Pros: - Very clean uncluttered UI makes tracking financials a breeze
- I'm a non-accountant and it's still easy to follow.. That says something!
- The new reporting tools are amazing!
- Amazing value for the price you pay.

Cons: - Ability to customize with regards to custom fields and additional tracking categories (can't have it all i guess)

An easy to use invoicing system with so much more.

Pros: I love how easy it is to invoice my clients, and reconcile bank statements. I love the ability to set up rules and easily manage my own bookkeeping basics.

Cons: I don't fully understand the reports and how to really take this software to the next level for full financial management and budgeting. But there are plenty of experienced bookkeepers who can be engaged to assist.

Also, the price is a little high for a micro business. A lite version would be helpful.

Overall: Up to date, live finances.
Ease of use.

Pros: Bank feeds make it easy to reconcile bank statements.
Cloud based so I can work anywhere, and my accountant can log in and do what they need to do.

Cons: Some of the user interface is garbage. I heard it has been designed by accountants. They should have enlisted some small business users to give feedback on how a small business would use it. I give feedback, but nothing changes...

Can be frustrating to encounter the same difficulties, report them to support to get them fixed and then encounter the same problem 12 months on...

There is a mobile app, but I find it next to useless.

Overall: Cloud based, so I can work on my accounts where ever I am.

Pros: From Purchase order to invoiced to billed in 3 steps. Brilliant easy payroll and upload to ATO.
Reporting is a breeze even for a novice, ATO reporting and BAS is simplified.

Cons: Some of the template creation is a little rigid, but believe this is being addressed.
Still building more upgrades so this hopefully will ensure some more fluent processes.

Overall: Easy more user friendly processes with time saved as all documents can be saved in one place

Pros: The Dashboard feature shows all the relevant information you need in one easy to find spot. I don't have to look in 5 different places for one information. It also send out automatic reminders on overdue invoices, which takes a lot of the work off of my plate. Entering and paying invoices is also very easy and straight forward.

Cons: Setting up the banking details for payruns wasn't very intuitive. There were several hurdles that you have to go through, and it can be difficult if you don't know exactly what xero is asking for. Reconciling the bank is also a bit confusing, but only at first. Once you learn how to split payments it become a lot easier

Overall: A very simple and easy to use software that allows me to track all of my financial information. I also like the fact that I'm able to upload a copy of the invoice to xero so I don't have to go fishing around for the paper copy

Pros: Clean, sleek and intuitive user interface. Lots of features without making the system complex. Fantastic integration with the bank.

Cons: Because it's cloud based there are certain disadvantages to non-cloud based accounting packages. Might not be suitable for ALL kinds of businesses.

Pros: The ease of reconciliations, it has made it easy to understand and complete. This is no longer an intensive monthly process, I can keep up to date with my accounts on a daily basis.

Cons: The payroll, I understand that it is an accounting system not a payroll system but payroll it not as easy as it could be. It is also not practical for employees on an award. I find it only works ok for salaried employees.

Overall: Transparency with all of my accounts.

Pros: This product has great report options and very easy to use, this is what I call value for money. nobody can never go wrong when using this product

Cons: i hate the fact that reports are not customized, overall it is a great product, one that i would strongly recommend.

Our small business uses Xero to great effect with invoicing and tracking of all finances.

Pros: Extremely easy to use. Allows transparency and access at all levels, and has streamlined our finances and flow.

Cons: Not much to dislike, other than the ability to reap increased rewards from referrals. Personalisation to the back-end could be improved.

Pros: Full cloud based and mobile optimised. Easy to configure cost codes and get going virtually immediately.

Cons: Found the pricing initially confusing with free trials of different lengths. Just pay monthly and it's an easy cost.

Pros: Matching recipt transactions to Bank Accounts is so easy and simple, and the reason I moved away from another (albeit free) solution.

The basic chart of accounts is a good starting point for a non-accountant like me, plus I like the ability to add custom tracking options (although there is room for improvement!)

Managing expenses is simple.

The limited customer service interaction I've had to date has been average, although still waiting for a resolution.

Cons: You can't invoice different people at the same company using the Xero address book; there are a myriad of various work around a but no simple and obvious solution. When I researched this on the community forums I saw it is a long standing and high demand customer request which to date hasn't been addressed or satisfactorily acknowledged by Xero.

