### "Daily use Morningstar Direct as a quant"

August 13, 2025

5.0

I am overall satisfied with Morninstar Direct so far. I have been using it for more than 2 years, it continusously provides me assistance in my work.

Pros

Morningstar Portfolio Management and Portfolio Report because they provide easier ways to manage portfolio and gain reports. As a quantitative analyst, Morningstar also provides me online Lab or python environment to directly access their data, which is thanksful.

Cons

Though compay pay for use, it's expensive. However, it's provide insightful analysis such as 6P product analysis, and other useful info for investments.

### "Useful tool, powerful, but requires some training"

February 4, 2026

5.0

For the most part, the tool is quite powerful, it is not as easy to customise as things like FactSet, but the Morningstar categories and standard data is impressive. Like with all things, to get the full use of it, you will end up needing holdings from data vendors etc, but that isn't Morningstar's fault per se. It can be quite daunting for a new user to learn what all the modules are for, and might take some training sessions to get the full experience. After being a light user for over a decade, there are still issues I am unfamiliar with and need training.

Pros

There are a lot of pre made templates that can bring any portfolio to life, there are many functions within Direct for many needs, performance reporting, attribution, portfolio monitoring, and most importantly, comparing funds/performance against the Morningstar peer groups.

Cons

Some functionality is clunky and not very easy to customise beyond the options given. For instance, for some charts it is tricky to automate with certain time periods, which is hugely frustrating as it should be quite simple to add, and would make a good template, perfect! Customer service can be a bit hit and miss, there are some very good agents and some are just trying to close your ticket as fast as possible without really caring about your issue.

Have used MS Direct previously, fought to have the budget for MS Direct as it makes my job easier, searching for new investments in universe groups and/or analysing & monitoring existing investments or for new funds.

### "Direct “Oldie” who learned to live with it"

February 5, 2026

3.0

It is a tool used on a daily basis and I’ve been using it for more thank 20 years now and I’ve lived to learn with its flaws. I reduced my work to using the data base, finding funds, conducting peer group analyses. I hope the excel add in will stay as is since this is more useful in customised calculations that Morningstar do not offer and for my personal reports that have a specific layout I designed myself.

Pros

It is the number one source for Fund data and possibility to calculate relative performances, rankings and more compared to peers; great for building peer groups, finding funds, building and testing Portfolios.

Cons

The software in its core hasn’t changed in many many years. It crashes regularly and the usability is somewhat cumbersome as to how modern software could work. Slow software regarding computations or loading of content. Very pricey compared to the offering and what offers e.g. Bloomberg or free sources. Additionally, every year service or content is taken out and prices rise….lately for example Morningstar Index Data.

### "Excellent Support and a Constantly Evolving Platform"

February 24, 2026

4.0

Pros

The platform is continuously evolving and regularly updated, which ensures access to increasingly advanced data and functionality. The support team is punctual and responsive, and the Morningstar colleagues I interacted with have always been available and well‑prepared in providing assistance and clarification.

Cons

Some workflows are not very intuitive and require a significant amount of time to configure. The platform can feel slow when running more complex queries or when switching between modules.

### "An Essential Tool for Fund Selection Teams"

October 22, 2025

5.0

Pros

Morningstar Direct is an indispensable platform for fund selection teams. It supports the entire value chain: from idea generation (quantitative screening, global fund database, scoring tools) to in-depth fund analysis. The breadth of available data points, customizable charts, and qualitative insights (e.g., manager and firm-level data) allow for a truly comprehensive evaluation. The user interface is intuitive and user-friendly, with a relatively short learning curve for basic use. With some exploration, users can unlock its full potential. It also excels in reporting and monitoring tasks. Data management is robust, security is reliable, and customer support is responsive.

Cons

There are no major drawbacks. However, to fully leverage its advanced features, users need to invest time in exploring the platform. Some modules could benefit from tighter integration across sections.

Switched from

[Bloomberg Terminal](https://www.capterra.com/p/230048/Bloomberg-Terminal/)

I transitioned from Bloomberg Terminal to Morningstar Direct due to its more advanced and flexible capabilities for fund analysis and reporting. Morningstar offers a tailored solution for fund selection, with easier access to customizable data, a broader range of analytics, and no restrictions on data downloads. Upon joining a new team that didn’t yet use Morningstar Direct, I recommended its implementation to enhance the fund selection process.

