Cons My ID's are a pain when I go traveling and need the long code. The process does not always work as intended. PhD student Higher Education Used the software for: Less than 6 months ### "Affordable but unstable" February 9, 2021 3.0 I think it's a really good, affordable alternative, that works with Microsoft word, and a range of foot pedals to help with transcription. If I was a professional transcriber I'd find the instability very frustrating. Pros Easy to use, and the sound quality is very good when listening to video playback. Able to use with an Olympus footpedal. Cons It's the instability that I've found frustrating. Automatic timestamps don't always work, even if you have saved a configuration. Similarly the alternatives such as using Ctrl V or Fn F9 don't always work either. It seems to switch between which command it's using. I've tried restarting but that doesn't always resolve it. Similarly, sound sometimes cuts out and you end up restarting. Sound quality at lower playback speeds can also be poor. The issues you mention such as timestamp insertion not always working do not happen for most users, but when they do, it's because the FTW Transcriber cannot necessarily fully control the external word processing software you are working with. I use it for both video and audio files to produce quality transcripts. Couldn't do my job without it! Pros The natural language processing often enables me to pick up things in this file that other competitor software doesn't. It's a tool I rely on to help me be more proficienct as a transcriber. I've been using this software since 2014 and have recommended it to other transcribers many times. Cons I wouldn't call it a con, but I do think there needs to be flexibility with bass and treble manipulation rather than just volume. I still find the sound quality better overall with this software than with others I've used. We were able to do this successfully and without issue. Pros I found FTW software to be easily adaptable to all types of transcription including video transcription of television. It is easily accessible and was able to handle a diversity of file types. The sound is crisp and clear. Cons There were no difficulties integrating FTW with transcription to an ASP platform or Microsoft Word. I can tweak the automatic rewind of audio, set all my hotkey preferences and timestamp options to my heart's content. I love that the window always stays on top, and how compatible it is with Word as well as providing its own basic wordprocessor. It plays a whole range of files, and I've never had a problem opening video or audio from clients. It's made working as a freelance transcriber much easier. Cons I think the interface looks a little intimidating until you get used to it. There are a lot of options, and it took me a little time to work out how to best to set them all. However, for my second pass on the file and final proofreading, I use FTW Transcriber. Pros I find the volume level is the highest that I can get. I have a number of other software that I use such as Express Scribe, Liberty Digital Court Recorder and even the FTR Player that are softer at maximum volumes. Cons I don't have any right now. I rely on advice and service from FTW and have always been pleased. Pros I did not have experience using this transcription software. I had used other programs, but found them bulky and loaded with features that I wouldn't use. The instructions for set-up and use are easy to follow. Best of all, the software works. The support team is accessible and and responsive. Cons I do wish there were some way to select which recordings to delete without having to delete them all. Pros FTW Transcriber is outstanding for playback of audio and video files in my transcription work. The software plays virtually any audio thrown my way and plays it back flawlessly so that I can hear every word. Cons I had some glitches with it during some Windows upgrades, but I discovered that by starting the software up as an Administrator, those problems disappeared. Reason for choosing The FTW Transcriber The clarity of FTW Transcriber playback makes it one of my go-to audio players. I do use several in my work, but FTW is used very often. No problems up until recently. My licence key keeps dropping out and this morning I had to reset as i received a notification that the software was being used on another computer. I was working on a transcript within 10 minutes of downloading the software. It's pretty self explanatory and user friendly. Cons If you take too long of a break it will freeze up. I avoid that problem by exiting out before I take a break. It always saves my place in the file. The ability to slow the recording down to hear the words more clearly was most conducive to an accurate transcript. It's very user friendly. It is so much easier to use and the clarity is much better than ExpressScribe by far. Cons The free copy of FTW Transcriber is really useless to me. I especially love how easy it is to change the timestamp appearance for different projects. Cons I wish that it didn't immediately go to the beginning of the audio when you get to the end. Sometimes I need to replay the end to get what was said. It works great with my court reporting equipment. The audio is clear. There is no hissing sound like I get with another transcriber from another company. Cons I think the skin is ugly. It has a horrible orange color. It needs to be grey or blue or something other than road side cone orange! We should have a choice of skin color or themes. Pros I have used many transcription software programs, and the audio quality of FTW far exceeds any of them. Cons One thing I do not like is that after a period of inactivity, you have to download the audio again. I was transcribing interviews for a Ph.D. candidate's dissertation topic. It was easy to use and very user-friendly. I would recommend it! Pros It was easy to use and the sound was clear. Playback controls were very helpful since many of the interviews I transcribed were with people who had strong accents, or there was a lot of background noise. The audio quality is amazing, the best I have experienced for any software of this type, and it does everything that I need the software to do. Pros The audio quality on every recording I have made with The FTW Transcriber is always of the highest quality, with no lagging or background crackling audible. The automatic timestamps that are added to recordings are very useful when recording lots of transcripts and needing to quickly find recordings on projects from certain dates and times. Cons The only minor issue I have with The FTW Transcriber is that there is often a delay when I press play to listen to recordings/transcriptions. This does not cause any major issues however.
