Comments: I have actually used Neon CRM in two very different nonprofits. One was previously using eTapestry and we switched because of the greater flexibility offered by Neon. That organization received much of its funding from individuals and was focused on one main program. The second was a transportation think tank that had no previous CRM system and received much of its funding through memberships. In both cases, I have found the system to work well and meet the needs of two very different organizations.

Pros: The interface is easy to use, very similar to comparable CRM systems in terms of flexibility and customization, but built for fundraising. The customization, in particular, is easy to understand and flexible enough to work for a variety of applications in a variety of nonprofits. I like the automation features as well, such as with donation appreciation and membership renewal reminders.

Cons: The single log on functionality and link with Wordpress needs to be further developed, I think. Sometimes the integrations with other systems, like MailChimp, are not as robust as I would like.

Hi Karen,

Thank you for your review. We always love hearing how NeonCRM's versatility can help vastly different nonprofits!

We are also glad to hear you are using the Wordpress single sign on plugin. We appreciate your feedback. We will be making improvements and enhancements to it regularly.

Over the next year you can expect deeper enhancements to our existing integrations and many more great new integration offerings to come. For example, last month we announced we are officially part of Zapier¿s beta testing program. Zapier is essentially a system that connects systems, so this really opens up opportunities to connect Neon with many other platforms. Our blog post about it is below:

Feel free to contact us if you have additional questions about it!

Comments: We chose this software because it appeared to be able to do everything we needed it to. However, when getting into it more fully we consistently run into obstacles.

Pros: Good database function, automated emails, customized reporting.

Cons: We utilize the event module extensively and find that the functionality is difficult. The WYSIWYG feature to build an event page is difficult, you can't build sub pages for an event, no ability to have event add-on items (register for the event and buy a shirt, etc). I've had to add them into the store function and then make all events appear in the store function so that the add-on items would appear in the shopping cart with the registration - but there is no ability to customize a store item (i.e. personalization). The registration function is very confusing to our constituents in that you have to provide all information for the registrant before making the registration/ticket selection. Then the only place to put the add-on/store items is in the event registration summary page. The social fundraising functions are not terribly user friendly and intuitive. When you want to do registration discounts you can either take $ off or % off of the entire order - not off each registration when more than 1 person is registered. When I have asked about these features it has been suggested that we use Eventbright for events. We left event bright when we purchased NEON because we could save the costs with the integrated functions in NEON. Eventbright doesn't do social fundraising so this looked like a better option. And finally - duplicate accounts are a problem - especially because pricing is based upon the number of accounts. Merging/deleting accounts is a time consuming process. And, you cannot simply two accounts that should be merged (because you know they should be) unless the system identifies them based upon duplicate name, email, etc. For example - if a person registered using her home email and address for one event and then the next time she registered as that person's name using her work email the system won't recognize them as potential duplicates - and you can't manually select them to merge. The login feature we thought was good but unless you have memberships it isn't great - folks just don't log back in the next time the visit the site - they just create a new account.

Recommendations to other buyers: Try before you buy! Ask lots of questions and know clearly what you need the system to do for you before you buy.

Hi Shauna,

We¿re sorry to hear about the difficulties you have experienced with functionality. We appreciate your feedback and take into account customer suggestions when considering product developments.

We will be reaching out directly to further discuss your duplicate management pains and to better understand your event registration items. There are deeper duplicate scans that can be useful, and we of course want to hear from you about how the event registration process might be simplified. In the last month, we've come out with an enhanced template feature for social fundraising for more customization and usability--we will also send you info on this.

Again, thank you for your valuable comments and please know we are always striving to improve the system and its functionality to better serve nonprofits. It's feedback like yours that helps us to plan for our monthly product releases. We appreciate having Star Legacy Foundation as part of the Neon community. We truly understand the importance of your mission and want to ensure NeonCRM can be effective in furthering stillbirth awareness.

Our Account Management team will be in touch, but please know you can contact them if you have future questions or concerns.

Pros: From the beginning, their customer service was outstanding. In our research phase to find a new CRM vendor, we contacted at least 1 dozen different companies. We provided the sales people with an extensive list that outlined the data that we collect, as well as our database needs. Some companies looked at the list and upfront said that they couldn't provide what we needed. Others never bothered to contact us at all. Most sad, the fundraising software/donation processing company that we've been with for more than a decade never contacted us to let us know about their new services, they only increased our annual fees and decreased functionality. So NeonCRM emerged as one of our top choices very early on. Best yet, in talking to their sales person, and now our account manager, as well as their data consultants, they work with us to discuss and figure out solutions. For example, for many years we have used our database as a way to check of tasks in the data collection process. NeonCRM helped us to figure out if we needed a combination of data points or a process document to ensure that all of our users entered consistent information. That kind of collaboration and solution-based thinking has been immensely helpful. More so, given that we have planned for our data migration to happen over 2 years, with specific benchmarks. It feels like NeonCRM will be there with us all the way. One of our Board members is an engineer, and the way that NeonCRM does consultation allowed us to invite our Board member and our web site builder and designer into the meetings. That way we could all learn and develop solutions at the same time. Best yet, we've been able to work with NeonCRM staff, from sales to data consultants, who actually understood arts nonprofits, so they understand what to do with our earned income. Other companies were best for health or educational nonprofits, or advocacy & policy nonprofits, or some other kind of nonprofit. To have a team that understands the work that we do, the size of our organizations, the ways that our events function, and is willing to work with us to meet our needs (instead of trying to cram us into their system), made all the difference.

Cons: There are bits of functionality that other companies have that we would like. Such as the ability to tweet or make facebook posts, and track that information, from within the CRM, something that Nation Builder does really well. We would also like to be able to integrate silent and online auctions into fundraising efforts, but this is not something that can be done just yet. Finally, we would like to have our ecommerce products tied to their makers, something that NeonCRM can't do. However, they provided us with an API integration solution that will work in the meantime.

Recommendations to other buyers: Think this through thoroughly. We spent months reading the literature about data, including "Weaponized Data: How The Obsession With Data Has Been Hurting Marginalized Communities" by Vu Le, and "Dabbling In The Data: A Hands-on Guide to Participatory Data Analysis" by Public Profit. We also spent time looking at the reviews of different kinds of software, read the Idealware reports, and looked at real costs. NeonCRM was the easiest to customize and most accessible for all of our different users, from Board members to volunteers, which means that they will use it consistently, and make us more efficiently, and more effective as an organization. Oh, and DON'T let anyone tell you, SalesForce is free, it is NOT free, when you look at costs for customization, licenses (if you use the NGO version), and training. Give yourself lots of time for the process of picking a company. Give yourself more time to build the system to your needs, migrate your data, and train your staff. Pay attention to all of the costs: staff time for the data initiative, staff time for research, staff time for training, build in the monthly/annual costs of the system, and create a budget for training and data consultation (don't try to do it all yourself).

Good program, but reporting is less intuitive than I'd like.

Pros: The software has a lot of really useful features, like email blasts and the reports are really customizable.

Cons: The software isn't terribly intuitive, especially with reporting, and the training videos on YouTube are hours long. I also could not find the answers I needed in the help section when trying to customize reports. I learned more from the user forums than the actual help feature of the software.

Recommendations to other buyers: Probably not appropriate for users with very basic computer skills. It takes a lot of time, perseverance, and patience to get the reports to do what you want them to do. Also, the reports can be buggy, so you really need to have a good idea of what your data looks like when you set the reports up to ensure the output isn't bogus.

Thanks so much for your review of NeonCRM, Holly! We are absolutely thrilled to be part of Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary's mission in helping animals be rescued, rehabilitated, and/or adopted. We did want to take this opportunity to respond to your review personally and alongside Leigh's which is featured immediately below. :)

In the age of simple apps on our phones and an increasing awareness of user-friendliness with complex technology, we are 1000% committed to making the user experience of NeonCRM as simple as possible for users of all strengths and experiences. As an "expert-user" database that does so many complicated things, we are constantly challenged with keeping things simple while also continuing to provide the deepest, most extensive CRM built specifically for nonprofits. We now have a dedicated, in-house team focused purely on this challenge and you will continue to see NeonCRM evolve with new feature releases and enhancements every month! We welcome your continued input within our community forum as we consider new and great feature suggestions to implement.

We also appreciate your comments on the training videos as well. You and other clients were right: they were too long. And, in our continued efforts to improve every client's implementation of NeonCRM, we have just revamped our training curriculum and have updated all of our training videos on our YouTube channel. We have trimmed a lot, provided time-marking slides, provided agendas with companion guides, and more. The main difference is our trainings have taken a new, "task-based" approach now which we hope you will find useful, including with respect to your comments concerning Neon's deep reporting functionality. Please visit these training resources directly within your Neon system or here: https://z2.zendesk.com/entries/21682010-Training-Videos

Lastly, we are overjoyed that you were able to find our community forums so useful! We truly love our Neon expert clients who take time to participate and share their wealth of knowledge in the forums. Sometimes it is more useful to get advice from peer-level organizations who might be using a particular facet of Neon the same way as your organization.

We encourage you to continue using a combination of our training resources, guides, and community forums to make Neon work best in helping Happy Trails keep the animals neighing, mooing, clucking, gobbling, baaa'ing, maa'ing, and squealing in joy.

Our staff is full of animal lovers and we have many-a-pets that have been rescued from shelters by our staff, along with NeonCRM serving many similar shelters and organizations that help all of our furry creatures in need. Thanks again!

Pros: I have had my NeonCRM system now for about four months, and what I love the most about it is probably its elegance. It's like the designers sat in my office, watched me work, and then designed a system that would not only take care of the many things I need when working with our donors, but also thought of a whole lot more! The system is very comprehensive, and while it is quite large and will take many more months to completely master, it is consistent. This consistency throughout makes it relatively easy to learn to work, even in the beginning.

Cons: The thing I have found the most frustrating is that I run a Mac, and this system is more compatible with PC. For instance, I could not run the tutorials on my Mac, so I had to haul out an old PC laptop for my training webinars. It worked out okay, as I could be working on the Mac in the program while watching the tutorial on the PC, but we Mac users get frustrated with these situations. Later, I learned that the internal mail merger program would not work on anything but Internet Explorer, which is unfortunately no longer available for Mac. It would have been nice if we could have at least had Firefox or Chrome, both very commonly used browsers, as an option. This is not a deal breaker for me, but for the price and quality of the system, I would have liked more compatibility.

