Pros: easy of use, rich-feature set

Cons: no really con, just a suggestion for adding SQLite and POSTGis Formats

Overall: As a geographer and longtime Mapviewer (since version 2) I like Mapviewers rich featureset, but the best feature is, that Mapviewer is extremely easy to use. The latest version 8 has a ribbon-based user-interface. I must confess, that it took me some time to adopt the new GUI after using the traditional interface for years, but now I would not like to go back. The new GUI makes producing maps even more streamlined.

With Mapviewer you can produce 16 different maptypes:
Base
Pin
Choropleth
Contour
Symbol
Density
Territory
Vector
Line Graph
Gradient
Bar
Flow
Prism
Pie
Cartogram
Multi-graph

You can also download maps from online webmapping-services (WMS).

Of course you can add and modifiy map-titles, scalebar, legend, inlet-maps etc. One of my personal highlights are the drawing-features: You can easily add arrows, rectangles and so: No need to use an extra drawing-program like its necessary with many other mapping-software.

Mapviewer supports a lot of different import and export-formats, e.g. Shapefile to name just the most common industry-standard. On my personal wishlist are SQLite and POSTGIS, which currently are not supported. Of course you can export production-quality-maps in various formats.

You can also digitize and edit new features with Mapviewer e.g. create new polygons, line, points , break apart polygons and lines, union polygons etc. There are various projections and datums available. Mapviewer also offers GIS-functionality: you can create buffers and query boundaries even on different layers that meet specific criteria.