Further, in this research I noticed that they seem to struggle to effectively communicate with customers via the support forum and are lacklustre in acknowledging when something is wrong. Growing pains of a booming SaaS business? Possibly, but it doesn't take much to get this right and they don't seem to.

Overall: Huge time saving an visibility into my accounts. Plus I use it across a few businesses which helps.

Pros: It was an inexpensive alternative to Quickbooks, which we were looking to get away from. Overall, it's not a bad option.

Cons: The syncing with our bank account is somewhat laborious and slow. I wish that were a bit more seamless, but it might be due to the security settings of our bank. Not sure.

Pros: Xero is much easier to use than some of its competitors. I love that payroll calculation are done (without added costs) and filling is so easy!

Cons: I don't like that you have to pay extra for sales tax filing. I don't feel as though it should be a premium service.

Pros: Auto import of bank transactions for simple, easy reconciliation. Very easy to set up and very flexible in the use of a standard chart of accounts or use your own.

Cons: Does not handle projects and/or jobs very well although with a bit of thought can work around.
Don't like how contacts database can very easily get out of control by the automatic addition of new nonsense contacts created from bank transaction imports.
Waiting for a Project/Job Costing module to be added.
Payroll not as slick as rest of the accounting app.

Overall: Time saving in bank reconciliation

good software, let down by dated design interface and unstable bank feeds.

Pros: I love that it is cloud based and the app is very user friendly. I also like that I can toggle between all of my businesses in the app without having to enter username and password for each account.

Cons: The only disadvantage is that more people are not aware of the software. I found it slightly difficult to find an accounting firm in my area that was proficient in using XERO.

Pros: Web based, mobile friendly, always up to date. It can do everything Quickbooks does, but better and more intuitive

Cons: Learning curve is steep, but that's to be expected. You have to learn how to do stuff you previously knew.

Pros: Xero does a good job of keeping invoices, bills and expense claims separate. I use Xero mainly for expense claims, and it's very easy to add multiple line items, and calculate tax rates, etc.

Cons: It seems to take an extra step to see a visual of an old receipt submitted. Sometimes the software runs a little slowly.

Using Xero for 2 years. Beats Quicken by a long shot.

Pros: It actually syncs and works, as opposed to Quicken and quickbooks that have so many glitches it is ridiculous. The reconciliations are very reliable. You do not have to worry about pressing a wrong button and having to redo everything or having duplicate entries like happened to me in Quicken where I lost 6 months of reconciliations in a single data upload.

Cons: Little pricey. Software is only used for accounting once a month in my case. I however syncs like 10 different accounts for us. Amazing.

Overall: Amazing syncing capacity.

Pros: Great for in office businesses and can I say invoices are the bomb with Apple Pay. I experienced a 75% increase when the option for Apple Pay came available. Love it

Cons: There isn't much to say. The only thing is cost. When I was starting out I couldn't afford the costs with the account.

Pros: Great layout, pretty robust system that seems to just make sense for me and the way I work. Lots of reports (that my accountant can run remotely). I do all of the day-to-day accounting and management of finances, but if I run into a question, I can go to the xero community and find an answer to my problem (or lack of understanding). I also like being able to upload receipts for reconciling, etc.

Cons: I seem to have a problem logging on/writing checks after hours or weekend evenings. Occasionally, things just seem to get stuck in a loop and eventually time out.

Pros: I like how simple it is to get up and running with this tool from a users point of view. I use this tool to submit and approve team expenses. It's as simple as entering some information and uploading files. It's also really easy to view how much leave you have as an employee and request time off or submit sick leave.

As a user I didn't need any training and it helps me manage the personal admin side of my role.

Cons: Had some issues with employees submitting time sheets and there seems to be a bug that you can approve your own annual and sick leave. Could do with some improvements to help avoid future issues with team members submitting and approving their own time.

Overall: Easy to manage personal admin in my role such as submitting timesheets, annual leave balances and submitting expenses.

Pros: This software is the real deal that has whole package. Truely feel in control of your business with easy to use features from invoicing, reconciling, payroll, leave management, time sheets etc. I love the edition and enabling of third party software. I personally coupled Xero with a specialized job & inventory management system. However Xero does that too, and in a more than capable fasion for most business'. Together with Xero, it really is, Beautiful Business.