Recommendations to other buyers: The most daunting thing about the system is the number of hours it takes to learn to use it and then get it set up. The webinars are amazing and quite helpful, but I probably spent 40-60 hrs just learning the ropes and getting it put together before I could even begin to use it. Seriously consider who is going to do this. Once done, you need that person to be able to create new things and change old things, so the knowledge of how to run the system is very valuable. If that person leaves, who will take it over?

by Z2 Systems on September 08, 2014

Sheri, we really appreciate the kind words and positive review, but also thank you for the constructive feedback to make our processes better.

We've heard you and other Mac users loud and clear in regards to accessing the recorded trainings. Where NeonCRM obviously works just fine on PCs and Macs, the webinar provider we work with only renders our recordings in a PC-compatible format. Due to this limitation of our webinar partner, we have made the decision to stream all NeonCRM trainings on YouTube to ensure Mac users and all NeonCRM users have easy access to all training sessions. We'll be having your account manager reach out directly to you to provide this resource directly and these can be accessed with a simple search on YouTube.

In regards to the Microsoft Word mail merge functionality you brought up, that direct push from NeonCRM to Microsoft Word is actually something that is dictated by Microsoft, not us, since they want people to be using Internet Explorer. Unfortunately, Chrome, Firefox, and all other browsers are unable to receive a direct push from any system directly into Microsoft Word. We are looking to see if there's a way around it and will of course let you know. Of course, you can always use the built-in NeonCRM mail merge templates or export to Excel/csv to perform the mail merge externally as well. So there are options!

Again, thank you for the amazing feedback and look forward to growing with you for years to come.

Comments: If your experience is anything like mine was, you are currently struggling with outdated software. You are having to maintain multiple databases manually in order to do all the things that are standard operating procedures in these fast-paced days, and you are working on a shoestring budget with a great but stretched staff. For me, this is where Neon came in to help us. Is it perfect. No. Of course not. Unless you have a zillion dollars to house your own tech department you are unlikely to find absolute perfection. Is Neon, in my opinion, the closest thing to perfect for a non-profit organization? Yes! Why do I think that? 1) Technology upgrades every 18 months (at the longest) which is almost impossible for a non-profit to keep up with while remaining competitive within today's business world. Neon is an ever-evolving system that shares functionality with all Neon clients; your membership database is always up-to-date with new innovations appearing and available to be customized to meet your needs for reasonable pricing (unlike other systems that, in my experience, started customization at around $25,000 a piece). 2) When hosting our own CRM on-site, we were responsible for maintaining our server; with an aging server and without a hardware specialist on staff, our data was always at risk, even though it was backed up. With Neon, our system is now a cloud-based system, leaving the hardware support to the experts at Neon. This was not only a worry off our backs but also a fiscal savings. 3) In order to keep up to date, we were maintaining multiple databases. We had our member database, our event database, our website member-only database, and our email database. This doesn't include the QuickBooks upkeep and our area membership lists that had to be maintained and exported separately on a monthly basis. Needless to say, this ate up a lot of time and was susceptible to human error. With Neon, everything was in one place (Please note we chose to use Neon's email because another service would mean we once again would have to import/export data and not have the tracking material on the records where we wanted them). This was a huge benefit. Having everything available in one place freed up our staff to work on other projects and spend time on long-term strategic planning as opposed to just working in the moment. 4) With our old system, we were the experts. We were all alone. If we wanted customer service, the vendor could sort of help but the service teams wouldn't take time to understand the way we were using the system and could only provide generic answers. With Neon, we have experts at the end of a chat or a phone call (depending on your needs and service package) who can log into your system, see what you are seeing, and team with you to find an answer to your issues. 5) With our old system, our volunteers and members had limited abilities and options available to them. With Neon, our volunteers and members have a greater level of interaction with their own records, as well as with each other. So with all that said, my overall advice is get Neon. But when you do jump in also be realistic and patient with both Neon and your staff. Remember change is always hard. Expect that the transfer of data will be stressful. Expect that the first six months will include hiccups. Expect that in a year you will be an expert in NEON. Expect that your "sophomore" year experience will make it all worthwhile.

Pros: I won't comment on the other features NEON does that other systems do as well - or almost as well. Instead, I'll focus on the factors that set them apart from the other players on the market.

FORMS! - how can any org look past the ability to survey their constituents via email and then have the responses post to the database? e.g. How did you hear about us? a - k / What most interests you about our work? a.b.c. d. free form response / How would you like us to communicate with you? a - d

Events! NEON is the industry leader in allowing users to enter info via an org's website and into the database. I have one client using NEON that registers athletic event users via their website - all the way down to the waiver release form via a digital signature. All that info results in a paperless process that posts to their website on the back end.

Training - online video training is FREE - you won't get that with eTapestry or DonorPerfect.

Cons: The reports function features a URL for a particular report (dynamic too). This is is fantastic! But many board members and volunteers need to be reminded to access the url and it would be great if NEON would schedule the delivery of reports on an ongoing basis rather than the user having to schedule the delivery of the reports. A small thing, but one less thing the user has to think about doing.

Overall: You want CRM software to do 3 things:

1. Safely store you data

2. Allow you to leverage your data

3. Allow you to interact with your organizations website

Most systems do the first 2 - they better (!), NEON does the third one too and better than any other product in the industry. My only hope is they don't get bought by Blackbaud.

I've done 15 or more conversions with many different product and have never been happier than with NEON. Feel free to drop me a line and I'll share more with you.

Thanks Mike! we appreciate your review! As for the ability to email reports out to board members, you can set up an account in NEON, create a recurring activity to have NEON email your board member with the dynamic report link on, for example, the first of the month every month.

And as for the comment about the BBaud buyout, no chance. :) We're in this for the long haul to create the best cloud based CRM for nonprofits and to ensure we offer it for less. Plus, NEON is built as an All-in-One platform that can house fundraising/donors, membership/members, events/registrants and track all of this in one system. Plus, our frontend connectivity to nonprofit's websites allows everything to funnel right into NEON automatically. Times are changing and there is no longer a need to spend so much for powerful software and IT staff to manage servers.

NEON, by Z2 systems, Inc., is here to stay and evolve with the technology needs of the Nonprofit industry. Count on it!

Pros: NeonCRM is very robust in its comprehensive capabilities to manage every aspect of fundraising, reporting, tracking, lead generation and just plain constituent management process. For Veterans Miracle Center Erie, the offerings of NeonCRM's full suite of modules was well-above our necessity at the time we implemented it, and at a cost that would make any non-profit cheer. The optional modules available for growth allows the VMCE to grow at a solid-yet-comfortable rate, with confidence that our CRM can grow with us. Additional features for mass-emailing and event management are just some of the additional options we look forward to. For those seeking to have organizational excellence, this tool will allow you to cross items of the "accomplished tasks" list every day and breathe a sigh of relief. There are countless videos, articles, and DIY options available should your organization not have the budget for one-on-one guidance from NeonCRM's support.

Cons: Filtering data down to a very specific subset of constituents, donations and campaigns for further analysis is key to the non-profit world. NeonCRM is very powerful for drilling down to mine out the gold needed. However, if your organization does NOT purchase the conversion support and general support, a person who is tech-savvy and patient ought to be selected to carefully read the very thorough SOPS and knowledge base articles provided by NeonCRM. It really isn't a complaint - just be prepared accordingly to either spend the additional funds for proper support, or know that you are at the mercy of someone to teach your remaining staff how to build and pull custom reports. Please note that the system does feature a TON of pre-fab reports, so you won't be at a loss even in your newness to NeonCRM.

Recommendations to other buyers: Our recommendation is to look at the best options available at your organization's current size and budget. How many contact records do you honestly have right now...will they all be counted as a contact? What is your organization's 5 year growth plan? Will there be further emphasis on social media marketing? Does the software have a component to help with that? Ask what the organization is trying to do, and then find a CRM that helps you to crush those goals:)

Comments: We are an environmental educational nonprofit. We provide many educational events for our members and the public to learn how to identify and manage noxious weeds. We also provide educational publications. We made the decision to leave our other system after increase fees and what we felt was decreased interest in smaller nonprofits after they were purchased by another vendor. We also did not like the fact each year when we did events their system did not allow us to customize things ourselves using their system but required us to get out the checkbook and pay them to do so. We initially bought the base plus two modules with Neon in 2011. We purchased the website shell overlay. The second year we expanded to the full product. We did our own data conversion in less than 30 days. We brought over the history of membership and events that we had exported into Excel spreadsheets. We felt the conversion was very easy. The vendor was there for help, though it was easy enough and well documented such that we did not require much help. We learned to use the system quickly using their documentation, videos, and knowledge-based website and forums. Honestly, for the most part, the system has been intuitive. Their customer service rocks. We use the ticket system exclusively, and they have provided responses in a timely and professional manner. We really appreciate that their help desk appears to have a stable employee base with low turnover, so we feel that they know us. More importantly, the development team at Neon seems to want to grow this product by listening and making regular system changes that reflect the changing needs of NPOs. Each year when we renew, we can always think of a thing or two that happened that makes us glad again we are with Neon. We have benefited by being with a system that listens to their user base. I see things that we have suggested incorporated into the system. There are twice a year updates that we can depend on, which are documented and announced (unlike our old system, which dropped things in unannounced, and then we would have problems and not be able to figure out why). Releases have been fully tested and it is not buggy software. We have saved money for our nonprofit by reducing the number of SAS vendors we deal with. We have improved efficiency and understanding of our donors and members as we have brought all of relationship interfaces to a single database. When we pull up a donor, we now know what they bought, when they last donated, if they are a member, how long they have been a member, which events they have attended, and more. This has been a great economic move for us, but it has turned into an even better strategic move that will allow us to better understand all those we interface with, which will in turn allow us to better fulfill our mission .

Overall: We are a small charity and had never used crm before so we decided to jump in, primarily at first to register people for an event. It is not intuitive or user-friendly. There are training videos you have to watch before you can call in, but 45 minutes into them, they only answer the most basic questions. Forget customizing your forms or registration. We are not IT people who spend all day writing code so we find it difficult and sometimes impossible to use. The social fundraising has been a nightmare as people who set up a team find themselves unable to join their own team! I don't know what we're doing wrong but we find this really hard to use. We've tried our best for over a year now so feel like we gave it a good chance.

Thank you for your review, Barbara. We understand the shortage of time in each day, especially working with so many small charities like yours.

We care very deeply about each and every one of our nonprofit partners and take any negative feedback very personally...and seriously.

