Overall, my experience with GitKraken Desktop has been positive. It is a polished and user-friendly Git client that makes source control much easier to navigate, especially for visual learners or teams that want a smoother workflow than the command line alone. While it is not perfect in terms of performance, pricing, or advanced edge cases, it does a very good job of simplifying everyday Git operations and improving productivity.

Pros

Clean UI, intuitive workflow, and excellent branch visualization. It makes everyday Git tasks much easier and less stressful.

Cons

What I liked least about GitKraken Desktop is that it can sometimes feel a bit heavy, especially when working with larger repositories or more complex branch histories.

My experience using GitKraken has been genuinely positive, and improved now with its AI capabilities. The integration feels practical rather than just for show it supports real development workflows instead of interrupting them. The AI features reduce friction in everyday Git operations, especially when navigating complex histories, writing meaningful commit messages, or resolving uncertainty during version control tasks. What stands out most is how the tool enhances productivity without forcing a change in how developers traditionally work with Git. It respects established practices while providing intelligent assistance where it matters.

Pros

The AI features help with commit messages, explanations, and workflow clarity, solving real developer pain points. The interface remains intuitive even with AI features enabled. Nothing feels hidden or over-engineered. Helpful guidance reduces hesitation when working with rebases, merges, or complex histories.

Cons

Teams that only use basic Git features may not experience the full benefit. While easy to start, getting the most value requires intentional exploration.

After 20 years of working with version control, GitKraken Desktop has become my essential Git tool. The visual commit graph is absolutely my favorite feature - it makes understanding repository history and branch relationships crystal clear at a glance. The AI integration is a real productivity booster. It generates thoughtful commit messages automatically, saving me from one of the most tedious parts of version control. The AI also helps explain commits in plain language, which is invaluable during code reviews. GitKraken makes creating commits smooth and intuitive, and the whole workflow just feels right. Plus, it's fairly priced for the tremendous value it delivers. If you want a Git client that combines powerful visualization, smart AI assistance, and an excellent user experience, GitKraken Desktop is hard to beat.

Pros

The visual commit graph is outstanding - it makes complex repository histories instantly understandable.

Cons

I'm hard-pressed to find significant drawbacks. GitKraken delivers exactly what I need in a Git client, and the team continues to improve it with thoughtful features.

I’ve had a really great experience using GitKraken Desktop, mainly because of how easy and comfortable it is to work with on a daily basis. It’s one of those tools that just stays out of your way and lets you focus on your work. One thing I really like is how simple it is to switch between different profiles. I use a work profile, a teacher profile, and a personal one, and managing repositories across all of them is smooth and hassle-free. I never feel like I’m fighting the tool or reconfiguring things all the time. The commit graph deserves special mention. Honestly, it’s the best I’ve used. Being able to visually follow changes, see where something came from, and understand how a branch evolved has saved me a lot of time. This has been especially useful when working with larger teams spread across different cities, where understanding who did what (and when) really matters. GitKraken has also been a lifesaver when it comes to code reviews and merge conflicts. The merge and conflict views make even messy situations much easier to understand. I’ve managed to solve conflicts that had my teammates stuck and frustrated, and a few times that alone made a big difference for the whole team. I’ve also used GitKraken in class projects, and the Gitflow support is great for teaching. The visual explanations help a lot, and the AI features that explain commit histories make reviewing long chains of changes much less painful. This has been really helpful during one-on-one meetings and code reviews. Overall, GitKraken just feels solid and well thought out. I’ve been using it since the early days, and it’s been great to see how much it has improved over time. It’s easily one of my favorite tools for working with Git, and I’m genuinely happy to keep using it.

Pros

Multiple profiles support, switching between work, teaching, and personal profiles is seamless. Managing different repositories and credentials never feels messy. Best-in-class commit graph, the visual commit graph makes it incredibly easy to understand project history, track changes, and see how branches evolved over time. Excellent for team collaboration, works great for coordinating large teams, even when people are spread across different cities or locations. Great merge conflict resolution, the merge and conflict resolution views are clear and practical, helping solve complex conflicts without the usual frustration. Strong code review experience, reviewing changes and understanding commits is straightforward, which improves collaboration and reduces mistakes.

Cons

On less powerful hardware, GitKraken may use noticeable memory or feel slower compared to very lightweight Git clients. If you prefer doing everything in the command line, GitKraken might feel unnecessary or slower than just using Git directly. While basic usage is easy, more complex workflows (like advanced Gitflow scenarios or conflict resolution) still take some time to fully understand. Repositories with huge histories or many branches can sometimes make the UI feel a bit less responsive.

I have been using GitKraken desktop for years and I always suggest it to colleagues or during conference talks. The monthly cost is worth every penny.

Pros

GitKraken offers the best users experience available for a source control GUI. It simplify hard operations like conflicts and rebasing. Everything in GitKraken is only one click away. GitKraken is also extremely fast. I have been using it with some very large project that fail to load with other software but work perfectly in this desktop application.

Cons

There are lots of features. This is not a negative aspect, but it can take some time to learn it all.

Overall, my experience with GitKraken Desktop has been very positive. The interface is clean and intuitive, which makes complex Git workflows easier to visualize and manage. The commit graph and branch visualization are particularly helpful for understanding the state of the repository and reviewing history. I also appreciate how common actions like staging, amending commits, resolving merge conflicts, and managing remotes are streamlined into a few clear interactions. There are occasional performance hiccups with very large repositories, but in general the tool is stable and reliable, and it has significantly improved my daily Git workflow.

Pros

Easy to use, easy to merge/rebase branches. Easy integrations with existing repo like azure, git and very useful merge viewer

Cons

Performance can slow down with very large repositories and extensive commit histories. So it's a good practice to maintain clean your repo.
