Autodesk Fusion Overview:

### Key takeaways

Insights from verified Capterra reviews

Autodesk Fusion (formerly Fusion 360) supports product design and manufacturing workflows for engineering and design teams. It helps move from concept to prototype with integrated CAD, CAM, and simulation tools. Reviewers highlight its 3D modeling depth and cloud collaboration, but cite performance and licensing issues. Recent updates include parametric text tools and GPU-based simulation. Advanced features like generative design and lifecycle management support high-precision work.

### Our verdict

Autodesk Fusion suits teams that need integrated design-to-manufacturing workflows and value cloud-based collaboration. Its modeling and simulation depth supports complex projects, but buyers should weigh performance and licensing trade-offs. Frequent updates make it a practical choice for iterative development.

Autodesk Fusion’s entry-level plan is priced at $85 per user, per month, or $680 billed annually. Each license is tied to one user and email, no seat sharing.  Add-on extensions range from $495 to $2,190 annually, depending on functionality.

For context, SMBs in the manufacturing category typically budget around $242 per user, per month for software. Autodesk Fusion’s base price is notably higher, especially when simulation or lifecycle tools are added.

Absolutely great! In my opinion, its the best CAD out there! I can easily build whatever I want, and animate and render it too! Plus its safe, and easy to manage what ive built. Support is also great, helpful and honest.

Pros

Im kindof a beginner with CAD, and this is crazy! its super easy for me to make anything i want, i can use all i need for free, and it just keeps getting better!

Cons

I find that, even with a high end pc workstation, it still freezes sometimes for no reason, but thats minor!

I am using student version as given by my college, the overall experience is very good. This software actually helped me in building my projects since my 1st year of college. Honestly this is one of the best software I have ever used.

Pros

I really liked this software, here I made many project designs such as my robo soccer bot design. I made my robo soccer bot complete design on fusion then using the dxf files for laser cutting to make the final robot. It actually helped me in making many designs for my patent proposals, lab submissions, projects and much more. I am now working on a FPV drone design on Fusion and I wish this project to be successfull too. Earlier I made my robo race bot designed on fusion. I made many 3d printed components made on fusion, even a medical box for delivery robot project. I even made a cycle design, and many more like that. Fusion gave me best experience a beginer and brought me to intermediate level. I hope to more better with this software.

Cons

There are not generally any problems but sometimes it lags while using some complex commands. sometimes while using extrude command immediate after using pattern command, the software slows down due to so much processing at once. To save a file we need to connect online otherwise the file can't be saved.

A versatile tool that can do it all. Very powerful CAD software with unlimited possibilities as long as you are willing to put in the time to learn.

Pros

Very flexible, can do everything from creating P&ID, to designs for 3D printing, to simulations for modelling new processes.

Cons

Steep learning curve to begin with due to high number of features, requires a lot of tutorials and time spent on the job learning.

I began using Fusion in school for CAD coursework. Learning felt a little overwhelming but impressive at first, but guided lessons helped. Now, as an Assembly and Maintenance Engineer, Fusion is part of my daily work. It helps me design, troubleshoot assemblies. The simulation tool prevent error. Overall, Fusion is a simple tool to use

Pros

The cloud based feature makes Fusion a game changer, providing no worries about losing files because they are stored in the cloud. The real-time collaboration feature makes designing within my team much smoother and efficient, allowing us to work on projects simultaneously without version conflicts.

Cons

I am quite satisfied with fusion, but the only downside is the hardware requirement for a high quality rendering.

The application works spectacularly for CAD modeling of just about any part; and 3D modeling for 3D printing is great through this software.

Pros

The CAD modeling is very in-depth, and you can make just about anything all within one piece of software.

Cons

I highly dislike the price and pricing model AutoDesk implements for their products.

I have since stopped using other design programs, as autodesk make it really easy to contain all of my needs in one program, from creating circuits to have manufactured, to 3d printing designs.

Pros

Fusion includes an extensive range of features, that you can seamlessly take from a sketch and realise as a product to be manufactured. These include: Sheet metal designs, 3d renderings, PCB designs and many more. The user friendly interface makes Fusion an absolute joy to use. The pricing plan makes in perfect for the at home hobbyist, student or the engineering professional.

Cons

There were few drawbacks, although I can imagine from an educators perspective, a teacher having to get all of their pupils to sign up to fusion may be an issue.

I found fusion less intimidating and more user friendly

It's been great and it's such an easy product to use and Autodesk is always working to improve the software and add new features. Because of that it tends to be ahead of the curve in making it easy to design and program parts to be made.

Pros

It's easy to learn and a powerful solution that is integral to our machine shop.

Cons

Nothing really other than machine posts for the CAM part of Fusion could be easier to work with. That said, Autodesk's support and 3rd party support makes it easy to solve those challenges.

Alternatives considered

Reasons for choosing Autodesk Fusion

Ease of use and built-in CAM/post processors are more powerful and cost effective.

## FAQs

The main drawbacks of Autodesk Fusion (formerly Fusion 360) include performance slows with large files, occasional bugs, and a steep learning curve for advanced features. Its subscription pricing can be high for freelancers, and cloud dependency means offline access is limited for some workflows.

Fusion 360 and AutoCAD serve different purposes. Fusion 360 is built for 3D modeling and manufacturing, while AutoCAD focuses on 2D drafting. Fusion 360 suits product design workflows; AutoCAD remains the standard for architectural and engineering documentation.

Fusion 360 is worth learning for those in product design or manufacturing. It combines CAD, CAM, and CAE tools in one platform and supports cloud collaboration. Its free version for students and hobbyists makes it accessible for early learners and personal projects.

Fusion 360 offers better value for small teams with its cloud-based tools and integrated CAM. SolidWorks suits complex assemblies and enterprise use. Fusion 360 scores 4.5/5 on Capterra, slightly below SolidWorks at 4.6/5, but remains competitive for SMBs.

Engineers use both tools depending on their needs. Fusion 360 is favored for 3D modeling and manufacturing, while AutoCAD is used for 2D drafting and documentation. Many firms use both, AutoCAD for plans and Fusion 360 for prototyping and simulation.

SketchUp is easier for beginners, especially for quick architectural models. Fusion 360 has a steeper learning curve but offers more precise tools for engineering and manufacturing. For detailed mechanical design, Fusion 360’s complexity is often necessary.

Fusion 360 isn’t optimized for architectural design. It lacks BIM tools and wall-based modeling features found in Revit or ArchiCAD. While it can model structures, it’s better suited for mechanical components and product development.

Inventor handles complex assemblies and offline workflows. Fusion 360 offers integrated CAD/CAM/CAE and cloud collaboration. Fusion 360 is more affordable and flexible for SMBs, whereas Inventor is often used in enterprise engineering environments.

Yes, Fusion 360 can import SketchUp (.skp) files. Geometry transfers well, but textures and scenes may not. Simplifying models before import helps reduce cleanup time and ensures smoother editing within Fusion 360.

Fusion 360 requires an internet connection for full functionality, especially for cloud saves and collaboration. Some tools work offline, but users may face limitations with file access, updates, and simulation features when disconnected.
