The off-season competitions (I.e., winter wipeout and summer smasher) have been great workout motivators. They've kept me consistent and intentional with my training. I'm now at a 365 day continuous streak, checking in and posting workouts and stretches. The UI design also makes it easy to also connect with other teammates over workouts. Cons I wish the app did have a pinned announcement board. Sometimes coaches want to show us documents, like excel sheets, outside CrewLab. This platform helped my team to get back on its feet and I am so glad I get to keep using it! Pros I first interacted with CrewLAB when my college rowing team started using it in fall 2024 (my junior fall). My team was struggling with retention and we were in need of something to help us gain morale and drive accountability. The ability to post workout reflections and photos as well as engage with my teammates’ posts immediately drew me to the platform. We were able to ditch the shared Google Drive “vid review” folder and consolidate video in the app. I noticed even more value as we entered our first off season. At the DIII level, coaches aren’t allowed to interact with athletes during the winter in any coaching capacity. This can obviously make it super challenging for athletes to stay accountable and bought in. CrewLAB was a great way for us to schedule captains practices and track attendance/progress. My team also took the Winter Wipeout and Summer Smasher challenges very seriously. It helped to keep the energy high and drive some healthy off-water competition. When I graduated, I was so sad to leave the college CrewLAB group. BUT I kept rowing after college and I was so excited when my post-collegiate team joined CrewLAB. I am such a fan and I cannot say enough good things. Cons I have a Garmin and a WHOOP and I love how my Garmin automatically uploads my workouts to CrewLAB. One thing I’d really like to see is that type of integration with WHOOP. I use my WHOOP for lifting in particular and it would be easier to not manually upload data. The arc you described; being on a struggling team in 2024, working through Winter Wipeout and Summer Smasher, building morale and accountability, graduating, and then bringing CrewLAB into your post-collegiate team, is exactly what we built CrewLAB to do. Keep people in the sport, and enjoying it. The "Google Drive vid review folder" line. That's the status quo we exist to replace, and you put it perfectly. WHOOP integration is on our radar. You're not the only one asking, and it's the kind of integration that makes sense for athletes who exercise seriously. Our coaching staff and athletes enjoy using it, appreciate its accessibility and ease of use, and have become a more tightly knit unit. Pros I like the fact that CrewLAB was created by rowing coaches and athletes whose goal is to make being part of a rowing program more enjoyable, effective, and efficient for current coaches and athletes. I also like the fact that the athletes can post comments about how they are feeling mentally and physically each day upon completion of their workouts. It is interesting to see what they have to say because they seem to be more forthcoming with their comments using the app than in-person. The athletes look forward to seeing what each other has to say from day to day with regard to the workouts and it helps the coaches in planning workouts based on how the athletes are feeling from day to day and week to week. It has definitely enhanced our athletes' accountability to themselves and to the team. That's the outcome across a whole rowing program, not one squad, and reading it from a Director of Rowing means a lot. The lineup-and-workout-and-video integration ask is the third time I've heard a version of this from a senior coach in the last few weeks. Three independent collegiate rowing programs raising the same workflow gap tells us it's a real one, not an edge case. It's on the roadmap. I can't promise a timeline yet, but feedback like yours is what will shape it when we build it. Your point about athletes being more forthcoming in the app than in person is one of the things that makes the daily wellness check-ins do their work — and it's probably part of why you're seeing the team-depth result.
