Insite elevation pro has been very beneficial for our estimating department to be able to accurately take off earthwork projects. Pros Training. The training tutorials, videos, and classes make it very easy for a beginner with little to no experience learn how to use the software effectively. That was incredibly important for me and my company to be able to teach ourselves on our own time. Cons The cost. Overall the cost is very good for what you get, however, it would be nice to see the prices come down a touch. As the sole estimator at my company, it is imperative to have a good estimating software and that I have the resources to use it. InSite has accomplished that. They also seem to be constantly hard at work ensuring further development and new features. I am excited to see an in-program material catalog, but am looking forward with greater eagerness to layered/phased proposed grades and phased subgrades, as well as an intersect tool for subgrades. These would be the biggest help in my personal process. Pros I like it's accuracy, ease of use, and wide range of features. But most of all, I'd have to say I appreciate the ability to quickly view (and review) the site you have created using 3D live views, and even to overlay your takeoff to real world views using export to KMZ. Cons The price tag might be a little disheartening, but it is worth it for the speed, accuracy and consistency offered by this program. I don't think we could create as many accurate takeoffs or submit as many bids without it. Not really a "con" but I also discuss features in my "overall experience" which I think would help me the most in my takeoff process. Estimator-Project Manager Construction Used the software for: 2+ years ### "User Experience with Insite Elevation Pro" February 16, 2026 5.0 Anytime there is an issue or I don't know how to do something, Insite's customer support is readily available and knowledgeable to answer questions. If needed, they can quickly remote into the program to look at it directly, not only telling me what to do but also showing me. Insite also periodically makes updates to take care of any gliches that may come up, and also add new features to improve program features and functions. for example, they recently added a feature to adjust the size of the numbers and letters that are printed on the printout maps, to match the size of the map and make them more readable when printed. Just like any estimating program, you have to learn how to input the information so it's useable when it comes out, but overall I've found this process relatively easy, and the reports very informative and useful. It creates accurate and useful data and maps very quickly and efficiently, and is a good value for the money. Pros I have been estimating for decades, going back to digitizer boards and early desktop computers. I've watched the evolution from them to takeoffs on multiple large monitors and lightning fast computers. Elevation Pro has proven to be very fast and efficient at inputting information. On multi-page projects, I can set plan scale and tie plans together in minutes. Being able to pull up multiple plan sheets simultaneously, I can cross reference and input data from multiple sources without having to get out of one to get into the others. While tracing contours, sloping lines, subgrades, etc., vector points pop up ahead of where I've traced, making imputing the data faster and more accurate. Cons The vector points are very useful, but they tend to be very jittery, popping in and out. Sometimes when multiple lines are close together, it can be like a wack-a-mole trying to click on them before they disappear again. It can be a little intense, but you get used to it. I would also like to be able to cut out sections of a subgrade, such as islands in a parking lot, without having to keyhole them, or rely on using higher numbered areas to accomplish this. Relying solely on numbered areas requires you to perfectly plan ahead for every contingency before you begin. If something changes or unknowns become apparent, you may have to redo some or all of the data. Fortunately, entering subgrade data is very fast, so it minimizes the hassle. It saves me countless hours of cut and fill calculations, provides very clear and accurate results, and is very user friendly. The technical support they provide to their customers is great, and the development team is very active about optimizing the software to it's customers. My only caveat about the product is I do still use other takeoff software to do measurements besides the cut and fill quantities and surface square footage. That being said, the combination of InSite and another software like Bluebeam is still far cheaper per month in subscriptions than the more expensive earthwork software out there. Pros The accuracy of cut and fill quantities for the amount of time spent working on a project in InSite Elevation can provide is top notch. To complete a cut and fill by hand and calculate it on your own to the degree of detail InSite can do would take exponentially more time. We are considering moving to Trimble Business Center, simply because of the Geolocate use with our equipment, but otherwise would stay in a heartbeat, if you don't use Geolocate equipment (at least Trimble), this is hands down the best Pros Great value. Ease of use. They seem to be updating it regularly, which is great because it keeps