August 15, 2025 5.0 Their services, products and dedicated support team have made my experience with ExpiWell go smoothly and well without significant issues. I was able to perform data collection in the participants' natural setting on their everyday life's technology use, although this is my first experience with using both the method and the apps! Pros ExpiWell has enabled me to do my first research on information technology use in everyday life. Their apps work well on different platforms, including iOS and Android, and are easy to use. Not to mention the pricing they set up for graduate students, which allows me to use my research grants to cover the subscription to the apps. Their support team is excellent, too, as my questions were responded to promptly and always with the solutions that I was looking for! Cons The subscription may have to serve the needs of different settings, such as volume-based or per-use, rather than time-based subscriptions. The team was consistently responsive, easy to work with, and proactive — the platform was straightforward to navigate, support was always helpful, and their regular check-ins made nothing feel too hard. This is definitely my EMA platform of choice. Pros ExpiWell made it easy to deliver our FND study EMA protocol with personalised scheduling and reminders, which reduced our team’s admin load. The real-time compliance monitoring gave us confidence in the data and cut down on participant dropouts. Also it's super intuitive and easy to use! Cons As a team based outside the US, the main challenge was pricing — currency conversion pushed costs higher for us — but it’s the price of a solid EMA tool, and still very competitive compared to other similar (and even less capable) platforms. Otherwise, everything was manageable and worked well for our team and participants. The data seems to be clearly collected, and the skip logic seems to work really well. Cons I think some small things bother me, and maybe it is because I don't fully know how to use, but I simetimes wished I could choose what people see on the screen (like display two questions that are on a sliding scale on the same page, or have another option other than either matrix or drop down for multiple options - these are highly specific and I don't think I am explaining it well so happy to try again) and be able to download all the surveys into one excell other than separate excell sheets based on the different kinds of surveys. Pros Easy to use and quick service support are the features I like the most about ExpiWell. Cons The functionality of the APP is not stable (especially in the Android system), as reported by my participants. As you may know from my email, many of my participants reported that they were unable to successfully use the APP while participating in my project (i.e., the APP quit unexpectedly, they were unable to click on the options in the APP, the wrong question item appeared in the APP). Although the problems were solved after reporting them to the support system, some unexpected errors in the operation of the APP just keep occurring. This problem definitely affects my study process. Associate Professor Higher Education Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Unique set of features" March 22, 2023 5.0 Pros We needed an experience sampling survey platform that would let us send multiple daily notifications to participants AND could prompt users to upload videos. Some other survey software out there lets users upload images/videos as attachments, but the process is really clunky. Expiwell is a much more seamless experience for video uploads, and works on both Android/iOS phones. We had a brief outage where videos weren't uploading, and the Expiwell customer service team was incredibly responsive in troubleshooting and resolving the problem. Cons ExpiWell isn't as full featured as something like Qualtrics that has been around forever and is used in a lot of ways. Some aspects of the participant enrollment process are a bit quirky—it's not as easy as sending someone to a URL. Cons The price is a bit high if you want to use some functions that are required in research. There are some bugs occasionally, e.g., participants did not receive the survey, the app said you have not responded to a question even though you have already done, and the pop up of choices for grid question disappear quickly when you move your smartphone. October 27, 2025 4.0 Overall I had a pretty good experience with ExpiWell. There are some kinks to hammer out still, but it gets the job done. Pros I liked how responsive they were and how they were always willing to work with my specific situations. Their online support guide was also very useful when it came to setting up my study and building my surveys. I also appreciated that they provided discounts for PhD students. Cons Creating the surveys was not always the most seamless experience. It was sometimes glitchy, and I would have trouble sometimes with special formatting. For example, piped text would sometimes look off. I also felt like, while a nice option, the grid question format did not look right if the grid was too large, which made me have to think of creative workarounds. I also encountered some issues with notifications working properly on Android. I definitely recommend ExpiWell to anyone conducting ESM or EMA research. Pros I'm truly grateful for ExpiWell. I've been searching for a platform for my experience sampling study for a long time, and I've never come across a user-friendly platform like ExpiWell. Most platforms require coding (and not easy, intuitive coding) or a significant investment just to send survey links via text message. Even if you're willing to spend money, managing survey schedules and tracking them becomes a huge burden. I really appreciate ExpiWell for its simplicity and effectiveness in scheduling surveys and sending notifications. Participants also found the ExpiWell app straightforward and easy to use. Cons I think the survey features could be improved (e.g., allowing variable naming, recoding values). I also encountered some challenges with participants not receiving notifications, although I believe this may be due to issues on the participants' end. The data doesn't come in a format ready for direct use in SPSS or R because it lacks variable names. It was a quick fix for me, but if I had more questions or surveys it could have been more challenging. Staff responds to emails in a timely manner and is easy to work with. The app itself is intuitive to use as well. Most of my participants have been going through the study without any major issues. Will continue to use it for my research. Pros Expiwell seems to be a platform that is carefully designed for intensive data capturing. Easy-to-use and things make sense. Most of the things that you'd like to do as a researcher are incorporated. Cons The only small downside is that it is only possible to download data separately for each survey (that is, you CAN download everything at once, but they come in separate excel files for each survey). Makes it a little tedious to integrate data together, but I do see that it might be difficult to handle downloading all data into one excel file.
