I think Outsystem as a whole is wreath every penny for what it does. Pros Creating application are very fast. It very easy to use for beginners and non-tech/computer science people. The setup is very simile. Pushing your applications to production is very easy, with one click. Cons The cost was the largest issue for Outsystems. Pros Business processes are easy to map and associate with business rules and the user interface. A very intuitive interface. Visual Studio integration is great, and application development is a much more manageable process. Built-in version control, repository contains all logic and business rules. Change management is less painful thanks to the abstraction of business rules within the system. Cons The cost was much higher than we could afford. The platform has allowed us to replace all our legacy systems in a matter of months. It has enabled us to catch up to our competitors and even surpass some of the incumbents. Soon we will be one of the industry leaders in our sector from a tech standpoint. Pros Outsystems frees up huge capacity on your dev team. You find that for the cost of an average developer you will get a minimum of double the capacity out of your current team. Cons It is hard to say. We have been using it for 18 months now and I believe it is the perfect system for your business apps. OutSystems is powerful, fast, modular, maintainable, scalable, upgradable, and much more. Anything it doesn't do out of the box can be done through its extension mechanism. Pros I liked how OutSystems provides an incredible amount of functionality at your fingertips. It is incredibly easy to whip up a fully functional website within minutes. Customizing, deploying, maintaining, and upgrading is a piece of cake. Redesigning the look and feel is also pretty straightforward. Cons The difficulty with OutSystems is handling NULL values in external databases and in JSON. It also has no native support for dynamic nested data structures such as trees. February 10, 2017 5.0 Having used Outsystems to improve time-to-market on a small order portal/ecommerce project we realized some savings in terms of effort but I feel Outsystems has more to give. This is a limitation of our skillset and knowledge, not the Outsystems platform. Where could Outsystems improve? Documentation. Yes, there's lots of tutorials, courses and videos, but sometimes you just want to google the answer and read it. The forum isn't that great for this as often people share projects and you have to dig inside those to find the answer. This is probably a symptom of Outsystems being a graphical development environment. The other thing you'll find it there's a raft of new terminology to grasp, and a rather disjointed collection of tools: Lifetime, Service Studio, Integration Studio, Forge etc. You'll need a roadmap to find what you need and where it lives. We're currently working on upgrading our environment from v9 to v10 - not as straightforward if you have live production apps running, so it's something to consider. But overall we are very much looking forward to rolling this out across our development teams and users. I'm not finding resistance from my hardcore PHP devs (I re-assure them by building PHP APIs to work with OutSystems), and my junior dev is enjoying the instant rewards of a rapid development platform. Pros Very quick web development and using reactive approach you don't have to code for different devices. Screen adjusts to laptops, tablets, phones, etc. Cons There are not many videos of how to use all features available. They have a site called the forge where you find plugins to implement in your app with instructions but some not easy to follow when you are a beginner.. would love to see more videos on how to use plugins and features. OutSystems is the best overall platform with the largest feature set. Pros First and foremost, OutSystems is the most robust platform I've tried (and I've tried several). Their engineers have gone to great lengths to build in the core functionality that is required for complex, enterprise-grade applications. Their beginner tutorials are amazing - they've actually taken the time to vet their educational materials to make sure they don't introduce errata when platform versions change. The system is fast and certain aspects are literally as simple as drag-and-drop. Cons They don't have a good set of advanced tutorials. You can go to the community but so many of the developers on the platform aren't from native-English speaking countries. The language barrier can be a bit of a challenge when trying to understand more complex components of the platform.