adding features with no cost increase. Cons It does lag and/or freeze up occasionally, which could be my laptop. My company is a General Contractor and we use the system for takeoffs to assist with budgeting and reviewing subcontractors quantities in hard bids. My estimating team and I have utilized both their on site training classes and virtual classes to help us become proficient. Every update has been a step to make this easier and smoother to use. Pros 3D Elevations are what we utilize most as it helps show our clients their end product. We also love to show clients options for balancing their sites to help add value and savings. Cons I miss the sloping lines option that you could click points in a line and make them connecting spot elevations. You kind of still have this option but it's not as easy as it was years ago. March 7, 2023 5.0 I have had the pleasure of using InSite Elevation Pro and talking with the customer service/ support whenever I have questions about the software. Their support is unlike any other company I have contacted as they are highly trained and experts on their software. I am always able to find a solution within minutes of contacting them. It speaks volumes and shows a company cares about its users when it has a good customer service team. Pros The thing that I enjoy the most about InSite Elevation Pro is that it is a constantly evolving software, with new updates rolling out consistently through the year. The node snapping is super useful and saves so much time when tracing gradelines, subgrades, and strip areas. Cons The only feature that I feel could be improved is with the subgrades and stripping. If a higher tier subgrade/ strip area overlaps a lower tier subgrade/ strip area, there should not be a blending of the two colors, as it makes it a little confusing. Senior Estimator Construction Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Great Earthworks Software" March 5, 2020 5.0 As a specialty contractor, we use this software exclusively for earthworks, and do not use some of the higher-level utility and building functionality. Prior to getting InSite, we used a program that imported earthworks lines by hand with a digitizer. By switching to InSite, we were able to save hours in digital contour selection. Nowadays, most of our clients will give us vector PDF or CAD files, so the earthworks calculations are even faster. I could not imagine going back to digitizing by hand, so I consider this software to be essential for our company. Pros Saves tons of time, especially when we can import digital files. Cons Not the most updated User Interface, although I understand that is about to be updated with a new software version release. Pros The functionality and ease of use is by far the best we have seen compared to the other earthwork programs we have used. The program has all of the features we would expect at a price point that fits well in our budget, especially when compared to some of the other 'big name' programs available on the market. Cons Our only complaint so far is the stripping reports / cut fill reports do not distinguish between topsoil stripping and demolition items, separating the stripping qtys between topsoil and demo has to be done manually as far as we have found. We do not input boring information, so that may be a way around that. We have not downloaded the latest version yet however and from what I've read several changes and improvements have been made and we are very excited to see what they are. March 2, 2021 5.0 There are only two employees in the office to handle all administrative, estimating, and project management duties. It was essential for our company to streamline the takeoff process in order to efficiently and accurately complete estimates in a timely manner. InSite has made this possible for us. Pros This software is very intuitive. After learning a few shortcut command keys, my takeoff times have decreased by half from my previous takeoff software. I am impressed with the ability to visualize the data and make adjustments as necessary. The feature that sold me was vector recognition, and especially the ability to trace broken vectors. I use that on every single takeoff. Cons I would love the ability to export takeoff quantities right into our airtable database. We have heard of a new, more user-friendly interface that will be available, but we haven't seen it yet. Estimator Construction Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Great, easy to use program with terrific customer service" December 5, 2022 5.0 Pros With the latest update, InSite Elevation Pro is definitely the most user friendly earthwork software that I have used in order to generate cut / fill quantities and to generate some other useful images as well. The software allows you to build 3d models with a click of a button, and cut / fill shading schemes which allow for great visual presentations. The plans can also be exported to Google Earth Pro which is also a really useful feature. Training and customer support are also top notch. If there is a question about the software, chances are the answer is right in the user manual with a video to accompany it. Cons There are a few features that have not yet been transferred to the newest update of elevation pro (mainly area cut / fill), but from what I have heard, these features, plus more will be coming soon. I do not have many cons with this software.
