Jitsu

## What is Jitsu?

Jitsu moves event data from where it is created to where it is analysed. It collects from websites, mobile apps and server-side systems, reshapes each event with JavaScript functions running inline, and delivers to warehouses, analytics tools and ad platforms. Billing is metered on events that reach a destination. Anything filtered out costs nothing, and seats and destinations are never charged, so the invoice tracks traffic rather than headcount. Segment API compatibility lets existing SDK calls be repointed without rewriting instrumentation. Managed ClickHouse is included from the free tier, so events are queryable straight away. Identity stitching resolves anonymous and known activity to one profile, and custom domains keep collection first-party. Run it on Jitsu Cloud, on a dedicated single-tenant cloud, or self-hosted. The MIT licence permits offering it to third parties as a hosted service. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest and Jitsu is SOC 2 compliant.

Really great! The transformation function is really helpful and the pricing is very competitive. Overall the product is smooth and support is good too, although we rarely needed it. A very good candidate in the space!

Pros

We strip email addresses and IP addresses using transformation functions before any data reaches our warehouse. With our previous vendor, filtering happened after ingestion, meaning the raw values still landed in their system regardless of what we wanted, and getting rid of them meant opening a support ticket instead of changing code. Now those fields never get written in the first place, which fundamentally shifts what our security review actually has to check. If we need to strip a new field, it's a one-line change and a single deploy.

Cons

Jitsu has no tracking plan and no validation layer, so nothing stops a renamed or malformed property from flowing straight through to the destination. We wrote a transformation function that rejects events failing our own field checks and it works fine, but that should be a toggle in the product.

Switched from

[Segment](https://www.capterra.com/p/150621/Segment/)

The pricing was better and event volume based that isn't what others offer.

Alternatives considered

[Hightouch](https://www.capterra.com/p/241212/Hightouch/)

Reasons for choosing Jitsu

The pricing was better and event volume based that isn't what others offer. Their transformation function feature is a game changer.

Pros

Jitsu bills on active events and captured events are unlimited, which reads like a pricing detail and turned out to change how we build.

Cons

The destination catalogue is thinner than the large vendors offer. We wanted one specific destination and it was not there, so we wired it up through a webhook ourselves.

Pros

Two things. Transformation functions are JavaScript we keep in version control and deploy like anything else, so filtering logic gets reviewed in a pull request instead of being clicked into a settings page nobody remembers touching. The second is that we drop bot and crawler traffic in the pipeline, so it never reaches our warehouse and never enters our reporting. Previously that traffic landed first and we cleaned it up in dbt afterwards, which meant every dashboard carried a filter somebody could forget to apply.

Cons

Crossing the free tier is a hard stop rather than an overage. When we went past the included volume, delivery stopped instead of degrading or simply billing us for the excess, so a traffic spike became an incident rather than an invoice. We are on a paid plan now and it does not affect us, but anyone running close to a tier boundary should know that is the behaviour.

Alternatives considered

[Snowplow BDP](https://www.capterra.com/p/186343/Snowplow-Insights/)

[RudderStack](https://www.capterra.com/p/201870/RudderStack/)

Reasons for choosing Jitsu

Licensing decided it. We needed to run it inside our own infrastructure, and RudderStack's Elastic License 2.0 restricts providing the software to third parties as a hosted or managed service. Snowplow's Community Edition has its own limited-use licence. Jitsu is MIT, so the question never came up.
