Pros: I liked the ability to form "rooms" around certain teams or projects. If only a handful of team members needed to collaborate around a specific initiative, they could do so in real time. It also took away the dreaded "reply all" bug that is common on email threads. In the rare instance someone was on a topic thread and didn't need to be, they could remove themselves without fear of more inbox clutter coming their way.

Cons: There were occasional outages - sometimes at the worst possible time. The customer service team was friendly and responsive, however.

Pros: The interface is clean and mobile app works great. The app integrates well with active directory and other services.

Cons: not as many integrations as with the cloud-based version with the on-location version. No easy fix for typos or retracting messages.

Overall: Good collaboration tool and good audio.

Pros: Software has everything we need, Atlassian Support is great, easy to admin, new features are always coming.

Cons: Cost - why does chat software have to cost so much. Granted, Hipchat's pricing is very similar to its competitors.

Pros: You can easily setup "Rooms" where you can have a discussion around a certain topic with other in your organization. You can easily have a 1:1 chat with another person in your organization.

Cons: You can't have a conversation with more and one person without creating a Room. The UX isn't the greatest.

Overall: HipChat enables me to quickly get in contact with others in my organization with having to send an email.

It's really awesome to be able to have access to everyone in the company. Custom group chats too.

Pros: Easy to keep track of all conversations in one place. Love being able to see everyone on the left side as well including my groups.

Cons: Nothing at the moment. Still learning all the ins and outs. I wish there were more emojis available.

Pros: I like the ability to install different apps & features into the chat which are extremely useful. Also, all of the agents in my office have the app on their phone for hipchat, which allows person to person, person to group chats, allowing everyone to have access at any time.

Cons: There isn't much I would complain about for this software. I would say that I wish it was easier to grant permissions to certain users, but otherwise, it has all of the functionality I require.

HipChat is a useful tool for communicating with team members.

Pros: You can create different channels for chats so that you can organize your chats by topic or client. It makes it easier to use when you are searching for a topic of conversation.

Cons: It has fewer integrations and features compared to other similar softwares. If you are going to spend the money, I would do it elsewhere.

Pros: It is a very easy product to use and allows you to communicate with co-workers fast while saving you time from walking around the office.

Cons: There seem to be a lot of updates to the software and you have to restart the system a couple times a week.

Overall: Being able to have conversations about new events throughout the office without having to leave your desk. It is also a great tool to get opinions from co-workers as well as ask questions when needed.

Pros: This tool is exactly what it promises. An easy to use the messaging tool however beyond that there isn't much to it.

Cons: I feel like it crashes or has downtime more than a messaging app should. I also don't like the fact that you can't have multiple people in a direct message.

Pros: The are several things that I like about Hipchat. First, it's extremely user friendly. I never have trouble figuring out a setting or preforming a task. Secondly, there is never any down time. I come into work and Hipchat is all ready to go! Thirdly, I love mobile aspect. It's fantastic! It keeps me up to date on company happenings wherever I go.

Cons: Although I pretty much love every aspect of Hipchat... It could use a screen shot feature for quickly screen capturing something you are working on that you need to show a co-worker.

Overall: Numerous! Being able to quickly talk with co-workers, being up to date on company happenings, not having to bother people in person or on the phone... being able to send attachments and pictures quickly... starting group chats..... the list goes on and on!

Pros: I like that you can pull it up anywhere and send messages, pictures, or links to any employee in our office. I also like that you can set up specific rooms for certain divisions of our company. We have for sales, support, and engineering.

Cons: Sometimes it logs me out and it will take a minute to load. Also when I get to work in the morning, it takes the longest out of all the programs to start up on my computer.

Overall: We are able to quickly communicate with anyone in the office.

Pros: HipChat is easy to install and either use the desktop client or the web client. They are always posting new updates and fixes without really changing the core product--so users always feel comfortable with it.

Cons: I can't really think of a negative of the software. Perhaps one of the Pro's actually appears to be a negative at times because the software requests that you close in order to apply updates. Since they regularly update the software, it seems to require regular restarts (maybe once every three weeks).

