FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard set of communication rules for how computers transfer files over the Internet. A Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) standard includes rules permitting confirmed users to log onto a network to transfer files, list directories, delete and rename files. Users can also upload files and share with others through a unique link to the files through FTP.

What Small and Midsize Businesses Need to Know About FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

FTP is one of the simplest and oldest ways to transfer large numbers of web server files but has become less common with the advent of cloud storage and computing. As a client-server model, FTP uses separate connections between the client (laptop, computer, smartphone, tablet, etc.) and the server. Businesses can use FTP to send files between computers or websites and to upload and download files on their web servers. SMBs may be more likely to use FTP because it’s a less costly option than cloud computing.
