October 13, 2025 5.0 With tariff schedules in full swing and no sign of calming down, I thought it would be a good idea to get proactive in alternative supply sourcing while I still have another year of material surplus to go on. The plan was to circumvent wholesalers in the US and go direct to source, and boy I learned a few things along the way. Once I was able to track wholesale inflows for the specific material categories I required (super easy with the visual flow breakdowns in ImportYeti) I grabbed contact info from the import manifest details on a few listings that had WhatsApp numbers. This led me to discover that A LOT of the large US wholesalers actually create front companies within the countries where their primary supplier is to mask the source and act as a gatekeeper for people attempting to circumvent them! With the help of Meta's Llama and X's Grok however, I was able to scrape Instagram and X posts to match WhatsApp numbers to accounts, and discovered one linked on South American Instagram servers. After digging into the company, it turns out they are the 2nd largest exporter of the product I was looking for in that country, and they actually had a low enough MOQ that made it feesible for a sole-prop like me to actually order. I was pretty skeptical initially demoing the service that it could be of use to such a tiny one-man business like mine, but through Dave's (founder of ImportYeti) generous offer to let me try out full-featured access for a week, but with a little creative engineering on my part it will likely turn out to cut my future supply costs down by about 1/3rd! I can't imagine the savings a SMB could get utilizing the data running trend analysis, incorporating LLMs in to the API, etc. Dave is also extremely responsive, helpful, and encouraging...how many businesses do you work with where the owner actually replies to you without boilerplate? Highly recommended! Pros It provides enough relevent info to gain highly useful insight about supplier networks, MOQ estimates, who major players are in a field based on inflow/outflow, who their primary retail customers are, etc. It also helped my realize tactics used by companies to "mask" their primary source from competitors. Cons Did not always incorporate contact details in profiles, or contact detail relevence was outdated, might be a good idea to set up bots to auto verify info by sending mock quote requests to the numbers/emails or something. One difficulty I faced was finding the same supplier listed under multiple names, which affects search results—though you can resolve this by using filters; it just takes a bit more effort. If there were a way to consolidate information for the same company when it appears under various different names, that would be a huge help! I couldn't have done my research without the support of ImportYeti and would recommend it to anyone in academia, industry, or government interested in learning about how our supply chains operate - from supply chain resiliency to risk diversification to predictive forecasting of supply chain bottlenecks, you can use ImportYeti to make those strategy and critical decisions for your organization. Pros There are so many things to like about ImportYeti including but not limited to: - The data is constantly updated (every two weeks or so, I think) - The user interface is generally easy to use and navigate - The power query feature makes it easy to find exactly the data that you are looking for - They have an API to systematically query the data (although I have not used it yet) Cons A few minor issues with the platform (which the ImportYeti team is quick to respond to any requests for help): - Downloading data is clunky (my version restricted downloads to 25,000 rows at a time) - Power query can be buggy at times requiring multiple tries to get the exact right query I'm looking for (could just be user error on my end!) Further, it's very useful to get a ballpark sense of peer and competitor purchase frequencies and amounts. Lastly, as I write this review in March of 2025 where global tariff policies are changing daily, I can only imagine how much ImportYeti will help as we all try to adjust our sourcing strategies. Pros I'm not sure how I stumbled upon ImportYeti, yet it's been by far the most helpful resource I've found for identifying who the go-to manufacturers are in the industry that I'm entering. Furthermore, depending on how you structure your profile company/product research, you can pretty easily identify which producers are making premium goods versus lower tier/cost products. Cons I think this is just the nature of inconsistent data categorization and input at the point of shipping, but I still needed to do a bit of internet sleuthing when really trying to narrow in on product subcategories and figure out what's actually been shipped (e.g. "leather goods" to belts or bag straps). Either way, I don't really think that's an ImportYeti issue, but rather a data collection issue.
