I ALWAYS get issues resolved in one call. The software is easy to use, and the monthly billing price makes a huge difference for customers with weekly payroll. I have one client that is saving hundreds of dollars per month. Pros My clients love the fact that they can process payroll in Patriot (especially using direct deposit) and be done with it. Patriot handles direct deposit, federal, state and local tax payments and filings, generating W-2's, generating 1099's for contract workers, etc. It makes it all very simple. Cons There are really only three things I would like to see changed: 1. If you start a payroll and want to change ANYTHING for ANY employee, you have to abandon all that you have done, change the employee information, and start over. I have clients with 40+ employees and this is something that they dread. I can understand the challenges of allowing the underlying data to be changed, but if it could require just re-entering the employee whose information was changed, that would be huge. 2. If I am helping a client and I want to see what they are seeing, I cannot do it in Patriot. I would love to see a read-only mode for consultants so that we could see what our client is seeing. We do this by screen sharing now, but that is an additional hassle. 3. I would love to see an option to group the data that is downloaded to QB Online, but still shows detail. For example: list every gross payroll item, consolidate employer taxes into one entry, consolidate direct deposit withdrawals into one entry, consolidate employer and employee payroll taxes paid into one entry. I do this as a favor for some of my clients, but it would be great if it were done automatically. Review Source Mark M. Also easy to add and edit employee details. Quarterly tax filings are automatic. Their recent fee increase does begin to lose their edge on competitors that offer similar services at only slightly higher fees. Pros The service was very easy to set up (that said, I did choose to move from my prior online payroll service, to Patriot Payroll, on the beginning of a tax year). Running a payroll takes fewer steps than Intuit QuickBooks Online Payroll, which I've previously used. The user interface is intuitive with a ready help function. Good reporting capabilities and it's easy to see what taxes were taken and when they were remitted to taxing authorities. Quarterly reporting is very easy. Cons Customer service at implementation was very good. However, subsequent interactions with customer service have been inconsistent in that sometimes their response has been slower or less complete than I'd like. Also, although I don't consider it a "con," Patriot Payroll does deduct from my corporate bank account all payroll taxes the day after each payroll is run, rather than waiting until they are due to be paid to taxing authorities. This means taxes due quarterly are deducted from the corporate account as many as three months in advance. I assume Patriot is making some interest income off holding these monies. This early deduction is something QuickBooks Online Payroll did not do, in my experience. Owner / Solution Architect Used the software for: Less than 6 months ### "A low-cost Payroll service" July 6, 2018 4.0 Pros It's one of the lower cost full-service payroll providers out there, and it has an attractive feel, and will appeal to business owners who are not full-time HR professionals. The dashboard is straightforward, decently uncluttered, and shows useful information at a glance, with the ability to quickly dive into more information as necessary. Running payroll is also relatively easy once everything is set up, and with full-service payroll, they will take care of all filings as well which is nice. The service is pay as you go, cancel anytime without penalty. Cons Running a payroll is a manual process, and when entering hours there doesn't seem to be a method for uploading a spreadsheet or any import process. For some businesses with many employees this would be tedious, unless you use their time tracking service as well (at an additional fee). They offer additional services, which may appeal to some businesses, such as accounting, but unfortunately they leave those menus intact regardless of if you have the product or not. The result was that as I learned the product, I often found myself on screens that unhelpfully said I don't have a subscription for this. In my opinion those options are cluttering up space, I don't need a constant reminder for a service I don't need. The only reason it is there is for gratuitous upsell, which doesn't help user experience. The biggest con for me, and the reason I ultimately chose another service, is the setup process. While I'd imagine it wasn't necessary difficult, it was overly complex, and involved printing documents, scanning, initialing, and steps other services don't require (or simplify) for setting up services such as Direct Deposit. Working with customer support felt like talking to a robot, not a human, who stood behind her curtain of company policies and couldn't engage in real conversation or sympathy for a frustrated customer. " February 17, 2022 1.0 My accountant disappeared, I'm assuming it is because she defrauded her clients and I can't reach her or find her anywhere. Patriot Software is refusing to give me the payroll records for my business so I can be law-abiding and get my taxes done. I have explained to them NUMEROUS times the following: After continually forgetting to run payroll, my previous accountant told me she was selling her business and passing me