Cons: The only negative i had with the system was when coupled with the specific third party software that i had intergrated with Xero, it would double up on client invoices and created a little extra work. I did later findout from the Xero support centre that this was an issue i could resolve in features of Xero

Overall: A complete look at my business from objective point of view. It was excellent for looking at cash flow and seeing where your money comes from and what it goes on. This, on top of all the other features generally used.

So easy to use, the reconciliation is quick and linking to your bank and accountant is very helpful

Pros: The accounting processes are so simple and easy to follow, it has saved me a huge amount of time and you don't have to be an accountant to understand it. Linking to the bank account allows me to keep everything up to date daily and the accountant having access keeps all our tax obligations running smoothly. Having the security of cloud backup so we don't have to do local back ups.

Pros: Xero automates the collection and allocation of your transactions from your bank statements. The ability to store source documents with the transaction is also great.

Cons: The cost is quite high once you come off the sign on special. Other than this I haven't had many issues with it thus far.

Overall: Helped to speed up the input and allocation of transactions from bank statements

Pros: You can do it all.
It seriously cover 360degrees of accounting there is nothing that they did not cover, it also integrate with all the major banks and so you will have live feed from the bank

Cons: You need to be a trained accountant to learn how to use it. As it does a lot there is a lot that you need to know before you are using it properly.

Cons: Haven't found any significant negatives.

Overall: Xero has been great for us, we've used it since we started the business in June 2010. Its integration with Capsule has been handy and features like recurring invoices are invaluable to a retainer-based business like ours.

The pricing model is reasonable and our accountants like it, as does our book keeper who can work remotely and understands everything that is going on. Bank feed integration is also invaluable.

Pros: Flexibility, it's easy to undo and re-do transactions.

Cons: Additional functionality is charged as extra - e.g. Payroll

Overall: Xero is quick to set up but you need some accounting experience . However, unlike quickbooks it has more functionality and is very adaptable. You can add functions over time such as payroll. We have two businesses operating from the US and the UK and both refer to local laws and taxes. Some functions take a while to work out, split invoices and payments, accounting for forex, the fixed asset register is also cumbersome. Xero is a good bridge between Quickbooks and bigger accounting packages such as SAGE or SAP.

Comments: Well, it is almost 10 months since we started using Xero for our accounting and so far so good. It was so easy to start with, no need for school( You see, i had to attend classes in order to use our previous accounting software), it is just simply done with the user interests at heart.
Previously also, some clients used to complain when invoices/quotations took abit of time to be sent through to them but with Xero, with just a click of a button you are good to go. Especially because they allow one to copy a previous invoice/quote into a new one and send within no time. Another thing i love about Xero is that i can use it on my phone anywhere anytime,for example when stuck in traffic it really comes in handy.
Our cashflow has also improved since Xero gives a daily report on all invoices that are either overdue, due or almost due for proper planning and execution. It also allows us to know the payables that need to be paid and at what time.
Xero is also very affordable since we only pay a small amount per month and so we do get value for our money.
Maybe on the downside is the fact that we are not able to use the payroll part of Xero completely as we would like since it is restricted to some countries. I would be happy if they allowed everyone to use it. Otherwise, kudos Xero!!

Pros: Xero works very well. It is easy to use. It integrates well with other SaaS apps.

Cons: It relies on a working Internet connection - it can't run if you are not connected.

Overall: I've used this for our company for 3 years now, having migrated from MYOB. It works. It's very easy to use and for non-financially-literate staff members to operate. We integrate it with two other SaaS apps: WorkEtc and Trade Gecko.

Overall: From what I hear of people coming from Quickbooks, Xero is a full-featured breath of fresh air. But coming from Freshbooks, it's a nightmare of obscure settings, overly complex processes, and ugly/confusing interface. To be fair, I bank with a local credit union and so can't use the automatic bank reconciliation, which I see as removing a lot of the functionality from the program. Eventually I switched to Zoho Books and haven't looked back... although Zoho doesn't get much press I found it to have the depth of functionality of Xero with the ease-of-use and visually pleasing layout of Freshbooks.

very good but requires costly plug ins to maximise features

Comments: My accountant recommended `I use Xero and the learning curve is quite high. Ive now gotten to a decent enough ability with it but Im spending a high monthly amount on additional software to get everything automated in a seamless way. i.e. receipt scanning/ data extraction. Millage tracking. Stripe (credit card) data breakdown.

