The primary reason for me to use Morningstar is to retrieve data and use it somewhere else, because I am not using Direct. Wasting time looking at the loading screen and clicking around (with approximately zero shortcuts, for some reason) until I get a crash or have to relog is not worth my time. Also, I’m not a fan of surprise changes, such as datapoints no longer being supported. Pros High-quality fundamental data on funds, both highly relevant and accurate. Wide data coverage. Lab is a great improvement to the overall experience. Cons The platform is extremely outdated. Everything is slow, and the structure is unintuitive. There are too many features and single-use cases. The app is also inconsistent, with multiple issues such as having to relog, indefinite loading, or just flat-out crashes. Review Source RL Rob L. System could function better with more a bit more flexibility and customization for the users. Pros the large database of funds. I enjoy the use of presentation studio in particular and love the templates and visuals offered. Cons the unreliability of FI metrics due to proper coverage. Lots of tools built for specific research tasks Equities analytics is seen to be strong Cons The ability to stay in a module whilst accessing another module. i.e. being able to stay in the workspace module whilst accessing the asset flows module would be super useful. The depth of the database is unparalleled for fund comparisons in my view. The presentation Studio is a great tool for building reports too. Cons The main issue with Direct is lag and loading times (sometimes, including glitches at Presentation Studio). The interface needs improvement in my view. February 3, 2026 5.0 I think Morningstar Direct is great, I use it alot for peer group data and enables us to see how we position versus other funds in the peer group Pros User friendly interface, easy to create edit and build new reports. Can create automated batches which is very useful. Cons Sometimes there are stale prices on shareclasses when it has not priced, not giving an accurate representation. The tool itself is fantastic and recommend it highly. The customer experience has been rather unsatisfactory. I have had a net negative experience with their customer support team, constantly being pitched sales rather than genuine help on my research projects. It feels shady and \[sensitive content hidden\] like. I wish they would change this, since it wasn't like this in years past Pros Morningstar is very easy to use with an incredibly user-friendly learning curve. Having such powerful data at your fingertips makes it my go-to tool for certain types of investment research. Cons It can be difficult to find data points. There are hundreds to parse through and a great deal of them return empty values. You really need to know the exact spelling / nomenclature of the data point you need in advance. I encountered no errors and it ran quicker than FE while having more features. I believe it could be better if the interface was designed more intuitively, some key features are difficult to find but the support staff are very helpful. Pros A breath of analytical tools and such in depth features for portfolio management and analysis. The style and factor analysis features for equity funds makes it far easier to blend to make a risk neutral portfolio. Cons Steep learning curve, I don't think the interface is the most intuitive. Various formulas and graphs built in the system are helpful. Cons Abbreviations used, the BIGGEST PAIN POINT. There is no consistent logic for US vs U.S. vs U S funds. Sometimes the name is spelled out, sometimes not, sometimes missing certain portions of the name. Hard to know what currency used. Cons Some workflows are not very intuitive and require a significant amount of time to configure. The platform can feel slow when running more complex queries or when switching between modules. Pros The availability of data of many funds, mainly UCITS. The Presentation Studio reporting tool. Cons The slow working of the Note Manager in Workspace. I have to shut down and restart the Morningstar to work with Note Manager. The fund database is not very complete. Main funds we are missing : Luxemburg SIFs and ELTIFs. Review Source AR Aarsh R. When I first got licensed, the customer success team scheduled very informative training sessions which helped me build a good knowledge base. I am impressed by the user interface and how easy and organized it feels. There are some areas where it could be improved. Pros Morningstar's has a great user interface, easy to use and very friendly and responsive customer service. The visuals make it very intuitive to find insights in the dataset. Cons On the performance reporting function, I would like to have the option to see the data formatted in rows too instead of just columns.
