Extensible Markup Language (XML)

An extensible markup language (XML) is a set of rules for encoding documents in a human-readable and machine-readable format. The WIPO Standard ST.96 and several other related standards define it, with continuous maintenance by ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC34—the ISO committee responsible for standardization in this area; see also Internationalization & Localization: Standards. While the design of XML focuses on documents, it is widely used for serializing structured data as well.

What Small and Midsize Businesses Need to Know About Extensible Markup Language (XML)

XML has many uses for small businesses, especially those that rely on data. Primarily, it allows for structured tagging, making data easier to manage and process—especially helpful for companies that keep track of large amounts of information. Many tools now support XML and allow for easy data transfer between applications. Additionally, XML supports reuse to create templates for commonly used data structures, saving businesses time and money.