Pros: Free unlimited storage for messages that are sent through the software between users and in the channels.

Cons: Slow, notifications in mobile app are challenging the performance of the Yugo, turtle speed notifications in Mac app, no sync between read messages on different clients (read something on a Mac, it shows as unread on an iPhone), search is worthless, no ability to reset password from iPhone or from mobile website, password stops working on iPhone, the app shows notifications on an iPhone when there are none.

Overall: It kinda, sorta, sends messages and despite being a terrible failure at that it doesn't send me spam.

Pros: Ease of Use

Cons: Only Admins can set up chat groups

Overall: We use HipChat for our real-time interoffice communications. We have group chats set up, and individuals can also chat among themselves. It's really great, though it's always embarrassing when you think you're in a private chat, and in reality, you're writing in the ENTIRE company's group chat!

I do wish everyone had permissions to set up groups, so you could have a chat group for, say, the company kickball team rather than just formal work chat groups. And I'm really not a fan of the emoticons. But it's a breeze to use, and I'm a huge fan of having both visual and auditory notifications. I need to hear the tone alerting me to a new message, and I need to see that flashing yellow on my desktop with the red number reminding me I've forgotten about the tone I heard. It's great having both features, and being able to utilize both simultaneously. Overall, I'm a fan of HipChat.

Recommendations to other buyers: Improve Emoticons and Ease of Use of Emoticons!

Pros: Easy to set permissions, easy to mention and notify people, good file sharing, great integrations (gifs, bots etc), available on desktop and mobile. A great way to keep track, without the emails!

Cons: Not many bad points! Sometimes if you're signed in on mobile, or have hip chat open on another device, it can be easy to miss a message but that's about it .

Overall: We use HipChat as an agency. That way the whole team can be in on the conversation - and so much information and documentation that would otherwise clog up your email, can be transferred in a quick hip chat message. Different rooms can be created for different conversations (you can set the privacy levels and participants for each), and its easy to @message people to specifically notify them.
HipChat follows a more chronological order than other app like Slack, which I feel makes it more easy to follow.

Pros: Easy to use and configure. Integrates with other Atlassian products. Has messages history, attachments, and in the paid version has video chat that works great.

Cons: None so far.

Overall: Our development team has used HipChat for over two years. We highly recommend it. Its interface is simple and very intuitive.

You can create message groups by inviting multiple members to be aware of all the details of a particular project. You can also initiate messages one by one.

If you use other Atlassian tools it can also be easily integrated. For example, in our case we use Jira so we can integrate the creation of issues so that they automatically generate messages in a group of HipChat.

Pros: Capability to be integrated with various other tools.
@mention helps to notify a particular user even in a group chat.

Overall: In one of my last past project, we've used Hip Chat for inter-team communication. Our team comprised of people working from different geographical locations. We've used it in such a way that we tied to our Continuous Integration and Task tracking tool and any updated on them were reflected real time on our group chat window.

Pros: Ease of use.

Cons: None

Overall: Our company has used Hipchat for the last couple years. We've been impressed with the ease-of-use of the product and the attention to the product. Every week or two, we're getting updates, which are easily applied via restarting the software. It is hosted software and easily implemented and FREE! We have even added our Asian partner so that he can easily contact us in the evening (morning for him).

Recommendations to other buyers: I like this much better than google chat or aol messenger--it seems more appropriate for a corporate environment.

Pros: I like the group and one-on-one chat functionality.

Cons: I wish there was a feature that notified you when chats were happening but wasn't in your face notifications that pop up every time. I wish there was some middle ground.

Overall: I've been using Hipchat for about five months. I use it on a daily basis for office communication between coworkers, managers, etc. I used Slack at my old job, but now I've become accustomed to Hipchat and have enjoyed using it.