We here at NeonCRM pride ourselves on providing a powerful, yet intuitive program for all of our nonprofit partners -- big and small (as illustrated w/ many 5-star review ratings for "ease of use" above and below this post).

Comments: Overall, a great system which I'm glad we found. We tried a few others to manage our 3 levels of membership, and none of them lived up to the sales pitch. NeonCRM has so far.

Pros: It can do a lot in terms of membership: Allow new members to join, current and expired members to renew, membership discounts, etc. It's quite affordable, too, and the customer support seems solid so far.

Cons: Running reports can be difficult because there are so many possible data fields that a member can have. I've had considerable difficulty, for example, finding members who signed up--who didn't renew and weren't past members--between certain dates. It's probably just one or two fields in the report that I haven't included, but it's quite frustrating. And though the online help center has a lot of content, I've had to contact support several times because I couldn't find what I was looking for online. We set up our system in about a week and a half--significantly faster than the recommended timeframe. I have considerable experience with CRMs, and most small organizations would likely have substantial difficulty setting this up themselves. Most organizations will likely want to work closely with Neon to launch their system to its fullest potential.

Hi Tristan,

Thanks so much for your thoughtful feedback. We're honored to be your choice of CRM and glad to see you've been taking advantage of all the tools NeonCRM offers.

We agree that reporting can be complex because, even though it's a simple process, there are a lot of options. You are absolutely right to utilize our online Knowledge Base and Support Center, and our Client Success team has reached out to you directly to help make sure you're getting the most out of your reports!

Finally, we'd like to say that in addition to the support you mentioned, we offer the option for new NeonCRM users to work directly with our Professional Services team during the initial implementation of their system. It's a great way for new users to get off on the right foot with Neon!

Cheers!

Comments: It constantly surprises me with how well they have designed features. There is a lot we haven't explored yet. The Help and Support site is great, especially the video modules and the webinars. We don't pay for support as the few issues we have had they answer in a day or so with helpful answers. The one exception was an obscure bug I found in the 'new" workflow process. It was fixed in the next release.

Pros: I did an indepth analysis of non profit CRM systems and this came out on top. We could not afford anything expensive so the price was right. It has all the finctionality we need so far. It did not have "installment due" automated reminders but a few months ago they added workflows which are unbelievable powerful tools to not just send out reminders based on various triggers but you can perform multiple actions based on the trigger. The communications ( eblasts) is very well thought out. In fact we are about to stop using MailChimp & save their fees

Cons: So far we have not had great success in using it for event registration and processing. There are two many payment screens and we had s few credit cards declined. But to be fair, we did not dig into the reasons. We reverted back to Brown Paper Tickets but are looking at other products for our complicated multi-table registrations.

Excellent experience with NeonCRM...highly recommend it!

Comments: I work for a small, public charter school. The school had never tracked donors, incoming donations, or consistently sent thank yous. The only data that I had available to load into NeonCRM were from folders of thank you letters that had incomplete/incorrect contact information in some cases. I imported the current parents of our students this year as well as any data I could glean from the thank you letters for the previous 3 school years.

NeonCRM allowed us to more easily communicate with all of our constituents. The thank you letters are formatted to include tokens that make the letters more personal as well as contain photos and accomplishments of our student body. They are also are set up with different text and photos based on whether the donation is designated, in-kind, or unrestricted because that data is easily tracked in the software.

For the first time, KAPS participated in Giving Tuesday with an email campaign and also did an EOY appeal, neither of which had been attempted in the past. The EOY campaign brought in 30% of our donations for the year in the last two weeks of December. Several of the donors elected to become part of a new Friends of KAPS organization that is in its infancy. We were also able to send a donation summary for tax purposes this January, which had also never been done by the school. The reporting helps us target donors for specific appeals and know who has (and hasn't) given recently. We were able to get several people to sign up for recurring donations that increased our sustainability.

My current efforts are two-fold:

1) increase the use of the constituent portal, and

2) track volunteer hours using the Volunteer module so that we can report this data in grants that we are pursuing.

NeonCRM has been instrumental in taking our organization to the next level: helping us to maximize our constituents, increase our bottom line, and help us to become a professional charter school that is responsible with our constituents monetary donations. I would highly recommend NeonCRM to others looking for a constituent database.

(My only reason for giving a 4 on Ease of Use is that, being a small organization, I was not able to attend training. However, the videos and online manuals helped me determine how to use the software. The NeonCRM support staff were also very helpful if I couldn't find the answer to my question on my own.)

Comments: We use Neon for donor management and interface it to QuickBooks. There are several things that work very well and have made our operation more efficient. The primary efficiency item is that a webpage is developed for each campaign. We use this webpage on our organization website. This captures the donor and credit card information from the web page and sends it to both Neon and, in our case, Authorize.net. From there it syncs to QuickBooks and all is well. The problems can occur when we have manual transactions to enter, check and cash donations. Previously, it was simple to enter these to QuickBooks. Now that we are entering them to Neon and then syncing to QuickBooks, if there is an error in the entry to Neon and we do not catch it prior to the sync, we then have to fix both Neon and QuickBooks. One downside is that we only use Neon for donations. For us, it is not cost effective to use Neon for other transactions such as product sales. So, we have to remember that Neon is for donations and other transactions go directly to QuickBooks. This gets a bit complicated if one person pays for a donation and a product with a single check, cash or credit card transaction. There are a few fields that don't seem to sync from Neon to QuickBooks, so the info is in Neon but not QuickBooks. At least we haven't figure out how to get these fields to sync yet.

Pros: Operational efficiencies with the campaign web pages and the QuickBooks syncing.

Cons: Reporting - There are some canned reports and you can generate custom reports. However, the custom reporting features take some getting used to and sometimes are not able to do what you want. Dashboard - The dashboard could be more robust showing more information about donors and donations.

Recommendations to other buyers: Be prepared for training time. Neon has a lot of functionality and it is not all apparent on how to use it. There are lots of videos and help documents, but these do take time to go through. Be sure that someone is going to use the information.

Still a newbie but very happy so far

Pros: The sales staff was extremely knowledgeable, responsive, and helpful. Once we made the decision and started working with the support staff I found them equally accessible, knowledgeable, responsive and helpful. It is very easy to find helpful and instructive written materials and video training modules to solve most problems. The program is fairly intuitive and responsive.

Cons: Exporting our data from eTapestry and importing it into Neon was a disaster. If I'd had any idea how difficult it was, I'd have paid someone almost any price to do it for me. Most of the problem is the way gifts export from eTapestry, but Neon did not have the ability to adjust for that. It took four months to clean up the data and begin enjoying the functionality of Neon. I'm "Old School" and living in the formal Deep South, so I have to make some adjustments to keep communications formal as Neon is developed for the less formal use of the younger set. But it can be done.

Recommendations to other buyers: Compare products, their capabilities and ease of use. I found the people at Neon are its best product. Every person I have worked with has been easily accessible and responsive. The program is more intuitive and help is easier to find than other programs I worked with. And the price is better too.

Thank you for your constructive feedback, Jane! We¿re so pleased to have you on board and can¿t wait to see how NeonCRM furthers your mission to help people whose lives have been disrupted by serious mental illness. We have helped hundreds of clients successfully migrate their data into NeonCRM. We understand this is the toughest part of moving to a new system, but also the most important. A good CRM starts with good data. That¿s why all of our clients have access to free data export guides (https://z2.zendesk.com/entries/65688740-Data-Export-Tips). We also have a dedicated team that specializes in data analyses and imports. Clients can choose to have us do the entire import for them (custom import) or to have our specialists guide them through a self-import.

Thanks again for your comments and we are thrilled we were able to get you through the difficult time of getting your data out of your previous system. Onward and upward! We look forward to being a partner of Reed House and are thrilled to be aligned with an organization doing so much good for people who truly need help.

Comments: Since we adopted Neon this Spring, our organization's approach to data collection and historical information has completely revolutionized. Now, we do not have to reinvent the wheel every year. I am responsible the maintenance of the account and report creation and I could not be more pleased.

Pros: I love that Neon allows for a great deal of customization in the account fields. As an organization, we have lots of specific information that we are tracking and Neon allows for this to easily be drawn into reports. Customer service is incredibly responsive and helpful. Each new update is a pleasant surprise because I have found that they significantly increase the usability of the program. The relationship function allows us to track the connections that are so crucial to our development process. The event-building page was exactly what we needed and allowed us to build out a 500-person luncheon.

Cons: Neon does not allow us to draw reports focused on the relationships between our constituents which would be very useful. Neon does not have a great selection of newsletter or email templates. Additionally, we have found that emails from Neon consistently go to spam. I wish that it was possible to transfer information from custom surveys to account custom fields. Same with event information.

Excellent, well rounded CRM package.

Comments: Overall we would not hesitate to recommend the NeonCRM software package to any non-profit organization. Neon is available online from anywhere and is extremely reliable. Neon has partnered with other software solutions like QuickBooks, EventBrite and Survey Monkey. The package is reasonably priced and customer service is top-notch.

Pros: Full package offers all the options we need to organize and run our non-profit arts and education center. We need events for our performances and classes, donations are the core of our existence, the membership model is adaptable to our pass holders and we can track custom data about our patrons. The reporting feature is robust and works with Excel and Word. Neon integrates with our website and merchant account seamlessly.

Cons: It's hard to come up with many cons but the built in calendar needs upgrading to a more modern look. Some of the account fields are not available on all reports and past events need to be archived individually rather than in a bulk procedure.

Comments: In my experience so far, this is a very good product with a lot of functions, but there is a learning curve and many functionalities should really be easier and more intuitive. It would be easier and more attractive if there were some drag and drop features (for building forms, etc). There are a couple features that seem obvious that are missing - such as the ability to mark attendance at all sessions of an event. The integration with Quickbooks so far seems to be not as helpful as I had thought, because it doesn't look to me like it records in QuickBooks the type of payment or donation (just who made it and how much it was). Overall, though, it is a good software that has allowed us to start doing many things we weren't able to do before, and has the most features of all the products we compared.

Pros: Many features, social (peer-to-peer) fundraising

Cons: Not very user friendly for either us or our consituents. Long url's for listing registrations and forms on social media.

Recommendations to other buyers: Try it out as thoroughly as possible and make sure to watch videos and explore the help center.

Hi Heather,

We're happy to hear that Neon increased your capabilities and that you've had an enjoyable experience.

We did want to quickly clarify that NeonCRM is able to send detailed information about each transaction to QuickBooks, such as transaction type (Donation, Event Registration, Membership, Store Purchase) and many other transaction fields. These additional mapping options are not required, but they are available.