I wouldn't feel so miffed about it if I'd not recently tried 'Wave' which is a simplified free Xero like software that does everything above for nothing!

Overall: I can't believe we run a company that has over a million dollars using Xero to keep track of expenses, bills, accounts receivables, banking and more. It is annoying that bank feeds break, sometimes a transaction is repeated and sometimes (most annoying) I reconcile transactions and the next day they appear again so I think I have reconciled March but it turns out I haven't..

Pros: Detailed reconciliations process.

Cons: Reconciliations were a little convoluted--a little too detailed. Streamlining this a bit would be helpful.

Overall: All of the basic features and functionality were present for what we expected with accounting software. However, the import process was a little difficult and the reconciliation process seemed a little overly complicated (specifically, the plethora of codes for coding line items).

So much easier!

Comments: I used Quickbooks for years but Xero is so much simpler to use. I'm very happy that my accountant encouraged me to switch. My favorite part of Xero is the reconciliation process between purchases and transactions imported from my bank and credit card issuer. I rarely have to do any extra work to complete the month end reconciliations.

Pros: Payment reconciliation and linking with bank accounts/payment cards. User interface. Mobile apps. Customization. Ability to add additional users and control their access level. Third party integrations.

Cons: It seems to have issues making tax payments via ACH to the state authorities.

Overall: Xero is hands down the most powerful small business accounting software package I've ever used. Combined with its native payroll functionally and ease of payment reconciliation, it is worth every penny.

Recommendations to other buyers: It's better and more powerful than Wave and QB. Do it!

Comments: I'm a long time user of Xero. It dramatically reduces the amount of time you spend on accounting. One of the features I like best is the integrations. For instance, my quoting software connects to Xero and places my invoices in draft format inside Xero. So no more double-handling. Yes Xero does quotes too, but nowhere near as elegant as Quotient. They've continued to raise prices, which is just the cost of business, but it's annoying to find my US colleagues paying up to a third of the price of what we pay in New Zealand. Whatever the silly excuse Xero provides, that's very uncool. Other than that little gripe, Xero should make accounting easy for you and your accountant.

Pros: I love that my CPA has access to it as well, to help me at the end of the year. I love that it intigrates with another program, Deputy, that I use daily. It's easy to use and helps keep me organized. Love it.

Cons: So far, zero complaints.

Overall: Xero is just what I needed in an Accounting software! As a brand new business owner, I needed something easy to use, easy to understand, payroll and someone to help me file appropriate taxes. Xero has been a HUGE help to me in all these areas! Makes it so easy to file taxes and pay my employees. Love this. Highly recommend.

Recommendations to other buyers: Try it out. I think when I started, I had a month free and then 6 months discounted if I signed on before my 30 days were up. It's worth it. Give it a go. Any issues, customer service reps are FAST and helpful.

Overall: Very simple to use accounting system for the small business. My only complaint is the lack of customization, we just switched our farm over from Sage 50, and cannot customize the check printing in Xero to fit our checks, they require that we use a 'quickbooks' style check.

Pros: Xero makes cash reconciliation very easy.

Cons: Fixed assets has been a little bit clunky.

Overall: I use Xero for my not-for-profit organization. We have a couple of fundraisers and a lot of transactions in short windows. Xero links with my bank, making cash reconciliation a breeze. I like the reports and can run them on a project basis, helping our Board of Directors understand how effective our fundraisers are.

I like that it is online so I can use it anywhere.

The expense reporting is good as well, though understanding how to allocate expenses to different fundraisers took some time. Fortunately, the help section is very robust.

I recommend this for any small business or not-for-profit.

Comments: my experience was because i used Xero accounting package in the Training/Education business that i was a co-director, Porirua City Training Centre. i found the Xero extremely good, one of the features i found very good was the fact that as it was cloud based i was able to authorize our accountanct to have access, therefore when i had a problem he was one click away for putting it right. (i am not a qualified accountant therefore this aspect was invaluable. the end of the year account which was verified by our accountant was also made easy due to their access to all our information.

Comments: I recently started using Xero after years of being an "MYOB Person". I had to set up a new company and thought I'd give it a go.

The biggest issue was figuring out how Xero treated some things differently that I thought I knew how to deal with (in MYOB) - there was a bit of a learning curve there.

