Pros: It's easy to use, it's very powerful, it offers a ton of great integrations with all of the other services we use, it keeps getting more features and functionality added regularly, it has a very functional Linux client, it's fun and enjoyable to engage with.

Cons: Sometimes it helps productivity and communication in many ways by consolidating it all in one place, but other times it saps productivity by making it too easy to get mired down in conversations often unrelated to the task at hand. It's not Slack's fault necessarily, and there are some tools in place to try and help, but it's easy to get caught up "using Slack" in some way instead of getting more work done.

Overall: Previously, we had email, Hangouts, physical office pop-ins, and a slew of other methods of communication-fighting for our attention. In the case of email, things were getting lost because team communication was getting mixed in with newsletters and another automated email, and was unrelated to the chats we were having in other systems. Now, just about everything we discuss is either in Slack or integrated with Slack, and it's searchable and shareable and all of that off-the-cuff knowledge people share no longer simply gets lost. Our team is much better off with Slack!

Pros: Makes communicating and sharing code so much easier specially when working with people at different locations. We also use it for when we outsource projects to communicate with other teams.

Cons: There is no way to add custom notification sounds. That would be sweet. Sometimes the auto suggest for users gets in the way.

Overall: Ability to communicate effectively internally and externally.

Pros: The channels make it easy to condense communication in one easy-to-find location. Shortcuts make it easy to operate within the tool. UX is great!

Cons: Inability to quickly create a multi-people chat with shortcuts. Formatting in the chat message forces to clear formatting elsewhere and then post the poll code in Slack.

Overall: Much improved and easier communication and collaboration on work items.

Pros: I was involved with a software engineering course at my university. In the course, students broke up into various groups to work on software projects. We used Slack to facilitate communication.

- Slack is reliable.

- The students seemed to enjoy using it to communicate.

- And, it was free to get started with.

Cons: - If you don't pay, then your older messages and conversations get deleted.

Pros: This software is great for communication among my classmates when doing group projects. I'm able to keep my social life separate from school life, so I don't get distracted on Facebook or Twitter.

Cons: It's hard to get people to start using it, because most students haven't heard of it, but once they try it, they seem to like it.

Pros: Windows app is clean, intuitive, and easy to use.

Synchronization between windows app and android app is great. I like the fact when I am logged into slack on Windows and have it on, it does not do an alert on my android but when I log off from the Windows app, it does. It works really well and a great feature because I am only notified when necessary.

I really enjoy using the giphy integration for the app as well, it makes my collaboration with my co-workers much more interesting than words and standard smileys.

Cons: I am not sure if this might be a feature that exists and I just do not know about it but there is no ability to add additional users to a direct message conversation. I have to make sure I include everyone that's relevant the first time when starting the direct message for one-off discussion topics where it does not make sense for me to create a channel.

Overall: A nice, clean, collaboration platform that has a lot of possibilities especially with the myriad of app integrations that could be done to it.

Overall: Easiness of use, organized communications, reaching team members easily.

Pros: easy-to-use, organized, clean design, Slack makes communicating with team members easy and instantaneous. Brings together cross-sectoral members in a functional, fast way

Pros: Slack is a very easy system to learn. The learning curve is less to none. My team loves the ease of use and the many features we can use to track and update each other.

Pros: Has been a great replacement for email for basic conversations, allowing it to happen in threads related to jobs rather than email chains. Easy to use, iPhone app for push notifications is nice, and just the right amount of features that I would expect for a free service.

Cons: Older versions of MacOS cannot even run the web interface. Has forced us to upgrade some older machines, or simply go without the service on them.

Pros: Keeping department communication open and synced
Easily able to search past information
Smartphone apps keep everyone online

Cons: the desktop app could be a little prettier and the chat screen could use some polishing
the price could be cheaper

Overall: I am the owner of a small business with 25 staff members. Staying organized and keeping communication open between all departments was a nightmare until Slack, originally we used email, facebook messenger, and sms with no way to make sure everyone had the info they needed and no real easy way to search back past conversations to find needed data. Slack fixed all of those issues by giving us the ability to log all communications and easily label them per the topic or department they belonged to. The smartphone apps were amazing for our out of office sales reps. This is a must have for any company

Recommendations to other buyers: Take the time to properly build the separate department and topic chat rooms and tags at the beginning of using slack

Comments: It's no wonder Slack is the go-to choice for internal business communication. Love the ability to quickly share files. The mobile app is very user friendly and keeps me in the loop when on the road. Also, the customizable channels and messages make group communication a breeze. I've actually started using it in my personal life as well. Way better than being stuck in group message hell and the gif library makes conversations quite entertaining.