More info about our QuickBooks integration can be found in our Support Center, and you can always contact our support team online if you have any questions about system functionality.

Thanks again for your feedback. We are so excited that Dance Project of Washington Heights has joined the Neon community, and we look forward to continue providing tools to further your impact!

Pros: Easy to use. Amazing customer service that is quick to respond. They have a web portal you can submit a problem through and they respond or fix it immediately.

Does a great job managing members.

Cons: Data collected from forms is near impossible to work with and you can't share it with your team. It is not collected in an easy to view format, rather a spreadsheet that includes ALL account data for the person responding the the survey. Each time you want to look at the results you have to download a new report and reformat.

There is no way to limit an event to paid members. You must offer a "default" ticket that anyone can purchase.

Website user have to login each time they go to an area of your website that is for members only. Neon sells a custom plugin called Single Sign-On to correct this problem for an additional money. Without it, users get stuck in a cycle of logging in and not redirected to the page they were trying to access. Every time you log in you is taken to a member dashboard instead.

NeonCRM is overall easy to use and have been a huge help for growing the fundraising and programmatic missions of my small non-profit.

Comments: Overall good experience, and the staff has always been kind, helpful, and responsive.

Pros: I love the membership and event management systems, and how easy it is to integrate with MailChimp. The price point is great for my small nonprofit.

Cons: I do not like the forms, even when customized. The buttons, fields, and fonts seem outdated. Also, creating custom forms is difficult. You have to switch back and forth between the Forms & Pages Section and the System Setting section, and as a non-tech guy at my small and scrappy non profit, I constantly forget where everything is and how to change things. The system should be designed for the "lay" user, especially for a database that is accessible to small non profits, who most likely don't have the money to hire a full time tech or database manager, but divide responsibilities between the ED, fundraising, and program staff.

Pros: We've been using Neon for over a year and are generally happy with it. The biggest plus is that it handles multiple functions for us; we use it as our member/constituent database, our donation portal, our event registration software, and our social fundraising software. We used to use a homegrown Access database and had to manually input every payment that members made. With Neon, if members make a donation or payment online, it is automatically added to their record in the database. As a small organization with minimal office staff, we've found this helpful in saving time/work. We've found it very easy to print out mailing lists, email lists etc. for our mailings. (And we haven't even been using MailChimp, which is the third-party email program that integrates with Neon. We just download a list to Excel and then upload it to our email program, Vertical Response.) Being cloud-based is a plus; we can access our member records etc. when working from home, in the field etc.

Cons: As software that performs multiple functions, it probably doesn't have as many features as single-purpose software. (I.e. if you purchased software that JUST did social fundraising, it would probably have more bells and whistles than Neon's social fundraising module.) But then you end up spending more money and having systems that don't talk to each other.

Recommendations to other buyers: It would have been helpful to have in-person support when we were setting up Neon. The online tech support has been as responsive as possible via email, and the training webinars are useful, but there is no substitute for an expert sitting down with you and showing you the ropes in person. In retrospect, it would have been worth paying a consultant to come in for a day and make sure we were optimally set up and knew what we were doing.

Comments: I was new to using a CRM type data base like NEON when we were researching programs and systems a year ago, so I had a lot of concerns about jumping in. Thanks to excellent live customer support as we launched and loaded, as well as the online support via videos and online knowledge base, I've been able to learn a ton and make NEON do what I need it to do. I feel like I'm always learning more and that we're still just scratching the surface of what is possible with this very powerful system. I think it is affordable, and I appreciate the ability to only pay for the modules we're using - we received terrific guidance from our client manager during our purchase and set up, and once they had a sense of the work we do, she recommended against our purchasing an additional module. We can always add more later. We have learned a great deal about our data and have decades worth of records that need housekeeping attention on our end, but we're moving forward and using NEON on a daily basis to support our work.

Pros: Ease of use Clear, easy to use screens Consistency across options - once I learn one thing, it is applicable in many different scenarios Online knowledge base and training videos Potential!

Pros: I had never heard of this software previously, so was a bit unsure if it might meet our needs. I was very pleasantly surprised by the features of the product and that it was user friendly, but also received great customer service. After speaking with them they gave me a chance to use the product for free. They could even see that I didn't have much time to use it during the trial period so they reached out and offered the chance to extend it for me. Being a small nonprofit of all volunteers it was great to be able to have more time to really test it and see if it would work for us. And then being able to seamlessly move the data from the trial version to our actual version once we purchased was an added bonus.

Cons: Originally was concerned that the product comes in modules and that if we wanted more modules it would greatly increase the cost. It turned out that after looking at this pricing structure it was better for us because there are features that we would never use - so I feel like we are only paying for what we use. We haven't used all of the features yet so it is possible we could find something we don't like, but as for now, we're very happy. The importing we have done has been very easy.

Recommendations to other buyers: Ask for a free trial and use it for yourself to get an idea if you think it is a fit for you and your organization. Give a couple of others access as well and let them play with it. Nothing worse than being the only one that can understand how to use the software. I think cloud-based was important for us so that it could be accessed by a few us that are all in different places in the country.

Comments: Switching to Neon has been a good move for our organization. We are able to better organize our information in a more comprehensive way. After 1 year of use we are still figuring out how to use all the functions of neon to our advantage. Customer service is quick to respond and pretty amazing.

Pros: It is very user friendly and it is accessible anywhere.

Cons: The formatting platform for system letters, system emails, and online forms is ridiculously bad. It looks like it might work like Word but it does not. It is so limited in its ability that I find we had to revamp everything we've always done with communication flow. This is very frustrating. There are so many good platforms out there - I wish neon would improve this feature. It would make life much easier with neon.

Recommendations to other buyers: When you complete the conversion, make sure you buy the comprehensive training package. We did not have live customer service when we went live with Neon and it forced us to fumble our way through those beginning months. I don't even think we knew that we wouldn't have someone to call when we had a problem. That said - the online support is amazing.

Comments: The reason that I gave 4 starts for ease of use is for the implementation process. Other software would get the same number of stars because the implementation of anything like this is always very complex and takes a certain kind of person to complete. The system administrator needs to be very comfortable with computers and feel comfortable with teaching themselves how to use it and figure out any issues or solutions. The configurations, customization and importing of previous data can be difficult for someone that isn't comfortable with new software, or someone who doesn't take time to read all the instructions. The Neon CRM is working perfectly for us. One of the free webinars on QuickBooks actually helped us figure out how to more efficiently and effectively use QuickBooks. Our members love being able to log into the system and update their profiles and see their membership history.

Pros: Online database is secure; database and the application are organized in ways that make sense for how non-profits operate (fundraising, donations, membership); flexibility in features; customization available; statistics and reports that are available; customer service is knowledgeable and responsive; automation of many processes that were previously done manually in spreadsheets and word documents.

Cons: The ONLY thing that I wish Neon offered is a feature for the app. We have monthly events, and I would love to have our members sign themselves in on two different iPads using the app, and have it automatically synced with each other online. To be fair, this is a feature that very few companies offer, since the automatic syncing is difficult to develop.

Pros: It gives a small non-profit an affordable option for keeping track of donations and donors.

Cons: Customer service isn't very good and since the system has a lot of functionality, it can be hard to navigate.

Overall: The system has lots of functionality (tracking donations from multiple events, creating automatic thank you letters, end of year letters) and there are additional add-ons for more (crowd funding, integration into Quickbooks, etc). The ability to scale makes it more affordable than other bundled similar products that we looked into.

The biggest drawback is customer service. There is a large database of questions/answers, but without added expense, you are largely left to your own to figure out the system and set things up correctly. It's a good system for the value, but due to the lack of ease, I feel that we haven't utilized the system to it's fullest ability.

Pros: While researching a new CRM for our organization, we liked that NeonCRM included features like Quickbooks integration, MailChimp integration, custom forms etc.

Cons: They really don't do well to inform you how little is available at the entry price. Every integration they showcase and even the ability to create custom forms comes with an additional monthly fee which also increases when your contacts increase beyond your current pricing tier. Our biggest issue is that PayPal discounts are not recorded, so when you push your donation transactions over to Quickbooks, you have to manually edit all of those sales receipts to include the discount from PayPal. Also, any recurring monthly donors in PayPal will have to give their credit card information again in the new Neon process which could run the risk of losing donors. Overall it has not delivered up to our expectations and for a smaller organization, it would be very costly to have all the features. Customer service comes at a fee and that is not even available until after you purchase the setup call and until you've been a customer for at least six months. Meanwhile, the online support largely results in waiting for hours and then them referring you to a guide you've likely already read. Massively frustrated with this system and it has taken us forever to get it up and running, which has proven to be a waste of time anyway because it can't do what we'd like it to, or at least not without an additional fee.

Comments: After 2 nightmarish contracts with two separate inward-/outward-facing database platforms, this was a breath of fresh air. It works right off the rip, the training videos are actually helpful, if you can get through them, and there was no pressure from sales; no contract. They know what they're good at and integrate other systems for things that have better, more specialized products like, Eventbrite, Quickbooks and Mailchimp, and consolidates the data. The whole team can actually use it rather than feeling like data-entry drones.

Pros: The integrations with Eventbrite and Mailchimp allow us to use the best of everything without having to manage lists in every direction or hiring an IT guru. We talked through our existing (and very messy) data with a data rep from the platform. She talked us through how we needed to clean and modify it for this particular system, including recommendations based her knowledge of the different form fields and feature, and then we uploaded it based on the mapping she set up, and were able to easily modify once we had everything ready to go live

Cons: It's not as flashy or designed as well as some others, but it works! The only other issue would be if we wanted to connect organization accounts and contact accounts in the upload. We could have asked for a custom import, or manually connected the accounts, but since the system search includes scanning the org field, we can search for one org and all the contacts who have it listed as their company pop up anyway, which is all we need!

Meh, it's alright.

Pros: I like that it is a (relatively) cost effective CRM that is all web-based.

Cons: Working with tech support is a horrible user experience. The folks who make this software should read about Computer Mediated Communication and gain understanding about why CMC is ineffective. I have never had a positive experience with tech support, and typically receive a snarky e-mail response 24 hours after submitting a ticket which guides me to the online Q & A section...which is where I look every time before contacting customer service because it is a horrible user experience. I feel like I am not a priority to them at all.

Recommendations to other buyers: There is probably something better; if you find it...call me.

Ryan, we are terribly sorry you have not had a pleasant experience with our support thus far. We care very deeply about each and every one of our nonprofit partners and take any negative feedback very personally...and seriously.

