program. The billing component works very well and we've had no difficulties generating invoices for corporations or integrating with Client end third-party billing company software. Favorite feature is the G unify integration with our Vonage phone system. It captures all of our calls, and allows seamless entry of billing while at the same time capturing any notes from the call. Document generation, however, is not strong.

Couldn't be happier with Clio!

Comments: I have been a Clio user for two years - since I left the world of Biglaw to open my own solo practice. When I was in Biglaw, I was forced to use four independent software products to do what Clio allows me to do in a single, integrated product. It is very user friendly, and for the most part intuitive. Because Clio is cloud-based, users benefit from a continual flow of upgrades, improvements and enhancements. The quality of the learning resources have also improved a lot over the past two years. My only minor criticism would be - I think Clio could do a better job of promoting these learning aids to its users, as I sort of stumble upon them, usually when I was looking for something else. I cannot imagine practicing law without Clio. If you are looking for software to run your practice, look no further. I also appreciate Clio's deep and sincere interests in enhancing the success of its users. The annual Clio Cloud Conference is an extraordinary event that is not to be missed. Thank you, Clio.

Pros: That you can use it's API to sync it with other programs.

Cons: na

Overall: I have been a customer since 2009, and use it to keep track of everything in my firm. It is great for keeping track of tasks, contacts, matters, and the best thing is there's a number of additional apps made by third-party vendors that you can use. In my firm I use Clio In conjunction with Prima Facie, to manage my immigration forms and caseload and I like how these other apps sync with Clio so I don't have to enter my data multiple times. I also use Clio with Zapier In order to connect With many other apps that I use in my firm like slack, trello, and others.

Recommendations to other buyers: Explore the third party apps and the Zapier apps you can use too.

Comments: Our two lawyer, two paralegal law firm has been using CLIO for over two years and are very satisfied with this product. We are in two different locations so cloud-based practice management was a must. CLIO is remarkably stable - it has NEVER crashed. Can't say that for PC Law, the disastrous server-based platform that we used to use. Several support staff in the past, and our present staff, have all found it extremely easy to learn and to use. Customer service and tech support are superb. The document automation features are excellent. Current flaws are: the smartphone Apps need additional features, and the Lawpay integration is flawed. CLIO's tech support representatives have acknowledged these issues candidly and are working on solutions.

Pros: The ease of use. I can jump in, create a contact and a matter and be on my way

Cons: I've told Josh and Jack like 100000 times that they should buy Lexicata. You guys need a front facing design for clients with auto emails and e-signature

Overall: I signed up to Clio years ago and haven't looked back since. The simplest way to describe the cloud based company is that they just "get it." Quick billing? Check. Awesome customer support? Check. They really have what I need as a solo attorney (and nothing more, which is just as important).

Comments: In researching practice management software when opening our mainly-construction based law office 3 years ago, we decided to choose Clio based on reading product reviews and ease of use for new users. Now, 3 years later, we are pleased that Clio has been able to grow with our practice and expand easily to multiple users as we have hired additional attorneys and support staff. While we haven't yet chosen to take advantage of all of Clio's features, we have been pleased as we transition into using specific features based upon our needs. For instance, we utilized Clio Connect in order to send invoices to clients last month for the first time, and as a result, I am actually looking forward to this month's billing cycle as it seems much less daunting and time-consuming! We hope to continue to expand our use of features and Customer Service has been stellar in documenting my suggestions and experiences. We highly recommend Clio to attorneys who are beginning the self-employment journey just as we did 3 years ago.

Pros: Time tracking is very easy, and it handles multiple matters for the same client very well. Reports are useful, most of them. Tasks and the system allowing you to make records of phone conversations are great. Clio Connect and the ability to share documents with clients and others is fantastic.

Cons: Billing system is clunky; contacts management is only okay at best. It's not a cheap solution.

Overall: We've been using Clio for just over a year now in our firm. We've added several new people and consolidated a number of software programs into a much smaller number of programs. The contacts management and documents management features of Clio are not as robust as the other solutions we're using, and we'd like to see some improvements in the contacts system and the ways bills are run and sent. However, the time entry is MUCH easier now, it's overall fairly easy to learn the system and set up new users, and the ability to link contacts to matters is vastly helpful for our conflicts checking (assuming you use it).

Clio is not going to magically make your life better; you still have to learn to use it and then make sure it gets used correctly (we have some attorneys here who haven't been as good about that as the staff and some of the other attorneys have been), but it's so worth the effort. And, if you have a problem, their support staff is fantastic. Quick to respond, very helpful and polite, and if they have to tell you that the requested fix isn't available yet they'll at least assure you that it's being put on the list for future improvements.

