### "Somewhat satisfied"

March 25, 2024

5.0

I’m still a relatively new user, but so far I’m underwhelmed with the analytics side of things. With my previous platform, I was able to easily track number of opens by email and by subscriber (for free). I now pay for analytics that are not as good. The Buttondown platform is easy to use, which is great, but may not make up for the analytics.

Pros

I like how easy Buttondown was to set up and start sending emails.

Cons

Tracking engagement was pretty much nonexistent until I upgraded my account. Even now, the analytics aren’t great.

Alternatives considered

Reason for choosing Buttondown

I wanted to try something new. I’ve used MailChimp before and didn’t love it.

### "Easy to use, great value"

February 24, 2024

5.0

Pros

The setup is very easy and there are more technical options for the experienced to get your newsletter looking fab. The pricing is VERY generous too especially for non-profits.

Cons

Some of the documentation is a little dated but they are working on updating the text. It took me a bit to figure out how to setup my custom send domain.

### "Perfect Tool for Authors"

January 26, 2024

5.0

Pros

Buttondown is easy to get started with and supports the integrations an author needs to be a successful indie publisher.

Cons

Setting up a custom domain could have been simpler, but I got it working quickly.

Reason for choosing Buttondown

Better interface, more features, better support.

### "Solid newsletter provider for the price"

June 7, 2023

3.0

Pros

Buttondown is, for the most part, a great product...and I think it's pretty hard to beat for the price. I also like that the team really encourages users to get in touch with them if they need to. I also love composing emails in Markdown.

Cons

The UI is buggy enough that it seriously detracts from my overall experience. There's often substantial lag, and it's often hard to tell if an operation completed or not (it gets stuck in a loading state, but sometimes the operation went through, or partially went through, and sometimes it didn't).

Switched from

[Mailchimp](https://www.capterra.com/p/110228/MailChimp/)

For the number of users I needed, Mailchimp was too expensive for my business.

### "Buttondown combines simplicity and powerful features to be a powerful email marketing platform"

October 2, 2023

5.0

Fantastic tool, I'm slowly migrating all of my email marketing needs over to this platform, and it's been great to see it grow and develop over the years.

Pros

\+ Easy to implement+ Simple yet powerful features like automation+ Wide range of subscription methods, including API+ Amazing support from the team

Cons

\+ No a 'block builder' type interface for creating your content (but to be honest, I prefer this, as it keeps things really simple!, and it does support HTML and Markdown if you want to create something detailed!)

### "good service"

February 4, 2024

4.0

Pros

it is easy to use, satisfying, and simple, with a focused product and no thrills. it does what you want it to do, without interfering or offering obstacles. the easy of use is high, the output as is you want it to be.

Cons

the pricing structure meant that I could not create two newsletters without paying a higher payment plan, despite both newsletters having a small audience. this was frustrating.

Reason for choosing Buttondown

simplicity, function, pricing, recommendation.

### "Good product friendly people"

January 30, 2024

4.0

Ok. Not long enough to have a clear idea. It is better than the two programs I used before, both of which turned newsletter writing into a a real chore.

Pros

Pricing and the promise of simplicity. Writing newsletters is a necessary evil for me. So I do it but want it easy

Cons

That big long page for setting up stuff. I had to watch videos and check help to know what to do.

### "Does everything I need (and more)"

June 11, 2023

5.0

Buttondown makes it simple and fun to write, send, and manage my newsletter, especially given privacy-first practice.

Pros

Simple, beautiful interface. Powerful features. Supportive and enthusiastic founder. Easy for me to use as a privacy-first company.

Cons

The only reason I might not use Buttondown in the future is it doesn't have the user base that, say, Substack has. However, this is only if I need to use a platform, as opposed to a tool.

### "The Joy of Newslettering"

May 17, 2023

Extremely positive.

Pros

Setting everything up, linking my website, sorting out DNS, making tweaks. Attention to detail throughout, from the tint colour picker to the layout of the settings page.

Cons

No cons. Buttondown is the best at what it does, and it makes writing a newsletter a pleasure.

### "Email list without headaches or bloated features you don't need"

May 23, 2023

5.0

Pros

Buttondown is simple and not a mega VC-backed email company (like Mailchimp, Substack, etc.) that does exactly what I need: create a subscription list, send emails, and give ability to upgrade to premium subscribers.

Cons

The paid subscribers flow is a bit tricky and cumbersome, but the developer is extremely helpful.

### "Just right for my customers"

July 5, 2023

5.0

From setup to now, two years later, I've had great support from a great product. I've used it with two different companies and it's been no problem both times.

