Many features are very practical for real-world use. Pros Five years ago, I searched for and experimented with many different applications, including those designed using WordPress. I even hired experts on Fiverr, Upwork, or external IT professionals to design my dream community website… But none of them worked. The reasons included the complex technical requirements; the need for significant resources to maintain the system; the high initial costs, often starting at $5,000 for a website that was even considered acceptable; then there were annual license fees, monthly support fees for experts… This was incredibly difficult for a new entrepreneur. And I failed countless times. I lost a tremendous amount of money each time I failed. I went from enthusiastic to unsuccessful until I found the phpFox platform, and now MetaFox, about 5 months ago. Web Developer Online Media Used the software for: 6-12 months ### "Review Of phpFox/MetaFox" July 4, 2025 5.0 I have been using phpFox/MetaFox, there new social media script for some time now. I've tried other social media community scripts, wasted money and been very disappointed but this one is by far the best and most professional. The software is fully responsive and includes a PWA and most of the features you would expect from a social media script, the only thing missing at the moment is Reels and they are very open to new feature requests, but as this script is relatively new I'm sure they will be adding Reels soon. There are also extra Apps/Plugins to extend your site so you can really customize it to meet your needs. Updates are around every month with new features and bug fixes. It also has a very comprehensive AdminCP to control all aspects of the site. The support team are excellent, helpful and prompt, when I first installed MetaFox on my site I found a couple of bugs but they where soon rectified and included in the next updates. They also have a very good community forum for help, tips and support and tutorials, although the tutorials could be better and more comprehensive. Overall MetaFox gives you a robust and trustworthy product that you can really work with and would I recommend it to anyone wishing to start up their own social community. Just when you get your site running well there will be an update that messes with everything. You will need your own team of developers that will be cheaper in the long run. Pros If you need a social platform up and running quickly it can be done with PhpFox... but it will cost you $$$ Cons It is ALWAYS buggy, server resource heavy, and will always conflict with the 3rd party addons. Every update will cause site and server issues. It is very expensive to maintain and expand if there is a need for more features. PhpFox and 3rd party addon developers will always need access to your admin site panel and cPanel because more than likely no matter how experienced of a developer you might be, you will need their help. PhpFox customer service is very expensive and very unpredictable. I would encourage the team to continue to focus on making the features more intuitive for the end user to use and flexible for the admin to manage. Continue to improve ability for admin to manage the site via the back-end admin dashboard and the frontend website (as a member themselves) with some cross-functional admin abilities on the front-end and back-end. The platform is feature rich and continues to fulfill a lot of my members needs. Keep up the excellent work. Cons The ChatPlus add-on App has a lot of potential and features that are missing or not yet fully enabled for site admins to implement on their sites. For example, the ability for all members to see a list all other members that are currently online at any one time (currently members can only see their friends who are online). In addition, Admin/Member created chat rooms are not easy for other members to locate (members need to search for the room by name); and video/voice chat does not include the ability for users to write text in a message box while sharing their webcam. Cons Getting the white label app into the Play Store was a struggle but that's not phpfox's fault, it is however the most aggervating thing I have done for my social site so far, just wanted others to know what to expect when getting your own apps. After I previously let the annual support fee lapse for a period, I renewed last year and intend to keep supporting this as I have a new site in mind to use it for. Pros It offers a lot of functionality for creating sites tailored to different audiences. It has matured into a stable platform and I find the look clean and familiar. The more recent addition of docker builds makes it straight forward to deploy and the availability of source code is reassuring. Cons As with any piece of software that has evolved over a long period, there is a learning curve to familiarise yourself with, both with planning the functionality and fine tuning the underlying infrastructure. At times I feel the performance could be a little snappier, but been adequate for my use so far. One area I feel is missing for a modern web platform is automation triggers inbound and outbound, either by web hooks, and API or to services like zappier etc to facilitate integrations with other platforms and SaaS tools. Even then, the stability and the features introduced were far superior. Social Engine comes close, but I think the primary thing that puts PHPFox over all others in it's class is the mobile application for both IOS and Android. You can have your own social media platform up and running and in the app store in a matter of weeks if you stay on top of things. I am in the process of having PHPFox perform custom development to migrate custom work i completed in version 3 to MetaFox web/mobile. Hopefully all goes well. If it does, then I can foresee my company utilizing this solution for years to come. Pros PHPFox is very feature rich out of the box. Marketplace, blogs, forums, photos, groups, polls quizzes... the list goes on. It also serves as a solid content management system. There are plenty of tools to track and monitor site activity. Easy to deploy and install on web host server. Solid development backing from the developers PHPFox also provides the source code for both mobile and web applications at the highest licensing tier. Their customer support is spot on, even though there is an 8 hour time zone difference and all tickets are handled via an internal text based ticketing system Cons While the latest version of PHP is far more responsive and stream lined that version 3, the underlying Laravel Platform is far different from the previous PHP application structure which makes customization extremely difficult if your not familiar with that coding practice. Upgrade from Version 3 to 4 and now to 5 has proven cumbersome with a noteable amount of missing capabilities on some pre existing core features. However, the latest MetaFox V5 is in it's infancy and shows promise if the developers commit to introducing all of the previous features of version 4. License and cost is high in comparison to some competitors. But its perpetual from what I understand and customers are free to modify the code as they see fit to meet their business purposes. Upgrading from one version to the next is extremely cumbersome, especially if there is custom work involved. August 1, 2018 5.0 I love their staffs, knowledgeable and friendly, even sometimes their English is not perfect. The software has a modern look and feel, similar to Facebook, so it is easy to start. Also, it can scale well when I use a stress test tool with a reasonable amount of access and data, so it is good. They also provide services so it is helpful for the small agency in my case. Pros I came to phpfox from ads in google and started with a trial version. Besides phpfox, I also tried some of their competitors and some free solutions. However, none of them provided a free server and free installation, so phpfox gains a plus. I also tried support to ask for a scaling solution when my users grow. Most of them asked me to contact 3rd party developers. Whatttt? Luckily phpFox staffs proposed a scaling model and I can say it works. That's the point. I need a full-stop solution since I am an agency, not a developer. I decided to go with phpfox last year, and I have never regretted. Cons There are several add-ons that the stock phpfox does not offer, so they recommended using other 3rd party developer ones. So I need to contact several people to get the site done. Pros This is a very good product with lots of features and many customization options. This is a big point of difference from other companies with this product/service. The staff is always very patient with me. They also release updates and new features regularly. Cons I'd love if the company could have longer working hours so turn-around time is faster. More detailed reporting for admins would be helpful. It would be great if the 3rd party apps that integrate with the browser version could also work in some capacity on the native mobile app. Sometimes I run into a limitation and custom work is cost prohibitive for my small budget (although probably charging a reasonable rate).
