“Responses to stale data inquiries come too late. When we encounter missing data in Morningstar Direct, we report it to Morningstar immediately. And although a ticket is created right away, the resolution often either comes too late for us to use for any daily reporting OR the notification of resolution comes much later than when the data got fixed (requiring me to have to keep "refreshing" views to see if it has been fixed).“

### "Direct Success"

August 20, 2026

5.0

Overall, I'm satisfied with the product. As I came to my recent employer, they didn't have Direct and I fought for it because it is helpful.

Pros

Depth of data, ease of use and upgraded AI assistant. Building out of their ETF data and now the liquid alternatives has been good too.

Cons

The service interruptions that seem to happen every 8 weeks. Also, I wish the data on the AI assistant could be increased. I run queries and it times out if too much data is pulled.

### "Powerful Institutional Research Platform with Excellent Data Depth, but Room for Improvement in Usability"

August 19, 2026

4.0

Overall, my experience with Morningstar Direct has been very positive. As an investment professional, I rely on it regularly for benchmark analysis, fund research, portfolio analytics, and data validation. The platform consistently provides the depth and flexibility required to support institutional-level decision-making. While the user experience could be more intuitive and the onboarding process simplified, the quality and breadth of the data make it a core tool in the investment research process. For organizations that require advanced analytics and detailed portfolio insights, the platform delivers significant value despite its higher cost and complexity. I would recommend Morningstar Direct to asset managers, portfolio managers, analysts, and wealth management teams that need professional-grade investment research and reporting capabilities. The return on investment is strongest when users fully leverage the platform's analytical depth and automation capabilities.

Pros

Morningstar Direct provides access to a vast universe of investment data, benchmarks, and analytics that are essential for institutional portfolio management and research. The platform excels at performance analysis, benchmarking, fund research, and portfolio construction. I particularly appreciate the depth of available data and the ability to answer complex investment questions that would be difficult to solve using standard advisor tools. The Excel integration is another major strength. Once configured properly, it allows users to automate workflows, create custom reports, and leverage Morningstar data directly within existing analytical processes. The platform also offers strong presentation and reporting capabilities, helping transform research into client-friendly outputs. Additional strengths include: Extensive fund and benchmark coverage Robust investment analytics Powerful portfolio and performance reporting Strong support for institutional research workflows Valuable for investment professionals who require deep data and customization Ability to compare investments and portfolios across multiple dimensions

Cons

The biggest challenge is ease of use. Morningstar Direct is incredibly powerful, but that power comes with complexity. New users can face a steep learning curve, and some workflows require significant training before becoming efficient. Setup and access management can also be frustrating. Installing the application and Excel add-in, managing permissions, and navigating different Morningstar products and licensing structures can create unnecessary friction. In addition, troubleshooting data queries or integrations sometimes requires support intervention. The user interface has improved, but there are still areas where navigation and workflow efficiency could be simplified, especially for occasional users. Key drawbacks: Steep learning curve High licensing cost Complex setup and access management Occasional Excel add-in and integration issues Multiple Morningstar products can create confusion regarding functionality and permissions

### "Investment Analyst Review of Morningstar Direct"

August 19, 2026

2.0

While there are lots of benefits to using Morningstar Direct, there are some limitations as well. Be prepared for constant changing of things from Morningstar, which will slow down established workflows!

Pros

Morningstar Direct has at least some information on all of the mutual funds and ETFs that I have analyzed. For some of the larger funds, Morningstar has analyst coverage of the fund, which is generally helpful.

Cons

The ever-rising cost has been an issue for our firm. I spend a lot of time analyzing mutual funds and ETFs. The individual fund page has become less helpful over the years. In years past, I was able to use the Primary Prospectus Benchmark and it would pull the actual benchmark. For many funds now, the Primary Prospectus Benchmark is a broad index that is not appropriate as a benchmark for the fund I am analyzing (due to the SEC rule). Oftentimes, the benchmarks don't populate data correctly making Morningstar Direct increasingly harder to use. It also has been frustrating that specific product involvement revenue data is not available directly in Morningstar Direct. For example, Morningstar Direct may report a company has tobacco distribution revenue of 0%-4.9%, but unless I log into Sustainalytics Global Access, I cannot see what the specific revenue is. It would be helpful to see this information in Morningstar Direct (even if the product involvement revenue % is estimated). Lastly, it seems that Morningstar covers less mutual funds with actual human analysts, and relies more on automated quantitative overviews. I have not found these quantitative overviews to be helpful.

### "Great tool for an investor or advisor"

July 21, 2026

5.0

I am very happy and satisfied with Direct. I rely on Direct for our fund management, investor's investments screening and portfolio reporting. Direct bring security and reliability that we will not only build and analyse in the platform but also be able to export, automate and receive our data via API.

