“The Excel plus in (save as noted below) is very helpful and the Presentation Studio allows us to create informative graphs and charts (albeit there is a steep learning curve and it seems to be impossible to change colours of stocks across pages without updating the pages individually; changing it for the "report" does not appear to flow through).“

“Responses to stale data inquiries come too late. When we encounter missing data in Morningstar Direct, we report it to Morningstar immediately. And although a ticket is created right away, the resolution often either comes too late for us to use for any daily reporting OR the notification of resolution comes much later than when the data got fixed (requiring me to have to keep "refreshing" views to see if it has been fixed).“

### "Great tool for an investor or advisor"

July 21, 2026

5.0

I am very happy and satisfied with Direct. I rely on Direct for our fund management, investor's investments screening and portfolio reporting. Direct bring security and reliability that we will not only build and analyse in the platform but also be able to export, automate and receive our data via API.

Pros

Definitely the ease of use. Its interface its great and you can easily navigate through the different features and modules. Also, Direct is a very good value for money. You can basically rely solely on Direct to do your screening, reporting, analysis and portfolio building.

Cons

Direct does not support Mac OS, which is their biggest limitation (Bloomberg are in this boat too). They added a web version of Direct but still I would like to use as an app. Also their document management its not great. They need to improve in that area too.

### "Useful tool, powerful, but requires some training"

February 4, 2026

5.0

For the most part, the tool is quite powerful, it is not as easy to customise as things like FactSet, but the Morningstar categories and standard data is impressive. Like with all things, to get the full use of it, you will end up needing holdings from data vendors etc, but that isn't Morningstar's fault per se. It can be quite daunting for a new user to learn what all the modules are for, and might take some training sessions to get the full experience. After being a light user for over a decade, there are still issues I am unfamiliar with and need training.

Pros

There are a lot of pre made templates that can bring any portfolio to life, there are many functions within Direct for many needs, performance reporting, attribution, portfolio monitoring, and most importantly, comparing funds/performance against the Morningstar peer groups.

Cons

Some functionality is clunky and not very easy to customise beyond the options given. For instance, for some charts it is tricky to automate with certain time periods, which is hugely frustrating as it should be quite simple to add, and would make a good template, perfect! Customer service can be a bit hit and miss, there are some very good agents and some are just trying to close your ticket as fast as possible without really caring about your issue.

### "Direct “Oldie” who learned to live with it"

February 5, 2026

3.0

It is a tool used on a daily basis and I’ve been using it for more thank 20 years now and I’ve lived to learn with its flaws. I reduced my work to using the data base, finding funds, conducting peer group analyses. I hope the excel add in will stay as is since this is more useful in customised calculations that Morningstar do not offer and for my personal reports that have a specific layout I designed myself.

Pros

It is the number one source for Fund data and possibility to calculate relative performances, rankings and more compared to peers; great for building peer groups, finding funds, building and testing Portfolios.

Cons

The software in its core hasn’t changed in many many years. It crashes regularly and the usability is somewhat cumbersome as to how modern software could work. Slow software regarding computations or loading of content. Very pricey compared to the offering and what offers e.g. Bloomberg or free sources. Additionally, every year service or content is taken out and prices rise….lately for example Morningstar Index Data.

### "An Essential Tool for Fund Selection Teams"

October 22, 2025

5.0

Pros

Morningstar Direct is an indispensable platform for fund selection teams. It supports the entire value chain: from idea generation (quantitative screening, global fund database, scoring tools) to in-depth fund analysis. The breadth of available data points, customizable charts, and qualitative insights (e.g., manager and firm-level data) allow for a truly comprehensive evaluation. The user interface is intuitive and user-friendly, with a relatively short learning curve for basic use. With some exploration, users can unlock its full potential. It also excels in reporting and monitoring tasks. Data management is robust, security is reliable, and customer support is responsive.

Cons

There are no major drawbacks. However, to fully leverage its advanced features, users need to invest time in exploring the platform. Some modules could benefit from tighter integration across sections.

