I can't state enough that Patriot has been a game-changer for me in my office workload. Every month, every quarter, I'm saving HOURS of manual work that I can now apply elsewhere. Pros I love how easy it was to switch my payroll from an annually purchased in-house software package, to the Patriot system. I love that I no longer have to open a file, save a backup, and process each employee individually, print tax reports monthly, quarterly, and annually. I wasted so much time in the past. Besides being easier, this payroll system is actually less expensive in the long haul for hours of work saved. Cons Having to modify my in-house record keeping on Quicken software. I'd been set up for my manual payroll previously, with automated entry system in quicken. I've had to modify that process over time to be sure and track my tax payments. Not a huge deal, more of a process of transitioning from one system to another. Still a WHOLE LOT EASIER to manage than all the work I did before. They are the best bang for the buck in payroll processing, and while other companies are outsourcing their customer service (making it essentially worthless), Patriot keeps it US-based, which makes getting help a breeze. Pros The best things about Patriot are (1) the customer service - always pleasant and get our answers easily, (2) the price - it really can't be beat for full service payroll, and (3) ease of use - their web portal is very easy to use and navigate. Cons I do wish there was an actual app for mobile phones to more easily run payroll that way. Going through a browser on a phone can sometimes be clunky. I would like to see more options for customizable payroll reports. At the end of the year, print out your payroll and tax papers, give them to your tax preparer and your done. Literally in 10 minutes (including print time) your paperwork is done. They do it all for you! Pros When joining Patriot Payroll, I was sceptical about the cost and functionality. I have used 3 "big name" companies, and was always in disagreement about their products, pricing and what they actually did. When you need payroll, it was one cost, then if you needed reports, tax payments, and many other things, the costs just kept going up. Those costs avergaed $150 a month. Now I see why they are multi million dollar companies. As a small business owner, the bottom line is very thin and we always have to be aware in the cost for any service. When I started Patriot Payroll, I was eager to see if they in fact were a true value company, and in the first 6 months, it paid for itself. I am super happy as a customer. For one low price, they help you set-up your employee base, salaries or hourly wages, tax numbers, unemployment taxes and more. When you run a payroll, it really only takes me 3 minutes to complete one. Then when the taxes are paid, Patriot also does that and more. They process and send out my quarterly papers and pay all my taxes after linking to my bank. If you need any reports, they are at your fingertips. No longer paying another company extra when you need to get a duplicate employee payroll report. If your stuck and have no where to go, you call their customer service line or email them and within minutes you have your answer. I have referred many people to this company and for good reason. They are great! The name says it all. Patriot. Cons None that I can think of, and after many years of using, that's awesome! Reason for choosing Patriot Payroll Cost being number one as being a small business with less than 4 employees, I couldn't afford a big box companies fees. Because of the amount of data and timing we have had several issues with our tax filing from 2019- but what I love the most about patriot is that they are the most accessible help line that I have ever came across in the business world, you rarely wait on hold for longer than 10 minutes and it has never taken them longer than a few hours to respond to emails- making problem resolutions very quick. Pros I love how organized it keeps all of our data and the ability to send our hourly time clocks straight to the payroll. Cons I wish that you could hide inactive employees from the reports drop downs, and wish that you could create groups within the reports so that you dont have to hunt and peck for certain employees when running reports. I also wish that there was a way for the managers to view hourly time clocks without needing access to the main admin account. Switched from [QuickBooks Enterprise](https://www.capterra.com/p/174984/QuickBooks-Enterprise/) For us we had the desk top version of QuickBooks and it was starting to crash, so I had to call their help line (which was a terrible experience every time, I always got bounced around about 4 times before ending up on the phone with someone who could actually help) . We were eventually told that we used to much data and would need to upgrade to a plan that was $600 a month ( we are a small company with only 12 employees, so to us that just felt like we were being taken advantage of). I got on line and researched alternative's and patriot was the one that we found most appealing- and previously we were paying more for QuickBooks and had to file our own taxes (which resulted in quite a bit of stress and uncertainty). It's easy to navigate and easy to find any reporting I may need. Pros Having a website-based payroll system makes it easy to access. I can keep track of paid time off, deductions, garnishments and all the reporting. I appreciate being able to see past reporting and filings as well. It's live time so I can see employees logging in and out of the timeclock. Working with technical support as always been a positive experience, I can get answers right away. Cons The con about using this system is that it is not correctly registering our overnight crews clock ins and outs. Because they clock in the next day their hours must be manually corrected. I was told this is being worked on in order to get corrected in the future. Then you would have to export that time into the software system. This system also did not keep track of overnight time correctly. I run payroll weekly and it takes me about 5 minutes total. It's completely seamless and efficient! Pros When I signed up for Patriot (YEARS ago!) I wanted something that was user friendly, easy to navigate and had an awesome customer service team behind it. I'm an entrepreneur; not an accountant and I wanted a company that would help whenever I had tax related questions. Patriot has fit the bill for all of that. Cons The only thing that has been an issue is there have been two times in the last year in which my employees have woken up Friday morning and not had their direct deposit paychecks in their bank account. Given the stressful times of COVID this has caused them (mainly their spouses!) stress wondering where their paychecks have been. Luckily both times I've gotten on chat with Patriot and they've admitted the problem with their bank and have promised the direct deposits would be