We here at NeonCRM pride ourselves on providing excellent customer service and have maintained a stellar 90-95% satisfaction rating with all of our nonprofit partners (along w/ many 5-star review ratings for our support above and below this post).

As always, you can feel free to contact your account manager any time directly via phone or email to discuss our other support options or for further assistance. We truly hope that together we can help the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hutchinson the way we help so many other Boys & Girls clubs, and our many other fantastic nonprofit partners.

Pros: They were very helpful on the phone explaining what their software offers and helping me transfer my data. I like that the product is all encompassing for the donor. I like that this product can track donations, track events, and serve as our email newsletter provider also. I also think it is nice that the donor can create their own personal login and manage donations.

Cons: The product does not seem to have all the features I had with previous software. The main item I have not been able to do is to put a listing of all donations from a donor in a letter.

Recommendations to other buyers: Use the trial period to try things out and participate in one or more of the online training sessions.

Thanks so much for your wonderful response, Theresa! We here at NeonCRM are extremely excited to be a part of One Heart Family Ministries mission in helping children who are struggling in the foster care system. What an amazing mission!

Itemized Donation Token: As the deepest web-based CRM built specifically for nonprofits on the market, we are thrilled that OHFM can take advantage of so much integrated functionality that NeonCRM offers. Per your comment about placing an itemized list of all donations a donor has made into a letter (or email), we actually DO have that feature available and there is a guide on this in the NeonCRM Support Center. We'll have someone reach out directly to provide the necessary guides.

Future Feature Suggestions: For any other features you are searching for and cannot find, please submit a ticket to our Support Team and they will be in touch with any corresponding guides and instructions. If, for some reason, there is a feature NeonCRM does not have and you would like to suggest it as an option for our Development Team to consider, we have a community forum where our clients submit "feature suggestions". We monitor this area frequently; and with new features being added to NeonCRM every month, we rank and prioritize what new features to add.

We truly look forward to streamlining OHFM's day-to-day processes so staff can spend more time helping out the children that need your help most!

Pros: The layout is extremely clear and easy to use. I didn't always have time to do the training videos but was able to figure out how to achieve my reports or email campaigns by simply following each screen and through a little trial and error. It's very user-friendly, and you can get to what you need in a few screen selections.

Cons: We can't edit existing accounts via upload without the NeonCRM ID. It would help if they system could give us an option to match records with last names and let us select. Also, when producing reports, it would be great if you could select more than one individual type.

Recommendations to other buyers: Make sure you evaluate it after you've had time to play with it first.

Daphne, thanks so much for your amazing review! We're so happy to have Gala Hispanic Theatre as a NeonCRM partner-client. We just wanted to let you know that you can absolutely choose more than one "Individual Type" on reports. Simply choose either "In Range of" or the "Advanced" selector from the query drop down option and you will be able to add multiple selectors to the query (e.g., equal, not equal, etc.). Please feel free to reach out to the support team if you have further questions about using this option.

As for batch updating accounts without a NeonCRM ID, it can be a slippery and unpredictable slope that can lead to updating the wrong accounts. While it seems logical at first glance, depending on something like 'last name' (or even another combination of simple rules to reconcile updating account data) to distinguish one account from another can utterly ruin the integrity of your data. There is just no better way to do this than with a unique ID. It is the only thing that can insure your batch updates do not accidentally update that other "John Smith" by accident. People even use different email addresses, nicknames, addresses and more from time to time, so please trust in our genius developers who are obsessively compulsive about your data staying clean.

Thanks again for your awesome review and we are honored to be a partner in everything Gala Hispanic Theatre does at the beautiful Tivoli Theatre.

Pros: We use Neon for everything! Forms, donations, events, emails, etc. It's not absolutely perfect for any one thing, but it's really great at all those things. For the value and the comprehensiveness, I'd recommend it highly! Plus, the customer service and help center are incredible!! So many resources and extremely quick replies. Very easy to work with.

Cons: Even if there isn't a capability for something I want to do one day, I love that Neon is constantly updating with new features. I know that I can request it and (with enough other people wanting the same thing), they'll be responsive and development solutions. So any cons aren't cons for long.

Pros: What usually took ten steps now takes one or two. The visual aesthetics of the whole program are more friendly, and the automated stock reports are so useful. Overall the system offers more efficiency and takes a lot of stress out of the day.

Cons: We had some issues with importing our data from the previous CRM. Some of our data could not be imported the same way so we have some manual entry. This is a temporary dislike. As we move forward, these will not be an issue. We also expected more expert understanding of the system we were moving from, from Neon. Neon only knew the basics of our old system. We quickly realized we needed an expert to help us pull the data correctly to transfer data accurately. Since we did not have a data expert on staff we did a lot of extra work to get the data right, ultimately increasing our staff time and original estimate of the data transfer from Neon. I might recommend having your current CRM provider help you pull the data for export to Neon. It was something we felt uncomfortable doing since we were terminating our contract. The overall dislike lies more in our expectations. We have had a good experience so far, just be prepared be the expert on your data in your current system, not Neon.

Recommendations to other buyers: Evaluate how memberships, donations and events work in your organization and how it will be applied to this system. We had to change a lot of our process for the better, but it is still a lot of work. It is important to understand how Neon will change how you are structuring your "gifts" for each type: event, membership and donation. Exporting the data is the most crucial part in the success of a transition like this.

Pros: It makes searching and pulling reports somewhat simple so that I, a somewhat technologically inept individual, and my board members can pull reports when our Development Coordinator in unavailable. The dashboards are simple and clear. It makes looking at an individuals history easy and help to show relevancy between recents attendance and donations. And they provide VERY HELPFUL webinars!

Cons: It is very time consuming and tedious to watch all the training videos and very expensive to get training. For an organization as small as ours with our low budget that can make it difficult to use NeonCRM to it's fullest potential

Pros: - Customer Service and Tech Support are helpful, responsive, friendly, and have addressed my concerns as well as pointed me to resources and set up extra training to make sure I get the answers I am seeking! - I love the reports functionality! You can customize your own to get whatever info you need, or you can run some of the common ones the system has pre-formatted for you. Super easy and helpful. - Managing and avoiding duplicates is really well addressed in this system. Since switching to Neon, I've been able to quickly address our pre-existing duplicates and to greatly reduce the number of new duplicates being created.

Cons: - The interface can be clunky in certain places (especially editing forms/system letters), and sometimes this leads to a lot of tedious work to make something look the way I need it to. That said, Neon says they're currently working on a fix for this particular issue.

Comments: Cultural Council of Indian River County is a very small (2 employee) non-profit with a limited budget. After thorough research, balancing our CRM needs with product cost, we chose Neon. The program is vastly superior to juggling Excel spreadsheets and Word documents. Our everyday management of memberships, donations, fundraising campaigns, and event tickets/reservations has been incredibly facilitated. This robust program is well worth the learning curve!

Pros: Ability to save and reuse report set-ups. Processing of memberships and donations is a breeze with pre-loaded mail merge thank you letters and emails. A generous quantity of data fields built in, plus the ability to add custom fields. Training videos, support website, and the Neon Technical Support Team are top-notch. I was able to initially input all my data using the tutorials and the data moved seamlessly.

Cons: Learning the program is moderately difficult, and to me, does not always seem intuitive. I find the system letter editor a challenge. Not all data fields are available to all report types, so report type must be chosen carefully.

Recommendations to other buyers: I've been using Neon several hours a day for about one year, and still learning, discovering, and exploring the program. Overall, I am extremely pleased, and definitely, the dreary and tedious "admin" tasks have been streamlined, allowing me to devote more time to spend on the aspects of my position I most enjoy. I highly recommend you consider NeonCRM.

Pros: Lots of features available. Customer service is pretty good. I love their guides, help center and the training and webinars that they provide.

Comments: Working in NeonCRM and working with the NeonCRM team has been absolutely wonderful. While no database or CRM is perfect, Neon checks off more "must have" and "would love to have" boxes than other databases I've worked with, or the database our organization used prior to Neon. Having a small (1.5 person) fundraising shop, it was imperative that we found a database that was intuitive and had features that were easy to use and easy to understand -- Neon hit the nail on the head. Having only 1.5 FTEs dedicated to fundraising has made implementation of all of the different features take a bit longer, but every time we put a new piece in place (i.e. the event module or the online store) it makes our lives easier and helps us be more efficient and effective with our time. Now, instead of using one platform for fundraising, another separate software for events, and a third for our store, everything is neatly packaged into one amazing database.

Pros: - Easy to use and understand - Amazing support staff - Regular updates to improve the product - Easy to set up with the help of Neon staff - Affordable - Custom reporting features are intuitive

Cons: - The fundraising dashboard isn't as customizable as I would like (i.e. you can feature campaigns, but you can't compare campaigns year over year on the dash) - I wish there was a way to manipulate some of the stock reports to get a better output for what we need

Recommendations to other buyers: Take full advantage of their free 30-day trial and use real data to discover all of the features.

Pros: NeonCRM is an all-encompassing subscription based program that handles every and anything you would desire. With a real connection to non-profit needs, they have thought of everything! From account records, staff notes, mailing lists and events to a huge knowledge base for support with guides and videos, there is literally nothing you can't do. . . Sound unrealistic? If there is something you think of that you are unable to do, email the support center and they will make it happen!! Have an issue with the program and can't figure it out, create an incident and get a lightening fast response! That is the best thing by far about this company and program is the customer service. Each and every representative has gone out of their way to make sure my experience with researching, selecting and implementing our donor management program was as painless and easy as possible. Thanks!

Cons: The only thing I don't like about NeonCRM and this is a good thing really, is the reporting system. There are so many base reports for different reporting that it is hard to learn how to produce results you expect from your search criteria. There are guides and videos to address this, it is just hard to find time to learn all that is needed to run a dependable report.

Recommendations to other buyers: Compare apples to apples. Be sure to ask questions like, what gateway service will I need and how much will it cost? Do you charge a separate fee for each transaction? Do you provide customer service to more than one person? Are there additional charges for more than one log-in and how many can log in simultaneously? Is there a contract and how long? I compared 5 different and top in the industry companies and found Neon to be the most flexible and affordable system out there.

Comments: I haven't messed with the membership management side of the software yet, so I can't speak to that and definitely will be exploring that for future clients.

