Federated Identity Management

Federated Identity Management

Federated identity management (FIM) is a system that allows for the identification of information to be shared across entities and trust domains. With FIM, users at separate enterprises can use the same identity data, including names, pictures, and badges, to access apps, software, and other resources. Each enterprise maintains its system, but all the systems are interlinked through an identity provider that stores all access credentials and serves as the authentication gatekeeper.

What Small and Midsize Businesses Need to Know About Federated Identity Management

A federated identity management might be useful for an SMB if they have a sister company or use contracted employees or consultants because data can flow between the two entities easily. An example of this is linked login credentials that can be used across multiple systems. Businesses benefit from this system because it saves time by giving employees the proper access to the right systems in a safe, secure, and efficient manner.
