Capterra Glossary

CMYK (Sometimes YMCK or “Process Color Printing”)

CMYK is often referred to by other names but simply refers to the colors Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (or sometimes Key) when used during printing. In this type of printing, known as process color printing, these four standard inks are mixed during the printing process to create the desired color effects. Alternatively, spot color printing uses premixed inks that are used as is or mixed prior to printing.

What Small and Midsize Businesses Need to Know About CMYK (Sometimes YMCK or “Process Color Printing”)

SMBs typically rely on CMYK to create print marketing materials and many opt to print the materials themselves to save on the costs associated with third-party printers. Understanding the differences between process color printing and spot color printing can allow SMBs to more efficiently purchase printing equipment and ink to produce their desired effects when printing.