I transitioned from Bloomberg Terminal to Morningstar Direct due to its more advanced and flexible capabilities for fund analysis and reporting. Morningstar offers a tailored solution for fund selection, with easier access to customizable data, a broader range of analytics, and no restrictions on data downloads. Upon joining a new team that didn’t yet use Morningstar Direct, I recommended its implementation to enhance the fund selection process.

### "Fantastic data and APIs"

February 4, 2026

4.0

Overall good, we like the product, we enjoy our relationship with team members we have spoken to in the past and the data are fantastic.

Pros

The data available are rich, wide and relatively up to date. Having access to APIs such as Excel and Python is very useful as well in efficiency management.

Cons

Direct itself can be clunky and there are frequent data mistakes. It would be good to iron these out as we spend a lot of time double checking when things don't look quite right. It is also quite expensive relative to some of the newer competitors coming to market.

### "Powerful Platform"

February 4, 2026

4.0

Overall, my experience with Morningstar Direct has been positive due to the quality and breadth of its data and analytical tools. However, the platform is not very user friendly and requires time and experience to navigate effectively.

Pros

Comprehensive data coverage that is widely used and trusted by wealth managers and asset managers across the industry.

Cons

The platform is not very user friendly, and it takes significant time and effort to fully understand how it works and navigate efficiently

### "Chief Executive Officer"

October 23, 2025

4.0

Morningstar Direct has assisted us in running our Fiduciary Scoring process since 2016, before that it was all manual, plug and chug of data. The automation process has been a huge value to our Firm. Very thankful.

Pros

The best thing is the automation I use in EXCEL API data tools. The platform is stable, runs quickly on most days. The staff is very helpful in helping get things fixed, the software might have been down 2 or 3 days since 2016. That is a solid track record in my book. If you are an API excel user, this is the product for you.

Cons

The biggest issues I have are mainly to do with limitations of data. It seems over time the API data points have steadily declined, while the price has steadily increased. SBBI, benchmark, index, and category data have been but along with data pulls for balance sheet and income statement data we used for business valuation.

### "Great platform "

February 4, 2026

5.0

Great, no complaints. Quick to support with queries and issues. The platform has been an invaluable addition to our investment management at Isio and we could not work without this moving forward.

Pros

Portfolio construction and analysis tool - more specifically applying weights to allocations, setting rebalancing frequency and running back tested analysis. Including presentation studio for client ready materials - sharing across teams is invaluable

Cons

The Computer application is sometimes slow and takes a while to load. Given the amount on the platform, I feel as though more training / insights should be shared.

### "Morningstar Direct - Best in the business "

October 23, 2025

5.0

Very positive and I have used Morningstar Direct for 10 years. It is the best program in the market and has the most extensive data set. I love the peer group comparisons and ability to compare different styles against their most appropriate peer group.

Pros

The amount of data within Morningstar Direct is better than competitors. I use it extensively for portfolio aggregation, and performance and style analysis. I also upload our portfolios in Morningstar Direct to monitor as a shadow portfolio.

Cons

It can take a while to load and can be clunky at times. For first time or novice users it is also difficult to navigate. However, training support is very strong.

### "Pros and cons on Morningstar Direct"

October 28, 2025

4.0

I use it, like I said on the pros section, to track the best funds for our clients. So what I use the most is the workspace tab and the lists to do screening. I use the portfolio analysis tab to monitor the performances (absolute and relative) of our custom models. Ultimately, I use the performance reporting tab to be warn by an email of the weekly performances of our investments.

Pros

Morningstar has a really wide database of funds (and ETF) that we use in our portfolios. Analysis on portfolio (such as portfolios attributions) are a great tool to monitor the relative performance of our investments.

Cons

The software interface is a bit old and not so attractive (even if it works). However it is too slow with many lags and bugs. Ultimately, the Excel add-in doesn't work very well. Sometimes, it blocks Excel to open (so you have to disable it). This point is the most annoying.

### "Morningstar review - great system and helpful staff"

February 5, 2026

5.0

My overall experience with Morningstar has been a pleasant and enjoyable experience. Morningstar have given me training on a number of occasions and are always around to assist with any of my questions. the overall system is great and provides me with all the information i need to make investment decisions.