Then our sister company, who shares the same office, tried to add me in their team, but were unable to through the desktop. I felt that this was an odd obstruction to a normal function.

Pros: Ease of use, Addons and script compatibility.

Cons: N/A

Overall: Introduced this product into my usual team-project workflow for easy communication between members. It was quickly picked up by all teams and within a matter of weeks it had become a staple of communication.

The ability to split into private and public channels to easily manage different project areas with invaluable and the added bot/script compatibility helped immensely and will be used more in the coming future.

A recommended tool for any team willing to enter the social-media era.

Pros: Everything!

Cons: Nothing, so far!

Overall: Our team initially used another service, which was okay, but not as organized as Slack! Slack allows you to organize different rooms (public/private) per your departments or preferences. You can also send direct messages, and video chat, if needed. Invitations can be sent to people that you'd like to become apart of your Slack community. You can pin important posts/files/etc. for members to be able to easily access and view and/or download. So, it's a real game changer for those companies seeking better communication tools for a remote work environment.

Pros: Centralized platform for project and team management.

Cons: Can be distracting if you're not careful.

Overall: Really easy way to centrally manage all projects and follow progress of team members. Because of the tagging and metadata, is a powerful platform where you can do virtually everything.

Unfortunately, our users began to suffer from slack creep, where you end up incessantly checking slack, instead of doing work. Plus, most people have notifications enabled, which means you get pinged with notifications anytime people post things to you, which is a massive distraction.

These are people problems, rather than with the software, but you've been warned. The software itself is great.

Comments: We introduced Slack into our studio to cut down on emails and enable quick chat-like conversations. Slack works perfectly for this and all staff make use of it daily. We make use of the channels feature for specific projects or topics, and there's been no shortage of banter in the #townsquare thread.

One draw-back we found with the free account was the speed with which older messages disappeared. Was slightly frustrating when we wanted to go back a reviews some comments from a few days back, and they were gone - but that's their business modal and needed to start paying to get the full archive of messaging.

Comments: Slack is a smart tool, perfect to connect with your team. At our company, we have different sites all around the world, yet, we all feel closely connected thanks to slack. It is well organized, making it simple to create public or private channels, (with a specific purpose), private groups or direct messages. There's a variety of integrations. Some, add personality to your messages (like emojis and gifs) and others are really useful in work-related topics, speeding up processes and helping you manage your time more efficiently (reminders, gDocs, etc). The messages are archived, and searching for them is pretty easy. There new "Threads" feature makes the messaging experience even better. It avoids spamming the channels. It also has voice calls. Pros: Easy to use, the cross platform & mobility option

Cons: command line tasks option

Overall: Hi there,

First of all, I Love slack! It solves me a communication issues by consolidating in one place all the projects I am currently work with.

I think the most relevant feedback I provide is regarding the other apps integration usability. It is a little bit difficult to use command line base; a better approach could be using a graphic contextual menu of options to do some tasks.

Additional to this, as a Kanban expert, it could be more valuable if slack provides integration to open source Kanban tools. I just found an integration to Kanbanize.

Hope this helps.

Marco L Salas

Recommendations to other buyers: Have more apps integration with Kanban tools (open source based), with other productivity apps like Evernote to create notes.

Pros: Everything! But in all seriousness, the API is it's biggest pro. If it doesn't exist yet, then you can build it. And with all the gems, modules etc it is super easy to build for slack.

Cons: Threading, long requested, finally delivered. I suspect it's still being evaluated, but this is the only thing that was actually better implemented in Flowdock. Otherwise Slack wins in every aspect.

Overall: Having used many collaboration tools before, none of them have transformed company culture as much as Slack. Rather than just being a messaging tool, Slack actually makes you more effective.
The absolutely amazing API means you can turn slack into everything you want.
Want to deploy new commits directly from slack? There's a plugin for that.

Comments: It's tough convincing people to switch over to Slack as it doesn't bring that much to the table. It does become nice when you integrate it with some of your existing software like Trello. Again it's only useful when you both use Trello and Slack.

Other than that it does work nicely when you share various content in the chat windows, by giving you a good preview of the content before you view it. Muting notifications are nice but it doesn't allow you to mute a single chat for a limited time.

Pros: Looks good in theory

Cons: You need to build your business operations and culture around it.