Pros

Unlike most email newsletter services, Buttondown's web application is fast and lightweight instead of slow and heavy (cough cough MailChimp). I've never had a problem with customers failing to receive my newsletters.

Cons

The analytics occasionally trigger ad blockers, but my paying customers don't seem to mind.

### "Enough features, no bloat"

August 16, 2023

5.0

As a new user, my experience will be somewhat skewed, but overall great! I can send emails without jumping through a lot of hoops and can play around with new features as I go. It's the perfect platform for a microbusiness like me.

Pros

Buttondown was recommended to me by a friend as a straightforward, no-frills service. It's straightforward, and thankfully yes. And I don't have to wade through features that I don't need. Are there frills? Definitely, and they're the ones that a solopreneur like me actually needs.

Cons

There are a few things (e.g. setting up the CSS) that I wouldn't try on my own. I'd need to get someone with more technical knowledge to be comfortable doing some of those bits.

Reason for choosing Buttondown

A personal recommendation combined with comparison against competitor platforms, combined with a reasonable price, and most importantly, great customer support.

### "The better newsletter choice"

October 21, 2023

5.0

Pros

I moved my well-performing newsletter from a site that was actively promoting hate speech to Buttondown. The move was easy and \[sensitive content hidden\] provided help everywhere I needed it. \[sensitive content hidden\] is super responsive and always gets my issues solved, though it is rare I have any issues at all.

Cons

The interface is maybe less flashy than other sites but it's not actually a problem.

Pros

### "Unbuttoned! "

January 15, 2024

4.0

Pros

It's not Substack and apparently has zero interest in platforming Nazis.

Cons

Formatting. It's 2024: if I cut and paste a poem from a Word doc, it should appear in Buttondown with the same formatting. I had to insert break tags, my first use of HTML since the Naughts.

### "Easy, affordable, and reliable"

January 12, 2024

5.0

My overall experience has been very positive. It was easy to get up and running and the support is exceptional.

Pros

I liked the ease with which I was able to get my newsletter up and running. While the tools aren't quite as easy to use as Substack, the product simply \*feels\* like it's made with care. Even system notifications come from the developer's email address, which means that you can reply to anything to get a real person to answer.

Cons

The tools are robust, but not quite as polished as Substack.

### "Easy to use and easy on the wallet"

June 7, 2023

5.0

I run a fairly small list, so my needs are modest. Buttondown is an excellent fit for me. It's much easier to use than Mailchimp, the pricing is reasonable, and there is a lot of functionality I can grow into should my needs expand.

Pros

Buttondown is so simple to use. It doesn't get in the way but still has all the feature I want and more. The support is amazing. It's an incredible product for my use cases.

Cons

Nothing. It does everything I want from it and more.

### "Great for personal site email list"

September 14, 2023

5.0

Overall I've enjoyed the experience of using Buttondown and it has worked great for my use case so far.

Pros

My goal was to find something for a reasonable price point that easily allowed me to use RSS-to-email to echo blog posts I publish on my personal site to readers who want to receive my content via email. Buttondown was very easy to set up and was just what I was looking for.

Cons

One of the only things I've found missing so far is that I'd like an option to go back and schedule posts that were published before setting up Buttondown. With the current feature set, I'd have to set up separate emails manually for those "ignored" emails from before I used the service. A button to draft prior posts into my template would be great.

Reason for choosing Buttondown

Ease of use, external recommendations, specific use-case and automation features

### "Great newsletter tool"

August 27, 2023

5.0

Overall it's good! Once I figure out workarounds for styling issues, I schedule my posts and can forget about it because I know it will be taken care of.

Pros

Ease of setting up, adding custom branding colors and images, and excellent customer service when I needed assistance setting up my custom domain.

Cons

CSS styling could be better. Some of the styles added are override by Buttondown's style. I have to set specific CSS for those case. Also the preview of the emails (web or mobile) doesn't seem useful as is. Spacing looks fine on the preview but when the email gets sent, it has more narrow spacing. Would be nice if the preview feature was more accurate.

Reason for choosing Buttondown

I wanted to support other one-person businesses and as a software engineer myself, thought this was very cool!

### "simple and effective newsletter"

June 6, 2023

Pros

I'm a science fiction writer who uses Buttondown to publish a newsletter for friends and fans. I appreciate the amount of control that Buttondown gives me over coding and appearance, while still making it easy to do things like add images and recruit new subscribers. I particularly appreciate the way I can swap between composing in basic html, markdown, or via a WYSIWYG editor.

Cons