Pros

Morningstar has a large data set that covers all your investment research needs. I like that I can get individual stock data reports and mutual fund data reports. Morningstar covers all the assets classed and provides accurate information for my research and proposal needs.

Cons

Morningstar does require time and effort to learn the system and get comfortable to be able to get the correct data set that you are looking for in your reports.

### "Even the basics are lacking in Morningstar"

August 13, 2025

1.0

Generally one of frustration. I use Morningstar because I have to, rather than because I want to. Frequent glitches and

Pros

When Morningstar is working, I can get large amounts of data in a relatively short amount of time. Easy to download into a spreadsheet. Presentation studio is clunky but has a lot of options for charts.

Cons

Overall, it offers very little upside to me. In particular: 1. Frequent downtime and crashes easily 2. Data is often incorrect or incomplete. 3. Getting any issue fixed requires several calls, emails, owls, etc. 4. Lack of an "undo" button or the ability to save as I go. Seriously? That means that if, sorry, "when" Morningstar crashes, I need to start over again unless I remember to save something after every step. And who doesn't have an "undo" button?

### "Stable and strong "

October 22, 2025

4.0

It took a bit of time to understand the system. But after I got the hang of it, it is very good and stable system. 4-5 years ago we really struggled with Presentation studio, components will not calculate or holdings are not pulling through. But of late we have no issues. this has freed up a lot of time within the team. The overall stability of the system has improved substantially ver the last 5-years.

Pros

The ease and consistency of performance reporting. The auto generation of reports is very handy. The 'models' we can build in M\* is critical to our business. We had very little issues with model holdings and performance tracking.

Cons

In the performance reporting, there are no way to quickly change the reporting date. ie. I have a normal performance report which gives me returns for 1M, 3M, 6M 1Y. If i run this report today, I will get the latest numbers. But I cannot run the report to give me the numbers as on 31 Dec 2024. I would have to rebuild the report get those numbers.

### "My 2 years of experience with Morningstar Direct"

October 30, 2025

4.0

Overall, I have had a bittersweet experience with Morningstar. The platform is quite slow and is quite tedious to use. A simple pull of stats should be easy or a change of date for multiple periods should be quick, but doing something like on the platform takes a great deal of time which is unnecessary.

Pros

The breadth and depth of information available on the platform especially for the funds that I work on has been extremely helpful. The analyst reports on funds are detailed and insightful, the industry reports on target date funds and the fund characteristics for the peer universe is the most comprehensive source of data available.

Cons

The platform although has a depth of information, I do not feel it is very user friendly or intuitive. During my initial days of having access to the platform, I struggled to navigate around. Moreover, although a support representative is assigned to the account, they do not walk through the platform which was a bit odd to me. A thorough and standard training should be conducted so users feel more comfortable in using the platform and then can continue to learn at their own pace.

Very good tool for our day to day business. We have been using it since 2010 and have always had positive experiences with it.

Pros

Possibilities of the tool which makes it a valuable asset for analysis as well as fund management activies, available data on mutual funds

Cons

Presentation studio is somewhat out of date, and fragile (broken links). It feels rather unflexible.

### "Almost Satisfactory"

October 29, 2025

3.0

Overall good. I wish there were more informative sessions (training) on how to best utilise all of the tools available for fund research, economic and market research and analysis.

Pros

The universe is vast; there is almost every kind of data point you would need for fund analysis. It makes is the leading software on the market for fund manager research.

Cons

There isn't much usable economic and securities data as I would like. We are required to utilise other software to get the latest economic trends which is a hassle when you're more accustomed to the Morningstar interface.

### "Solid and robust but the lack of certain data makes it limiting"

October 23, 2025

4.0

Overall, I like the system alot. However, I do wish more time and efforts could have been placed on the expanding new datapoints which are relevant and pertinent to my role as industry analyst within an asset management as opposed to having lots of datapoints which cant be used. I feel the system will be out of date at some point.