However, once you know how the pieces fit together, Xero is a very user friendly product, with a lot of helpful information in the knowledge base to cover off on most questions I had.

There are still a couple of quirks I find annoying though. Dealing with expense reimbursement seems unnecessarily cumbersome, and setting up "dummy bank accounts" to deal with clearing accounts and the like is a bit of a pain if that's the direction you choose to go in.

However overall I am enjoying using Xero and find it to be a very well put together piece of software.

Cons: Payroll was maddening. I went back to Gusto.

Overall: I moved to Xero thinking it would be a good way to combine my payroll and accounting. After using Gusto for payroll, Xero has been a nightmare. Employees are not being paid on time and they can't access important tax documents that they need in an easy and efficient way. It has been incredibly frustrating.

Comments: A great product from Down Under .. actually New Zealand. Xero offers a product portfolio of cloud-based accounting and workflow solutions that are easy to use. Payment is Saas and subscription based.
If you are migrating from another legacy system they offer helpful templates and services also..
I would consider taking a good look at.

Comments: I've used Xero for several years now. They were great at pioneering the cloud-based platform in the early days as one of the first adopters. Now they've been moved to America their customer service has deteriorated and the product development is VERY slow. The forums are full of very necessary feature requests that are stock standard in other more "professional" accounting products. Their development of these things seems to be a low priority, showing they favor chasing new business rather than investing in their existing customer base.

All that said, it's great for small business. I'm coming from a medium enterprise size background, so find some of the functionality or lack thereof frustrating. All the integration with other products and service is fantastic, and the business-to-business ability is helpful and the way of the future.

I have Xero used in a small sole trader, a small professional engineering company and at a church. As a book-keeper, it is very helpful to be able to assist clients remotely, anywhere, anytime. Bank fees are a huge time saver and work well in Xero. All the standing entries, recurring transactions etc work well and are quite "smart".

I hope they keep investing in product development because that's the only real downside to their good product.

Cons: Still takes a bit of time to get everything set up, but that's to be expected when setting up anything accounting related

Overall: I signed up for Xero to help keep my own books for my businesses, and so that I could easy create Profit and Loss sheets for my various ventures. It's affordable and easy to use. If you're familiar with Mint, it's very similar in how you categorize transactions and set up rules. And the Xero team was really helpful when I was just getting started. Totally worth it.

Pros: All information we need is contained in the dashboard on a central screen.

Cons: Sometimes you need to have an understanding of accounts and tax as the software is very in depth, however, this is also a good thing as it makes it more flexible for the accountant to use.

Overall: Started using Xero as the international version of another popular online accounting tool we looked at, did not support integration with any of the apps we were using to run our business. Xero offers seamless integration with ARLO Training & Event Software saving us hours an each day. For non-finance people, it's quite easy to understand and to use but still robust enough to keep our Accountant happy. Reporting is generally good but not the best for reporting on sales commissions. Definitely, a recommend for small businesses who need to work fast and efficiently.

It's a real complete Accounting Software, quite easy to use. You nee to have some basic Accounting notions to manage correctly all the functions
It's a software created for English speaking and with hte english notations countries; for example you can't produce an invoice with the comma decimal separator; so you can't use this (basic) function for an Accounting Software in most of European Countries
Xero has a wonderful list of reports that give you the entire control on your finances
Some online integrations (like with PayPal) are extremely useful
The list of the banks that you can connect for the reconciliations is quite poor

Cons: Less user-friendly than possible- with more features. They should probably hide lots of advanced features for new users.

Overall: The reason why we shifted to Xero from a free accounting platform with our Business Athena Tuition (www.athenatuition.co.uk) is that we had begun using Tutorcruncher- tutor agency business software. Tutorcruncher has integrated with Xero to make our tutor and agency invoices and payment orders easy to upload and place in Xero. In this regard Xero is ideal, it integrates with the most important software that we as an agency use. If you use tutorcruncher, you should use Xero. Aside from this, Xero's functionality closely mirrors other accounting software but seems to be among the more modern and cloud based. Most accountants will be familiar with Xero which is another major reason to use it. However, compared to the free software I had previously used, it was more complex and therefore slightly less intuitive. However, it is also much more feature rich. Recommend.

Recommendations to other buyers: If you are a tutoring agency and use Tutorcruncher, this should be your choice.

