It has been a great option for us, when we need an efficient and cheap database engine. It can connect to many sources and can combine into reports with other datasources as well.

Pros

it is very robust and can perform the same functions as any paid software. Also can handle a big amount of data.

Cons

Sometimes it can be difficult to get some assistance online.

Alternatives considered

[Microsoft SQL Server](https://www.capterra.com/p/1417/SQL-Server/)[Oracle Database](https://www.capterra.com/p/5938/Oracle-Database/)

### "Excellent Open Source RDBMS to cater small and medium projects"

July 16, 2019

5.0

I have use MySql a lot for small projects, and light weight web applications. Its easy to interact and implement. A cloud version of mysql "Amazon Aurora" in AWS gives very reliable and scalable RDBMS features is worth looking into

Pros

1\. Open-source RDMS, also available in Amazon Web Services. 2. Easy to learn and implement, less complexity in installation and maintenance. 3. Cross Platform compatibility like Mac, Windows and Linux, 4. Command line operations are easy to perform, also MSSql Workbench software which is availble on mysql website helps a lotin gaining good insights and manage the mysql database and track realtime metrics like storage , RAM usage, queries per second, connections etc.

Cons

1\. For large data or concurrent operations, it takes a performance hit, and over utilization of resources ,in such cases it is not as reliable as compared to Oracle or MS SQL Server. 2. Full fledge stored procedure functionality not available compared to other databases like Postgresql. 3. Also Scalability is a concern.

### "A Great Database for an organisation's need."

September 15, 2019

4.0

My overall experience with MySQL is very positive and owing to the high performance and low operational cost, I would love to work on MySQL again.

Pros

The best thing about MySQL is that it is Open Source. The total cost of ownership in a production environment is very low and performance wise, it is very high performance database. Also, the support for MySQL over the internet is vast and very helpful.

Cons

The thing I like the least about MySQL is it requires a steep learning curve and one must be familiar with SQL concepts in order to use it efficiently. Also, for complex business logic, it tends to get very hard to handle.

Alternatives considered

[MongoDB](https://www.capterra.com/p/127374/MongoDB/)[PostgreSQL](https://www.capterra.com/p/48791/PostgreSQL/)

Reason for choosing MySQL

The prior experience with SQL helped us choose MySQL over other products. Also, MySQL has a great transactional support, which was a basic requirement in our case.

### "I adore MySQL."

December 7, 2022

5.0

I've used this tool for over three years and it has been really helpful to me. It assisted me in managing many databases, query optimization, and data extraction. It is the ideal tool for any beginner.

Pros

Large databases can be handled using MySQL's tremendous capabilities without worrying about data loss. Users can interface with many tools thanks to it. A sizable number of free plug-ins are available. Even though it's open source, it offers strong data security, which helps to safeguard data in a well-organized manner. On forums, you can easily find solutions to any issue. The installation setup and customizations are now considerably simpler thanks to the online interface.

Cons

Most of the helpful features that contemporary database tools provide, such ROLE and COMMIT, are not supported by it. Large datasets are not handled effectively, and speed is rather lacking. You definitely get what you pay for, in my opinion. Nevertheless, it is a fantastic free product.

### "MySQL review "

December 10, 2022

4.0

Overall, I'd really give it a thumbs up!! It has predefined schema creation so it's really great to have compared to NoSQL databases

Pros

The features are good which makes us write complex queries to get data from. Handles queries with ease.

Cons

At times, when the queries are not written in the optimised way, they can't take a long time to execute or run to show the results. So, it's hard to write such queries which is quite challenging

### "MySQL for personal or business projects"

July 6, 2021

4.0

It has served me for personal projects, university and for companies, so for me it is positive, it has been very useful to manage the databases that I have done, at the beginning as I said it is not very intuitive so some things I need to look for them on the internet.

Pros

Mysql offers many advantages for users and the way to connect is also very secure, making it a very versatile tool for those who need a local or external database. Highly recommended for the creation of tables and their respective functions.

Cons

At the beginning it is not very intuitive, so to master it 100% you need to do some research on the internet.

### "MySQL is the database of choice for your initial application."

February 4, 2022

4.0

In a handful of our microservices application databases, we use MySQL. We picked MySQL because it is simple to use, has extensive documentation (both official and unofficial), has a big userbase, and is simple to maintain and install with little configuration. The final element is likely the most critical for us right now since we need something done soon to make our application available to the user.