Pros: NeonCRM has great people working there. I have found them to be universally helpful and friendly. Neon integrates with QuickBooks Online - well - and is priced at a point most smaller organizations can probably afford. Plus, they recently launched NeonOne, which doesn't carry a monthly subscription cost. Instead you just pay per donation. The fee is a little steeper than things like PayPal, but to really small organizations, I feel like this is a much needed service (since it's not just a way to get paid, it's a way to organize everyone giving you money). During my product walk through, the rep I spoke with had an answer for every question I had both about tracking donors and about the accounting integration side. He was obviously passionate about the product and super knowledgeable about both fundraising and accounting, so he understood what people needed out of a CRM. I was really impressed.

Cons: This software is seriously good. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to just about anybody who works in the nonprofit world, if you can handle the per month fee.

Close to everything I want, but not quite there.

Pros: NeonCRM bundles together database management, email communications, event registration, and membership payments. It is more convenient than using separate services for each feature. The Neon team updates frequently and introduces new features and integrations. They have an extensive user submitted FAQ database.

Cons: Neon's marketing schtick is that their product is designed by nonprofit professionals. Using NeonCRM, I quickly realized I want a product designed by software engineers. There are small annoyances like not being able to use the 'enter' key to submit search queries and larger issues like not being able to use custom membership forms for individual or household memberships (only business memberships). Their customer service is limited to two email addresses per license.

Overall: It is convenient having an all in one nonprofit CRM rather than using multiple services (like Excel, DonorPerfect, MailChimp, etc.)

Pros: the online forms creation is unmatched. The depth of the product is excellent and the reporting can give you what you need to get the data from the system.

Cons: The volunteer module. You can't delete applications and projects. It is the weakest part of the system.

Overall: As both a user and as a consultant, I always recommend neon for any client who needs a self-service solution. I have not seen anything in the market that compares to the ability to create an online form for registrations, donations, memberships, constituent access and use.

In addition, the modules are all there for running a nonprofit - from the store, to events, to volunteers, there is a module and the cost for all of them is not significant.

Recommendations to other buyers: Don't put the burden of the implementation on the provider. Put a plan together for implementation and make sure before you buy that you go over that plan.

Comments: I personally reviewed and read reviews of many many CRM's to find what would work for our non-profit, for donor relationship management, events and volunteer management. It was an exhausting search and was narrowed down to three companies. Those three companies did a live demo for our Executive, Administrative and Donor Relations Directors. Even though Neon was up against stiff competition Neon CRM was the unanimous choice by everyone. The cost of setup, monthly cost, the ease of import, the upfront help to get you going and all the training material online and live sessions each month made the process so much less stressful. Since implementation I have asked questions of the support team several times and they are so very helpful, quick to respond and quick to resolve your issue or let you know if it was going to be delayed. We have saved several thousand dollars a year switching to Neon which allows us to put those funds toward our programs. The canned reports are wonderful and allow you to configure them if they are not just the way you want. The monthly updates to make the system and reports better is another reason to choose Neon, they seem to be on top of making the CRM better and better each month. We are new to doing paid events and the set up, and online registration forms were easy to set up and start using. A huge plus for me as the bookkeeper is the online donations and all the demographics are automatically posted to Neon which helps streamline my process. The bottom line is the user friendliness, ease of setup and cost lead us to Neon and we have not regretted the decision. From the software we were using that was so user unfriendly Neon has been such a wonderful change because I can come up with the data that is needed to build our relationships with our donors and that keeps everyone happy.

Comments: Scott was extremely helpful through our trial. He even extended our trial an additional 30 days to allow our entire team to get comfortable with NEON.

Pros: It seems like NEON can do everything- event registration, volunteer management, donor tracking. The systems settings home page has everything you need to customize the front facing forms and back end for system users.

Cons: The systems settings page has everything you need... but it is also a little overwhelming at first. After watching all the intro videos I have a better grasp on how to use all the features. I tend to get lost in the systems page because it takes so many clicks to get to the page I was searching for.

Comments: The adaptability of the program is somewhat cumbersome to learn, but the modules are easy to use once they are taught adequately by either the Neon service center or through another employee. I've discovered that asking for less information ultimately results in receiving more in return for reports. We are underutilizing the system for events and volunteer registration. I am curious how those would work.

Pros: The ease of merging reports to documents is very simple.

Cons: Learning the system took a long learning curve. Too many options are needless but still available, thus reducing how nimble the program is. Neon also limits the ability to edit online forms for your website.

Recommendations to other buyers: I suggest maintaining constant contact with their support system to guide you, especially through the first three or four months of using the system.

Pros: It's cloud-based and accessible from anywhere. It also contains a lot of bells and whistles, like event management, social fundraising, and such.

Cons: The UI is acceptable for people with some degree of comfort with computers, and it's certainly more intuitive than, say, Sales Force. For the less tech-friendly, though, it can be complicated. I'm frustrated by the inability to customize the front page, for example, so that all users see specific charts or graphs (re: fundraising, events, etc.). I'm also frustrated that some of its modules are so lackluster--the email module being the most notable. And the lack of API support for popular services like Constant Contact is maddening.

Comments: Almost 4 years ago, when I considered which contact/donor relations management software platforms I was going to use for the ministry, here are a few of the things I was looking for: 1. Expandability (Will the system grow with us as we need it to without paying for what we don't need?) 2. e-Commerce - Are the e-commerce functions user friendly? Are they secure? Does it have integrated merchant service capabilities and can it seamlessly integrate with the database/account management capabilities? 3. Can I easily segregate, query, and manage contacts/donors? Can I track all of our touches with our contacts/donors and view them in one place/interface? 4. Do the front-end functionality components make it easy for our contacts/supporters/donors/etc. to communicate and do business with us? 5. Can we easily integrate our CRM communication/outreach/events/etc. into our existing website, social media, and vice versa? I was pumped when I got a "Yes" answer to all of the questions above from the team at Z2 Systems about the NeonCRM.

I have extensive experience with some of the larger CRM providers and their products. I can say that without a doubt, the NeonCRM system is as functional, robust, expandable, and overall as capable, right out of the box, as systems costing 10 to 20 times as much. Clients are not hit with additional charges for modules that should already be included in the overall package. With regards to customer service and the company's employees and management actually listening to the customer and making adjustments to the system in order to meet the needs of the customer, Z2 Systems blows everyone else away. Coupled with its available seamless and cost-effective merchant services account integration partners, NeonCRM is a great option for any size organization and budget.

Comments: We're a small environmental nonprofit with limited staff (4 FTE) and limited budget. We started using Neon about three years ago and it has proved a very capable, affordable solution. We use it to manage our membership files, mailing lists, credit card donations, event registration and our Birdathon (social fundraising like a walkathon). It was a HUGE improvement over our clunky old Access membership database. It also allows us to do all these things with one program, rather than separate programs for fundraising, event registration etc.

I also like that it is a cloud-based program, so if I am away from the office but need to look up a donor's email address or print out the attendance list for an event, I can do it from anywhere.

Of course there are downsides and occasional things that are a little clunky. Because it does so many things, there are instances where it won't manage a function as well as a program that is dedicated to that sole function. For instance, we would probably have more features in a social fundraising program that was ONLY social fundraising. BUT we don't have the budget or staff to manage multiple software programs and vendors ¿ plus multiple programs wouldn't be integrated like Neon is.

Our level of customer support from Neon allows us to submit help requests via email and get an email response. This took a little getting used to (there were times at the start where I just wanted to call up and get an immediate answer on the phone!). But the responses are usually very quick -- within an hour or two -- and on target. Once I got used to it, the email support system has worked fine for us.

I would definitely recommend Neon for other small or midsize nonprofits.

Comments: They are quick to answer questions & really listen to comments. It's so easy to get informative reports & has helped us to make better connections with members & grow our donor base!

Pros: Consolidates all our contacts in one plave, irs super easy to create categories, and the automated correspondence is "da bomb"! Great tutorials & the customer service is amazing; I don't feel like a number. Even though we've had Neon for over a year, we're still being treated like kings.

Cons: Can be a bit if a learning curve to make use of all the options... good news is the tutorials are fantastic. Kinda wish the integration with MailChimp was a bit more intuitive.

Pros: A good price for the software. There are many features and compared to other software, you definitely get a lot for your money.

Cons: Limited in features, for example, the store discounts you can only use what is offered, there are not many other options. I also don't feel like there is room to customize it in any area. Lastly, it would be nice to have access to customer service without having to submit requests and/or pay additional fees.

Pros: From the very beginning, I've found the program easy to navigate. The screen is set up in a simple and not-overwhelming structure. We have users on all end of the spectrum of technical experience, so that was very important to me when selecting a program. It is very easy to search for a constituent, and we love being able to see all the activity with that person on one screen. Details are always just a click away. The vendor has been very professional to work with, regardless of the situation.

Cons: Our greatest challenge has been with the Social Fundraising feature. The basic nuts and bolts of this module work. However, there are still some features that are lacking for our needs. We hold one major fundraiser a year, and the success of that event is primarily driven by social fundraising. This program is missing several features that we used in a previous one that I am still a bit surprised haven't been added. It would be fine for smaller fundraising events. We typically have around 100 fundraisers, so it is more challenging to manage without these features.

Recommendations to other buyers: Take time to prioritize your needs, and I definitely encourage you to do a trial of it to make sure it will meet them. I would encourage you to consider all users, their technical abilities, and what information will help them fulfill their roles better in your organization. Consider both short term and long term needs.

Pros: For a non-profit with only one employee, many of our records were kept in dozens of spreadsheets. When it came to grant writing or reporting, we had to research and dive into many different documents taking a significant of time that could have been dedicated to furthering our mission. This NeonCRM will allow us to consolidate ALL of our record-keeping while increasing accountability and productivity not only of our staff but also of our board members. We are so excited that something like this exists that has been designed by people that KNOW what non-profit record keeping looks like! Also, they provide so many videos and tutorials that make it so easy to dive right in! Thank you NeonCRM!

Cons: At this time, I haven't been using the product long enough to see a negative...

Recommendations to other buyers: Take an opportunity to watch some of the videos that take you through all of the basic features of the software. Just in that 40 minute video, I answered MANY of my questions and found out several features that I didn't previously know. NeonCRM also offers free training twice a week so those are a great way to get a better look or to ask questions during the evaluation process. Definitely consider not only how much this will help with your donor database and donor cultivation, but how much time it will save your staff allowing them to dedicate more of their time to furthering your mission rather than "pushing paper."

Pros: Lots of functionality, great for the long run because we can continue to expand. We haven't even scratched the surface of its capabilities yet.