Cons: Terminology is slightly different from other software and the way of doing things is a little different but overall very easy to learn.

Overall: Our organization has used Quickbooks for a very long time and we made the decision to switch to Xero. It was worth it. The customer service is amazing and the product is pretty easy to learn. It has its own way of doing things that are different from Quickbooks but is much better. The expense report feature that allows employees to directly input their expenses into the system is a massive time saver. Definitely, recommend giving it a shot!

Pros: It is web based and so accessible anywhere with an internet connection, rather than requiring specific software to be available for each user's computer.

Cons: Security privileges and access permissions was a little complicated to set up initially.

Overall: The transition to Xero has been worth it in every way. It is cheaper than our previous solution. It is very easy to use and train people to get up to speed. Cons: Some features cannot be customised - but can't really complain.

Overall: I was an MYOB guru for many many years, but I always found it clunky and slow with many "features" that actually caused you to duplicate work and effort.

I moved to Xero 2.5yrs ago and I've gone from 2-3hrs of paperwork a week to 5mins per day. A huge drop in effort was required to do my accounts.

BAS is seamless, and my accountant bills have halved.

I would recommend Xero to anyone without a heartbeat or blink.

Recommendations to other buyers: Do it at the beginning of a new financial year - it will save you hours of effort and costs for your accountant.

Overall: We've moved from another software 4 years ago and have not looked back. Bank feed setup is easy, recon is a
breeze. There are lots of add-ons which can assist with specific needs and there are tons of integrations with sales force and other big guns.
The only issues I see is pricing. If you run multiple entities (i.e. for service companies or trusts) the subscription cost adds up quickly. This is because the most basic plan is essentially useless (5 bank transactions a month... if that's all you need, you don't run a business). Compared to emerging competitors pricing is very high.
Another issue, if you rely on it, is email support only. While responses come back within 1 to 3 days, players like Intuit have live chat support, which is amazing at their price point.
All in all, Xero is a solid solution for us though and while we've moved some (nonpayroll) entities off it and onto QuickBooks, it remains our accounting mainstay for the core operations entity. Hope this helps.

Recommendations to other buyers: use it for entities you need the full feature set for. Albeit awesome, it's too expensive to run a single investment property through it, or a holding company. Subscription cost will be prohibitive.

Pros: Simple, clean interface.

Overall: Simple, clean interface. Syncs well with my bank. Prompts me to look at things that need my attention. Granted my CPA access so she can help me at tax time.

Comments: I hate book keeping, but Xero's layout makes it easy, direct bank feeds make matching up transactions like a bit of a game, which, for me, actually makes me want to do it! The app is great on the run, no more purse full of receipts, I can just add them in straight away. Would recommend Xero to any one with any size business.

Overall: Having used a multitude of finance packages over the last two decades, Xero stands out as THE most user-friendly of all. The constant updates all seem in keeping with the user's needs & are minimally disruptive. Great work guys. Keep going :)

Recommendations to other buyers: The small package is really small so generally, you need to start with the next step up as a business.

Overall: As a long-time QuickBooks user, I found Xero to be a little more challenging to navigate. It seems to be written for the non-accountant so that hopefully it means that the clients will have an easier time using the product.

I do like the ease of reconciling the bank account on a daily basis. I find this to be helpful to clients who don't want to wait until year end.

I look forward to improving the rating for Xero as I use the software more.

Comments: I really enjoy working in Xero. The interface is easy to navigate, the help documents are written well, and I've had no problem with getting help from Customer Service. It's via email, which takes time - the main downside.

Overall: The use of bank rules and cash coding, together with the robust bank feeds will save you tons of time and keep you informed minute by minute of your cash flow!

Comments: As an accountant/bookkeeper I like Xero. I like it better than QB online. It seems to be better suited to someone with an accounting background as opposed to QB which seems to be aimed more at business owners that don't have an accounting background. I find most areas of the program to be simple and easy to use.

Cons: Not developed for the Canadian or US market, no asset functionality, no payroll, no GST. Feeds break all the time.

Overall: I used Xero for 3 years thinking I had found the best online solution. At first I ignored the lack of features for the Canadian market (GST, payroll, assets) telling myself that these features would come soon. After endless promises of fixing assets (still not fixed) and realizing that they will never add Canada specific payroll or GST features, I ended up switching to Quickbooks online and couldn't be happier. If you're in Canada or the US, don't even think about Xero, seriously, just not worth your time. You will need to use other ways to manage payroll, and GST will just be calculated wrong.

