And with Master Packager even free version (not trial) has a lot to offer. Ease of use (interface is simple to navigate around) and one specific feature (custom actions like "Copy to UserProfile") make all the difference when doing typical app customization. Adding Master Wrapper (GUI for PSADT) to the mix and this becomes a killer combo. Cons Nothing. So far I've been a happy user of Master Packager. I will recommend any time I'm asked for an opinion on packaging tool options. Pros Lightweight and Packaging engineer focused, it is clearly built by people that know what a packager needs. It doesn't include endless bloat that a packager would rarely, if ever, use. In addition to Packager, the standard suite also includes Re-packager, Wrapper, and Toolbox which all provide genuinely useful added functionality. The free version is excellent and is far more powerful and useful than Orca or Insted it, but the Pro or Service Provider license gives you pretty much everything that a packaging engineer needs to create automated application deployments for a Modern Desktop. If you use PSADT, Master Wrapper which is part of the Master Packager suite of tools, is the best GUI I've seen for it. The license models allow a licensed packager free rein to install the software (current versions available for direct download or from WinGet) on any device they need it on, without limit. Cons No major cons, though doesn't include a COM capture when importing individual files, which is, to be fair, an action packagers rarely need to do anymore. Can get around, if required, by using Re-packager 'capture' or the built in register dll custom actions. Review Source JB Jean-Luc B. SOE Engineer Information Technology and Services Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Great product for difficult applications" May 3, 2024 5.0 Pros Master packager provides an amazing tool for packaging or repackaging applications which we would otherwise be unable to maintain in our environment. Particularly difficult applications which install many sub-applications which don't clean themselves up properly when the main application is uninstalled are easily managed by repackaging as an MSI using Master Packager. They've done a great job at creating a product to assist roles like mine Cons Considering the issue that it resolves, any minor issues are easily looked over. Particularly when repacking an application as an MSI, there's no way to return to previous screens to start over, you have to fully close it and reopen it. Otherwise no real issues. If you find the need to start repackaging again we suggest setting the Virtual Machine to a clean state and start the repackaging process again. We then purchased a license to obtain the repackaging functionality and have been happy with the results. Now our whole team use it and it’s the product we recommend to others when looking for a packaging tool. It’s also handy for those that don’t know PowerShell to be able to knock up a PSADT script. Pros I really appreciate the clean simple interface and how many time saving features there are included. For example the templates feature for being able to apply common standards, properties, or custom actions, and the ability to run powershell scripts. One of the most unique features is the ability to apply files and/or registry values to all users on the system, removing the need to set up self-repair or active setup to achieve this. Cons I still use InstEd a lot for the following reasons:- Faster startup time- Faster table navigation- Ability to open up multiple packages in tabs- Ability to diff 2 MSI packagesI may ditch it altogether if MP were to improve in these areas! Reason for choosing Master Packager AdminStudio has not added much useful new functionality to their product, keep adding bloatware for unwanted features, and upping their prices.Advanced Installer is nice, but more targeted at developers rather than enterprise MSI tweakers / repackagers.The others had various flaws, less functionality, or higher costs compared to MP. Pros The best part is the ease of use. It makes editing and even examining MSI files so much easier and faster but without compromising on quality. It does everything far more expensive products do and has some features they don't have. It's very much quality not quantity. Cons Just one thing - it offers regular updates but there's no way to enable auto-update - you are sent to the website to download the new version. I have a fondness for PowerShell, automation and application packaging. I have tried all sorts of packaging tools in my pursuit for the ultimate fit .Master packager checked off all the boxes for me.I never knew of all the automation possibilities that are available within an msi until taking the Master Packager Pro training course. Master Packager is super easy to learn, very intuitive with a great UI and their training has taken me to the next level of packaging software . \[sensitive content hidden\] are seasoned pro’s and their tips and tricks they shared will be making my job as a packager a lot easier. I highly recommend taking their course Pros The user interface is very intuitive and the validation automation is spot on.I like all of the predefined custom actions as they focus in on what a packager would need to know to get the job done for those tricky packages Cons Not many cons to list here that I have seen. Make no mistake, this is the only \*other\* Enterprise grade packaging tool at a fraction of the price. As a MSP, we are looking for ways to reduce price to our customers, and improve efficiency. And Master Packager helps us achieve this through useful features including Master Wrapper, built in script editor, and built in custom actions to eliminate the need for Active Setup. I like how Master Packager are active in the community, and take on feedback from other packaging professionals around the world to constantly improve their product. Being able to create response transforms, convert PSADT to .intunewin, import ODBC data, import shortcut icon files without the need for additional tools makes reduces a lot of time and greatly improves efficiency. Cons I would like you to add the ability to conflict manage packages. Reason for choosing Master Packager Advanced Installer was complete rubbish, and not even up to the standard of AdminStudio. Principal Engineer Computer Games Used the software for: Less than 6 months ### "Master Packager Makes MSI Creation Easy" July 6, 2023 4.0 We have a homebrew app we need to distribute to 400+ employees through some administrative process. IT did not want a plain exe or zip. It was difficult to find any decent, and inexpensive, app to help author an MSI, but the free version of Master Packer was not only exactly what I needed, but was easy to use too. If we use this for more than this one app I'll be sure to get a full version! Pros Easy to add a working folder as a source for cab building. Pretty straight forward configuration for most things I wanted to accomplish. Cons Updating files was complicated. UI didn't offer help for what certain options meant - tooltips or help panel would be great. I couldn't find any documentation on use, and wouldn't have guessed how to use the Custom Action conditions - a drop down would have been super. Pros It is very easy to use. All the functionality works with no issues and makes packagers life more easier when it comes to repackage executable or investigate an issue to identify why application is not running or what was missed from capturing an executable.
