I have formed good relationships with many translators and PMs there with whom I have collaborated. It has made my life as a freelancer so easy and I'm really grateful to it.
Customer service and dispute is done via e-mail and not a dispute platform which is not easy. There is risk to get paid if customer decided not to pay.
SmartCat has a very good tracking payment system. This feature makes me manage my tasks a lot easier because I can not remember all my orders and outstanding payments.
Too many confusing figures when showing number of words, money to receive and the total lack of dates.
The very kind and responsible support team as well as best user friendly interface ever seen.
We had a major problem when I inserted a IDML file there were parts from the text were not included in SmartCat and the translator had to do it out of SmartCat.
I have to say that SmartCAT is a very good alternative. It's functional, it's user friendly and it's mostly free.
Smartcat is one of these as you may see it struggling on less powerful devices. Its functionality is barbarically limited and there is no personalisation option.
It's quite easy to configure and has a very useful CLI, which is super helpful since we can also easily integrate in our CI/CD pipeline. The documentation is also very well built.
Can be very slow sometimes, has very limited functionality for searching terms, no filtering options, no real TM management.
Great translation experience as a translator, it's really fun to see how translation work quickly propagates into a running product and improves users' experience.
The main thing I dislike is that any word is counted as many times as there are languages for its project, even if it's not translated into some of them. That seriously affects our word limit.
When we had a quality-issue with one of the external translators, the Transifex team helped us to solve it quickly and professionally. Very happy with that kind of service from a SaaS company.
We have stopped adding more of our product portfolio in to this system.
Integrating with Transifex is an ease and the online tools are quite easily the best in its class. The CLI utility makes it easy to build and integrate into any toolchain.
The project setup is quite complicated and hidden deep inside the tool which makes it hard to find.
Sven: Hey, I'm Sven. I'm a teacher and I also work as a freelance translator and I'm reviewing Smartcat today, which I'll gladly give five out of five stars. For more reviews like this, click below. Before stumbling across Smartcat I was heavily looking into it's called [inaudible 00:00:18] from [inaudible 00:00:19] and English. And what I didn't like about it was that at the time it was a physical software, I had to buy to install on one device. And I really like the fact that Smartcat is an online version, like it lives in your browsers that can just use it anywhere, on any device. One of the main reasons I chose Smartcat is, as I mentioned before, the web browser versions that I could just use it anywhere. But also what I really like is I can set it up as a translator and say, "I want this amount of money per word translated.' And what Smartcat does, excuse me, it adds a fraction that they're going to make on top of it. So, the customer see exactly what they have to pay, while I also get exactly what I set out to get. So, if I say I want to get like four cents a word, that's what I'll get. And the customer will know upfront that they'll have to pay, let's say 4.3 cents per word and I like that transparency. Because I work as a freelance translator, I'm a solo company like in that aspect of my life. So, onboarding was super easy. I didn't have to set up anything except for my own account. I had to add some certification to prove that I actually can translate and beyond that, it was just getting started, getting your first clients, and doing a good job because your clients can review you and just getting good reviews naturally leads to getting more clients. If you're considering starting out with Smartcat, I highly advise you to get a professional picture of yourself taken because you want to come across as confident and competent. And then I would say, start out with some of the lower wage jobs, just to get your feet wet. And if you do a good job, you'll get good reviews and then you can slowly start working towards the pay you think you deserve for your work.