They do add features, not too often, but most of the time it is for the Australia or NZ markets and/or useless report improvements which I care little about. Then they would increase the price justifying it with all these latest "improvements". Meanwhile, if you look at the prices we pay in Canada, compared to other places, it is a total ripoff, especially considering you are limited to 20 transactions and 5 invoices at the $20 US/month plan. No thanks.

Quickbooks isn't perfect but you get soooo much more for your money and it makes life way easier.

Comments: We recently switched to Xero payroll and see a lot of quality and potential in the product. Unfortunately, we have been really suffering from the lack of direct customer support. We have many employees in different situations and have faced many issues when dealing with updating employee profiles, entering sick leave, working with annual leave and making any change in general. There are beneficial features to using Xero's payroll system, but at the moment the lack of customer support overshadows this.

Pros: Integrations with other softwares that provides ultra office efficiency.

Cons: There are no automatic reports and the customer support is in Australia so you have to be patient when waiting for an answer.

Overall: Xero is my favourite of all the accounting software. Its easy to use, great looking and has so many integrations that are great for our offices needs. It pulls awesome reports and is extremely intuitive. Their customer support is great and the are regularly adding more features for use.

Pros: Payroll services are a real bargain.

Cons: Support is lacking, you need to use the community or pay a third party.

Overall: Xero is an outstanding bookkeeping software. Keeps our company organized and allows us to take a snapshot of our business at any time. When getting started, take the time to organize yourself. Understand you chart of accounts and beginning balances. I love the ability to sink with my credit card accounts (for easy categorization of expenses) and the direct deposit payroll services.

Cons: Has had some downtime recently. They're good about notifying about upcoming maintenance intervals, but there have been a couple of incidences of downtime that have affected my work. They fixed it quickly, which is really all you can ask. Stuff happens in the technical realm.

Overall: I've started doing some bookkeeping, and I've immediately gravitated toward Xero because of it's ease of use and outstanding customer & partner support.

The company that dominates this market has (in my experience) horrendous customer support. That's where Xero really stands out as a strong competitor. I find their functionality to be much better than the current market leader AND I can easily get help if I need it.

Where Xero shines is in making reconciliation easy. It learns as you go and makes intelligent suggestions that make future reconciliations faster. The cash coding feature is also a real time-saver as it allows me to reconcile larger numbers of transactions that will all be coded to the same account.

Xero also offers direct download from a large number of financial institutions. Even being in Arkansas, I've been able to download statements directly from all the banks I've needed.

Xero has a huge marketplace of add-ons to assist with things like Point of Sale, Inventory Management, Sales Tax filing and much more. It's safe to say any small business should be able to get all of their accounting and bookkeeping needs met within the Xero ecosystem, and they'll get much better customer support there than with other products.

Recommendations to other buyers: Definitely get certified and use the practice company to familiarize yourself with Xero. It's like driving cars by different manufacturers - the functions are the same, but the buttons and knobs are in different places. If you're coming from another platform, just put in the time to get familiar with it.

Overall: I'll admit, Xero requires a bit of a learning curve for those who regularly use alternate software suites for accounting (whether cloud or desktop). However, once you are familiar with the interface and navigation, Xero provides some great features.

Xero's pricing is great for companies who plan to use Xero's payroll (which is included with the most popular package). It certainly beats the cost of competing software.

One of the stand-out features of Xero is the elimination of sub-accounts on the general ledger. Instead, all accounts are at the same level, and you can create custom layouts for your P&L and Balance Sheet to view information in whatever groups are convenient for you (and it can be changed). This makes tracking income from various sources and paying sales tax simpler!

The one major hang-up I have with Xero is that journal entries cannot affect bank accounts. That means extra steps are required when your JE needs to affect the bank accounts. The only hang-up I have (which is also not a deal breaker) is that if you record a payment to the wrong bank account and need to change it, you have to delete the whole thing and re-enter it as a "spend money" transaction on the correct account. This can make for time-consuming clean-up since you cannot even fix those errors with a Journal Entry.

Still, Xero is a great fit for many industries and is innovative and creative in solving accounting problems.
