It offers one of the most reliable and secure database platforms, and the team also delivers regular bug patches and upgrades. It is scalable since it supports different platforms and can be installed on multiple systems." Cons Scalability is still a massive difficulty with this service. As the data size grows, this service can manage data up to GB, but it is useless when it comes to TB's and even PB's. Also, OLTP is a significant worry with this service since it is incapable of handling transactional data and real-time batch data processing. While implementing several stored procedures, I also ran across a problem with the absence of documentation for various functions. Pros Been using MySQL for like 5 years almost 90% of total projects done by us are based on MySQL database, the deployment is insanely easy and scalability is amzing it can even handle TBs of data easily requires enough resources. Every major company is using MySQL in some way. These are not the only things being an open source projects the community developer support is by far the best i have ever seen even commercial products don't have this kind of support. MySQL has grown into a very stable product that never crashes. We've made the move to MariaDB, but found that the tables sometimes get corrupted when restarting a database server under heavy load. With the recent speed improvements to MySQL, we have decided to actually migrate back to MySQL. Cons I'd really like if they would spend a bit more time on their CLI interface. As in, syntax highlighting in the CLI, an easier way to scroll through multiline queries when going through the history. I would also like it if we can specify a color scheme to use for the output. There are the occasional self contained application solution where MySQL helped save the day. There's loads of resources online to learn how to set up and use, and diagnose / troubleshoot issues. I haven't had a question which couldn't be answered with a quick web search. There are also multitudes of communities online in which you can learn best practices from, without spending a cent. Pros Not only is it free, but it's powerful, secure and easy to use and set up for basic needs. If advanced features and use cases are needed, it can fulfill those as well with some additional effort. Cons Every implementation of MySQL can feel like a totally different platform based on features and version installed. Especially if you are not the administrator for various MySQL implementations, such as through web hosts. While this is par for the course with most software deployments, it can warrant having to be knowledgeable of the quirks and behaviors of each implementation you use. Our CMS has custom database query commands, so I hardly ever have create my own queries. Even when I do manually write queries I have access to years of documentation to help me along. Pros MySQL is a robust, well document, secure, and interoperable database system software. Almost everyone, all the way down from the vast majority of cheap shared hosting providers up to enterprise cloud hosting providers has support for MySQL databases. I don't need to know how to write queries to use it as there are a number of visual tools to write and execute queries. It is scalable. A project can start small on a single server and grow huge to work in a distributed cloud ecosystem. Cons Learning MySQL is a steep learning curve however you don't have to learn it in most cases as there are frameworks, and visual tools that create MySQL queries for you. MySQL is a powerful and professional RDBMS that has almost anything you can expect. At data level, you have: partitioning, text indexing, geo data type (you can search items near a location), and even NoSQL if you need so. Talking about systems, you can set up Master-Slave systems to improve read availability or even Master-Master for high availability. You can build more robust (but complex) systems with clusters too. MySQL has two models: propietary one and Open Source (‘Community’ version). The fact that this is Open Source has made it the most used RDBMS in the Internet, and the most compatible at tools level (you will find plenty of tools to manage your server via GUI, and probably the development tools you are using already work with MySQL). Cons MySQL is mostly centered around the server. Oracle (the owner of the product) only have two or three very simple management tools (plus the CLI tool), clearly surpassed by lots of tools (both free and commercial). Pros MySQL first and foremost is an opensource database management system. That in and of itself makes it extremely valuable as it is already free. Essentially, MySQL allows you to create different databases. Within these databases, you can have any number of tables. These tables can hold all kinds of information. From unique ids to integers to strings, almost any kind of data can be stored in their database system. It runs based on the SQL language which makes sorting data a breeze and search functions are brilliant once you learn the language. I often use MySQL in relation to PHP websites, and it is integrated seamlessly. Pulling data from a database, adding to it, and updating information is very simple using this program. It's a very powerful tool with a lot of features. Furthermore, it also is easy to install on almost any website as long as you have ftp access. Cons MySQL is not easy to use. While there are a ton of different features, you need to know what you are doing. It is a large learning curve and can take a lot of time for users to get a hang of it. Once the learning curve is breached, it becomes quite a bit easier, Breaching that learning curve is tough, however. Furthermore, MySQL runs slow on large tables. But, it can also deal with over medium databases by expanding your server resources. I think it is the choice of small app that will expand in the few next months / years, it is really scalable. Cons It consumes more ram when the database size gets over 5GB or 10GB of disk space, making it even hareder to make a backup of that size unless you have a very powerful machine with fast nvme. But MySQL is an totally ESSENTIAL part of my online presence, as my websites would immediately cease functioning without MySQL. It is that important! While it does its job most of time, if there are errors in MySQL for whatever reason, then to repair the problem can become a bit expensive. Apart from this small risk, MySQL is one of those "must-have" software if you run any independently hosted websites online. Pros MySQL is the standard database software used by virtually all the PHP-based scripts for database creation and functioning. It is a standard add-on software for most webhosts as part of the cPanel plan. As long as you are not hacked, the database software works quietly in the background 24/7 and delivers your website to the world. As an "add-on" software it is free in that sense (or may be part of my monthly hosting fees), but this is a trivial point. MySQL is like a set-and-forget kind of software, and indispensable to nearly all webmasters. Cons The database is not very efficient, and this often leads to errors, if some script overloads it or if your website is hacked and compromised. If there is too much traffic, things also can break down. As anything database related is hard to repair, it is best to get an expert on MySQL, who can be expensive, to fix any issues in the database. Many additional plugins create further tables or rows in MySQL which remain there for life even if the plugin is removed later on. This leads to bloat in the database.