Pros

Definitely the ease of use. Its interface its great and you can easily navigate through the different features and modules. Also, Direct is a very good value for money. You can basically rely solely on Direct to do your screening, reporting, analysis and portfolio building.

Cons

Direct does not support Mac OS, which is their biggest limitation (Bloomberg are in this boat too). They added a web version of Direct but still I would like to use as an app. Also their document management its not great. They need to improve in that area too.

### "Need a more unified experience"

August 20, 2026

4.0

Overall, my experience with Morningstar Direct has been positive. Workspace is helpful for recurring data needs, with a straightforward report creation that makes routine tasks efficient. However, the experience changes when accessing different types of data, and I have to be redirected between the app and web versions. The differences in navigation, and available data across the two platforms can create confusion. A more consistent and integrated experience would improve usability and reduce the learning curve for users.

Pros

One of the things I value most about is Workspace and how easy it is to use. Setting up reports requires minimal effort, making it an efficient solution for regular data and reporting needs.

Cons

I find it frustrating that certain data is more easily available through the web experience, which differs considerably from the app. Switching between the two can be confusing, as it requires remembering what information and functionality are available in each environment.

### "Constant Nickel and Diming"

August 19, 2026

2.0

While I used to really value Morningstar, I have been looking at other offerings in the research space due to the cons described above. I get less value now but with substantially increased costs.

Pros

All-in-one platform to centralize investment research process has been helpful. It is a way to organize our investment research across a distributed workforce.

Cons

Constant nickel and diming/loss of features. Costs have gone up substantially on services that were included for free just a few years ago (such as Sustainalytics information and Morningstar Index information). You are making the product out of reach in terms of affordability. Also, the move away from actual analyst reviews to computer-derived reviews for mutual funds and ETFs has been very disappointing. We often find mistakes in the computer-derived reviews, and as such, cannot count on them to add value to our research process. The increase in costs combined with the decrease in product offering has been very disappointing

### "Reporting AI and Research "

August 19, 2026

4.0

Overall Morningstar has been a great solution for our company to enhance our reports, industry research and AI capabilities. I am glad they the product is continually improving as we have only had it for 6 months and they have already made meaningful improvements to the AI and presentation studio sections.

Pros

I like that it provides a solution to having to manually update fund profiles or create investor reports. We can make templates and let the numbers get updated month over month which is very helpful. I also like that they are integrating AI with both their own AI within Direct and an MCP Plugin. Creating investment lists and reports using the AI is very easy.

Cons

I wish the AI would also be able to screen and pull information for all monringstar data as right now you cant pull hedge fund or index data directly. I also find that the presentation studio has many minor bugs such as not applying all funds to a report even when you press apply to report, i have to go through manually and apply all the funds from the list i selected.

### "Overall good experience. "

August 26, 2026

4.0

Very good. It has been almost 10 years since I started using Morningstar, and still haven't used many functions or modules.

Pros

The powerful data that is behind the tool, as well as the interface that is pretty straight forward to use.

Cons

Many datapoints that are similar and may have different limitations. Not exactly wrong in many cases, but simply limits the usability. Data quality can also improve, too much trouble if a firm decide to fix a datapoint on their own fund. Have dedicated local resource can be helpful, compared to outsourcing everything overseas.

### "Good overall source for data"

August 26, 2026

4.0

Overall experience is fair but could be useful if all relevant features are easily searchable. Tutorials of new features every so often would be useful

Pros

Access to fund data including return series and fund characteristics, able to quickly review list of funds with given secid

Cons

Slow and hard to navigate and get help with functions and features. The application is not very user friendly to navigate around and access to how certain data points are calculated is not available without looking in data definition.

August 19, 2026

5.0

Pros

The capabilities and vast amounts of data available to the user. The dashboards can be very insightful when the user puts in the time to build them out.

Cons

Some of the raw data exports to excel can be formatted oddly. It is not the biggest issue, but just requires some quick formatting changing from the user.

### "An Essential Tool for Fund Selection Teams"

October 22, 2025

5.0

Pros

Morningstar Direct is an indispensable platform for fund selection teams. It supports the entire value chain: from idea generation (quantitative screening, global fund database, scoring tools) to in-depth fund analysis. The breadth of available data points, customizable charts, and qualitative insights (e.g., manager and firm-level data) allow for a truly comprehensive evaluation. The user interface is intuitive and user-friendly, with a relatively short learning curve for basic use. With some exploration, users can unlock its full potential. It also excels in reporting and monitoring tasks. Data management is robust, security is reliable, and customer support is responsive.