on to the person she sold it to who would take over my account from there. Well, she and this other person completely ghosted me and my 2020 taxes never got done. Between dealing with the pandemic fallout and lack of available, trustworthy accountants it took me until mid-2021 to find a good accountant to help me get caught up. I was paying her to do my accounting and my new accountant said my books are a mess and nothing makes any sense. My bookkeeping wasn't being done at all. \[SENSITIVE CONTENT\] was charging me and sending me false reports on top of the mistakes on my payroll. Oh and she wasn’t even a real CPA I finally learned as well. These revelations plus the fact that she has disappeared from the face of the earth leads me to believe I wasn't the only client she was defrauding and she doesn't want to be found. Patriot Software continues to tell me: 'They can't release my records without my payroll provider’s written permission' and there is nothing they can do to help me. January 18, 2021 5.0 Patriots customer service is great. Anytime I have had an issue they have responded promptly with a fix or at least information regarding the issue. Pros Patriot is very user friendly and cost effective. Payroll is very easy to run and reports are easy to find and put together. Cons There are a few items that could use some help: 1st - Payroll Draws could have a section on the payroll run versus backing out and having to go in under the employee first. 2nd - Having the option to pay out a bonus without zeroing out a salary and adding in hours. System requires a 0 salary but 1 hour to pay out a bonus. 3rd - The option to pay out a bonus with only social security and medicare. Almost all payroll companies offer this....what we have to do is change the W4 and then go back and add it back in...that can cause an error that could easily be fixed. Lastly - No timecard system for Monthly payroll processing. There is a weekly, semiweekly and bi monthly but no option for Monthly. There are still some out there that use this option to pay their employees and not offering a timecard system is a loss to patriot. Reason for choosing Patriot Payroll Patriot does not offer a Timecard system for Monthly payroll processing. I have been very happy with Patriot and continue to move my clients over from other payroll processing companies. Slowly but surely I hope to have all 18 over but currently I only have 11. October 12, 2022 5.0 It is such a relief to not get letters from government agencies about paperwork not being filed correctly!! The previous years with Quickbooks I received multiple letters because Quickbooks only pays the agencies and does not file the paperwork and I would have to pay our Accountant extra to get everything straightened out. Pros It keeps all of my payroll information correct and automatically deducts all payroll taxes and withholding from our bank account and pays and files all of the correct paperwork with the different government agencies. January 13, 2021 5.0 The software itself has worked flawlessly from my perspective. It's been nice saving a lot of time since we started using it at the start of 2020. The direct deposit feature is something we didn't have before, and that's been really nice. Pros We love being able to use direct deposit for our employees. Saves me time writing checks, and employees like it better. In 2020, it was so helpful having things automated for purposes of PPP loan forgiveness. It probably saved me 5-10 hours of work that would have had to be done otherwise. Also, the ease of generating W2s for 2020 was a great help. I no longer need to spend money on W2 forms and software every January. It is well worth the monthly fees, in my opinion. Cons I really can't think of any cons. I guess the only con would be having to pay for it monthly, but it is well worth the fees, and really I feel like it's a good value. I guess the only thing I would like to see is an easy way to show how many employees we had at any given pay period (for filing the 940 forms quarterly). I haven't seen how to do that in the reports section, so I just have to manually check the books and see how many checks I wrote for employees on any given pay period. Being able to reach support as needed and get timely help has been a huge factor in our conversion. Pros Patriot is the best software for simple hourly or salary. The customer service, especially the live chat, is always helpful and on target. Cons The 4 day turn around for direct deposit prevents us from using Patriot for more clients, and they really need to add a net to gross option. It's not always intuitive with where to find things, but over the year + we've used it they've made a few great improvments (like multi hour wages, and pto tracking). Pros We use Patriot Software in a wide variety of industries (restaurant, retail, day care, and more). I love how I can set it up for a client, and show them briefly how to run their own payroll. Very easy for simply payrolls. Cons My biggest pet peeve is the inflexibility of making tax adjustments. For Example: a restaurant where they pay out tips each night means that a check would be for sever hours only, usually about $40 for the week. The tips justify enough taxes that they end up with a negative paycheck. In any other system I can manually adjust the taxes held to get the check to zero or close. (the server ends up owing money at the end of the year). With PS, I have to come up with other options for getting the paycheck to zero (like getting the business to cover the taxes in the meantime).