Overall: Maybe my company didn't really get this. Maybe we are too old and wedded to email and Skype. But I just couldn't see the point of Slack unless you are going to have a policy decision to ditch the other tools. People just gravitate back to what they know. Needs a proper culture shift in the organization to make the best use of it.

Comments: Slack is a great way to communicate. It's not perfect, but it gets the job done and has personality. Great for a workforce of millennials, which is what most of my team is. We encountered problems when having too many people in the group audio chat, and had to resort to Google Hangouts, but that's the only bad thing I've encountered.

The best or nothing. Really.

Comments: So many people export the value of Slack. The biggest complaint I have here is "value for the money". I'll put it to you in simple terms: Download the HipChat server and HipChat client (Mac, Windows and Mobile clients) and save yourself a ton of money. HipChat will also give you encryption, AD integration/SSO, and an API.

The user interface leaves less than to be desired also. I have no idea why Slack is valued at $ when better products exist for free with the same or better feature sets.

Pros: Call feature and integration with other platforms such us Salesforce is great.

Cons: The mobile app needs more stability in some devices, especially android.

Cons: Honestly, I got nothing here.

Overall: After several years of most, if not all, of our internal discussions taking place in lengthy, fractured, and frustrating email threads, we decided to "try out" Slack and see if it was something we could use. Of the entire organization, I was the least optimistic, but now I cannot imagine working without this tool. Even without any integrations, internal communication is now so much easier and cleaner. Integrations allow us to centralize communication from a surprisingly growing number of third-party services. We've even developed integrations for our own apps. I cannot overstate the value this app provides.

Pros: Ease of use for current and new employees. Free teams and affordable pricing for companies. Continual improvements from small fixes to big features.

Cons: No spellcheck in Posts, lack of file organization features, a few important integrations are still missing.

Overall: Slack has become our communication hub, having switched over during the early days from HipChat. Most of our major tools integrate seamlessly with Slack (we even removed Zapier recently!) and, in conjunction with Notion.so for long-term document storage, everything we need can be found easily by our team.

Our needs from Slack start with small annoyances, such as not having spellcheck in the Posts feature (which, for many people, makes that feature irrelevant) and not having better file organization, storage, and discovery in general. But for an in-the-moment communication tool with most communication being say-if-and-move-on, Slack is an excellent app for our team.

Recommendations to other buyers: We  Slack. Please add spellcheck to Posts. It's been long enough.

Pros: Easy to use, beautiful.

Cons: Limited, poorly organized, slow, bloated.

Overall: We use Slack for internal communication between many teams. It is straightforward to use, indeed, its usability is the winning point. One does not take too much time to understand how it works and can get proficient in it very fast.

Yet, it is very hard to make sense of knowledge that is archived there. It is also too easy for more talkative employees to monopolize a channel - not that they did anything wrong, it is just that the tool leads to it. It is limited permission system makes it awkward to allow many users to create channels: either user can do almost anything, or cannot create their topics' channels.

Those are mostly details, however, because the worst problem is the performance. Slack is surprisingly heavy for the kind of features it brings. Their native clients are also bloated, but it is even worse to people like me, who work on platforms that do not have native clients: we're forced to have many tabs open, which consumes a lot of memory and slow down the browser. Since there is no way to compartmentalize channels into organizations, we ended up with many slack domains here, which made everything even worse: I have many different memory eaters.

In general, I do like the appearance and simplicity, but I'd expect simplicity to make me do less with more. This is not what Slack provides.

Comments: It's like IM or Messenger slightly tailored for business.
It's important for me to use a separate interface for work. It's pretty easy to get distracted by other text messages or FB Messenger if I'm also using that for work.

Comments:
1. Slack gives you a centralized place to communicate with your colleagues through instant messages and in chat rooms
2. Slack helps in reducing the time for easy communication.
3. Slack is a really complete instant messaging and collaboration system.
4. One of its best features is easy to use file sharing system. It works really well, it is fast and simple so that even people who are starting to use slack and are not that skillful with the digital world can learn who to use it pretty fast.
5. Even though it is an expensive product, Slack is worth the investment.
6. Slack is built around a channel format that allows you to quickly go from asynchronous to synchronous communication. When it matters, the real-time response cannot be undervalued, but 7. Slack¿s highly customizable notifications allow you to jump in and out when you¿re needed.
8. The numerous integrations give companies another distinctive reason to choose Slack for their needs.