in by EOD. And they have been. I do hope they can get those kinks worked out bc no one likes to wake up and not have their owed money in their bank accounts. But for what it's worth... the communication about it is AMAZING and most of the time that is more important than anything else. The steps to set up and run your first payroll are simple and allow you to really decide what you want on the pay remit. The options are many so you have a lot of versatility from deductions to taxes to contributions to covid parameters. Cons Sometimes it takes a few tries to get where you really need to go. Whether it is user inexperience or just difficulty with verbiage. I will say take advantage of the videos, tutorials, and all the help and support you can get. I appreciate there is a team that can keep up-to-date with tax laws and all returns are submitted electronically. Cons When I made an error in setting up PTO, I couldn't edit it. I had to create a new rule completely and make the one in error, inactive. I was responsible for all paying of taxes and reporting I have had some issues with the payroll forms company connected with Accountedge. They wouldn't print and I would get an error message. They have had some issues. Also, I am retiring from the company and know that many bookkeepers don't know how to do payroll through W2s, so I felt it would be easier to set this up for the next employee to use. Pros Probably the absolute MOST valuable and useful aspects of Patriot Payroll are the support staff. They are knowledgable, patient, helpful, patient, resourceful, patient, and patient. The software itself is intuitively simple. No steep learning curve at all. Notwithstanding, we have had instances requiring unusual transactions or just lapses of our knowledge of payroll-related vagaries. The support staff has always been quick to answer a phone call or email. And, their help has always been exceptional. Cons They are continually adding features. November 1, 2021 5.0 The problem I am solving was my old CPA who did my payroll, wasn't always doing it right or sending in reports done right or ontime. I didn't know anything about it. He sent me the amount each week to pay and I just wrote the check. Finally got audited ( just the payroll ) and he was of no help. So I decided to do it myself. That was a nightmare. The IRS was no help, anything they had to teach you how to do payroll, assumed you already knew how and just showed you how to fill out the forms, but you had to know which form. I stumbled upon Patriot, signed up and it has been pretty smooth sailing for years. Pros I went from paying my CPA to do my payroll and found out years into it, he wasn't always correct. I knew nothing about it, nor what he was doing wrong, nor how to fix it. And I don't think he did either. It was a huge pain in the .... A friend who is a big time corporate CPA, who says I'm too small for his company, told me about online payrolls, mentioned a name or two, so I investigated. Patriot was not one of the ones he mentioned. I don't remember where I first heard about them, but immediately liked them because they have different levels of how much service they provided. I wasn't looking for someone to do everything, I still wanted to be in the loop of knowing what is being done and when. They offer several plans and the one I use is perfect. Cons Nothing really. But I have never done payroll before using Patriot, nor have I ever used another software, so I don't have any experience to compare it to. But I have done my payroll to the satisfaction of the governments and would not have been able to with out Patriot. And whenever something came up that I didn't know, they were there to explain/guide me through it. Reason for choosing Patriot Payroll Because the others were all or nothing. With Patriot, I was able to get them to do just the part I did not know how to do nor wanted to. I do just enough each week that I know what's going on, know if everything is done on time, and save a few bucks to boot. But if you want them to do everything for you, I'm sure they would do just as good of a job for you as they do for me. Pros We are a fairly new nonprofit started in the past 3 years. We started out using patriot payroll and its made paying our employees, paying taxes and filing taxes, as well as tracking what we pay contractors easy and doable for us! It is user friendly and is a very non complicated system. We love the time card management addition that allows our employees to fill out their own time cards, but also allows the administrator to edit them as needed. It's very fast to run, provides a summary that contains nearly all the information I need in one place, provides a PDF file that reflects pay stubs, by employee and it's all quite straightforward and fast. Journal entries are easy to construct with the information given for summary entry into General Ledger. And I do not have to pay by the year which is one of the reasons I switched from another software. Pros Patriot was a breeze to set up, even mid-year and mid-quarter. Payroll is very easy to run and because my clients don't feel comfortable giving access to their bank accounts, I simply provide a PDF of their check stubs for the given week and they write the checks, it works quite well. I am in a different state than my clients but we work by mail and email so PDF files are fine. I have one client that I also use a different General Ledger Accounting software for and I simply journal in the Patriot payroll in journal form at the end of each month. I can break down the detail as much or as little as I need. Cons State of California requires a breakdown per quarter of how much each employee was paid and how much tax they paid for State Taxes. This is a little more difficult to put together as there is no report labeled State payroll. Possibly it is there I just haven't found it specifically, but it is always the most challenging part of the quarterly payroll tax process. I would also like it if child support and Cal Savers could be on the same report as payroll tax deductions. If I had more employees it would be a bigger problem for me. Alternatives considered [QuickBooks Payroll](https://www.capterra.com/p/174981/QuickBooks/) Reason for choosing Patriot Payroll Patriot Payroll was competitively prices compared to Quickbooks. They were willing to charge monthly rather than yearly. Quickbooks had begun to demand more control and higher prices. Switched from [QuickBooks Desktop](https://www.capterra.com/p/212058/QuickBooks-Desktop-Pro/) I thought the continually rising cost to use QuickBooks for the small number of employees was too much. Additionally, QB requires a yearly fee and sometimes a monthly fee as well. I just didn't like the feeling that I had no options but to continue to pay high prices. Because I live in a rural area I have limited internet access so a hot spot, on metered usage is a must. Thus I need to keep as much on desktop as possible. Review Source Similar Products Featured