### "Superior product with room to grow"

August 29, 2025

5.0

Pretty solid overall and highly recommended with caveats. Pretty pricy anymore but there is a lot to the product and the more functions you use, the better value it becomes. I have difficulty with product updates, that's on my company's tech dept.

Pros

I've never had any help in learning the program - totally self supported. Through that lens I've been able to get nearly all the data I require. Its fairly intuitive, easy to navigate and there are lots of tools for analysis. I know it is also available "online" through the browser which is good but the organization and layout is vastly different. Much harder to use to filter for funds, compare, etc. I use the desktop version. I like that data is updated frequently and generally pretty reliable. The analyst reports are great to read for mutual fund research. This is extremely valuable.

Cons

WHen it comes to deeper analysis like running simulations, monte carlo, etc, you need help and this is where it lacks. There isn't a lot of help in putting together reports and more importantly, what meaning can you derive from the reports generated. Is that a good result? Bad result? Is the data correct? Am I doing this correctly? Having some pre-recorded webinar type lectures would be helpful and of course live help too. Also I've gotten many "Not Responding" errors within the program and NO ONE from Morningstar has ever helped. Just the standard "Locate the Morningstar folder in the Local folder. Delete the Morningstar folder completely" let me know if it worked. No, it doesn't but no one cares. Presentation studio is not easy to set up templates in. It seems Mstar goes through phases of creating cool new templates and then it sits on the back burner. We need good reports to communicate.

### "Chief Executive Officer"

October 23, 2025

4.0

Morningstar Direct has assisted us in running our Fiduciary Scoring process since 2016, before that it was all manual, plug and chug of data. The automation process has been a huge value to our Firm. Very thankful.

Pros

The best thing is the automation I use in EXCEL API data tools. The platform is stable, runs quickly on most days. The staff is very helpful in helping get things fixed, the software might have been down 2 or 3 days since 2016. That is a solid track record in my book. If you are an API excel user, this is the product for you.

Cons

The biggest issues I have are mainly to do with limitations of data. It seems over time the API data points have steadily declined, while the price has steadily increased. SBBI, benchmark, index, and category data have been but along with data pulls for balance sheet and income statement data we used for business valuation.

### "Fantastic data and APIs"

February 4, 2026

4.0

Overall good, we like the product, we enjoy our relationship with team members we have spoken to in the past and the data are fantastic.

Pros

The data available are rich, wide and relatively up to date. Having access to APIs such as Excel and Python is very useful as well in efficiency management.

Cons

Direct itself can be clunky and there are frequent data mistakes. It would be good to iron these out as we spend a lot of time double checking when things don't look quite right. It is also quite expensive relative to some of the newer competitors coming to market.

### "Great Mutual Fund and ETF Data. Interface Could Use Work."

August 13, 2025

3.0

3 out of 5 stars. There is great data, but there are many issues with the data being slow. Issues with index data loading.

Pros

Presentation Studio. Customizing and making edits in Presentation Studio is nice. There is also great mutual fund and ETF data.

Cons

Not always intuitive or smooth when making edits. Can be clunky and slow. Batch reports constantly have errors. Reports in PS don't load.

### "Direct is a well-suited database for in depth fund analysis"

February 11, 2026

4.0

\-Overall I am satisfied with this database and in my view there is no better-suited choice for my needs as a fund analyst. I use it every day for my analyses. -Data quality is not 100% perfect but much better than the competitors I have worked with \[sensitive content hidden\]

Pros

\-Data quality: Good compared with competition -Multiple functionalities: Morningstar Direct enables an in depth fund analysis - using this database gives us an edge over competitors -Great people: Morningstar has great employees and it is always a pleasure to work with them -Insightful events and webinars: Research papers and Direct webinars are an important source of information

Cons

\-Expensive: For a small company like ours, have a Direct database license for every analyst is expensive. We also would wish to have more data export functionalities included. -Not very user friendly: While have multiple opportunities to pull reports and data - one has to know where to look. Direct is a jungle.

