Originally, I planned to develop an enterprise-level platform, but the unique functionality I was trying to build was too difficult for me to figure out, and the help wasn't that helpful. Eventually, I gave up on it and went back to building a custom package in C# (Visual Studio). Pros I really like the OutSystems IDE. The developers have made it look great and it's pretty stable. I love how easy it is to set up the data structure then add basic pages. I really liked the training paths offered on the OutSystems website. Cons Low code is sometimes code for difficult-to-extend. I evaluated more than a dozen different PaaS companies in an effort to build a multi-tenant web-based application. I started to get the feeling that most of them catered to the insurance industry. While the out-of-the-box features can be very useful (albeit somewhat difficult to implement for a newcomer) extending the functionality of the platform is a nightmare. Also, while I really liked the training paths offered, the content tended to run a few versions behind. Also, they don't have great training videos on the more complex features. You get good (though dated) training on core functionality and you're left to your own devices on more complex methods. What about if instead of giving tons of excel file You create a complete webapp solution very quickly ? That's what happened in Banor since the adoption of Outsystems some years ago. We installed the platform 5.1 and we are now using the rel. 9 and almost every colleague in our company is now using an application done with oustystems : Risk management, Middle Office, Client Management and we have just released a public Customer Portal. It's great. Pros Easy to use, almost no programming language but only drag and drop, easy integration with our Oracle Database. Instead it allows you to build logic and see your development in action. Cons OutSystems is a great tool but I feel that the Code merge is quite troublesome and we suffer often when working on the same component and the apps built with OutSystems are sometimes slow. October 13, 2018 5.0 The customers for which we deliver projects are from many different industries, we build solutions for field service companies, insurance companies, pension administrators, business consulting companies, etc. Pros The speed in which we can deliver web and mobile applications for our customer, and the developer experience, where most repetitive work is taken care of by OutSystems. Also the fact that it is a complete platform with all the DevOps build in is great! Last but not least the OutSystems community is a very active community of professionals, help is always available very promptly why you get stuck. Cons Debugging capabilities not (yet) up to par with traditional development tools like Visual Studio, especially the ability to change values on the fly and to alter execution path. Pros The excellent learning curve and smooth experience with which you can quickly learn the basics and start developing almost immediately. The clean interface and avid promotion of the use of a 4 layer architecture makes it very easy to read and understand what your peers have done. Cons The separation of web and mobile apps, I would prefer to see them more as a whole which should be coming with the new Reactive Web. Though keep in mind that you can link the two as is. The product feels polished and well thought through. Even months into using it I am finding pleasant surprises in the UI. It feels industrial quality and very solid. Pros Unlike other low code platforms OutSystems has all the functionality you need to complete any task you need. If it can be done in software then the likelihood is you can do it in OutSystems. Other platforms are a bit like a child's piano, where you play a good tune but then run out of notes on the keyboard. With OutSystems it has all the functionality you need and you can extend however you want Cons No much to dislike. Didn't like the odd licencing agreement with Application Objects Reason for choosing OutSystems As mentioned above, OutSystems made the other products feel like toys which were ok until you wanted to do something a bit more stretching. Trained to use code I can create anything. But as I got used to OutSystems, I cannot think of an easier way to create solutions for business problems. It reduced the time spent on a lot of things, leaving time in projects for the new next thing to implement:) Beside that, the model driven development ensures code quality and control. Combined with the excellent usage of LifeTime, going from development, testing, acceptance and production is a breeze. And when it does give some problems, a roll back is just as easy.
