HoudiniEsq is easy to learn and use, and because it costs so much less than what we were using before, every user in our organization can have a seat, rather than just 3 of us as we had before. It syncs with Outlook and QuickBooks, and customer support is always free!

Pros

The fact that everyone in our firm can use it and enter their own time and calendars.

Cons

There are occasional problems with the way it integrates with Outlook and Quickbooks.

Main features work well. However there are some important issues that need to be corrected. 1) In "Matters" we cannot get a list of cases in their order of arrival date (yes it does give you date order for the cases that have been last modified but this really isn't useful), What is needed is listing by arrival dates. One can make arrival date column in "Key Dates" but you can't list using it which sucks. Also you cannot get a lit of other "Key Dates" in Matters. If you can then please add these functions to "Matters" section as an option. These would be very useful features. 2) Sometimes it looses some of my cases especially if someone else has made the case and then appointed it to me. 3) the search field is usually not working. Sometimes it finds the words written to it but mainly it just runs for a while with no results. 4) We should be able to customize the names of some headings like district and county as we use these for different purposes 5) Some of the sections like "Project" never work 6) Something good: it lists activities etc. very nicely and that function is working well

Pros

it's easy to use. easy to enter payments and expenses. i love the accounts receivable report. the customer support is great. integration with outlook and word is very useful

Cons

it doesn't have some reports we would like to use and sometimes we have issues with the invoices. We have to restart the program once in a while and sometimes after updates we have issues.

The product is good and becoming great. Keep up the hard work. The customer service is excellent and it is obvious that all employees and member care deeply about their service and product. The billing functions are outstanding and offer all the functionality and customization one could hope for.

Pros

Full blown sophistication required for lawyers Speed much faster than 1.9 version.

Cons

At the beginning, there were some kinks but at this point mostly addressed as far as I can tell.

We began our journey with HoudiniESQ back in November 2012. It was a little bumpy getting started; we are a small general practice (3 to 4 attorneys) running QuickBooks Pro on a cash basis, and we do a lot of Matrimonial and Family Law that includes NYS Assigned and Attorney for Child cases. We didn't want to run our data in the Cloud so we chose to host on-site (which we were very pleased HoudiniESQ offered). Getting our data transferred from QuickBooks Pro into Houdini was the biggest hurdle; but Eric and Kevin from HoudiniESQ were both great help in walking us through the transition. I will not lie -- it took us nearly 3 months to get all the bugs worked out; but I have to say I'm really pleased with the end result. And, most of our challenges presented because we were already operating with QuickBooks Pro and we wanted to continue to do so. HoudiniESQ is really amazing software; and, we've figured out some work-arounds so that we are now running smoothly most of the time. I also really like the links to Outlook Calendar and Word, as well as how every invoice saves as a PDF to the matter in Houdini. We've been able to significantly reduce the amount of paper filing we are doing in our office.

This software needs to be able to upload larger files to the documents sections. Being that we are a personal injury law firm, it would be more convenient for it to be able to upload large medical records files.

Kristi, thank you of your review. We will relax the upload limit. Currently it is set to 50MB per file. We do understand that files these days are much larger. You can expect this limitation to be increased to 150MB per individual file in an upcoming release. I believe it is in Build 2.0.0.165

"The future of legal case management is HoudiniESQ... The HoudiniESQ team understands how case management software is supposed to improve a law firms workflow. What is different about HoudiniESQ is that everything you do is an event. Everything is an event that is billable. Read an email, it gets billed. That's right, as you read your email it gets billed. If you draft a document it automatically gets billed. Schedule an appointment, not only is it automatically billed, click a button when you schedule it and an email is sent telling the client the date and time of the event. I can go on and on. This application is the future of PMS. This is the way to practice.

Pros

Tight integration with Microsoft Office. If I don't have access to my own computer I can still work because HoudiniESQ includes its own integrated tools for Email, document management and assembly, billing , invoicing, contact and matter management.

Cons

None that we care about but it would be nice to have integrated document annotations.