### "My personal views working with MS Direct"

February 4, 2026

4.0

Your overall experience with Morningstar Direct is that it’s a powerful, data‑rich platform that genuinely supports serious investment work—everything from portfolio analysis and model maintenance to research and factsheet production. Its analytics are solid, its data is reliable, and once templates are set up, reporting becomes far more efficient. But at the same time, the platform can feel clunky and slow, and the interface sometimes gets in the way of otherwise straightforward tasks. Custom reports can be fiddly to build, and the cost isn’t trivial. In practice, it’s a tool that delivers strong results and saves real time, but you often find yourself wishing it were a bit faster, more modern, and more intuitive given how much capability sits under the hood.

Pros

Morningstar Direct is strong because it combines high‑quality global data, solid portfolio analytics, and flexible reporting tools all in one place. It lets you analyse performance and risk with confidence, maintain model portfolios efficiently, and produce consistent, professional factsheets with minimal manual effort. Its screening tools, ESG integration, and reliable data infrastructure make it a dependable, day‑to‑day platform for investment research and portfolio management.

Cons

Morningstar Direct’s biggest drawbacks tend to come down to usability and efficiency rather than capability. The interface can feel dated and unintuitive, which means simple tasks sometimes take more clicks than they should. It can also run slowly—especially when working with large datasets or heavy templates—and custom reporting, while powerful, can be fiddly to set up and maintain. On top of that, licensing costs are high, and certain advanced features require extra modules, so the full platform can get expensive for teams. Overall, it’s a strong system, but one that sometimes feels heavier and less streamlined than modern alternatives.

### "Great Worktool with some needed improvements needed."

October 22, 2025

4.0

My overall experience is very good and the support I receive from the sales representative assigned to us in Spain, \[sensitive content hidden\] , is very good. He replies right away and tries to ensure whenever possible that our issues are quickly resolved.

Pros

It is one of the most comprehensive databases available. It allows you to filter the universe, create lists and compare them at many levels, covering most of my needs.

Cons

I cannot stand that it continuously asks me to re-sign in throughout the day. It is extremely frustrating to see that box continuously throughout the day. It does not offer as much granularity in a number of asset classes as I would like. This means the category is not always appropriate and comparisons become irrelevant. It would be great to see the Fund also compared quantitatively to its own benchmark. Not many funds have analyst coverage. The institutional share class in the base currency of the Fund is not easily identified. It is very hard to find data points by which to filter the universe. A smart search with a contains button would be great. You already offer it once you have an investment list but not sure why not available when you are in the Search Criteria area.

### "Pros and cons on Morningstar Direct"

October 28, 2025

4.0

I use it, like I said on the pros section, to track the best funds for our clients. So what I use the most is the workspace tab and the lists to do screening. I use the portfolio analysis tab to monitor the performances (absolute and relative) of our custom models. Ultimately, I use the performance reporting tab to be warn by an email of the weekly performances of our investments.

Pros

Morningstar has a really wide database of funds (and ETF) that we use in our portfolios. Analysis on portfolio (such as portfolios attributions) are a great tool to monitor the relative performance of our investments.

Cons

The software interface is a bit old and not so attractive (even if it works). However it is too slow with many lags and bugs. Ultimately, the Excel add-in doesn't work very well. Sometimes, it blocks Excel to open (so you have to disable it). This point is the most annoying.

### "No frills, does exactly what you need it to."

February 12, 2026

5.0

I use Morningstar daily and would find it difficult to do my job without it. You can trust the data and it has wide-ranging capabilities. Some of these capabilities I don't need, but many of them I do. Never had any major issues with the technical capability of Morningstar Direct. It's a no frills service which does what I need. Customer service is also very good.

Pros

Asset allocation (MVO) and portfolio management capabilities are particularly useful when dealing with fund-of-funds and MPS/model portfolios. Search Criteria and Performance Reporting are also very good for creating and regularly monitoring quant screens. The sheer breadth of data generally means everything you need is in one place, including ESG data through Sustainalytics.

Cons

Some of the functionality can be a little 'clunky' but this is preferable over the modernisation of software like this which, from experience, often overcomplicates things.

