We purchased an annual plan for our family and use it with our student, a 4th grader. We assign her skills to complete on IXL and track her progress through the web interface. Sometimes we use the IXL skills breakdown to design our own off-site learning activities and it's helpful to have that data all available in IXL even if we're not doing their activity. Pros It has made our transition from private school to homeschool much smoother than I expected. IXL has standards-aligned activities for core subject areas in every state, which was an important consideration for us as we might be moving in the middle of the year. The activities have the right balance of trying to engage my student but not trying to entertain, which is important because we don't want her to think everything is a game. It's easy to find activities and the standards-alignment for them. The app is very functional and has made getting school done on the go much easier. When we've had questions as we were getting started, we got detailed, helpful responses from customer service. Cons We find it a little tough to find information about how much time she's spending on the platform, and we wish there was a full learning plan aligned specifically to the state we need rather than the grade level in general. There is no standards alignment information for Spanish. It is a great program that doesn't have a lot of "fluff." I started using the benchmark assessment and I'm excited to use the skill recommendations for my students and see how much they grow in their learning. Pros What I like most about IXL is how teachers are able to assign skills based on students needs. It allows for differentiation and is easy to find skills based on Texas standards. I am able to track students learning and help fill in educational gaps. Cons I don't like how students can choose skills from other grade levels. I do wish there was a way to lock out other grade levels unless the teacher has specifically assigned a skill from another grade level. My youngest is enthusiastic about it... for now! Pros Everything is laid out in sections. Skills are easy to find, and the range of ages and abilities catered for is immense. I loved that I could choose the national curriculum for my children. Cons Adding skills to my children's dashboards for them to complete is not an intuitive process. It is not too "game-y." That is good and bad. I like that kids are doing relevant work, especially during centers when I am leading small groups. However, it's not my students favorite app. Possibly the addition of a bit more pizazz (but not too much), could increase the engagement factor for my little ones. I like that kids can also move between and among grade level content. If I have students who still need Pre-K skills, I can put them on that level. Also, if I have students who need practice beyond kindergarten, I call allow them to move on to more challenging skill practice. Overall, I would recommend using IXL in the classroom. Pros My kindergarten students are working through topics that pertain to our learning goals. There is a simple motivational system built in. I can see what my students are doing in real time. I can also analyze their errors to see what confusions I need to address. There is a lot of date available for teachers if you dig into it. Also, I shared it with my families in hopes that kids will do some home learning over the summer. Cons I would like to see the interface updated a bit. I have used IXL for years. It always looks the same. The font size is too small, especially for kindergarten hands using an iPad.