PROS - Seems like it does everything / most of everything we wanted from a case management software, and it's free for solo practitioners! This is huge. It's the reason I tried it, more than once. CONS - Not user friendly. I couldn't figure anything out. It was all very unfamiliar - the layout, workflow, and terminology all felt cumbersome and confusing. The "Help" portal was glitchy and usually didn't work when I clicked on a page to read the instructions. I also could never figure out how to access it remotely. I called customer service, and while they were somewhat helpful (I got the gist of what they said the problem was), they ultimately did not help me solve any of my problems. I am computer saavy, but they made me feel like an idiot on the phone. I was embarrassed that I couldn't even get to a level of basic functioning, and I didn't want to be bothering Customer Service all the time, so I just quit trying to use Houdini altogether. I've never had so much difficulty with a software before. I'm dumbfounded.

I downloaded HoudiniESQ after opening my own firm six months ago. I appreciated the ability to download it immediately without having to go through a service rep, the fact that it was free to a solo like me, and that there were plenty of instructional videos to accompany the download. However, the system just did not work for me. No matter how many instructional videos I watched and how much time I invested into figuring it out, it didn't make sense. Nothing was intuitive. I have been a practicing attorney for seven years, so I have worked with case management systems before - it's not that I don't understand the concept, I just don't understand Houdini. After a few weeks of trying to figure it out, I gave up and went with a paid version.

The Software is the best value on the market and is very intuitive and full featured. There is a steep learning curve, however after some time using the software you will find out how amazing this software can be: Whether Organizing your case Documents; Document automation, or Automated Tasks, this software is very robust. Additionally, the software does some things that other software do not do at all, such as the automatic billing for email function that is built into the Outlook add-in. I am very happy with this investment. One suggestion, though, they need to add a quick bill tab to every screen to capture billable time.

Cons

Since upgrading to version 2.0 there is not a quick bill button to add billable time immediately. There is a workaround which requires using the timer, but that just adds two more steps for recording my billable time.

I am an advanced legal software consumer. I have been using Lexis Nexis TimeMatters / Billing Matters for over 15 years. Ever since Lexis Nexis began their policy of charging a "reinstatement fee" to their loyal users that had dropped off the annual maintenace plan, I have been looking for a replacement LPM solution. This is it! It has all of TimeMatters features and a whole lot more! And the best thing of all, it is FREE for solos like myself. I am seriously considering paying the $792 to have ALL of my TimeMatters data imported over to this platform, but for now I'm just moving over the current years data. So instead of paying Lexis Nexis $2,100 in reinstatement fees for a 3 user setup (I don't use 2 of the users) I can still save over $2,000 that I can spend on other necesities.

Pros

Document Automation, Workflow triggers, INTAKE FORMS completely relational database across all record types.

Cons

Nothing so far!

It never worked properly, so we after investing time and resources, we had to abandon it. The company refused to refund the cost even though their customer service support admitted that the program failed to work properly.

It never worked properly, so we after investing time and resources, we had to abandon it. It didn't sync properly with GSuite and Quickbooks. It's automated billing was a nightmare. It added a lot of time, but it was based on the email subject line. So if there were 10 email exchanges under the same subject line, there would be 10 duplicative billing entries.

Reason for choosing HoudiniESQ

Purported time and billing solution and integration with Quickbooks. But it didn't work.

I have tried Time Matters, Clio, Rocket Matters and Pro Docs. I switched to HoudiniESQ and have not looked back. I have been using HoudiniESQ for about six years now. In that time, I have experienced unparalleled customer service and product support. Its simply amazing. HoudiniESQ cares about their customers and product and it shows. They have a great software program because they listen to their customers needs and respond to them. And lawyers nonetheless. Who wants to listen to a bunch of lawyers complain? Technology, like law, is an ever evolving business. HoudiniESQ lives in both worlds and they know what they are doing. If you are a lawyer reading this and thinking about making the switch to HoudidESQ, do it. You will end up asking yourself why you didn't do it sooner. I'd give ten stars if that option was available on this site.