Pros

Excellent coverage of fund universe and datapoints. Different modules within the interface and overall ease of use. Quality for the major datapoints is excellent. Availability of helpdesk via the telephone is extremely helpful.

Cons

Too many datapoints - whilst the major datapoints are great, there are lots which are either blank or not very reliable, as a result they cannot be used. There are also a number of limitations - fund flows and performance are great but the breakdown between retail or institutional flows are not very good.

### "Morningstar Direct User Experience"

February 3, 2026

4.0

The experience with Morningstar is great in general, but probably some improvements are needed on the support team. As we are looking for guidance in several occasions, the team just provides general comments without actually helping to resolve the issues.

Pros

The investment universe that Morningstar covers impress me, as it does help us to perform market analysis or product assessment with the full set of data available.

Cons

When you are searching for a fund / vehicle on Morningstar, the filtering is too complicated, making it so difficult to pull out a complete list like what you may be able to do with Bloomberg.

### "Performance"

February 5, 2026

3.0

Pros

Morningstar Direct offers one of the largest and most trusted global investment databases, covering mutual funds, ETFs, stocks, fixed income, alternatives, and more. This depth of data underpins strong research, screening, and comparison work.

Cons

From a performance standpoint, the biggest frustration is the time cost: loading, filtering, and producing outputs can feel slower than expected for an institutional-grade system—especially when working with larger portfolios, running look‑through analyses, or building detailed presentations. This contributes to workflow friction and encourages workarounds (exporting to Excel, splitting analyses into smaller steps) that reduce productivity.

I would say my overall experience is mixed, there are some features that I like, but I am struggling with the new lens. It feels easier to use for creating lists and filtering investments, but find the old lens easier from every other perspective.

Pros

It's quite useful when trying to get a basic understanding of funds in the universe. Also useful when doing fund research, and trying to look for funds that fit a variety of criteria.

Cons

### "New User Feedback"

March 9, 2025

4.0

Morningstar Direct is a powerful and comprehensive platform that provides extensive financial data and analytical tools, making it highly valuable for investment research and portfolio management. Its ability to consolidate market data, fund performance, and risk metrics into a single interface is a major strength. However, as a newer user, I find the platform somewhat complex, with a learning curve that makes it challenging to grasp all its capabilities. Additionally, the lack of Mac compatibility is a drawback, as it limits accessibility for users who prefer macOS. Overall, it is a robust tool, but improvements in usability and platform flexibility would enhance the user experience. \* ALSO\* Please update the excel add in to work on Mac.

Pros

What I liked most about Morningstar Direct is its comprehensive data collection. It provides a vast range of financial data across multiple asset classes, allowing for in-depth analysis and informed decision-making. The platform consolidates market data, fund performance, risk metrics, and qualitative research into a single interface, making it efficient and reliable for investment analysis. This level of data integration helps streamline portfolio management, benchmarking, and strategy development, making it a valuable tool for professionals.

Cons

As a newer user of Morningstar Direct, I find it challenging to fully understand all of its capabilities due to the platform's complexity. While it offers extensive data and analysis tools, navigating and utilizing its full potential requires a steep learning curve. Additionally, the fact that it is only available as a Windows application is a significant drawback for me, as I am a native Mac user. This limitation makes it less convenient and restricts my ability to integrate it smoothly into my preferred workflow.

Overall, Morningstar Direct is an invaluable tool for portfolio construction and analysis. While not the most user-friendly app, it provides a huge range of analysis tools and data streams.

Pros

Great for building prospective portfolios and comparing investment styles, valuation points and sector/country weightings. Lots of sustainability data.

Cons

The desktop app feels clunky (online version is much better) and there are so many data streams that sometimes finding something simple, like a benchmark, can be challenging.

### "A long term user satisfied with application but not getting 100% out of it."

February 4, 2026

3.0

Overall good but would have liked to see a speedier application running equally well on the web without the need to download direct. Improvement needed on the support side as well.

Pros

The ease of use and the breadth of the database. Since my early days of using Morningstar the application has been improving constantly.

Cons

Whilst the online support is good, I twice had interactions with product specialists who never followed-up on my queries.