Pros

It is simple to grasp. It is compatible with the majority of popular programming languages. It outperforms and is less expensive than other relational database services on the market.

Cons

In comparison to PostgreSQL or SQL Server, it lacks sophisticated functionalities. For big databases, it does not scale as well as PostgreSQL or SQL Server.

### "The first database product I ever used."

October 18, 2019

5.0

I have used used MySQL as a database solution since for nearly 15 years. In many projects and for many reasons. This is basically always paired with some type of PHP solution, whether it is to build an API, a basic site or (most frequently) within a WordPress setup. There are good tools to manage databases and tables whether it is a local test server or a remote version. It's a good thing to know and a great way to start learning how to store and manipulate data.

Pros

MySQL is very accessible, as it can be attained free of charge. Because of this and it's relationship with open source solutions and the fact that it is the standard for most hosting providers you will find a lot of documentation and community support for it.

Cons

One con that everyone needs to be aware of in any application is security. It is not that MySQL is insecure, it's that those making use of it need to be aware of security themselves and use best practices to ensure that their data is not left vulnerable. This means knowing how to do so through correct permissions, table structure, etc.

### "There is no better database management system than MySQL."

September 15, 2023

5.0

I've used MySQL for a few years, and I'd heartily recommend it. It is a very capable and flexible solution for managing your server-based data.

Pros

Despite being available for free, MySQL has numerous functionalities that are also present in commercial products like SQL Server.

Cons

The majority of other databases, save for MySQL, offer data transfer between DB and distributed file systems like AWS S3.

Switched from

[PostgreSQL](https://www.capterra.com/p/48791/PostgreSQL/)

Considering how simple it is to use and how much online documentation there is, I decided to use it instead of PostgreSQL.

We set up a MySQL database to store and query data from our application, which writes daily to the DB. We never had any issue with it, which is just great.

Pros

MySQL consistently delivers exceptional performance, making it an ideal choice for a wide range of applications, from small-scale projects to large enterprise systems. Its optimized query execution, indexing mechanisms, and caching strategies contribute to efficient data retrieval and manipulation.

Cons

Fine-tuning settings for optimal performance can require in-depth knowledge, and improper configurations may impact system stability.

Cons

In more advanced applications needing replication and scaling, it can be more difficult to use.

MySQL remains one of the most popular open source databases.

Pros

MySQL open source software, easy to manage and query. In my experience, it's reliable and very efficient. It enables efficient database management. MySQL provides a very high level of security.

Cons

Mysql has its limits when it comes to very advanced functions, or when the load is high. The SQL-dependent system does not support certain languages.

### "The best database management system that exists"

December 8, 2018

4.0

My experience with Mysql has been in perfect conclusion, since I started using this database manager I have always used it, for the creation of the databases of the respective systems that I have coded, and the truth is that the speed and ease that allows you is unmatched, without a doubt for me the best, the only thing is that at first it can be a little more complex because of the lack of documentation but once you know how to use it, you are not looking for any other option, it is perfect for the realization of web applications in particular.

Pros

In my opinion, it is the best database manager and the things I like most about Mysql are: 1. It is an open source database and therefore it can be used by anyone who wants it without having to pay. 2. The speed in performing operations in the database is much more effective than any other that can be achieved in the market. 3. It is super effective to be used in any equipment that is desired since the requirements it needs are low and therefore there is no problem in what kind of hardware the database is being prepared. 4. Easy to install and configure in addition to being supported by many operating systems. 5. Very low probability that the data is corrupted and also its speed and security make it undoubtedly one of the best. And there are a host of positive features that mysql has, without a doubt the best system for database creation.

Cons

As for negative things, I do not have much to say more than perhaps more documentation is needed about their use and that is not usually as intuitive as others.

### "Great open source RDBMS!"

October 27, 2022

4.0

Overall, my experience with MYSQL has been great. This is a very reliable and efficient software, and is very popular throughout the industry owing to its features and stability. It can be easily collaborated with other environment and developments tools, which is very useful in a multi-technology project.

Pros

It is a high performance and secure relational database management system software. Each level of MYSQL is embedded, and there are authentication systems in place to configure user access. Another great thing about MYSQL is that is is widely used across the industry, so any issues while using it or learning to use it can be resolved easily by looking it up on the internet on the numerous mysql communities.

