We are doing technical docs for hardware, often on very tight deadlines - late strings block launches.With ModelFront we reduced turnaround times per project from about 2 weeks to 3 days.Not sure if it matters but we’re using WorldServer.

Pros

Faster turnaround time and more control - we can dial the savings vs quality to target a specific quality or a specific budget.Before ModelFront, we were getting a marginal benefit from PEMT vs translating from scratch, even though we had really good custom MT.

Cons

Quality prediction was not well explained upfront - the cost savings seemed a little bit too good to be true, and it was not super clear how much time savings we would get.I had to work to get around the suspicions from my team, and to explain to the possibilities to my stakeholders, who mostly care about time, not cost. Even after a case study it was hard to show the ROI.We only saw the time savings after we started.

Our product catalog is updating and growing and we're also adding new languages. We just couldn't deliver the expected quality at the expected speed on that volume of new words. (Price was not much of a consideration at the time we started, now in the current economy it is.) We divided the products and languages into tiers 1-4 but that only takes you so far and totally raw MT has problems.With ModelFront we are able to basically target our linguist effort where it needs to go, not perfectly but in a different league than what we were doing before or what I've seen in previous jobs.In the end our budget actually grew slightly, but we deliver four times more volume now, with roughly the same quality as before for the original languages (tier 1 and 2), and a slightly lower quality for some of the new market languages.At this point, we could never go back to manually checking every single segment for all languages and products for no clear quality benefit. Of course product catalogs are a relatively niche domain and high volume, your mileage may vary.

Pros

Immediate savings - We got direct savings right away and we could keep our existing setup - the TMS, MT and vendors. It's a lot simpler than MT in terms of customizing and maintaining it for multiple languages and multiple TMs.Unlike most l10n technology purchase decisions, this one is kind of a no-brainer.

Cons

TMS integration - We had to wait a few months before starting, because, although we finished the case study in a few weeks, the Memsource integration was not ready. Not sure if it was Memsource or ModelFront.Also my linguist team was pretty scared at first about AI replacing some of their work.

We built a system to monitor content (e.g. academic fraud), and the content we monitor comes in more languages than just English, so we need to translate at scale (millions of sentences), and we don't have millions of dollars, so we need to use raw machine translation, but can't rely on it without a quality score.

Pros

API access and language coverage, including those with exotic writing systems. Unlike translation providers like Microsoft or Google, ModelFront's quality prediction even has full support for customization for niche pairs like Armenian to Swahili.Developer support has also been good, and \[sensitive content hidden\] and the team can answer my questions as an NLP researcher.

Cons

It's a bit expensive for the use cases I need
