OnStyle

## What is OnStyle?

OnStyle is a Microsoft Word add-in that automates document formatting and style enforcement. It applies predefined rule sets to enforce formatting consistency, verify hyperlinks and references, and check compliance with internal or industry standards. The software identifies structural and layout inconsistencies, broken hyperlinks, unauthorized style changes, unresolved tracked changes, and other formatting issues. Validation is performed through configurable inspection modules, and many identified issues can be corrected automatically. By automating quality checks, OnStyle enables the production of compliant documents. OnStyle simplifies complex formatting tasks and improves document quality, supporting standardized document editing.

I am satisfied with OnStyle, was easy to integrate into my Word as an add-in, could use immediately. I would suggest to check their YouTube site (or one of the AI chat engines) to catch up faster with their functionality.

Pros

I have been working as a consultant in B2B / Enterprise environment, with the frequent need of dealing with documents of various quality (different sources, different format, different style, etc) that must be compiled and processed to be client-ready. And "perception is reality", in this environment the quality of outputs are also considered as a measure of value. OnStyle helps maintaining a higher standard of word (->pdf) documents, without much time investment, already during editing and without involving any other system than Microsoft Word. Handy, fast - 1 click functions immediately. I personally like the mass comment exporting function (you know how time consuming that can be when negotiating contracts & product specs) and also the abbreviation + table of content creation. They are just smarter and faster than coping with those manually.

Cons

Once you learnt how to use it (eg. I checked their videos), extremely easy to use. For new functions (and there are many I have not thought of) onboarding is not so obvious, requires time. Its value may depend on how often you create documents and what is the expected output quality.

OnStyle has made my job easier and better. Taking over much of the painstaking tasks of editing and formatting allows me to be more creative with my writing, and does this with speed and accuracy.

Pros

As a seasoned medical and scientific writer who has worked at Merck as a Medical Communications writer, I have been responsible for over 80 published manuscripts (many were as a named author). I have also worked as a lead regulatory medical writer, writing, managing, and facilitating submission documents for several approved therapeutics. Finally (but not least!), I have worked at Seattle Genetics as a promotional review writer and manager. Currently, I am a CEO and lead editor for an LLC that assists graduate students with their theses and dissertations. In each of these positions, I have used Word add-ons to help facilitate my work. I have used several different Word add-ons, most of which have proved very useful. The software programs used in these positions were developed specifically for their company's writers. As such, each had both useful aspects that made the applications easier. For all the large pharmaceutical companies, these Word add-ons were useful for the documents we worked with. Still, they had functional, speed, and efficiency problems that required extra time to figure out when we strayed from the ones used most frequently. That created a significant problem with the speed and quality of the process workflow. In contrast, I have recently employed the OnStyle add-on for much of my current work. This provides me with more efficient, faster, and more accurate formatting and editing of my writing. It is highly adaptable for different document types. What I enjoy most about the OnStyle software is its versatility across different documents. It is programmed to be compliant with most document types and strategies; it is easy to customize templates using predefined layouts; finally, it is amazing how formatting and editing for each document type can be easily, quickly, and accurately automated so that these tasks can be accomplished with the simple touch of a single key. As a medical writer judged on the quality and speed of my documents, I LOVE the OnStyle software!

Cons

There isn't much that I don't like about OnStyle. My biggest "issue" with OnStyle was its inability to be used by an individual writer who might not be associated with a large company. Thankfully, they recently addressed this issue by creating a version that is available and affordable for individual writers.