Cons

There are no major drawbacks. However, to fully leverage its advanced features, users need to invest time in exploring the platform. Some modules could benefit from tighter integration across sections.

I transitioned from Bloomberg Terminal to Morningstar Direct due to its more advanced and flexible capabilities for fund analysis and reporting. Morningstar offers a tailored solution for fund selection, with easier access to customizable data, a broader range of analytics, and no restrictions on data downloads. Upon joining a new team that didn’t yet use Morningstar Direct, I recommended its implementation to enhance the fund selection process.

### "Great platform "

February 4, 2026

5.0

Great, no complaints. Quick to support with queries and issues. The platform has been an invaluable addition to our investment management at Isio and we could not work without this moving forward.

Pros

Portfolio construction and analysis tool - more specifically applying weights to allocations, setting rebalancing frequency and running back tested analysis. Including presentation studio for client ready materials - sharing across teams is invaluable

Cons

The Computer application is sometimes slow and takes a while to load. Given the amount on the platform, I feel as though more training / insights should be shared.

### "Direct is a well-suited database for in depth fund analysis"

February 11, 2026

4.0

\-Overall I am satisfied with this database and in my view there is no better-suited choice for my needs as a fund analyst. I use it every day for my analyses. -Data quality is not 100% perfect but much better than the competitors I have worked with \[sensitive content hidden\]

Pros

\-Data quality: Good compared with competition -Multiple functionalities: Morningstar Direct enables an in depth fund analysis - using this database gives us an edge over competitors -Great people: Morningstar has great employees and it is always a pleasure to work with them -Insightful events and webinars: Research papers and Direct webinars are an important source of information

Cons

\-Expensive: For a small company like ours, have a Direct database license for every analyst is expensive. We also would wish to have more data export functionalities included. -Not very user friendly: While have multiple opportunities to pull reports and data - one has to know where to look. Direct is a jungle.

### "Comprehensive Investment Platform with Robust Analytics"

February 4, 2026

5.0

My overall experience with Morningstar Direct has been positive. The platform provides a comprehensive and reliable source of investment data, analytics, and research tools that significantly enhance our ability to make informed investment decisions. Its extensive database and customizable reporting features are particularly valuable. However, I also found that the interface can sometimes be complex and challenging to navigate, especially for new users, which may require additional training. Despite this, the depth of information and analytical capabilities make it a powerful tool for our team. Overall, I am satisfied with the platform and see it as an essential resource for our investment analysis and performance monitoring.

Pros

I found Morningstar Direct to be an incredibly comprehensive and user-friendly platform. What I liked most was its extensive database of investment data and analysis tools, which allow for in-depth research and accurate performance tracking. The platform's customizable reports and robust screening features make it easy to analyze various investment options efficiently. Additionally, the ability to access detailed fund ratings and insights helps in making well-informed investment decisions. Overall, Morningstar Direct provides a powerful combination of data, analytics, and user interface that significantly enhances our investment review process.

Cons

While Morningstar Direct offers extensive data and tools, I found that its interface can sometimes be overwhelming due to the sheer volume of information available. Navigating through various features and reports can be time-consuming, especially for new users. Additionally, some of the advanced features require a steep learning curve, which may require additional training to fully utilize the platform’s capabilities. Lastly, the cost of the platform can be high for smaller teams or individual users.

### "Powerful Portfolio Analysis and Professional Client Reporting Tool"

February 4, 2026

5.0

Morningstar Direct is a core tool in my workflow. It offers deep data, strong analytics, and flexible reporting. Portfolio analysis and backtesting support sound investment decisions. Presentation Studio stands out for client reporting and visual clarity. The platform takes time to learn, but the payoff is high once embedded into daily processes.

Pros

Morningstar Direct is strong for portfolio management and strategy backtesting. The depth of data supports detailed analysis across asset classes and time periods. I mainly use Presentation Studio to build custom reporting packs. It turns complex portfolio data into clear, client-friendly visuals. This improves communication and speeds up reporting workflows.

Cons

Morningstar Direct is US centric, so coverage and research depth are stronger for US funds than for South African funds. Reporting works well for equity portfolios, but bond analysis is harder. For many South African funds, underlying bond holdings lack sufficient disclosure. This makes it difficult to assess credit quality and duration with confidence.

### "Mixed Review Bag"

October 23, 2025

3.0

Overall, I think Morningstar Direct is a powerful tool with unmatched data access and strong capabilities for fund comparison and research, making it essential for my firm’s operations. However, its performance lags, especially during peak hours, and the clunky Presentation Studio can be a hassle. Slow support and underdeveloped features further frustrate me at times. While it’s a valuable resource, these issues hold it back from being as seamless and user-friendly as I’d like.