We looked at a lot of practice management solutions, and I think we made the right choice in going with Clio.

Pros: How it keeps my files organized.

Cons: The little kinks and quirks the software has. For example, I have to upload documents in Microsoft Edge instead of my default browser Google Chrome.

Overall: I hung a shingle right out of law school in 2011. I practiced for a year without any type of real law practice management system or software. It was cumbersome and not very practical. I researched all the major law practice management programs and felt that Clio was the best choice. Now after employing it in my practice for the last few years, I know I can never give it up. Even when I do random comparisons to other up and coming LPMS, Clio's features and functionality blows them out of the water. I will continue to do business with Clio for as long as I am in solo practice.

Pros: That all my case material is all in one place.

Cons: Budgets are not as useable as I had hoped. And it's a Canadian company. And I pay American exchange rates. ¿¿¿¿

Overall: Notes, cases, appointments, budgets, contacts and billing. All in one area. Streamlines everything and makes work more efficient. I can now track my work and my teams work effectively.

Recommendations to other buyers: I looked at multiple options and trialed a few programs. CLIO had the best options for case management. I'm not a lawyer, but I do very similar work in terms of managing cases in the medical legal framework. It made managing cases and referrals much more manageable.

Pros: Flexibility, customization, integrations, and speed.

Cons: The calendar view options.

Overall: Clio speeds retrieving relevant case information, and its integrated payments for invoices is great. Clio is exponentially faster at creating invoices, and recording payments than any desktop based app I've used over the years. Clio is easy on the eyes.

Clio makes it easy to create custom fields that are relevant only to a selected practice area. Implementing those custom fields is intuitive, and there are built-in workflows to assign groups of custom fields to a practice area.

The only knocks I could offer is that the document automation doesn't allow merge fields into fillable PDF forms, and the calendar views are somewhat limited. However, it's easy to sync calendars with Google or Microsoft Office 365, which have better view options.

The iOS app is excellent.

Pros: Easy to use

Cons: The dashboard needs some work, it's not possible to customize how many days of the year you will work (so you can meet the goals you set) and it's currently not possible to track by revenue in the door, only by billed hours. Would love to have an integration available with project management software since tasks are just to do lists and to do lists don't work.

Overall: I have been using Clio for about a year now and absolutely love it. I used to use Abacus Law which was fine but frustrating. Clio is SO easy to use, I'm a lawyer, not an accountant, but it's easy to figure out what I'm supposed to do. Plus their customer service and on-boarding process are great. Any issues I've had I've been able to resolve quickly with the support team and the development team listens to feedback from users and implements it! Pretty awesome. I have small firm, it's just me. I travel all over the place and I love being able to log into Clio any time anywhere, even from my phone! I capture a lot more of my billable hours. And invoicing my clients in a SNAP. The third party integrations are outstanding, I love how it works with so many other products that I use. I've been able to stack a lot of things to make my firm seem like it's a lot bigger than it is. I <3 Clio! Get it, you will not be sorry.

Pros: Quick reference
Calendar
Time entry that auto generates bills
Task reminders

Cons: No spell check
Poor calendar feed sync - wait times are too long for appointments made in Clio to show up on iPhone
Contacts search - need more than just (Last Name, First Name) view because sometimes I cant remember clients last names.

Overall: There is no limit to the ability to quickly search a client matter in Clio or in the Clio app for iPhone. I see so many of my colleagues rummaging through files when having to make reference to a matter, and if their not rummaging through files - they just cant seem to remember what they need to at that moment because we are all so busy. At no time has Clio not provided my partner and I the ability to; on demand quickly search for any client, document, date, or information. Literally with a simple search function, we can search through every item in our Clio database that references our search query. We can share, print and email the information on demand also. Clio connects is another great way we keep communication open with our clients -we are transparent with billings, time allocation to matters and with what is going on. This goes a long way for us and our clients really appreciate it.

Recommendations to other buyers: Must have ability to set appointment in iPhone and have it immediately sync with Clio Calendar. Still working with 2 calendars - not fun.

Easy, Fast and Convenient, with a great mobile app, this tool will help you capture your time, communicate with clients and get paid... Faster and easier.

Recommendations to other buyers: Take the time to learn the tools, and get help migrating your data into Clio...

Comments: I did a substantial amount of research before opening my firm in 2012. All of my findings led me to start the practice with CLIO and never looked back. My business runs on a Google platform so it integrates seamlessly with our database, documents, calendar, and other business apps.

CLIO creates great metrics which are great for management purposes as well as forecasting. As the managing partner of the firm, I'm able to oversee what my firm generates as a whole and individually by each partner.

