From out of the box solutions to being able to create your own unique solutions - there are many options. Client support is also generally good. Pros Morningstar Direct is extremely helpful with my workflow and makes things easy: - From doing due diligence on managers - Monitoring performance - Easy to build out presentations and premade solutions are good - Lot's of customization. - Client support is generally good. Cons Its not intuitive to use and can be overwhelming for a new user. New user guides should be enhanced/refreshed. Review Source BB Brendan B. The time series function for each data point is also incredibly helpful. Cons The Excel export limits as well as search limits make it difficult to perform large data pulls. Additionally, there are performance issues (logs out randomly), and a somewhat clunky search function for data points. Review Source KK Kader K. There is still improvements to make to the new MS Direct, but it is evolving pretty fast. Pros I really love the "new" MS Direct interface and its functionnalities. Also, i'm a big fan of your API and the python library, which is the most convenient and efficient format on the market. Cons There are many downtime periods. I still need to use the "old" MS Direct because the new one is limited at the current time. Somehow, it is really difficult to extract single period vs time-series data when creating reports. Pros Responsiveness and resourcefulness of the team is outstanding. Any time I have had a question someone on the team is available to help. I think the learning curve is quite high, eventhough I am very technical. Pros Comprehensive product, with a lot funcionalities. Great insights. Look-through exposure is really a key insight. Taylor-made reports is also great! Cons It is not so userfriendly. It can be tricky to navigate and figure out where to go for specific tasks. Has been quite slow, but appreaes to be better now. Update frequency of look-through exposure from funds managers would be very nice. Cons It is probably the least user friendly system of its type, it requires very regular usage to remain familiar with the pathways to access and manipulate the data I need. Usefull to compair tow or more mutual funds. Good screen desing. Cons Sometimes it is complex. Sometimes is does not work and you have to try again. Mainly when drawing a chart. The staff was not very responsive, it took over a month to get M\* access set up. Pros M\* Direct is very flexible tool. One can use the inbuilt automations or create something of their own. The global direct support is amazing in coming upto the speed. Cons There is a steeper learning curve for more complex needs but sometimes that's what is required to solve the complex problems. It's a great product if used correctly, and I know I'm barely scratching the surface with its offering. I've given it 3\* mainly because of price and ease of use. Pros The depth and breadth of information you can get from it. I use it mainly for market research, comparing funds performance, price, holdings etc. The team at Morningstar are very helpful with any queries we have and also providing training. Cons I find it very complicated to use and not very intuitive. I will caveat this with I don't use it daily and I'm not an analyst (I work in Distribution), so this does not come naturally to me. It is also very expensive, much more than competitors (I know it's providing a different service but it's a much higher price tag). Review Source MT Michael T. Cons The quality of data is very dependent on the individual asset managers communicating to Morningstar, which impairs comparisons across products. The interface is not very user-friendly. We utilize MSD for all of our reports generated for Investment meetings, and it can visualize data that needs to be conveyed for these meetings in an easy manner. The platform is generally very easy to use and has updated quite regularly. Pros Clear and concise lay out and easy to use for the major reasons we use. The Presentation Studio option is great, and the support team we utilize is responsive and open to help. The training sessions I have attended have also been very helpful. Cons Can be a little laggy and suffer unexpected time outs that can be a little frustrating, but generally my own time with MSD has been positive. Pros Once you start understanding how to use the app, it starts to become clear what to do. It can produce a huge amount of data and charting which is extremely helpful for our workflow. If we were to purchase the full version we would need to take some courses to be full comfortable and be able to maximise use. Pros We had a trial with M\* Direct which significantly boosted our capabilities. Not just within the MPS space but also with single stock analysis which we do not often do.
