Clio

Clio Overview:

### Key takeaways

Insights from verified Capterra reviews

Clio is a cloud-based law practice management tool primarily used by small legal firms for daily case tracking, billing, and client communication. It stands out for its intuitive time tracking and invoice creation features, with integrations such as QuickBooks and LawPay. Users consistently flag reporting limitations and email syncing issues. In 2025, Clio introduced Drafting AI to streamline document creation.

### Our verdict

Clio is a practical choice for small legal teams that need a centralized system for managing cases, billing, and client communication. While it simplifies daily operations, buyers should expect occasional bugs, limited reporting flexibility, and added costs for advanced tools such as Clio Grow or Drafting AI. For firms prioritizing ease of use over deep customization, the trade-off may be worthwhile.

I am still drawn to Clio that possesses rich case management features but definitely a more interactive adoption of user suggestions and expansion definitely of its reports is needed.

Pros

Taking into consideration the word "Overall" - the Clio experience has been good. We experienced some minor hiccups in customer service this month, March 2026 which was resolved by escalation. The issue could have been quickly resolved had the representative looked at the issue commonsensically but it was a painful experience BUT one that was resolved. Resolution is the Goal right?

Cons

Thinking outside the box with some customer service representatives; I feel they should indeed lead to "opening the eyes" of the user with their insights.

Overall having a CRM, email, builder, and billing all in one neat program was worth the extra cost. Everyone onboarded quickly and painlessly as well. So it's a win

Pros

Really cleans up the Desktop instead of 5 different programs we just have one now. What was something bad about Cleo?

Cons

Well of course the cost. They "bundled" me. In order to get all the components we wanted /needed we had to jump up a tier which put is in the hundreds....but it's still manageable

My overall experience with CLIO was great. In the few months I used it, I was able use it very easily with not complications

Pros

It is great with managing data and storing information. Very easy to use and navigate. Great for organizing.

Cons

I do not like how it does not alert when there are duplicate entries. Therefore you can have duplicate entries and won’t know

I love Clio, I think it has very good benefits and it fits our needs perfectly. It is fully customizable and we love the client portal.

Pros

I love the customer service if I ever have an issue they will address it right away. I also love that I can customize my files my way and organize my documents as I wish.

Cons

The banking system is a little complicated. We use Clio and quickbooks and all transactions have to be inputted a certain way or it will disrupt the accounting.

We love Clio as a firm. This platform constantly grows and it is growing with our firm. Clio is the most reliable software we have at the firm

Pros

They consistently listen to feedback to make their program better and user friendly. Anytime I have questions or an issue, a representative is quick to help.

Cons

I do not love when I click on client client calendars it only shows up coming events. It is helpful to see past events to show how much one has worked on a file or if the dates come into question for court applications.

The product is fine - the reports are wonky to be honest. For example, summary total columns are excluded when you view multiple users, and are not included at all in CSV. Why would you not include a "total" at the bottom of every report. Its like the one thing you actually want to see, and its strangely missing. The responsiveness to my complaints about this, has been underwhelming.

Pros

Clio document management and the billing and invoicing is easy to use and is helpful. The email reminders have already brought up some old AR that was unrecognized, and started bringing it in.

Cons

THe data integration was a mess. It still is. I signed up in October, migrated end of December, and in mid February cannot get an accurate report for the fees earned in January. I have called and spoke with multiple people, and none are able to help. I asked to generate one report - and Clio is unable to generate the one report after the migration - how much revenue did my attorneys actually bring in based upon the hours they worked. Clio does not migrate this data. Despite me saying this is the one report I want, and being reassured I could get it. When they could not generate it, they just told me to hire an outside consultant. They are evaluating an offset of my fees, but no promises, and no solutions as of yet.

Clio has been great overall. I can communicate with clients easily, and the integrations make doing every day tasks easy. The AI support is also a really good feature. 9 times out of 10, it can answer my questions while also showing me step by step how to it.

Pros

Clio makes managing client files super easy. I like that we have the option to send documents for e-signature, and that Clio lets us know when it has been viewed and signed. The Outlook integration is amazing, if a coworker is unavailable for a specific client, I can go to the communications tab and see what is going on in their file.

Cons

In order to do things, such as creating a bill, it takes way too many clicks to accomplish. I would like it better if there was simply a button we can push.

Overall experience was a 9/10. I used Clio for very basic things and I enjoyed it. My law firm needed more overall so we switched systems but I’m sure I would’ve still enjoyed Clio just the same.

Pros

I liked the ease of use. It was easy to navigate without have to watch long tutorials. It was also very easy to upload and draft necessary documents. I also enjoyed being notified when clients texted back.

Cons

I was not a huge fan in how the communication was displayed. When looking at email threads it was a bit hard to understand who contacted who and who said what.

I've been user for several years, but its evolution, combined with some additional training, has made it a vastly more valuable tool.

Pros

It has evolved into a whole practice tool, including matter management, automation and CRM management.

Cons

The inability to charge payment processing fees to clients is a persistent irritant. Second, there must be a better way to manage fields in Clio Draft so that they are more uniform and easily accessible, lest they get broken when they are modified for a new template.