I'd have to say my favorite part of CLIO is the virtual access and being able to carry entire files wherever I go. No matter where I am or what I'm doing I can access, update, and modify files on the go. The efficiency boost is unmatched, and I feel less shackled to my office. I can work from home or from the beach as long as internet access is available. Most of the time I can work from smartphone or tablet.

Pros: Use of use.

Cons: Reports. It would be nice to have more filters options on some of the reports and the ability to alter the fields.

Overall: We have been using Clio since 2014. It gets better and better. Telephone customer support is the best I know of for an online service. They are quick to pick up and eager to help. They are very open to suggestions that might better their product. Clio keeps adding helpful features some we are using some we are considering. The cost is reasonable considering the value. Clio is easy to use but for the timid there are many easy to use quality webinars that clearly explain how Clio is best used available at no added charge. With the recent launch of the Advocate there is opportunity to confer with other Clio users in a meaningful and helpful way.

Recommendations to other buyers: Try it.

Pros: The ease of billing and organizing my matters.

Cons: I find some of the app integrations a little clunky or could be more streamlined. I am having trouble with Document Automation but I know I just need to spend more time figuring it out.

Overall: As a solo practitioner with no support staff, I can not imagine my life without Clio! Everything from organizing/storing documents to getting my billing out is a breeze. Ever year there are more app integrations that help me stream line my business and save me time. And the support staff at Clio are always available to help, even with some of my ridiculous questions. I highly recommend Clio to get any office running smoothly and to save you time!

Recommendations to other buyers: It would be great if I could sinc my google calendar with Clio.

Comments: I was introduced to Clio by another colleague because of the ease of use and I've been addicted to it ever since. Billing is simplified and my clients love the availability of having access to their own files as well. All of this is done securely and at an affordable price. Pros: Ease of use, fantastic customer support (including building of features based on client feedback), document automation and custom task lists.

Cons: Minimal reporting options and contact entry.

Overall: Clio offers a ton of features for a very, affordable price. No need for hefty servers or IT departments, simply utilize their unlimited document storage and secure client portal to easily store and share documents, invoices, etc. While a huge fan of cloud-based practice management, Clio earns high marks from me as one of the easiest to learn. Whether you use Clio for the basics or customize it to its fullest - Clio adds not only efficiency to your practice - it's like adding a staff member. Conflict checking, matter specific info at your fingertips, document automation and integrations with over 50 third-party apps means you can easily build Clio to meet your firm's specific needs. But just to prove I am a real person giving real feedback - I gave a 4 on the features and functionality section simply because there are minimal reporting features in Clio. Basic reports are available (Work in Progress, Productivity and Accounts Receivables) but for more intensive reporting options, additional work is required utilizing exporting options. I also don't love the current option for entering contacts, however, I simply connected my Clio account to a Google account and import my contacts from Google. Works like a dream and keeps me from doing tons of data entry when entering new contacts. Clio is well worth the money at any level! I always suggest at least the Boutique level (well worth the additional funds) and see lots of value in the Elite level (marketing/CRM module that will help you actually track what is working and what isn't)!

Recommendations to other buyers: Look through the integration partners. If you wish Clio did something it doesn't appear to do, chances are there's a 3rd party app for that!

Comments: I was skeptical that I needed practice management software because I have a relatively simple practice (few expenses, no employees). But using Clio has cut in half the amount of time I need to spend to get bills out each month and the document automation feature saves me time preparing letter formats and other documents that I don't bill for anyway because they're just administrative work. Plus, it's a much better way to manage the relationships between contacts and various matters rather than just running searches on my entire computer.

Pros: Ease of Use, Intuitive Nature, Customer Service

Cons: Limited customization

Overall: Our firm has been a Clio customer for four years. After much consideration and trials with other platforms, we chose Clio. The ease of use and the intuitive nature of Clio has made our practice much more efficient and streamlined. The absolute best part of Clio is their customer service. They are easy to get on the phone and always so helpful and pleasant. Our firm has attended two of the Clio conferences and was impressed with the speed in which the team adapted to customers' requests. This is truly a different type of company that thrives on innovation and making the practice of law more efficient and rewarding.

Recommendations to other buyers: I would like the ability to customize some features more easily.

