Assoc. Lecturer Higher Education Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Fred-University of Toledo" December 3, 2025 5.0 Perfect. Ive used it since 1999 when I was at GE. It is an excellent general-purpose statistics platform and my "go to". The new "design space" (AI functions) look crazy amazing, but I need to learn it 1st. I just learned about it today (12/3). Can it convert ".tsv" files? This is a weird format the PatentsView exports patents in bulk. Pros Ease of use, lack of need for time-wasting coding (like in R). The new design space looks incredible but I need to learn about it (I just heard of it now). Also, I forgot if Minitab has a row count limitation like Excel. I routinely go beyond the Excel limit of approx. 1mil. It is just that a lot of the data I use comes in bulk, and I have to prep it after I download it (you can look at PatentsView, a source of bulk patent data. These are GB-sized data sets in a .tsv format--a very inconvenient format). I use Minitab for almost all of my quant work except the multivariate tools like MCA or EFA. The rest is all Minitab. Cons It seems weak on some data mining techniques like Multiple Correspondence analysis and Exploratory Factor analysis. That was the only reason I every used JMP. But their subscription model is expensive and a pain in the A-- to renew, so you guys should be easily able to cashier them (I plan to preplace it with KNIME anyways). Switched from [JMP](https://www.capterra.com/p/151815/JMP-Statistical-Software/) JMP has better multivariate and EFA but they are expensive and I will replace JMP with KNIME. Initial learning curve easily surpassed Pros When it comes to something as complex as statistical analysis or something as simple as making graphs, Minitab is one of the most comprehensive solutions you've got there. For process control based work, the Control Charts option is just a breeze; providing results for datasets of 10k rows in a matter of seconds Cons Pricing option could be a little bit more friendly. I use it almost everyday for continuous improvements. I am now learning how to use the predictive tools. I highly recommend this product. Pros It is the most user friendly statistical software I have ever used for continuous improvement projects. A great value for the money. Cons I find the spread sheets a little cumbersome to use compared to Excel. However, exporting data to Excel is a viable option, so it is not a show stopper. It does the job well enough for what I need. Pros It is very easy to use and offers a lot of functionality relative to complexity. Can do all the statistical tests and in particular it can create clean and simple graphs. Cons Sometimes analysing large amounts of data, e.g. many variables, is not easily automated and requires a lot of steps to process and then run analyses in many separate tabs, which can be hard to track. " May 27, 2025 4.0 I've been using Minitab since 2004, when I started my Six Sigma training. It was the tool used by Canada Post taking on a new role of Process Excellence Advisor. I did not study stats in school, so stats was something that intimidated me. But over time I used it often in many projects I led. When I was certified as a Six Sigma Black Belt (2005) I was comfortable with it enough to coach others in using it. Once I started training Lean and Six Sigma I used it extensively. I still train LSS using it. But, as you read my pros and cons, you'll see most of my clients don't use it beyond training. I'm seriously considering using only Excel in future training. Pros For non-statistic people who need stats and make data-driven decisions, Minitab is user friendly. The Assistant and Help features are very good. The Assistant functions guide you choose the right analytical methods / tools and Help on their website, and the output of the Assistant aids in analyzing the results. You can copy/paste data from Excel in there worksheets and it functions a lot like Excel, only it has more features and visually appealing graphs. Cons It's a bit intimidating to get started. I was totally intimidated by stats at the start of training (2004), and even though Minitab had the Assistant and Help functions, they were not quality they are today. The bigger issue I have with Minitab is the pasting of data from Excel isn't always a simple copy and paste. The columns don't always copy as intended. There is sometimes manipulation of the data in Excel needed to copy smoothly into Minitab. The other big con is the annual cost. It's not a cheap software. But if you're looking for a strong analytics tool, and need the statistics to make strong data-driven decisions, it's the one I go to. I've trained hundreds of Green and Black Belts on Lean and Six Sigma, and truth is, most never use Minitab beyond the training, or they call on me when they need something more than Excel can offer. For many, the basics of Excel is enough. Fact is most people and organizations I train/mentor and coach are interested in Lean vs Six Sigma, Minitab as a tool is far more than most CI leaders need. The industry you are in will play a big role in if Minitab is the right tool for you. Very few companies interested in applying Lean care about measuring DMPO or Cpk / Ppk or if their process are at 3.5 sigma or 4.5 Sigma...And for 99% of companies 6 sigma is out of reach and not something they aspire to reach. I have institutionalized Minitab at 3 organizations but the new pricing model has caused those all those organizations to move away from anytime. By moving away from the concurrent license model not only increase the price of the product it also increased overhead for the organization to monitor and control a signing licenses to users. Pros Easy to use and trustworthy. Cons Cost! The removal of the concurrent license process has made many tab unaffordable to many organizations and even increased overhead in those organizations to monitor and pass out individual licenses. Cons My least favorite part is probably the interface. Compared to newer software, it can feel a bit dated, and sometimes navigating through options feels less intuitive than it could be. Also, it can be quite expensive, which might be a barrier for individuals or smaller teams. While it's great for standard analyses, if you need really custom or complex modeling, you might find yourself wishing for more flexibility, perhaps like you get with code-based tools. Only criticism is they should be conscious that there are many legacy files that company need to revisit at times and should be able to open regardless of how old the file is. Pros It is an excellent tool to teach Lean Six Sigma and basic statistics across all sectors and it has an excellent ecosphere. Cons License upgrades that make historical files redundant. We upgrade our minitab licenses routinely but should be worried about legacy clients looking for us to fixed the old minitab files. User friendly and easy to understand available options as well as output interpretation. Pros A software package with a wide range of options for statistical analysis, quality control, GR&R, DOE, process development and many other applications. Cons There is low or no control on graphical views and data visualization especially when there are many data sets and you would like to visually compare them (for example change the transparency of various sections in a graph).