Cons: Certain features are hard to figure out, particularly the integration with other software. Visually it is hard to scroll through all the attributes of a record. Perhaps another way to organize it on screen would be more user friendly. A little more support with tutorials or with a rep would be helpful to implement some of the features that I am interested in.

Pros: I love the convenience of it. We now use Neon for all of our event registrations, and it has been a lifesaver! Trying to deal with paper registration was inconvenient for us and all of our participants. By switching to Neon, we were able to provide online registration, which meant that we didn't have to track down all of the applications, and our participants could register at home instead of at the rush of our events. Since we are only a four-man team, Neon has really blessed us and our beloved participants!

Cons: My only tip for improvement would be to make the setup process easier. Now it is slightly complicated and needs some getting used to; however, the confusion is a small price to pay in comparison to the overall benefits.

Recommendations to other buyers: The convenience alone is a big winner for me; however, as you evaluate this kind of software, keep in mind how it will effect the overall quality of your program/organization. Based on your organization's specific target groups and needs, ask yourself if implementing a program like Neon will move your organization forward or add unnecessary challenges; this program (and other like it) takes time to understand and set up, so if that is something you don't have, then it most likely won't be beneficial to you. However, if you do have the necessary resources, then (in my opinion) it will most definitely alleviate your workload and give your customers/participants the convenience they need.

Pros: The database is pretty easy to customize and is something that we can do on our own generally without having to consult a professional. The cost is also very reasonable. NeonCRM has helped us tremendously in streamlining our work with our volunteers and donors!

Pros: Neon CRM is easier to navigate and search than many other donor management softwares that I have used. I also like the customizing features in the reports. Donation entries are also simple and make it easy for me to work with volunteers for data entry.

Cons: I do wish support was a little easier to access. Additionally, although many reports are customizable, there are some limitations when it comes to using households that can be challenging when trying to run good clean mailing lists. However, every database has its quirks.

Pros: The support team is amazing- fast responses and provides helpful information immediately. Easy to send mass communications and fix mistakes made by users.

Comments: Overall great experience, I would recommend to another company if they were confident in problem solving.

Pros: I really like the ease of entering new donor's and sending tax receipts. I also really like the reports option and how easy it is to change the report and export it to excel. I also like the mail merge option, this is a huge time saver.

Cons: It is not user friendly to create new campaigns and new tax receipt letters. It takes me a long time to find where the emails and letters are stored then find the version I have to copy and work off then set up as the newer version and make sure it is connected to the campaign. It's a lot of steps that are not very user friendly and takes longer than necessary to find all the right steps.

Comments: I worked with one of the customer rep and he was a pleasure to work with. Our purchase timeline was painfully slow (on our end) and he never lost patience or was pushy. He listened to what we needed and didn't try to sell us more than that.

Pros: The integrative system allows for streamlining data from 6 sources into 1. When updating the info, it allows for less mistakes since the data only needs to be corrected in one place. The data options are endless. The data is presented cleanly and entering is fairly intuitive. I think this system is easier to use than the one we replaced (and used for 4 years so I was familiar with it). The packages are easy to compare and have useful additions (for some people), but are not required.

Cons: We didn't switch over soon enough. The thought of no phone and chat support is intimidating when first switching systems. After a month or so, I wouldn't think about it.

Pros: It's great to have our NeonCRM forms (membership, donations, etc.) match our website format. The online knowledge base is a great resource. We don't need to contact customer support that often because it typically answers most of our questions. They system helps to have all of our database needs in one place.

Cons: The email communications system could be slightly easier to use and have better design features, but for the most part it works fine. We have also opted not to use the store feature.

Thanks so much for your kind words, Maria! We are thrilled to partner with NFM in being part of promoting effective teaching, learning, and research in higher education -- and more!

We did want to quickly acknowledge and clarify the ability to self-import to custom fields. First off, if you ever have any questions about features or functionality you can always submit a support request or call your account manager directly. Our wonderful team would be glad to assist.

As for the importing of custom fields specifically, it is possible to self-import to account level custom fields, as well as donation and membership custom fields. In order to do so, you'll be required to create them in NeonCRM first. But you are also correct that there are some types of custom fields that are not self-importable -- like individual and organization custom fields.

You may already know, but here is the guide that speaks to this in more detail:

https://z2.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/218529887-Importing-Data-in-NeonCRM#custom

Again, welcome aboard and we look forward to playing a part in improving the quality of higher education.

Thanks for your glowing review, April. We are thrilled to be part of the Thomas Davis Defending Dreams Foundation team in helping to encourage the students of today to become the leaders of tomorrow!

And, unlike the publicly traded company you mentioned above, we here at Z2 Systems, Inc. are privately held and beholden to no one but our incredible clients. We do not answer to shareholders and choose to educate, empower, and defend nonprofits of all sizes without worry of stock performance. We are indeed a bit of an underdog, but have been in this game for over a decade now and have developed the most robust cloudbased CRM built specifically for nonprofits!

Lastly, if a team of NeonCRM consultants is what TDDFF is looking for, we do in fact offer onsite training at a very reasonable cost which is featured on our website. But, we have chosen to let our clients opt-in for those services if budget allows and have developed an intuitive software platform that does not warrant spending thousands of dollars to fly a team in to show you how to use NeonCRM.

We look forward to being a supportive teammate of the Thomas Davis Defending Dreams Foundation for years to come and working together to help the youth of today lead tomorrow.

Cons: Takes a while to learn how it works to take fully advantage of all of the features. Membership Directory needs a facelift. Selecting addresses for printing labels is tricky.

Comments: As a smaller nonprofit, it has been manageable to deal with our data, but I think if we had a bigger database, implementation would've been hard to manage

Pros: -We purchased a website from Neon as well as the CRM, so we like that everything is integrated and that our forms are branded with the website -Easy data entry -Relatively easy import manager -Manage duplicates easily -Reporting is relatively strong

Cons: - I wish the implementation team worked more with me on best practices on using the system (how to properly track prospects, how to deal with event RSVPs) -I didn't find the Webinar series that comes with implementation very helpful - I thought it brought up more questions -Not having the Live Chat feature makes work sometimes slow because I have to wait for my ticket to be responded to -Dealing with email audiences can be difficult given the searches, can end up in a lot of data entry and when you export the email audience you can't get all the info from the constituent which makes it hard to sort

Hi Mandy,

Thanks so much for your thoughtful feedback. We're happy to know you've been taking advantage of so many of the tools Neon offers!

To address your concerns specifically, we completely understand that getting the right report results can be a trial-and-error process, which is why we try to offer a wide range of resources that deal with reporting. There's a wonderful article in our support center titled, appropriately, "Getting the Right Report Results" at https://support.neoncrm.com/hc/en-us/articles/218529077-Getting-the-Right-Report-Results.

I would also encourage you to submit a support ticket or schedule some time with your Professional Services Consultant for an in-depth, one-on-one discussion of your reporting needs. Should you need access to a report that isn't available within Neon already, we can always pull a custom report for you at your request!

Finally, while Neon does provide email confirmation for all event registrants and attendees, you can also utilize our integration partnership services for more robust ticketing and check-in functionality. We integrate with both Eventbrite and MyRollCall--if you'd like more information on how these services integrate with Neon, please send us an email at clientsuccess@neoncrm.com. Thanks again!

Comments: We are a small, local not-for-profit organization whose mission statement is ¿Leadership through community service.¿ The organization has been in existence since 1987. We work with a select group of youth (grades 5-12) who are chosen by their schools to participate in a leadership academy. Our primary supporters are the families of the youth and community members. Before using NEON, we kept our records in a variety of Excel spreadsheets. Looking to expand our database and be more efficient in our fundraising and events, we trained to use NEON in February 2012 and went live shortly thereafter. Our trainer was very thorough and informative. I appreciated receiving a video copy of our training for future reference. The implementation of the system was seamless and the support staff was very responsive when I asked them to make some changes (e.g. - change the logo on the front end page). We have used NEON primarily for events and campaigns. Each time I set up an event/campaign, I learn more about what NEON can do. Whenever I have encountered a problem or question, I have found that my support questions are answered quickly and in a helpful manner. NEON has made record keeping and event recording much easier for me, as I rely on NEON¿s various reports to get information on registrants, various donations, etc. Another advantage of NEON is that I do not have to handle as much money directly. In the future, I would like to set up a store in NEON and use our email database we are building in NEON for newsletters, etc.

Pros: I've looked into several different donor relations databases, and Neon was hands down the best we've seen. The customer service was definitely above and beyond, and truly set them apart from their competition! The database is very user-friendly and customizable. I can't wait to full start using it!

Cons: I don't particularly care for the fact that you have to pay an additional cost for the extra training. I feel like this should be included. If companies don't have time to watch all of the youtube videos, or aren't great at being self-taught, then they will not be able to get the most out of the system, and will be more likely to cancel the services. If the customer doesn't understand the database and how to use it, then it will ultimately be a waste of money for the client (which means NEON will lose their business). Small non-profits like mine, who are looking to increase fundraising and donations, just can't afford that extra cost.

Comments: The support staff are always very helpful.

Pros: The ability to upload our own templates and our own CSS to forms and surveys gives us a lot of control over look and feel.

Cons: The linkage between signing up for an event and registering as a social fundraiser for the event is still pretty clunky.

Comments: This service is priced so low that it is doable by us (200 member organization) and this is even more true when combined with World Pay.

Pros: Neon provides excellent member data in a detailed and usable format. We have benefited often from easy data retrieval. Also, initial learning was extremely helpful.

Cons: The report writing takes a bit of a learning curve with respect to defining parameters. Also, we have found that editing system emails is a little awkward.

Pros: I appreciate the flexibility to choose your own payment processor and flexibility of other add-ons that allow you to stick with what you know works, and change what you know does not. I also appreciate the integration with quickbooks, email lists, and event ticketing. Those three things alone will save us around 200 hours annually as an organization. Vendor is really straightforward and transparent.

Cons: We are still implementing and creating our database so I do not have anything to comment regarding flaws at this point. If I had to say one thing it would be that we have a scheduled 8-10 days of downtime in the database for the final import. Although this was comparable to every other product I reviewed and really shouldn't be a big issue for us.

Recommendations to other buyers: Talk with a friend or colleague that uses it, even better if you can chat with someone who has used multiple software products and made a switch. You can read reviews all day and talk to sales departments but if you really want a clear-cut answer or review I think the best way to find out is by asking someone you already trust and know. I was able to play around in the program too as it was set up for one organization which helped me get an idea of what day-to-day use would be like.

