Carestream Dental was our very first experience using a digital model scanner for our office, so it is not the first one that was offered to us, but it was the first scanner for digital models that our office tried. The reasons we chose Carestream Dental is at an orthodontic trade show the owners were very friendly, personable. They were down to earth and more of a startup business, and that was appealing to us as a small business as well. They were also quite a bit less expensive than one of the other major brands of scanners. The process of working it with our printer was also appealing. We were able to get a printer, a digital printer that works super well with the program, and we are able to export all of the models that we need to do and to show in our practice management software, super easy. Those are some of the reasons that we chose Carestream Dental. Carestream Dental was really easy to set up. They actually provided our office with a laptop that was pre-programmed with the software we needed and the equipment was already installed in it. That made it really easy to go almost out of the box. It was really easy to integrate with any other things that we used, including the viewing software that was installed, so we could use the images provided by the scanner on other computers in our office fairly easily. Some considerations in using Carestream Dental is that we've had a hit and miss relationship with their customer service. Sometimes it's very easy to get through to customer service, and other times you can be stuck with a patient in the chair and not be able to get through to anybody for maybe an hour. That's sort of a problem if you have somebody in the chair. But for the most part, we've found their software support especially helpful. One of the issues that we've had has to be that the equipment that they make has a bend in the wire the way it's used and it can cause shorts in the handle, and they don't currently have a fix for it. So if you get a short in your handle, your equipment will fail and you have to replace the whole unit and you can't just replace where the cord goes into the unit. That was a problem for our office. The other problem, some offices might not know about considering using Carestream Dental is that, even though it is an excellent quality image and model image that you get that will work with almost every model company or fabrication of appliances that you need to use, unfortunately it does not work with Invisalign. Invisalign, that company will not take these scans from Carestream. It is a bit disappointing for us because we believe that Carestream Dental does have a great product and should be able to be used by Invisalign. I have stated my complaint to Invisalign several times about that.