Pros: The integrated suite of functions

Cons: 1) There are some known glitches that result from the cloud exchange of data that don't seem to be getting corrected.
2) The UI should be more customizable within the total Clio palette of functions and features. I'm very oriented towards being able to do everything with keystrokes as efficiently as possible, and Clio isn't there yet in its usability.
3) I'm growing increasingly concerned about my inability to access my data following a big natural disaster (such as the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake). Clio needs to offer a function that will allow lawyers to use Clio in "isolated/local only" mode (i.e., with no internet connection to the mothership) and then sync all the changes once the internet is restored. If I ever leave Clio it will be because of this concern. In the event of a big disaster recovery, I should be able to keep practicing as much as possible just like I am now, even if Clio and the Internet are not available.

Overall: Over five years ago, while still in my first year of solo practice (6 years after first bar admission), I tried another product advertised to work for Mac users and it was a nightmare, so I resolved to try Rocketmatter and Clio; for whatever reason, I found I preferred the look and feel of Clio, and have been with it since. It's the first program I open every day and the last program I shut down when I go home. I am a true solo with no staff support still, and am just now tip-toeing into hiring some staff support - Clio makes it easy for me to use remote support, work-from-home assistants, etc., which is great for keeping the overhead low and the ROI on it high.

Pros: You can do pretty much everything in Clio.

Cons: I'd like the clients in alphabetical order instead of the order they were entered in.

Overall: Clio is perfect for maintaining your client contact list, files, invoicing, etc. Clients can even pay their bill via Clio! I love that you can "share" sensitive documents with your client through Clio Connect and clients can upload you information as well. Other than a physical file cabinet, Clio is all you need to start and run your office.

Pros: Ease of use and integrations

Cons: Client portal and cumbersome to move documents between files.

Pros: It is very intuitive to use. You can be up and running right away. It helps me practice law by handling the administrative tasks with ease. The customer support is fantastic.

Cons: The only complaint I have is in the document creation, it can be tricky to request a number of documents to be generated at a time.

Overall: When I opened my solo office three years ago I needed a practice management software that I could begin using right then and would make practicing law more fun (without unnecessary administrative hassles). I choose Clio. One of my best legal choices ever. Clio supports my agile practice where my focus is on exceptional service to my clients. I could not have started and succeeding in my new solo practice without Clio.

Pros: Intuitive user interface. Logically built to support my practice.

Cons: I cannot think of a single thing.

Overall: I started using Clio the first day I started my firm. I worked in both big law and a medium size firm before I started my firm. Both firms took 30 to 45 days to send out a bill. With Clio, in my first month on my own, I processed 20 bills at the end of the last day of the month in less time than it took my staff to put address labels on the envelopes. My revenues have gone from $266,000 the first year to $409,000 the second year to what will be between $550,000 to $600,000 this year and from what I know from my pipeline of work, more than $1,000,000 next year. Clio and what I have learned from the Clio Cloud Conference my practice has grown in amazing ways. I now enjoy work more, have more free time to share with my family and the important pro bono work in the community.

Pros: It securely houses files, allows me to do billing effortlessly and get paid effortlessly, and integrates with the other major CRM and Accounting software we need.

Cons: It is not as intuitive as it could be; it is not easy to move files or re-assign time to different matters (when clients change their mind about which of their companies to bill); calendar function needs work.

Overall: Clio allows me to focus on marketing and running the firm in an efficient manner without worrying about file cabinet space, compliance with IOLTA accounting, sending bills and getting paid, etc. There are so many more aspects to a modern law firm with regard to technology, integrations and alternative fee structures that need to be addressed, that there would be no way to bring my firm into the 21st century without the help of a platform like Clio.

Recommendations to other buyers: It is well worth it, especially for smaller firms looking to become more efficient.

Pros: The support. Clio always responds proactively and with a friendly approach.

Cons: Because Clio is so responsive to users, they tend to add too many features for someone with little time sort out best practices.

Overall: I've used Clio since 2011. The team has been incredibly supportive and helpful. The product is great, mainly because the company has such a great relationship with users. I can't imagine how much time and money I've saved because of Clio. It's a lot. A whole, whole lot.

Recommendations to other buyers: Discover your slimmed-down version. Software that requires a bunch of consultants to work (Clio's not that bad yet) becomes too burdensome to be realistically helpful. Don't get overwhelmed with options. Use Clio in a way that works for you.

Pros: I love the simplicity and flexibility of Clio. It is very user friendly and the way it looks is very neat. It does not take long to work out exactly what you are looking at and what it all means. For me personally, I do a lot of billing and compared with a previous software package, Clio has saved me a lot of time and it's really easy to keep track of where you are as it automatically incorporates a workflow. Also, setting up new cases is easy and flexible. You are easily able to incorporate your own requirements and information.