Recommendations to other buyers: It would be fun if we could incorporate Giphy into chat related functions. At my old company, on Slack, we could type "/giphy sarcasm" for example and it would spit out a gif. Since most all companies also use Hipchat for personal communication and that includes funny banter, that would be a nice feature.

Pros: User friendly and very effective way to communicate across teams. Platform agnostic, mobile, easy to use. Also like the fact files are archived and searchable. Unlimited users for us as a nonprofit organization is an enormous bonus.

Cons: Not what I need for project management, so we integrated HipChat with Asana (free version) to add that element. Was buggy on some PCs, but not sure why. The video call feature is on desktop only.

Overall: As a nonprofit, HipChat generously granted us this tool to create work teams and improve communications across our organization. Plus, it's integration with other collaboration tools such as Asana really enabled us to improve our communications and work flow. There was a small learning curve in setting up HipChat and integrating it with other tools, but the user interface is quite simple after that. We did have some difficulty getting HipChat running on some PCs, while other PCs and Macs were fine. But the fact it's web-based and platform agnostic makes it a great tool that we use every day, in conjunction with the free version of Asana.

Recommendations to other buyers: HipChat was very generous in giving us a grant for this tool, which made it a no-brainer over costly alternatives such as Microsoft 365 or Slack. Combined with Asana, it covers all our project management, workflow and teamwork needs. It's been great.

Pros: It really does function as intended

Cons: The benefits it brings are likely to be marginal for many teams

Overall: Ah, I remember being really excited to start using HipChat. It worked great on mobile when a lot things really didn't and for a time everyone really seemed to enjoy it. After honeymoon period replete with humorous threads and a halfhearted attempt to port over a resource base (they sell you on the idea of being able to find institutional knowledge better than email) usage became more sporadic with some teams continuing to build a strong community and others falling into disrepair. In the end, it wasn't a disaster but fell well short of any goal to dramatically improve internal communication.

Comments: HipChat is the basis of our team communication, especially important as we have remote workers on the team. Various rooms can be set up for specific projects, sub-teams etc. allowing more targeted conversations, as well as being able to search through history to pull back key information as needed. Note that a longer search history requires the paid version.

It's also well supported by external products that can automatically post into a chat room, for example when a server you are monitoring goes down.

The combination of easy chat, plus automated alerts and updates from our external systems, makes it ideal for us. Customisation of notifications by room can also be handy at limiting excess noise from more social chat rooms.

Comments: Amazing piece of software - I think finding this was one of the best things I've found in a long while.

Simple to setup and use, the team love it and the emoticons that are just so apt.

Besides the powerful system, there's also tonnes of addons to make life even more productive.

We used to use Facebook for communicating - but this allows us to be more efficient - and we can separate chats depending on the project.

The only gripe I've got is that you can't have a mobile notification for every message, only @ mentions - but if that's the only thing I can fuss about then there's really not a lot wrong!

All of this, and it's still free to use! Or £2/user a month for some addons. I'd be surprised if you're still reading this!

Comments: HipChat is the best chat client, with caveats. Obviously the competition, Slack, is a great client too. The one thing that I think differentiates Slack from HipChat is the look of the app. Slack just looks approachable and HipChat looks a love child from Windows 95 and CSS 2.0. The approachability makes Slack more attractive to users and then app builders want to spend their time making integrations for the biggest audience.

If you live in the Atlassian eco system, then HipChat is a must. It has tighter integration with Bitbucket and Jira for sure. When you use those three pieces of software together it makes working with them a real pleasure. It relives you of that cognitive load of deciphering messages in chat logs. The approach I never knew I loved was how if you enter a Jira task ID into your Bitbucket commits a new message with all the right links wind up in your HipChat conversation. Its awesome.

Seriously though, HipChat has been critical for communicating between teams and team members. We also integrate it with a lot of other Atlassian services, which helps us manage notifications+messages all in one place.

The biggest con is that 1-on-1 chats are readable by administrators. We use a standalone HipChat server, and we've heard rumors that management and IT can read our chats. I don't ever want my privacy compromised, and this is a fairly large problem in my opinion.
