March 17, 2015 5.0 I have been using OutSystems platform do develop the online properties for the NGO I lead. We developed a payment system from scratch, a system to manage applications and different schools for migrants and a dynamic and cool front end. The speed we need to make changes on our web applications and the number of features we need to deliver, given the size of our team (1 developer!) and financial limitations, is only possible with the OutSystems Platform. Pros Fast development, easy to change / maintain apps. Easy to learn (in 2 weeks you'll start rocking OutSystems development with no problem. If you know DB systems, and a high level programming language is enough to learn OutSystems fats and easy. Cons You will need to adapt a little bit to the IDE and it will take you 2 weeks to start being productive. It depends on you (of course). Also, you can start doing things from day 1 though. January 19, 2018 5.0 Pros I like that it's written with React. I like that the mobile app generated (for iOS at least) does a good job at capturing the iOS look and feel. I also like that there are alot of customization options for custom blocks and the fact that you can trigger custom events from those blocks. Cons The id of the control is still not accessible in CSS and we have to resort to jQuery or use classes. The development process is mostly drag and drop and coming from a background of coding every little thing in the systems I've created, it seems at times, that I'm making a macro. We have some technically savvy individuals who are able to take the training videos and are able to start developing applications quickly that focus on solving business problems. Some of the new features that we are seeing coming out will allow them to build systems even quicker. The ability to easily create mobile applications is extremely important as we are moving further to having a mobile workforce. Our organization relies heavily on staff who are in the field and having a good mobile development platform has been a benefit to us. Cons Not so much a negative about the software, but perhaps the process. Governance is an important part of systems development, especially for organizations who are in a transition from traditional software development methods and programmers who write code. Being able to give the ability for safe development practices to be followed (code reviews, code branching) and support for ensuring that we have minimal code sprawl is important. As a recent OutSystems user this platform has really blown my mind and opened my mind to a completely new way of developing. It is very easy to use, super efficient, and it allows deployments to happen very very fast. I would highly recommend OutSystems to any one who need a platform that would allow them to create applications in no time. Cons There is a bit of a learning curve and it is not as wide spread as other developing platform. The community is great and growing. The platform is growing a lot and every new release adds significant features to make the platform aligned with new technologies/approaches. Although customizing user interfaces may be quite time- and labor-consuming. But the end result is great, and the fact that there is built-in versioning systems in place, makes the product great for not only developers, but other aspects of the devops teams. Pros The fact that you can start out as a developer and get something useful done and running in a few hours is great. Great training content online for free, and the free personal environment lets you get started easily. Also a very helpful community, which means that you will almost always get a response to your questions in a short period of time. Technically the product works great. Sometimes the project doesn't build, but then just by switching some detail to a different value and back again, and then trying again to build, usually solves the problem. Cons The product is very pricy. This means that most small businesses will have difficulties to get their business based on Outsystems. It is quite clearly geared towards bigger enterprise customers, and probably not a viable choice for small businesses to base their business on. In turn, the number of available Outsystems-developers is still quite low, presumably because of the price barrier. Review Source SD Selwyn D. With all the lighting fast development you have to be careful you dont lose track of the bigger picture and also make something that connects in that part. Pros You dont need to know all the ins and out about CI, CD, Or deep knowledge of old programming languages. If you are a programmer it all feels familiar straight away. Cons It can be quite expensive, and sometimes when there is performance issues with a lot of integrations it can be hard to proof that its not the outsystems platform thats lagging.
