However, I do wish more time and efforts could have been placed on the expanding new datapoints which are relevant and pertinent to my role as industry analyst within an asset management as opposed to having lots of datapoints which cant be used. I feel the system will be out of date at some point. Pros Excellent coverage of fund universe and datapoints. Different modules within the interface and overall ease of use. Quality for the major datapoints is excellent. Availability of helpdesk via the telephone is extremely helpful. Cons Too many datapoints - whilst the major datapoints are great, there are lots which are either blank or not very reliable, as a result they cannot be used. There are also a number of limitations - fund flows and performance are great but the breakdown between retail or institutional flows are not very good. Review Source Piotr R. Pros It's so easy to personalize reports once the template is built. Also, it's so easy to collect and analyze all of the investment data, it's a must for our portfolio management. Cons It's a little expensive so you have to be sure that you use it enough for it to be worth it. There is also a learning curve in the beginning but the data is amazing. I wish there were more informative sessions (training) on how to best utilise all of the tools available for fund research, economic and market research and analysis. Pros The universe is vast; there is almost every kind of data point you would need for fund analysis. It makes is the leading software on the market for fund manager research. Cons There isn't much usable economic and securities data as I would like. Fund Selector Investment Management Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Perfect for Funds, but Falls Short on Bonds and Macro Data" May 22, 2025 5.0 I’ve been using Morningstar for many years and overall I’m very satisfied, especially because I mainly use it for funds and ETFs. However, it’s true that Bloomberg provides more comprehensive information when it comes to bonds and macro data such as inflation, GDP, and so on. Pros What I like the most is the quantity and quality of information on investment funds at an international level. I love the ability to access it in a very visual format through the Presentation Studio module, as well as the ease of downloading data into Excel. Cons What I like the least is the information about bonds and fixed income in general.The information on bonds and fixed income is incomplete. The disclosure of underlying currency exposure could be improved — it should be provided by the fund manager, along with net positions when derivatives are used. Switched from [LSEG Risk Intelligence](https://www.capterra.com/p/185117/LSEG-Risk-Intelligence/) At the time, Morningstar was more cost-effective tha Lipper and provided more comprehensive information, and we found the Presentation Studio functionality particularly useful. I like the customization and the ability to do a multitude of reporting from the platform. Pros I like how you are able to do unique analysis on stocks, funds, and portfolios to analyze and compare to benchmarks. Some of the features are very helpful in creating materials for clients. Pros Possibilities of the tool which makes it a valuable asset for analysis as well as fund management activies, available data on mutual funds Cons Presentation studio is somewhat out of date, and fragile (broken links). I also like the learning centre and the OnDemand videos it's good to look back and see how one can improve themselves. Pros It makes presenting data to the layperson a simple task, I like that it blends the use of many visuals and the options to use the Morningstar templates to be able to tell a story that makes sense Cons The lag, it is so slow at times just loading Morningstar will take forever don't get me started on presentation studio because wow. Cons When you are searching for a fund / vehicle on Morningstar, the filtering is too complicated, making it so difficult to pull out a complete list like what you may be able to do with Bloomberg. It feels easier to use for creating lists and filtering investments, but find the old lens easier from every other perspective. Pros It's quite useful when trying to get a basic understanding of funds in the universe. Also useful when doing fund research, and trying to look for funds that fit a variety of criteria. I am continuing to learn more, and thanks to our customer relationship manager, have been further developing my skills recently. Pros Morningstar is an excellent tool within our toolbox - allowing us to get and extract all of the data we need when looking at funds. I find the search criteria tool particularly useful. Cons Occasionally there are periods in which there seem to be outages (outside of AWS) which, in the moment, can be very frustrating if something is required there and then and I am unable to access it. Then I've also had instances of really great feedback and assistance, but I've determined that it only matters on who you get on the other end of the phone on whether your problem will actually be fixed or not. When it is working well, the software is easy to use. When it is not working well, it is the bane of my existence, and I have added MANY hours on top of my typical workload trying to find work arounds to bugs that are going on due to the lack of technical support I received. Pros I like the customization ability out of presentation studios and the capability to integrate multiple data sets into one report. The ability to craft anything you need is very nice. Cons It honestly just feels clunky at so many iterations or when there are minor issues. When the main fix is just a simple restart, it becomes frustrating that there is often time a repeating of work due to the software not functioning/loading properly on computers that have the capacity to smoothly run the program. Cons Sometimes it is not the most intuitive system and takes a while to load necessary information, but with the support of the Customer Success and Support teams, who provide step by step guidance either on a call or as a written guide, the queries get resolved quickly.
