You are new to LLM-based product development: Buy Vellum (no question - build your own tooling later if you even need to). 2. You have started developing LLM-based products but not yet in production: Buy Vellum (get to production faster). 3. You have existing LLM-based products in production, but your tooling is limited: Buy Vellum (you likely need to improve the rate of development for the future - Vellum gets you there faster). 4. You have production LLM-products and extensive tooling: Probably still buy Vellum (focus on building and improving your products or experimenting with new ones. Vellum has the tooling you need in most cases and it will continue to get better while you work on what matters to your business). Reason to buy: Vellum is your partner. They work with you to understand your needs to build your products. That makes them great and building the product/tooling that allows you to focus on building your product and not the tooling required to do it. Cons Git-based development/management was a major disadvantage. With the new SDK, that's solved for the most part. There may be some very advanced requirements that aren't supported by the Vellum tooling, but there is likely some 'today' workarounds and 'tomorrow' fully baked solves. Reasons for choosing Vellum Production grade. You can use Vellum to develop production-grade products. Not just hobby projects. The whole team is able to test and implement and has accelerated our roadmap. Pros We have immensely benefited from the UI workflow builder when narrowing in on our AI workflows. It gives us a centralized way to quickly test and try different prompts and models and see what impact it would have and what we feel comfortable deploying for our customers. The alternatives were too code heavy, this on the other-hand shortens the loop where anyone with an idea can test and then quickly move to production. Cons We have not been able to fully leverage their eval solution. Reasons for choosing Vellum The UI builder and document referencer was key for us. We have had great customer service and they are constantly pushing new updates. Pros The ability to create complex AI workflows without knowing to code. The drag and drop is my favorite part of the application. Being able to quickly deploy entire workflows is super valuable. Also, the ability to reference documents directly as input variables without using document loaders has been unique to Vellum. Cons The evaluation UI is a little less developed than other platforms like LangChain. Sometimes things won't save in the sandbox. Also, have experienced some general lag in the system. Pros Vellum lets me quickly mock out complex prompt pipelines before investing in development work. I love the pipeline UI. What used to require handwritten diagrams and reams of Google Docs is now a simple drag and drop. Vellum's documentation and LLM educational materials are also top notch. Cons My usage is fairly narrow because I'm not a developer and only use Vellum for prototyping. Many capabilities in Vellum aren't relevant to our needs or would require too much time to investigate/ a "solution looking for a problem" approach. The workflows allow you to build "drag and drop" agentic flows in the Web UI easily. Cons Of all the things Vellum offers, the evals could probably be better. It's just a trade off of tools. There are some dedicated eval products in the market that optimize solely for the eval portion. Vellum's eval suite lags a bit behind market offerings but Vellum's strength is the integration of evals and coupling them with workflows. For other products, you need to send their data over. It didn’t just streamline our workflow—it transformed how our team collaborates and builds with AI. Before Vellum, prompt engineering slowed us down and caused misalignment. Now, dev and management can work in parallel, saving us weeks of development time. Management can even test and tweak prompts themselves, making everything smoother. We especially love the workflow tools and function calling—they made it possible to build a smart chatbot in our Bubble app, which felt out of reach before. Vellum didn’t just improve our process—it leveled up our whole team. Cons Honestly, not much! I know Vellum is still early-stage, and it's clear the team is moving fast and listening to users. That said, the UX around workflows could definitely be more intuitive. Right now, it’s a bit clunky to add steps or test chatbot interactions directly within a workflow. I’d love to see a more seamless, in-context testing experience—especially because the rest of the platform feels so powerful. I’m confident they’ll get there soon, and when they do, it’ll take the product to a whole new level.