Pros

I find Morningstar Direct to be an incredibly data-rich platform, which is a huge advantage for my firm. Its extensive features allow me to produce high-quality client materials, research pieces, and detailed data comparisons with ease. It’s particularly valuable for comparing our funds, helping us analyze performance and make informed investment decisions efficiently.

Cons

However, I often find Morningstar Direct frustratingly slow, especially during North American stock trading hours, which disrupts my workflow. The Presentation Studio is a particular pain point—it’s sluggish and not intuitive, making it tough for me to create specific charts without a struggle. Morningstar’s support team can also be slow, sometimes taking days to respond and weeks to resolve my queries. Additionally, certain features, like trying to edit “My Sector” on our firm-level database, feel underdeveloped and restrictive, which limits my ability to customize data as needed.

### "No frills, does exactly what you need it to."

February 12, 2026

5.0

I use Morningstar daily and would find it difficult to do my job without it. You can trust the data and it has wide-ranging capabilities. Some of these capabilities I don't need, but many of them I do. Never had any major issues with the technical capability of Morningstar Direct. It's a no frills service which does what I need. Customer service is also very good.

Pros

Asset allocation (MVO) and portfolio management capabilities are particularly useful when dealing with fund-of-funds and MPS/model portfolios. Search Criteria and Performance Reporting are also very good for creating and regularly monitoring quant screens. The sheer breadth of data generally means everything you need is in one place, including ESG data through Sustainalytics.

Cons

Some of the functionality can be a little 'clunky' but this is preferable over the modernisation of software like this which, from experience, often overcomplicates things.

February 5, 2026

My overall experience with Morningstar has been a pleasant and enjoyable experience. Morningstar have given me training on a number of occasions and are always around to assist with any of my questions. the overall system is great and provides me with all the information i need to make investment decisions.

Pros

Morningstar has a large data set that covers all your investment research needs. I like that I can get individual stock data reports and mutual fund data reports. Morningstar covers all the assets classed and provides accurate information for my research and proposal needs.

Cons

Morningstar does require time and effort to learn the system and get comfortable to be able to get the correct data set that you are looking for in your reports.

### "A great tool for fund selection."

February 12, 2026

5.0

Pros

What I like most is the depth of the equity fund data. I also appreciate the Python API launched a few months ago, which allows for the automation of many tasks (fund selection, risk monitoring, etc.).

Cons

Conversely, I find that there is a lack of data depth for bond funds. The API could also be improved for retrieving certain data.

### "Good service! Please sort out the Excel Login and implement AI"

October 22, 2025

4.0

I am very happy with the experience. As mentioned above, all the information is where I need it to be which is very helpful.

Pros

I am able to get the information I need all in one place. If changes need to be made then these are typically done quickly.

Cons

Since the past couple of updates, after speaking to a lot of my colleagues it is really annoying to be prompted to log-in everytime I open excel. This never used to happen, why? Also there doesnt seem to be much AI intergration. It would be great if the excel API had a prompt that I could ask AI - "please give me the 1 year performance of X fund from this date to this date" this would save loads of time.

It's a good experience I like that response times have improved and matters are sorted out quickly. I also like the learning centre and the OnDemand videos it's good to look back and see how one can improve themselves.

Pros

It makes presenting data to the layperson a simple task, I like that it blends the use of many visuals and the options to use the Morningstar templates to be able to tell a story that makes sense

Cons

Overall its a tool thats definetly needed when working in the financial industry but it takes time to effectively understand and use

Pros

A lot of information available that are used by most throughout the industry and therefore creates a coherence with other contacts. Having the option to transfer the data into excel is also incredibly helpful and effective

Cons

Handling, incredibly difficult to filter out the information actually needed in the app itself and it gets even harder with the excel add-in.

Very strong - incredibly useful tool for my role as a product analyst at a boutique asset management firm.

Pros

The ability to comprehensively analyse both risk and return metrics across peer universes. Particularly useful for our Value for Money methodology as well as analysing if net flows are driven by outperforming funds.

Cons

PRIIPS/KIIDS often outdated along with the fact that primary/virtual share class classifications are often hard to understand - more supporting literature regarding definitions of the two needed.

### "Almost Satisfactory"

October 29, 2025

3.0

Overall good. I wish there were more informative sessions (training) on how to best utilise all of the tools available for fund research, economic and market research and analysis.

Pros

The universe is vast; there is almost every kind of data point you would need for fund analysis. It makes is the leading software on the market for fund manager research.

Cons

There isn't much usable economic and securities data as I would like. We are required to utilise other software to get the latest economic trends which is a hassle when you're more accustomed to the Morningstar interface.