Pros: The software is extremely user-friendly and has a super clean interface. When you log in, you're able to get the gist of how to operate the software without hours of training or looking at manuals. The home screen is free from clutter and has a very direct, intuitive design.

Cons: I think that my only change would be the structuring of the support library. Sometimes it's difficult to find exactly what I'm looking for, but I usually do.

Anabel,

We are happy to hear that you find Neon to be user-friendly! Thanks for your feedback about our support documentation. We are definitely listening, and we are currently in the process of restructuring our Knowledge Base to make it easier to navigate. In an effort to make our support documentation more easily accessible, we also recently added a ¿Help¿ search widget in the bottom right corner of Neon, so you can now search for support articles directly from within your system!

Again, thanks for your feedback as we continue making improvements so our Support Center is easier to access and use.

Pros: It's extremely flexible, customizable, and able to make OOB stuff work with customizations well. There's a pretty extensive list of features available. Their pricing model is highly competitive, and it's easy to understand the pricing structure, which allows you to build the database at your speed. The vendor is a pleasure to work with and responds to online help inquires very quickly and completely. They have been overly supportive for all the road bumps we have had.

Cons: The product's strength - its customization - is also its biggest challenge. It can be unintuitive to piece certain things together to make a process flow well. It requires a technically adept person to dig into the nuances for a good chunk of the more powerful features. A techie should do well, but a novice would have a difficult time with some of the features that make Neon worth it.

Recommendations to other buyers: It was by far the most appealing from a start-up standpoint in terms of cost and willingness to work with us. If you are looking for a quick-to-use tool that you can get up and running in a flash with little capital or effort investment, then it's a great choice. Just understand it will come with more involvement as you uncover more things you want to use.

Comments: I highly recommend using NeonCRM to anyone that is looking for a new CRM system!

Pros: I love that any time I run into an issue, customer support is readily available and it is so easy to type into a search engine and get the answer. The video tutorials are easy to understand and follow. Neon has really taken our organization to another level.

Cons: The only criticism I have is that there are so many functions and ways to integrate with other systems (Survey monkey, QuickBooks, etc) that it can be a little overwhelming at times administrating the whole thing.

Pros: We are a nonprofit affordable housing developer with only 7 employees. I compared numerous software systems to organize our contacts and improve communications and fundraising. NeonCRM is the system we chose in the end. It has all the core features needed at a lower price. We pay $99 a month - other comparable systems were more. The pricing was straightforward and clear - another vendor that I researched was very confusing, with a lot of hidden additional fees. Neon's sales and support team was one of the best that I worked with in my search and comparison. They answered all my questions quickly and were responsive and timely. I felt like an important individual to them, as opposed to another vendor who could not even answer my questions or give me an individual demo, because I was interested in their "less expensive" product. Also, Neon only requires a 90-day notice to terminate service (if that was ever needed for some reason), instead of locking in a 3-year contract like eTapestry.

Cons: The visual aesthetics of the platform are not quite as modern as Blackbaud's eTapestry, but at half the price, it's more than worth the trade-off.

Recommendations to other buyers: SoftwareAdvice.com's recommendations were very helpful - I looked at each vendor they suggested for me. I did a demo with about 6 vendors.

Pros: I have used several products with our non-profit but nothing as easy as NeonCRM. I was doing more with Neon in 30 minutes than I could do with other software after days of training. The software just seem to make sense. In the transition from old to new software there were very little surprises and we were able to convert our own data. Every time we asked a hard question there was a clear answer. The Vendor was gracious during the sale making sure we got what we needed and did not purchase what we did not need. But in the base package with Neon we got a lot more than we got from other vendors.

Cons: I really like how the product was configured to fit our need. We got this product at such a good price I was concerned we were not getting enough. That is when I realized they sold me only what they saw us using so our cost for purchase and change over was very affordable. The communication from the vendor was courteous, helpful, and shared with us termonology so we could speak the same language. After a sign congtract and payment we were up and running in just several days. It all seemed too easy.

Recommendations to other buyers: Look at what you are doing now. What you are using to track information through your organization and call Neon and see what they can do for you. I would be surprised if you are disappointed.

Comments: Fantastic sales and training reps, very robust product and the people who designed it and work with you know fundraising and the particular needs that come with the field

Pros: I love it's easy to use interface, how linked everything is, the ability to track prospective gifts and how it seamlessly interfaces with our website. Also, that online donations automatically get batched to the user's account.

Cons: there are a few quirks on limitations with reporting and social fundraising but they are totally things you can work with to get creative.

Hi Chelsea,

Thanks so much for the kind words! As you probably know, we pride ourselves on knowing nonprofit development inside and out since over 85% of our staff comes from a nonprofit background.

You are correct that there are some limitations on reporting and social fundraising, but the benefit of being a cloud-based system is that we are constantly making improvements and we take feature requests very seriously. We're also happy to pull custom reports based on your specific needs. If there's anything we can do to help, please let us know!

Finally, we'd like to thank Midtown Educational Foundation for joining us at our recent On The Table event. It's always a pleasure to see our nonprofit partners in person!

Comments: Neon Rocks

Pros: This product ticks all of our boxes. Events management, member & donation management and communications all in one platform. I love the integrations with Quickbooks and Mailchimp too!

Cons: Because this is such a powerful CRM database, there are a lot of layers & options. That isn't a bad thing. It's just the nature of the beast. The learning curve is pretty steep. However, the knowledge base is vast. I'm just usually in too much of a time crunch to use it. The helpdesk staff is phenomenal!

Pros: The ability to have customized letters for different levels of membership is extremely useful. Also, the automated emails are fantastic. It is also very cost effective for our organization with 300-350 members.

Cons: NeonCRM has system fields, in particular, Preferred Name, that users can not have access to complete. This prevents us from generating automated emails and letters using Preferred Name because the default is the first name. We have to change the field manually. While it may not sound like a big deal, some of our members have legal first names that do not match their gender identify or use a pseudonym for privacy purposes. We use a custom field, but custom fields can not be used in automated emails and letters. Also, "delete" doesn't mean delete. We deleted an admin user to create a new profile as a system user. Once deleted, the login id can never be reused.

Recommendations to other buyers: Pay for the setup support. We have some members are mail and some that are do not mail. During one of the calls for the setup, the NeonCRM representative suggested separate memberships for mail and do not mail (in -person pick up). That allowed us to create a separate emails and letters for mail and do not mail (no mailing address). That one simple piece of advice was worth the price. I wish we had been told up front not to test with real data because once deleted, a login id can never be reused.

Comments: We have appreciated Neon as a central hub for our CRM and fundraising needs. The customer service is excellent! The capabilities are vast, albeit not very intuitive. Because of this, we've had to simultaneously utilize other programs for aspects that are available in Neon, but we've found too limited or complex to use. While I can't imagine managing our non-profit without Neon, the system itself is a bit of a maze and doesn't always work as fluidly or simply as we expect. We are definitely continuing on with Neon and determined to figure out more of the intricacies as we go. In the meantime - three cheers to their support team!

Comments: The training and follow up are a particular strength of NeonCRM. I appreciate the training videos that may be watched at any time.

Pros: We were particularly drawn to NeonCRM because of its integration with the website product that they also offer. It is great for a donor to be able to make a contribution on our website and have it automatically be added to our database. I also really like how you can create reports and save them for future use. So far, this new system has been very time saving. The training and customer service have been stellar.

Cons: The one thing I have struggled with a little is searching their online resources for answers to questions. We are also still relatively new to the software and I have not yet had a chance to use every feature we will use so I am not sure if it will work as expected though I anticipate it will.

Cons: The trial-and-error beginnings of using an association management software aren't exclusive to NEON; however, some of the difficulty arises simply from having so many options!

Comments: As a growing nonprofit with big dreams, we needed something that can be easy to get up and running, yet grow as we grow. We hit the jackpot! Reading With Pictures is a comic book and literacy nonprofit, so having the ability to have our bright and colorful website easily integrate with our donation, event, volunteer, and e-newsletter sign up pages was a huge plus. What's interesting is that some of our volunteers used to use another popular system and they say that Neon has all the pluses, without any of the minuses. And for a fraction of the cost! I would highly suggest at least investing in a bit of setup help though. They give a lot of training resources to get you up and running but it also helps to speak to someone on the phone when you're just starting up. We were up and running pretty quickly, though we did take a bit to ensure that the online store they provided could be used for some cool (yet not necessarily out of the box) uses, since they let digital downloads be tied to the store. We've been able to grow our donor database, register volunteers with their events module, and put out newsletters that also integrates social media aspects. Ask them about their auto-login feature, its the best and cuts down on duplicates! Customer support is awesome and very responsive. Nothing but praise for this revolutionary platform.

Pros: The database program will grow with the organization. There are many tools to be discovered, allowing an organization to manage many parts of programing and fundraising. Campaigns can be developed to capture the success of multiple fundraisers. The Grant section enables you to manage grant requests and outcome in one place. The staff always responds quickly to questions, and I have found them to be most reliable. The staff will listen to needs and will improve the product for easier use.

Cons: I really like the software. If I were to give it a "least liked," it is that the system is so diverse, we still are not using all the capacity. It takes time to learn each area, but once mastered, it makes running a non-profit much more successful.

Recommendations to other buyers: We have never looked back from day one with this system. Each year, we try to understand and implement a new component of the software. Each year, I recommend this software to folks looking for a better system to manage both their funding and programs. I think the cost is low for what you get! We love the system and believe it is the best bang for the buck!

Comments: When I began as Executive Director at our small non-profit, we evaluated various options before choosing Neon CRM. Coming from my previous position in an environment with more extensive CRM systems, I was impressed with Neon¿s range of capabilities.

As can be expected from such a robust CRM, the learning curve is not trivial. However, Neon's excellent tutorials and ever-present support staff have allowed us to be up and running in far less time that I had thought possible. Without spending thousands of dollars on a fully customized CRM, I had feared that it would be difficult to conduct our business as we were used to doing. Yet, I was happy to realize that we needed to adjust our procedures only a little in adapting to Neon's functioning and, in the process, discovered advantages and opportunities for efficiency. In particular, we have been able to leverage Neon's power to increase our communication to our constituents and to significantly grow our donation base.

What makes Neon truly stand out, in my opinion, is their support. As a former software designer who had supported computer systems in the past, I am amazed at how EVERY assistance request to Neon, from trying to understand how to accomplish our daily tasks to advanced custom issues, was answered, thoroughly and expeditiously.