The product is simply amazing. I often forget that I'm using a web browser. The product has rich easy to use features and the support is top notch. The product acts and feels like a desktop application. HoudiniESQ seamlessly integrates with Microsoft Office an Quickbooks. It supports calendaring, email management, document management, contact management, document assembly, email and document merges and template creation. Trust accounting, billing and invoicing. I can't list all the features. It does what 30K legal practice managements systems at a fraction of the cost.

The Outlook plugin supports email, contacts and the calendar but there is no way presently to create email templates in OUtlook. You must use the Houdini interface to create your email templates.

HoudiniEsq is a well thought out. We use the product to centralize five district claims offices. The product is very flexible. We can customize the product easily. We have added new fields in seconds with rules and validation. This has proved to be a very valuable feature for us. In the past important data was stuffed into memo fields making the recall of this data almost impossible. Another really great feature is the workflow automation and how it is linked to the document automation feature. We are very document heavy. Being able to generate the necessary documentation automatically was a real selling point for us. HoudiniEsq does have a learning curve, but once you are familiar with just a few concepts, everything else starts to fall into place real quickly. Our staff love this product.

I have used HoudiniEsq for 2 1/2 years, and I'm sorry it took me so long to switch. I was a TimeMatters user dating back to 2000, and was very happy for the first several years. But once I switched to a Cloud Based system, I could never imagine going back to a server based. But what sets Houdiniesq apart is it's customer service. Last summer I asked for a small change to the program - something new. The head tech guy contacted me, and the change was implemented in a few weeks! I really could not believe that I asked a software company to change their product and they did. I haven't used the other products, but if you are looking for a case management system where you can communicate with the CEO and suggest changes that are implemented, HoudiniEsq is it. As a newly licensed, solo practioner, I was very excited to learn of Houdini's existence. When I first embarked on using the program, I thought, now I see why they named it Houdini. It was not very user friendly to me. I had a very difficult time maneuvering the system. So I would ask for more instructions for use for first timers and if there are differences in use for those with macs. There are so many other things going on for a newly licensed atty, everything is new. So it can be a deterrence to learn about a great exciting system, download it and not have any guidance as to how to use it and maximize that use. Overall, once you know how to use the system it is great, but be mindful of not making that a Houdini trick that you have to spend hours trying to master.

I love this app. It really helps me and my staff stay on top of all our cases. It has an uncanny ability to streamline our workflow. Everything I need to do is always just a click away. If its a more complex task I can create a automated workflow that completes the task for me.

So many but the best thing is I can create workflow automations. No other Cloud based App can do that and many of the old school desktop Legal Practice Management Apps can't.

Cons

Needs a better mobile app but help is on the way. The new mobile interface in beta is really good and works on my key devices such as the iPad, Android phone, my PC at the office and my Mac at home

The best part about using Houdini is that there is no charge for a single user, solo practice setup. The program logic is straight forward, but the learning curve is a little steep. But since MOST attorneys have passed the Bar exam, this shouldn't be a problem! There is comprehensive documentation and many how-to videos, but a 1-2-3 setup guide including better descriptions of the various options would be extremely helpful. I prefer reading documentation rather than watching a video, just a personal preference. The Quickbooks connector is great and the Evernote integration is also a big plus. After reviewing all our other options, Houdini ESQ seemed like the best and least expensive place to start and grow.

Pros: it is clear you guys are serious about creating a good product and doing right; flexibility for those of us who are willing to take the time to customize; guys were great when I got them on the phone Cons: integrations with Microsoft and Quickbooks tended to lose their "links", so we were redoing the mapping fairly regularly; configuration was difficult in that it required many steps and alterations of many tabs; sometimes difficult to get someone on the phone and the fix often required a remote programmer/dba who never ultimately fixed the problem. Overall, I think the software is well on its way to be a great solution for law firms. It wasn't quite there for us.

We tried to use this but were constantly on phone with tech support. When we pointed out deficiencies it was met with a angry responses. We asked to try it a gain one year later thinking they would have worked out the kinks. Instead of getting another shot Frank the owner emailed me and said he would not set us up again. Presumably because we were to intense for their software and it's flaws.
