## What is Linear?

Linear is a project management software for product teams, enabling users to map their product journey from ideation to launch. It offers tools to shape ideas, specify what to build next, and work on proposals in real-time. Users can streamline planning with inline comments, project templates, and text-to-issue commands, seamlessly transitioning between ideation and execution. The Initiatives feature helps coordinate strategic efforts, providing summaries and linking to resources, aligning the organization around the product strategy. It allows users to monitor progress, identifying blockers and missing updates. Linear provides multiple views, including list, board, timeline, and swimlane options, enabling teams to express key information at different levels. Users can create product pipelines, map releases, or visualize project plans on a unified timeline. Its planning, issue tracking, and cycle planning features keep the organization aligned and informed throughout the lifecycle.

## FAQs about Linear

Overview

### What company size and specific industries is Linear built for?

Linear is designed for small to large software development teams, including product managers, project managers, and engineering managers in technology-focused organizations. It is best suited for companies that need a tool for coordinating product work and engineering projects rather than for a specific industry outside software and product development.

Features and Usability

### What are the key features of Linear?

Linear offers issue tracking, planning tools, project management, and product roadmapping for software development teams. It also includes project templates, prioritization, and requirements management, plus collaboration tools and Gantt/timeline view for coordinating work across the product lifecycle.

Pricing

Linear starts at $12 per user per month for the Basic plan, with a free version available. The Business plan costs $18 per user per month and adds Linear Asks, Linear Insights, private teams, guest accounts, triage responsibility, unlimited teams, and Zendesk and Intercom integrations.

Integrations

### Which third-party tools and platforms does Linear integrate with?

Linear connects natively to GitHub, GitLab, Jira, Slack, Raycast, Fivetran, Fillout, and Zapier. These integrations cover software development, team communication, automation, and data sync needs, giving Linear compatibility with a focused set of widely used third-party tools and platforms.

Getting Started and Support

### What customer support options does Linear offer?

Linear provides Email/Help Desk support for customer questions and issues. With no reviewer feedback available on support experience, there is no catalog-backed evidence about response times, helpfulness, or common frustrations. The listed support channel is the only confirmed option in the catalog data.

For our context - ship something real, fast, with a small focused team - Linear is clearly the right move. The speed and product opinion alone justified leaving Jira's configuration sprawl behind. The honest caveat is scope: the moment work stretched into multi-quarter, multi-pod epics with heavy design-engineering handoff, we felt Linear's deliberate simplicity as a constraint rather than a feature. If your work is project-shaped and near-term, it's excellent. If it's portfolio-shaped and long-horizon, you'll want to pair it with something heavier - or accept that handoff context lives outside the tool like we did.

Pros

\*UI/UX and product opinion: Linear has a clear point of view about how teams should work, and it shows. Pages load instantly, keyboard shortcuts are consistent, and the tool gets out of the way of the work instead of demanding ceremony. \* Built for immediate, shippable focus: Cycles are deliberately minimal -set a length, a goal, add issues, ship. For a tightly-scoped four-week push, that lack of overhead is exactly right. \* Roadmap view: Create projects, set target dates, and you get a clean timeline in about ten minutes - no consultant required, unlike Jira's Advanced Roadmaps.

Cons

\* Design to Engg. handoff or cross-discipline epics can be a limitation. Linear shines for a single team on a tight horizon, but for EPICs spanning multiple quarters and several pods/disciplines, the product thins out. It handles a single product team or 5–10 teams well, but cross-team dependencies and resource allocation across quarters are things Linear doesn't try to do. Its roadmaps start to struggle once you have complex cross-team dependencies that need Gantt-style visualization. \* Linear's user roles/permissions is deliberately minimal so that there's no fine-grained action-level permission control. For e.g., you can't scope "who's allowed to mark a task done" to a specific role the way you might want for a multi-pod epic with formal sign-off

Left Jira because over time it had become a feature factory - every option configurable, every workflow a project in itself, and an admin tax just to keep it coherent. The "Jira Admin" had effectively become a full-time role just to stop the workflows collapsing under their own complexity. Linear was the opposite bet: opinionated, fast, and out of the way. It works well with zero configuration where Jira needs weeks of field, workflow, and permission setup.

We first started using Linear after using Jira for a few years. We switched to Confluence as Linear offered a simpler experience, as it wasn't trying to do everything and just seemed more focused.

Pros

Linear helps our team stay aligned on assignments, prioritize tasks effectively, and maintain visibility across projects — reducing bottlenecks and helping us navigate inevitable delays. It enables more focused, productive use of everyone’s time.

Cons

I sometimes wish I could order by different criteria, like latest added, due date, etc. But overall, it doesn't impact productivity.

We decided that Linear was more focused and fit the requirements of what we needed vs. Jira that offered a lot more of what we didn't need.

Overall linear has become an integral part of our team's workflow. The integration with slack makes it easy for even our non-technical people to use.

Pros

Very simple product to use with powerful project management functionality & great integrations.

Cons

Would be nice if they launched more AI functionality to help clean up messy tickets & projects.