Cons

For users new to using this software, the learning curve might look a little steep in the beginning, and it might get a little difficult navigating through the software. However, almost all issues have solutions posted on the internet, so you are but a few clicks away from getting your doubts resolved. MYSQL works really well for small to mid-sized databases, but the users might face some lag issues while trying to work with a very large database.

### "It's a user friendly platform, short learning curve. Many tools available. Easy to create database"

May 28, 2018

4.0

Pros

MySql is an robust relational database software, Best of all, it is FREE on small and media scales business, it's supported on much operating systems. It's very easy to use and a lot of people are able to understand easier. Tons of online tutoriales. in other words, It's the database for the Web. You do not need specialized help. There's a very big users comunity. It offers fast solution complex database problems for sample the Export Function prove ways to manipulate data.

Cons

MySQL was an open-source database. Since 2009 Oracle purchase Sun Microsystems (including MySQL) for 7.5 billons causing user and developers to begin to debating the fate of the open-source database. MySQL has now propietary and close-source modules.MySQL hasn't changed direction dramatically since it was acquired by Oracle, but Oracle still owns it, which make some developers nervous. Oracle does not accept patches or provide a public roadmap.

### "Best Open-source Database Management Platform"

April 30, 2022

5.0

Using MySQL is very easy to learn and doing codes for testing is flexible. It is good for beginner-level database engineers as well as good for professional engineers too. Using MySQL database will improve the performance of the application. It is also cross-platform support tool and supports all kinds of backend programming languages.

Pros

The interface of MySQL is very easy to use and the code required to execute the commands is easy to handle. It is mostly used in testing the SQL queries on the command line client systems management.

Cons

It is not supporting all kinds of databases and there are some issues in data stabilization that need to be fixed. Poor performance scaling issues are also observable. It is also bit costly no doubt.

### "Gets the job done"

October 22, 2020

4.0

MySQL is very easy to use. Prior to using it, I had no experience at all, and it took a few lessons from my boss to get me started. I started using this software about three years ago and since then, a lot of improvements have been made, which makes it almost perfect now. I would definitely recommended it to those that have to manage databases online.

Pros

Installation of this software is straightforward. This is because you'll be guided through all the steps and it can be done in a few minutes. I also quite appreciate how fast the software is able to run, as long as you have configured it properly, and the fact that it can be run on any connection makes it perfect. Customer support is also quite impressive. There have been a number of instances where I needed to get help instantly, and the customer support team was able to give me the help that needed in no time.

Cons

The only thing that I found to be bothersome is that when you want to use certain features such as backwards compatibility and certain datatypes, you have to ensure that you specify that each time that you add a new user. This just wastes a lot of time as the software is supposed to automatically pick the main configurations.

### "Large scale database with huge potential"

October 12, 2019

4.0

Some of our clients project are still running on MySQL and it is highly reliable. We get very less complaints for MySQL and get more issues flagged for the object relational model databases. However new technologies are striking market every now and then but we can't switch clients from what they consider a very reliable system to other system just because it is new.

Pros

Once Oracle got it under it's arm, it gradually got very popular due to the fact that all the testing is done on MySQL side for the new technologies Oracle integrates into it's high end commercial product list. Modern MySQL’s use case production live environment is great, app-generated - query that is well shown and optimized earlier. We use MySQL to operate a very large production data world, with over multi million rows in largest tables. We have a second search requirement for performance , which is met by Postgre. Overall realtional dbs are still at large for good performance.

Cons

It gets less attention from developers because new innovations are not modified and integrated into it very often which reduces it's competitive environment. It has just became a piecemeal for the testing now.

### "Highly available, local database for small-medium base projects - MySQL"

May 16, 2021

3.0

We use MySQL for our local development ONLY. It serves as a great base, and also due to its power to integrate with any language, it can be used by developers from all the domains. The latency is acceptable in local test environments, therefore, it serves as a great base database for any small application.

Pros

1\. Integration with almost every language available in the industry. 2. Light-weight - can easily work on your legacy systems as well. 3. Very suitable for small-medium scale projects, with very little latency. 4. Can span to multiple instances from one installation, which helps in bifurcation for dev, test and prod environments.

Cons

1\. Cannot be leveraged for large scale projects due to latency and stability issues. 2. Database templates shall be provided out of the box, which can help the user immensely.