### "Morningstar review - great system and helpful staff"

February 5, 2026

5.0

My overall experience with Morningstar has been a pleasant and enjoyable experience. Morningstar have given me training on a number of occasions and are always around to assist with any of my questions. the overall system is great and provides me with all the information i need to make investment decisions.

Pros

Morningstar has a large data set that covers all your investment research needs. I like that I can get individual stock data reports and mutual fund data reports. Morningstar covers all the assets classed and provides accurate information for my research and proposal needs.

Cons

Morningstar does require time and effort to learn the system and get comfortable to be able to get the correct data set that you are looking for in your reports.

### "Everything you need for multi-managed PM"

October 27, 2025

5.0

Morningstar Direct is something that continues to surprise me with its capabilities and features. A power-user is truly able to achieve some remarkable things using only MS Direct.

Pros

Morningstar Direct has everything you need to run multi-managed portfolios. All the relevant technical tools that you need to build and manage models (and more) plus the ability to fully automate the upstream reporting stack are convenient put at your fingertips.

Cons

The archaic and often slow UI (that they are busy replacing with a sleek online experience) can be a source of frustration at times.

### "My 2 years of experience with Morningstar Direct"

October 30, 2025

4.0

Overall, I have had a bittersweet experience with Morningstar. The platform is quite slow and is quite tedious to use. A simple pull of stats should be easy or a change of date for multiple periods should be quick, but doing something like on the platform takes a great deal of time which is unnecessary.

Pros

The breadth and depth of information available on the platform especially for the funds that I work on has been extremely helpful. The analyst reports on funds are detailed and insightful, the industry reports on target date funds and the fund characteristics for the peer universe is the most comprehensive source of data available.

Cons

The platform although has a depth of information, I do not feel it is very user friendly or intuitive. During my initial days of having access to the platform, I struggled to navigate around. Moreover, although a support representative is assigned to the account, they do not walk through the platform which was a bit odd to me. A thorough and standard training should be conducted so users feel more comfortable in using the platform and then can continue to learn at their own pace.

### "Reliable and Data-Rich Platform with Room for Improvement"

February 4, 2026

4.0

Pros

What I liked most about Morningstar Direct is how easy it is to use, even though it offers a huge depth of information. It’s easy to find what you need, pull together relevant data points, and run meaningful comparisons without the process feeling overly complicated. I also really appreciate the scale of AUM covered - having such broad market data in one place makes the analysis feel more complete and reliable. Overall, it’s a very practical tool that combines strong functionality with a user-friendly experience.

Cons

It can occasionally be affected by errors or data inconsistencies, which means you sometimes have to double-check figures before relying on them. While these issues aren’t constant, they can slow down workflows when accuracy is critical. Additionally, the cost is relatively high, so it’s important to ensure you are fully utilising the platform to justify the investment.

### "Morningstar Direct User Experience"

February 3, 2026

4.0

The experience with Morningstar is great in general, but probably some improvements are needed on the support team. As we are looking for guidance in several occasions, the team just provides general comments without actually helping to resolve the issues.

Pros

The investment universe that Morningstar covers impress me, as it does help us to perform market analysis or product assessment with the full set of data available.

Cons

When you are searching for a fund / vehicle on Morningstar, the filtering is too complicated, making it so difficult to pull out a complete list like what you may be able to do with Bloomberg.

I would say my overall experience is mixed, there are some features that I like, but I am struggling with the new lens. It feels easier to use for creating lists and filtering investments, but find the old lens easier from every other perspective.

Pros

It's quite useful when trying to get a basic understanding of funds in the universe. Also useful when doing fund research, and trying to look for funds that fit a variety of criteria.

Cons

We have repeatedly raised an issue with an equity security being labelled as fixed income, which is yet to be fixed.

We use the Tool on a daily basis, from reporting, to research or produce custom factsheets. It is an industry standard!

Pros

Handling of Tool is excellent. Data Quality is high, easy to compare different funds. We also like the presentation studio to produce customized fact sheets

Cons

I do not really find any major cons. In times of tight IT budgets it should be possible to share a user account within a team!