Cons: This is quite specific but for us, the biggest drawback is not being able to present the invoice in exactly the way we want (i.e. a front cover summary of figures without the time description wording). There is a lot of flexibility on the invoices which is great but the one thing we can't do is take the wording away from the first page. Our company like to keep the first page of the invoice very simple and clear and then have the narrative on the following pages. We understand, however, that this is being developed by Clio and should be rolled out some time in the next couple of months or so.

Overall: Right from the outset I have found the support at Clio to be fantastically helpful. It's a big decision working out which product is right for your particular business. Clio, as you expect from most companies in the beginning, were great at informing us what Clio could do and answering our initial questions. However, what I am really impressed about it the continued support from Clio. It does not matter who you speak to, they are friendly, knowledgeable and will do all they can to help you. And if they don't know, which is rare, they will find out and get back to you. And they do get back to you! Plus every phone call is followed up with an email. With regard to the product itself, it is pretty easy to use. Most things are quite logical and therefore you can work it out fairly simply. I am of the view that no product is perfect as every business will have different requirements. In the case of Clio, there are a few very minor things we would like to see available. Clio are continuously developing and improving the product and, I think, everything we have enquired about that is not already a function of Clio, is in the pipeline. However, it is still great for us as it is but we always strive for perfection!

Recommendations to other buyers: Apart from the product being a great software package, the support Clio give is second to none. I am not sure I have come across many companies that are so good in this area.

The customer service is excellent.

Comments: The product is easy to use, but for small consumer protection firm (7 full time staff and 2 part time) like me they have priced themselves out of the market by increasing the cost of a each license by over 100% for support staff and about 50% for attorneys. I don't have to pay that right now because I'm been with Clio since day one and am "legacy," BUT, if I want access to new features I do have to pay it. I'd love, for example, to have access to Office 365 integration, but I'd have to double my cost for it to almost a $828.00 a year PER USER. I have 9 people who use Clio (only three full time lawyers and one part time contractor and the rest support staff, some also part time) and right now that costs me about $3,456.00 a year, which is really steep, BUT, it would cost me $7,452.00 A YEAR to get new features now. YIKES. That's 215% of the steep prices I'm paying now, and I figure it's just a matter of time before I HAVE to upgrade.

Vendor Response

by Themis Solutions on February 04, 2016

We appreciate your comment on the cost difference of moving from Legacy to a Boutique pricing plan. Legacy is similar to Boutique, in that it has access to many of the features originally developed by Clio over the past seven years. It differs in that it is not set up to handle some of the more advanced features we've developed - like Clio Payments. Seven extra years of development and the necessary costs to building and maintaining these advanced features means that there is a difference in the price.

Comments: I toyed with the Clio free trial a few times over the years. Initially I was turned off by it's 'clunky' back end appearance and that horrible yellow colour its branding used to be. For example once you start adding custom fields to contacts and matters, things can get rather messy on that back end, thank god for API integration and document automation I say, so clients never need to know the house isn't always in order..
However, I was hooked back in this year when I noticed a link on their help site that linked to a document about how they had made amendments to their reports to ensure it complied with NSW Legal Services Trust Accounting requirements (this came from a current clients needs and request).
Shock Horror, a foreign product that caters for Australian legal and practice requirements... first tick!!
The second tick came shortly after, whilst still on Clio's Help site I noticed the documents on that site, are well awesome, in fact they are soo good I don't think Ill ever have to contact CLIO customer service... something I loathe doing. The help-guides really let you understand the program ad how to make it work for you... right down to 'why on earth should I create task lists? and if I do, how can I make it work for me.'
The third tick I will mention is its document storage and automation system... Although users are desperately waiting for developers to fully link dropbox so that you can create templates straight into a clients folder in your dropbox (developers have indicated this is on the 'to do list'), not least because down the track, if you need to you can get quick access to the document directly by opening the folder on the dropbox app on your phone. Besides that faux par... clio does make document automation simple... I successfully ran a paperless Tax season this year using generated documents, I produced from Clio templates for tax clients, and then by applying electronic signatures before lodging returns online and e-mailing a copy to the client... simple, organised, clean and best of all, my house is no longer filled with random paperwork depicting peoples financial details.

Clio Rocks It!!

Comments: I've been using this product since approximately 2010 and I love it. The company and its developers are extremely responsive to technical issues, increased functionality suggestions, and training requests. Clio truly works for its customers and bends over backwards to ensure the product remains affordable even while Clio is adding new features and ensuring integration with third party applications. I have not tried it yet, but Clio has just added Court Management to its feature list.

Right now, they are a step ahead and have an eye on improving

Comments: I was on the fence between a few different softwares. They were excited, and enthusiastic. They understand that they cannot stand still, and that things must change. Been with them for a little over two months and have been very satisfied.
